Nice Work, Sherlock Flasheart. I wonder if the timing marks are off because it's a gen 1 avcs vs gen 2 avcs thing.

i dont think its a generation thing, i believe its a turbo/non-turbo thing. i was talking to Chris down at Metric, and he was telling me the non-turbo is phased differently to allow for more overlap. im not sure how he know this, but it makes a certain amount of sense to have more overlap for better blow-down on a non F/I engine, but i assumed that that would be handled through the computer. when i take the camshaft out this weekend i am going to compare the phasing to the EJ255 camshafts.

Wow I just finished reading through this thread, amazing! Curious about the head swap though, were there any difference in oil/coolant passages between the 254 & 255?

That sounds right, that the cam timing marks are 180* off from what the ECU is expecting. I've personally ran na cams as turbo and turbo cams in an NA, didn't experience your issues, but this was on phase 1 engines.

    Thanks!
as far as i can tell, i havent found any difference in casting. The castings even had the bosses for the coolant and oil lines. All i had to do was drill and tap one coolant line, and the oil return line. Ive done this before, I am running EJ25D heads that have been drilled for a turbo. by all appearances it looks like a set of EJ20K heads.

Side note, I bought ANOTHER Legacy. This one is also a 2005 Legacy 2.5GT in Atlantic Blue Pearl, however its a auto and a wagon. this one has a nasty rod knock. I need to fix and give one of these two to my nephew. I cant decide. The sedan is a manual, but the wagon would probably fit my life style better.. decisions, decisions...

So i swapped the camshafts to the original camshafts and it runs BEAUTIFULLY.
In comparing the EJ255 and EJ254 camshafts i found that the EJ255 cams have 3 (i believe they are called stators) little notches to signal the sensor: one approximately where the number 3 cylinder's intake lobe makes contact with the bucket, one approximately at the peak of the lobe and one notch where the cam lobe leaves contact. the EJ254 camshafts have only the first two. and are missing the third notch
its hard to see in this picture
