    Project Cobalt (96 WRX Wagon)

First off, This is a experience building project and also future race car, that is why i decided to do it from scratch, plus i want to build it how i want to.

Its called project cobalt because i was thinking of a paint scheme and it happens to be the same color combo as my boost gauge and regular chewing gum :smt026

I took up a big task but hopefully i can finish it by mid year.

I still have more parts to pick up, i just wanted the hard part done first, Moving the chassis.
I have 2 dashes and more interior tim to get.

    Plans:
Swap over my legacy drivetrain and try to make the body lightweight as possible.

    Parts To get:
    Engine oil Cooler
    Powersteering Oil Cooler
    Hydrolic Hand Brake
    Hood Pins
    12 gallon Fuel Cell
    Steering Wheel (320mm)
    Cobalt Gauges (Autometer)
    -Water Temp
    -Oil Pressure
    -Boost - Owned
    Front Windscreen
    Zero/Sports Sequential Controller - Owned
Turbo XS knocklite/Shift Light - Owned
    Rear Diff or rebuild part.
    Legacy GT-B R71 Maf Sensor

Application: Local Time Attack, Auto X & Cuircuit.

I will photoshop a GF8 to show what my paint scheme will look like.

    Any comments, recommendations, concerns?

If you want weight savings, then remove the locking mechanisms and wiring from the rear doors, weld them shut and install lexan for the rear side windows.

This is going to be interesting!

    Thats the plan
I am welding the rear doors shut once i get the roll cage, taking out the stock gastank and get a smaller fuel cell, the dash is already gutted down to the skins, i am going to take the rear wiper motors and the passenger side window motor out, once i start swapping the motor i am going to remove the A/c compressor contemplating if i should remove the side windows, their is still a few sound deadening allong the chassis so i am going to spend a while getting that out (sucks because i cant get dry ice on island ) i am thinking about getting a grinder and just grind them off.

I have been checking the body of the car, the shell had minimal rust, but the drivetrain has allot of surface rust. (Control arms, brake hubs etc.)

I am going to scrap my GTB for the needed parts because the whole drivetrain is rusted.
so i am going to try and workout a way to receive payments so i can part out most of the body panels, Fogs, bumpers, sideskirts, back bumper, momo steering wheel, side mirrors, hatch wing, brake lights, projectors etc for shipped prices you would pay in the states (from the Legacy)...

Just to confirm GC8/GF8 Suspension WILL NOT WORK on your legacy, the front will but the rear wont.

Re: Project Cobalt (96 WRX Wagon)

Dry sump fuel FTW. See if you can legally mount the fuel cell in the middle of the car or ahead of the rear wheels to keep the weight distribution even, along with the lightweight battery in a safe case.

You really won't need a lot to get the car moving...

Re: Project Cobalt (96 WRX Wagon)

i got ya huffer, i have 0 limitations i have been looking at oddessy batteries (however it is spelt)

i am going to experiment a little bit, i am going to test out the sequential controller and i figured out how to go parallel so i will try that, then go parallel with the z/s controller, i will keep messing with the motor till it blows up.

updating my plans and parts needed, in the first post shortly.

Re: Project Cobalt (96 WRX Wagon)

i will try not to get frustrated lol but i got a few stuff done today after work, cant wait for the weekend :smt026

Happy to say, the shell is in great condition, better than i expected, they were a few rust here and their but nothing deep, the only affected parts were the bolts.
I took off the fenders, front bumper beam, wiring harness & fuse boxes, the brake booster and a bunch of other things out, just the ABS and wiper motor left, depending if the weekend is cool or not,, i will sand down the engine bay and attack it with flat black primer.

i was contemplating if i should ditch the ABS during the swap, but i think i will put it in and disconnect it until i feel comfortable driving without it.

Here are some quick shots i took before the skeeters attacked me. :smt012

The car had Impressive on the windscreen and Subarude on the fenders lol

updates to come, i finally got my altezza a few days ago (I love it!) so now i can put a muzzle over the leggy and put it to sleep. going to finish prepping the shell over this next week or so then paint it.

I have a broken bolt in the rear crossmember so i am trying to get that out so i can start bondo, paint and sound deadening removal.

Re: Project Cobalt (96 WRX Wagon)

bad news project is scraped, the whole undercarrage is rusted and the trunk is the same, i pulled off the sound deadening off the floor and i could see the ground in like 5 spots and when i pulled off the rear subframe, the pice that the bolts connect to for the swaybar.. broke out i could fix it up but its a waste of time to do that much work restoring it.

I am in search of another shell, hopefully i can get a impreza wagon or even better, a BD
