    Slamdspec's 96 Outback. The Rebuild!!

Whats up everybody!?!? Havent been around in a bit and something have changed. Lets see if I can get people caught up. I'm also going to try and do better to keep this updated

So last year we did a full 02 wrx swap in to a 98 outback. See the link for that build.

    The White Wagon

Swap ran great for about a year until some misfortune. Long story short, a car rolled into the side of the wagon, bent the b pillar and bent suspension pieces on the passenger side from being pushed up on the curb.

So began the hunt for another one. I found a 96 in the color we were looking for and picked it up same day. It was auto, filthy and in poor shape but i didnt care because we had a whole car to swap in. I didn't think being a 96 was going to be a big deal, but i found out later that it was going to be. Car sat for a few weeks while I finished up the semester. The day we started, I took 2 finals in the morning and by 7pm the same day we had both motors pulled. From there it was pretty much a month straight to get the car done. Some small issues and some big issues came up. Mainly, finding out that the 96 and 98 are different enough that we had to completely strip both cars. So basically I have a 96 chassis with 98 accessories and a full 02 wrx swap..

Heres some pics. Sorry for the quality of these pics. My phone has decided to turn itself into a potato.

Car has been running for about a week now. Some small things coming this weekend that I'll try to update as they get done. Those with a good eye might recognize the middle wagon in this photo. Just picked it up this past weekend and eventually it will become my daily once we replace the headgaskets.

I'll try to add some more pics as I find them.

Also if youre bored, we started a Youtube channel. Only 2 videos for now but we have all the footage from the build that were going through. Eventually it will have more Subaru stuff and we already have a couple more builds lined up. We're still trying to figure it out but follow along as we do

Pretty nice build! I have a few questions if you don't mind!

    1) Are you running the early aluminum 30mm Z32 front calipers or the later cast iron ones? Which adapters are you using?

    2) Are you and the BH Outback still 5x100 and just running adapters for the 5x114.3 wheels?

    3) How much did that iWire harness run you?

Ask away! Im more than happy to help!

    1. I am running the cast iron z32 calipers with brackets i found from someone on Nasioc. I believe his name was fate066 or something similar. This was about 3 years ago so im not sure if he still makes them. KNSbrakes sells the adapter now I believe. The biggest difference between those and mine is that I use an STi rotor while I believe KNS uses a lgt rotor.

    2. My NT03m's are 5x100 and the BH outback is using Circuit Sport 20mm adapters to run the STi wheels

    3. I wanna say i paid in the 850ish range for my harness. My price was alittle higher than normal though because I had it rushed (1 week turnaround vs 4-6 weeks) and I needed to buy a fuel pump controller.

$200 for just the brackets (per axle)

Do those Z32 calipers fit in the 17" BBS wheels?

I paid more than that for my brackets.. and the KNS ones look better than mine do.

I have only ran the 17" BBS wheels in 5x114 so I was using an adapter. So they cleared with a 15mm adapter. Not sure on the 5x100 ones. Do the BBS's clear the Subaru 4 pots?

Yes, the 04-07 BBSs clear Brembos, so they clear the 4 pots as well.

I think I could have some brackets made for less than the KNS ones... But I should finish my swap first before playing with a brake upgrade

So not the greatest of updates but about 3 weeks after we finished the swap, the motor seized in the driveway. . so the car has been sitting since then. We had just swapped over a full limited interior and install pillowball lateral links and trailing arms..oh well. right now the plan is to fix our other wagon so my girl and I arent sharing one car anymore and to rebuild the wrx motor over the next several months. I want to go 2.1 stroker but we'll see how the money comes in.

A few pics. Drained the oil. Pretty sure it spun a bearing.

Heres the last pic i took before the motor died.
