    Muse's Del Sol

Forgive me, father, for I have strayed.

Well, here it is. The first non-Subaru car I have owned in... well, several automotive iterations.
It is a 1993 Honda Civic Del Sol Si.
1.6l D16 Single-cam Vtec engine mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. The top does not leak, the windows all work, the tires are new, and it has no rot. It's not all sunshine and rainbows, however. There are a few issues to resolve, such as the fenders on both sides being dinged or smashed, depending on which side you're looking at, as well as needing a New turn signal housing. But overall, I think I have spent my $1500 well.Name: 0219171059a.jpg

Well, not at first. I'm gonna keep it fairly stock at first and commute in it. I've just gotten a new job at a machine shop that's about four times further than my previous delivery job. But I'm not gonna leave it bone stock. For starters, I'm gonna get fiberglass fenders, because, ricecar.

okay, not really. I'm buying them because they're far cheaper than replacement metal fenders.

I also want a few interior bits. Shift knob, maybe an aftermarket steering wheel.

I thought these cars were so cool. Then I realized they were fwd. They lost a little coolness factor on that one. I do like that they designed the roof to fit in the trunk.

I'm already plotting to measure it and see how much modification would be required to fit a Subaru drivetrain... And I haven't even gotten it home yet!

Well, it's certainly not something that will be happening any time soon.

I tell you what, though, I get why people modify Hondas. Parts are friggin' cheap. And not just off-brand parts, too.

I went and got it registered on temp plates today. It is definitely not a speed demon, but it is peppy. My ears were frozen on the drive, but if you think I was gonna take my maiden voyage with the top up, you are fooling yourself. There is a bit of cowl shake, and the interior is less than perfect, but all in all, it seems to be a solid chassis.
The engine pulls strong, I was able to chirp tires in first and second without really trying. It does leak oil. Not sure where from yet, but it is the top of the motor. Probably valve cover gaskets.
Vtec is either broken or too subtle to notice. My mechanic says it could be either.

Time for another round of Fun Facts With Muse!

Did you know that paper temporary tags react poorly with dihydrogen oxide? Be sure you keep them shielded from large quantities of dihidrogen oxide, which is often found in such places as car washes!

... Yeah, I am not a smart man. Back to the ol' Leggo for a few days, like it or not. And, man, what a difference there is between them. The Legacy feels so much heavier, but also feels far torquier. Torquey-er. Something. Also, the difference between a clutch with about 2k on it in the Leg, and one with 181k on it in the Sol. Night and day.

I had an '88 CRX-Si and at first was really disappointed with the acceleration until discovering that you just have to keep it near redline always.

So, evidently BD spoilers fit Del Sols quite nicely.

So, I decided to try the junk spoiler from my old BE parts car.

Heeey... not too shabby. kinda tall for such a little car, but not insane...

The other Del Sol had a BD wing. @Muse tried a BE wing which is a tiny bit wider.

I've actually wanted one of these cars for years. Almost got a CRX back in the day for commuting, but they switched jobs. I like this as a base. I think you will find it will be a good car just for getting from point A to B.

As for AWD.... Start looking at CRV setup. I think it was Dave Brown that built an AWD CRX not too long ago. Cool setup.

Actually, I'm not as convinced that AWD would benefit this car as I was before I drove it. It is a well-balanced FF setup, which I shouldn't be surprised about. Honda has had the time to get their shit figured out. AWD would add unnecessary weight to a car that is all about the power to weight. Naah, I think I'll have to just keep the AWD to the Subarus. And... maybe... just maybe... look into a VR6 swap for this. because the Honda motor is just not that amazing sounding.

Had to get the valve cover gasket done, so I decided to paint it, while it was off.

Rob pressure washed the cover first, and got a good majority of the paint off, just doing that.

We then hit it with many coats of metallic grey, in the hopes of filling in the paint that didn't get blasted or sanded off, but it's still a bit crinkly looking.

Sanded the logo back down to bare metal, clearcoated everything multiple times, and installed it. Guh, now my engine bay looks even filthier for having the one nice piece.

You can do a Type-R or GSR swap really easy in these cars. Like bolt in plug in setups, nothing like Subaru's.

Looks like it's had a new dizzy already! Thats good! lol... They eat those like 25D's eat HG's. haha

I know my Honda's inside out. Never a fan of the Civic lines (Del So and CRX are Civics). If you want to go the cheap route I would thru a B20 motor in and swap the head to a VTEC (B16/B17/B18C/B18C1 or B18C5). Or if you want a bad ass motor I would look into a K motor.

ITR motor are still over price. For the amount your going to pay for a ITR I would just get a K motor.

Most Honda's are high revving motor.

Yeah, it's got a new distributor, wires, HG, water pump, timing belt, replacement (junkyard) timing cover, and now, a new valve cover gasket.

I do love the high-revving nature, but I really don't like the sound of a 4-cylinder Honda. Not deep enough for me. That's why I would dream of a VR6 swap. The noise, more than any torque or power increases. And, yeah, a J swap is possible and would keep it Honda, but, first off, screw the purists, and second, I could fit a VR6 under the hood. A J-series v6 would require a chopped up hood.

A J-series v6 would require a chopped up hood.
You can throw a J motor. My builder is doing one right now with a J35 mid engine Del So. It's allot of pre-markup and fab work. I think the issue you will have is the hood clearance with a J motor.

Well, it may be harder to be original in a Honda... but it is super easy to find stuff to do to them.

Got a type R style polyurethane lip for $35. Fitment is pretty good, and I like the way it looks.

I don't really care, I had a blast, and the car looked great with my crappy tape numbers.

Only because I wasn't there. Nonetheless, you are now an official race car driver with bragging rights. Going to go again? Does the +1 mean you killed a cone?
