It's so cute, can I keep it?

I went to the port today, and look what followed me home!

It cleared customs in one day (even faster than the S401 took) and I drove it home in crappy weather on horrible roads. I will make a MR2 thread for it later. I have a number of things I want to do to it that I didn't realize needed doing when I checked it out (and bought it) back in November.

Thanks guys. So now that I've had it for a few days I've discovered a few things:

    1) Maryland SUCKS at unorthodox vehicle registrations. I had to go to the Japanese embassy today for them to certify the translation I have of the export certificate for the car because the MVA (Maryland's version of DMV) requires it (and yes, it actually says in the process that they require a seal from the home country's embassy. I figure that's just because it's next to DC. I can't imagine my home state of California requiring a trip to the Japanese embassy). On top of that they want me to get it inspected and emissions tested. I don't know how that's going to work on a '91 Cappuccino, but I guess I'll find out. I also learned that historic plates are not for frequent use and my car doesn't qualify.

    2) A 25 year old car with a 25 year old electrical system can't have headlights on, foglights, on, A/C on and roll down the windows at the same time. I don't even have a headunit installed yet, so I can't wait to see what that'll be like. I am definitely upgrading the electrical system of the car.

    3) I didn't realize how much I relied on keyless entry until I got a car that doesn't have it. It's funny that I get annoyed by having to put a key in the door and turning it to get in.

    4) I've gotten bigger and less agile since I had a Cappuccino years ago. I don't get into the car anymore so much as I fall into it.

    5) People will look at you. A lot.

They do emissions for >25 year cars there? Thats weird. I didnt think any state did that anymore except perhaps california.

They will likely do an old school sniffer test. Do you know what they are going to do on the "inspection"? I wonder if your RHD headlights and km/h speedo will fail that..

According to this: http://www.mva.maryland.gov/programs/VEIP/veipinfo.htm any passenger car newer than 1977 requires testing in MD.
I think the Cappuccino will pass the inspection, believe it or not. They check all the lights, brakes, boots, % of tint, etc. The Cappuccino was just brought up to compliance to Japanese standards before it got on the boat. Those are more strict.

It's dumb that a 25 year old car has to go through all that though.

That is really odd/stupid that it does not qualify for the historic tags. Did they give you a reason? I thought all cars over 20 years old qualify? We had them on our 91 Corolla. My friend had them on his 87 944 and has them on his 90 Toyota Pick Up. @kcowles had them on her CRX. Thats just a few off the top of my head. I know more people with them.

Oh and with historic tags you don't need inspection or emissions. And yes, my friend daily drives his truck with historic tags.

That is not cool then. Here is an excerpt from the historic tags registration form:

It goes on to say that it requires show-car type insurance, etc, etc. I cannot meet those requirements under oath, so I will not do it. It attracts enough attention as it is, I do not want to push my potential luck in case I ever get pulled over by police for the hell of it (like I was in the S401).

I took @Hinyo out for a ride in it and he was able to see how quick the steering is and how many people stare. He also said it was way smaller than he thought. He may come on here and post his impressions.

In MA-the rules are pretty much the same-thought the highway B.S doesn't make any sense. Cars don't need emissions after 15 years (they rot away) my '91 would pass with ease-if it needed one. I like my plate too much to get rid of it-and, you can't personalize antique plates.

Nothing describes riding in this thing better than "WOW". I was giddy the entire time I was riding in it. Its a great commuter and the looks people gave just made it all the better. Very in-tune with the road. Plenty of power turbo spools SUPER quickly. Needs some work on the electrical side but It will all get done in time. MUCH smaller than I thought it was. The best part was Yama showing me he would open my door from his side without even leaning over! I kept trying to convince him to put it in the shopping cart area to let me take a picture because it will EASILY fit with room to spare. That is a thought for another time. For not just very thankful for the experience. Wish i had a little k car of my own!!!

What she said! Hey, I've been up to a couple up there (and I plan to go go again this year). How about you bring your fancy, new car on down here? I'll let you drive both if you come down this year. You can quote this for posterity too.

Nice buy. I was looking into importing a GTR from Japan. Don't know how difficult it will be with the paper work. I was planing to get historic tags since it will be garaged and taken out once in a blue moon.

Don't bother. The paperwork isn't so bad, but your CLK is more powerful and way nicer than it. The R32 isn't that great compared to modern cars. The R34 GT-R is a different story, but I would never waste my money on an R32 GT-R.

That is awesome, I would love to get my hands on one of these!!! I actually just had to race in one of these in GT6. I hope replacement parts aren't going to be hard to come by?

Sidenote, how difficult was it to get that thing imported, scale of 1 - 10? I have been waiting patiently to get my hands on an EVOI or II since I started my tuning on DSM's back in the day.. I still own a 92 AWD Laser from when I was 19.. money pit.
