My suggestion is to contact ECS directly. SL-i.net is not affliated with ECS and cannot really offer sound pricing/quote.

I thought it was $75/hr for labor.. with all the confusion over the prices makes me feel like just trying to swap myself when that time comes.

well then just pay them to do the wiring.. i think the price of $2750 is for a complete drivetrain swap w/ suspension.

thing is you dont really know the true price.. I'd like to find out more about it next year. When I emailed ECS awhile ago they made it seem like the swap and all was done just for the amount listed on the site.

The pricing on the site looks great, but then I have no idea what time period or labor time is necessary to complete a full swap with drivetrain, So i wasn't sure if the price would swell and skyrocket once all is said and done. I'll drop by May 16th on my way to my brother graduation. thanks for the feedback guys.

2750 is the price for motor-only swap. And it's all inclusive, (even tuning if you are going to be upgrading parts along the way).

Keep in mind a lot of the "labor" prices that other shops give is just that...labor to drop the engine in and plug it all in. No new gaskets, no new lines, oil change...all the little things that's part of the swap that eventually adds up. If you buy the engine from ECS, they also warranty that engine for 1 year I think.

Anyway, subaru swaps are pretty common nowadays so you can have them done by a lot of places. Ironically, most of them just send your wiring harnesses to ECS to be merged anyway.

In the end, the important think is that you feel like you got a good deal out of the whatever shop you used for the price.

Also, ask people that have done swaps and ask them if they would do it again...you'd be surprised how many will say "I shouldve just paid someone else to do it".

2750-950(just for wiring)=1800-400 most for gaskets and hoses= 1400 for just labor for a motor swap... its only a 8hr job (book rate) to replace the motor. that $175 a hour for labor... at they labor rate of $75 an hour you should at least get 18 hours of work done just for mechanical. when we swaped my friends GC8 we only spend 9 hours doing the full drivetrain swap... mechanical wise

I wonder if it's cheaper just to buy my own engine and haul it in the trunk and have them do it..

I don't know the ECS online store has been down for months... I hear about all these deals.. people said they had hookup's and got an STI engine for like $800 or whatever amount.

I still say go with andre up in montreal.. he is a great guy.. last time i talked to ECS guys via email / phone, they were pretty rude and didnt help me out much... andrew went out of his way to help me, call me back, and give me the best prices possible. Not to mention he gave a price to me to get EVERYTHING done.. engine swap, wiring, custom exhaust that he bends himself, etc.. etc. It just sucks that when i got up to montreal.. i wasn't allowed in with my car! I fucked everything up.. I was quite unhappy with it.. so I feel like i owe andre a favor, and tell everyone how awesome he was in helping me out! I had the choice of a 04 wrx swap with 40k miles on it + new clutch for $5000, or a v5 sti + b4 tranny for $5500.. including EVERYTHING.

I think anyone real serious about a swap needs to just call different shops and figure out a price with the shit that meets YOUR needs and come up with your own experience.

Listening to hear-say-I-llke-them-I-hate-them doesn't mean you'll have the same experience.

Call a shop, visit them, get to know them, explain your goals, and do your research.

    Just my $.02

Not to mention he gave a price to me to get EVERYTHING done.. engine swap, wiring, custom exhaust that he bends himself, etc.. etc. It just sucks that when i got up to montreal.. i wasn't allowed in with my car! I fucked everything up.. I was quite unhappy with it.. so I feel like i owe andre a favor, and tell everyone how awesome he was in helping me out! I had the choice of a 04 wrx swap with 40k miles on it + new clutch for $5000, or a v5 sti + b4 tranny for $5500.. including EVERYTHING.
Well I had the opposite experience with ECS, I was in contact with them on a regular basis for a good 3 months before I dropped off my car with them, just asking about general swap questions, etc before I even told them I would have mine done through them. Paul even picked me up and dropped me off at the airport when I picked up my car.

Like I said, experiences tend to vary with shops. I was happy with the work from ECS, but I'm not going to turn this thread into a raging fanboy he said/he said pissing contest...that's what NASIOC is for.

You should set up your own shop. You'd make a killing then.

Well mine wasn't really a typical swap...I had a whole front subframe off an sti fitted included the steering rack, along with bigger turbo, FMIC, injectors, tuning , completely new catback, plus my radiator ended up having a leak etc. All in all it WOULDVE been around 3500 for the labor, but my old engine spun a rod bearing so I couldn't get the core deposit

The big deal with me is that they have already done a swap on a BE. Not a lot of shops can claim to have done that, so that was a big plus for me.
Plus, ECS has a great track record of doing this kind of work and they have great customer service so I was satisfied with my experience with them.

Like I said, subaru swaps are pretty common nowadays, so you're not going to find a shortage of shops that can do the job...however you really got to know the quality of work the shop you're dealing is capable/willing to put out; this means knowing their reputation, finding examples of their past work, basically doing your research, even if youre not going to be doing the work yourself. I think that's the most important piece of advice I can give anyone looking to have a swap done.

How hard is a harness from a wrx engine being put into a 98 BD? I work with electronics tv's and PCB's all I would need is a pinout guide?
