Manual or Auto?
Either way its really easy. If you want I can supply pictures....
1. Remove the trim piece around the shifter 1st.
2. Take off shifter knob
3. Remove the 4 phillips head screws on the center console (the thing with the cup holders). 2 are underneath the center cubby armrest thing and the other 2 are in the front of it.
4. Pull your e-brake and take that whole center piece thing out.
5. Pull your coin tray out.
6. Remove the oter cubby hole underneath the coin tray.
7. Remove the center trim piece around the radio/ac controls. It just pulls out. Its held in by little tabby things.
8. Unplug the cigarette lighter and light
9. Now there are 6 screws that hold the radio/ac control unit thing in. 2 on the left, 2 on the right and 2 on the bottom.
10. That whole center unit comes out now. There are 4 screws (possibly 2 not sure how many come stock. Been awhile since I have seen it stock.) that hold the radio headunit in.
11. Unplug the antenna and the wiring harness.
Bam its out!!!
Once again if you need pictures, I can supply them.

If the headunit is single DIN, it'll bolt right in

awsome, thanx guys, that helped a lot
is this guide the same for a 95?
not quite. You need to get the screws out from behind the cupholder (pull it out and remove those two screws. Then you remove the ashtray and remove the two screws on the roof of the tray opening. Then you take out the center paneling (unscrew 2 screws by opening up the "sillybin" in the center console) and you can take out the radio bezel from there. It's all pretty straight forward if you know where to look.

yeah i got most of the way done just cause i was bored and wanted to see how hard it was gonna be when i did it and i got all the screws out but it felt like there were some behind it, are there or do i just need to pull
the rack that holds the radio has 6 screws. The 4 that you probably saw are easy enough, but there's 2 more that are located farther back on some chassis back there. You'll have to get them out, and then its free. I left the screws out when I reinstalled.

assuming you've already got the wiring harness set up, less than that.

Depends how your going to wire it. If you have an adapter it just takes a bit of crimping and reading instructions (which wire is which)
But if your going to hardwire it into the harness then it will probably take a bit longer. I highly suggest the adapter, mine didnt cost much at all
mine was 15 US$ It was worth it. Then you can go back to stock in a snap, if need be, without any rewiring issues.

where can i get an adapter
where are you getting your headunit? If its not from a local store, you can stop at Circuit City, Best Buy, or any car audio shop and they should have a harness. Its the same for all subarus, IIRC

i got it on the internet but are you saying circut city should have one
I got mine from the same place I got my HU, so Im assuming theres at least one place in your city with one in stock!
ok ill just go ask around tomarow
You guys are killing me with your non-technical speak.
Aftermarket stereo wiring harness = adapter
DO NOT EVER HACK YOUR HARNESS!!
Some new cars will not run if you remove the stock stereo. Some cars will not function properly if the stock stereo is removed.
ok ive almost got the stock hu out but theres two screws in the back i cant get to, is there anyone who has done this and knows how to get the screws out
Mark should know this. Wait for him to chime in or PM him.
I've done Decks on the gen1 legacys but not the gen2.
yeah i got it out it just took a secound look and a flashlight, so now what should i ask when i go up to circut city and go get an adapter just ask for a subaru headunit adapter?
Pretty much. Theyre all the same so one for an impreza will work on the Legacy (I beleive the packaging for mine said 02 RS, lol)
lol ok thanks
would this work?

that's what you'll be getting, but it doesn't have to be HU specific, the main thing is to make it vehicle specific. And I can't tell if it is or not. When you go there, you can ask them for the harness, they'll have it. That's where I got mine.

yeah that ones for the legacy
i went to a bunch of local shops and they didnt have it and i didnt have enough time to drive up to circuit city
yeah, not all small shops will. Subarus aren't terribly mainstream, although you wouldn't think it would be hard to carry a harness that works for most all Subarus
You'll find it. DON'T order it online, too much potential for a screwup...
