    What 100 dollars bought me

Well I had already gotten most of my new parts off this car but the best part came today. I got a call and said hey come get this POS out of my shop. Gimme 100 bux for it and its yours, The motor is screwed form the front end collison he says, SO I go get a car dolly and go get it and when I get back the destruction began. The motor has 109,xxx on it new head gaskets and seals in such in past 10k. Motor was not screwed as far as I can tell. Busted all the cam pulleys, and some other plastic parts, but no cracks in motor/manifolds/etc. Think I got a deal?

and here is how it looked when I got it home

Also got off this rear discs, all new interior plastics, headliner, cat back OE exhaust incase I ever need to replace mine, plus other little things here and there.

    Let me know

    Josh

I'm sure you've got $100 of usable parts there. But I bet your pistons and valves are toast on the motor. So the motor is probably a wash.

    why would you say that?

Im not to familer with subie engines so not sure what I was looking at, Are they interferance motors?

How would I go about checking to see if any internal damage was done?

    thanks

Get the engine out and onto a stand, then crank it over... if there's damage internally you'll feel resistance, or get a compression tester.

    UPDATE::::::::::::

    Ok

I started pulling more stuff off.

3 of the 4 cams turned freely and than stopped. the 4th cam drivers side bottom cam was frozen. I took the v cover off and a metal piece fell out. Took the cam in question out and cam was cracked, and part of head broke off. The crank turns over feels like it builds compression, than releases. So from what im thinking I need a new head on that side.

    Anyone agree or disagree.

and a vid showiong the crank turning

    sorry its dark

The piece of metal that fell out, where did it come from, the head or the cam? I'm betting your gonna have to pull both heads off to check the pistons. Hopefully you'll be lucky and the when the crash happened the motor stopped the same time the belt broke and nothing hit.

BTW - nice find for $100. Even if the motor is toast, you can sell enough parts on e-bay the recoup your costs. Also, I'm a newbie to Subaru's too so I'm wondering about turning the motor while the belt is broken would tell anything.

Did you turn the cams with the timing belt on or no? If not then the crash might not have screwed them up you could have. On the dual overhead cam (DOHC) motors you can't let the cams spin freely and let the valves make contact. Those valve springs put out alot of force. And yes, past 1996 the subaru motors were interference. I don't think any of the 2.5's were ever non-interference.

well reguardless the drivers side head was shot becasue of the internal damage (broken Piece that came out) To be safe it looks like I may replace both heads.

well with all the carbon on that you would be able to tell if there was contact. it wouldnt hurt to check the rings on it, and take the pan off and check the berings.
