    Tranny Interchange Info?

My trans is going out in my car and I'm wondering if there is a place where I can find out what other trannys I can put in it? I have a 97 legacy wagon.

oh, and it's an automatic. I figure I need to mention that.

    Thanks!!

Any 4EAT from 95-99 will bolt up. The later trannies have crisper smoother shifts.

I'm pretty sure the 4EATs from 00-04 will bolt up too, but they may use a different shift logic (and the harness might be diff. too).

Any phase 1 trans from 90-98/99 Leg's or Imp's will bolt up.
The phase 2 Tranny's started showing up in mid 98, the easiest way to tell if it's a phase 2 is that there is a spin on oil filter on the left side of the tranny. The phase 2's will physically bolt up, but the wiring harness and TCU is different. So you would need to change all the wiring, TCU and add some links to the ECU.

    It can be done, but you're better off sticking with a phase 1. These were available with 5 different final drive gear ratios;
    1 - 3.545 Only in AWD SVX's
    2 - 3.7 Only FWD tranny's in the US
    3 - 3.9 In some first gen Leg's
    4 - 4.11 Some first gen Leg's and most 2.2 2nd Gen Leg's
    5 - 4.44 Most 2.5 Leg's and Imp's

All of these tranny's will bolt up and plug in, but if you change the final drive of the trans, you need to get a matching rear end.

I was thinking about just pulling the rear end with the tranny when I swapped. I have a 99 Outback that is totaled, but is in GREAT running condition.

what about gearing in the front end? will I have to do anything to that?

The gearing in the front end/front differential is a part of the transmission itself.

But unless that 99 OB is a SUS, it probably is a phase 2, and can't be easily used.

Most 98/99 OB Wagons have the newer trans. For some reason all 99 OB Sedans I've seen still have the phase 1???

When you drive an SVX, it's important to know where your next transmission is gonna come from

Auto/5MT? Year, trim level, etc. I'll look it up for you on my chart if it's a 5MT. If it's a 4EAT, it should be 4.11, depending on the year, model, it could be 4.444 or 3.9.
