    EJ22 Intermittent No Start Issue

    Hi all,

I have a 97 Legacy L Wagon with an EJ22 and an auto. Lately (the last month or so) I have had an intermittent no start issue. It happened twice, both times it was quite cold out, but the first time the engine was very warm and had been shut off for only a few minutes.

When I turn the key, I have power, and I can hear the solenoid click. Since the solenoid seems to be engaging, I don't think it is the starter switch, and it is most likely the starter itself. Are there steps I can go through to test the starter? I believe it is the original starter (meaning it has 236k miles on it, so many many starts). But I don't want to just throw parts at it (budget is an issue). Any ideas on troubleshooting or suspected issues?

    Thanks

A little late, but ask around the local part stores and see if they can look at it or hook up to it to test it. I say part stores because they are more likely to offer it as a free service as opposed to a dealership or shop.

If your still having problems try cleaning the cable on the starter, and the smaller connector on top of the starter. I had corrosion cleaned it off and haven't had any further issues have a 95 ej22 auto.

Most likely the starter, not uncommon on Subaru's.
