    Whistling at high rpm

Alright, I have had this noise since I bought the car and its finally getting to me. Anytime the engine is at over 3000 rpm I get a whistling noise, everytime, nothing at 2900 but at 3000 it happens and continues till it drops below. I checked vacuum hoses and I am stuck, any suggestions?

It's fairly high pitched, my dad can't hear it. I'll look around tomorrow

By stock '99 BH 2.5 does that too! It sounds almost like it was a turbo...

I think the intensity of the whistling noise is related to the throttle opening - I can go over 3000 RPM with low throttle and it wouldn't whistle (or it wouldn't be loud enough to hear). If I step on it, it's clearly there.

I was thinking it could be some alternator / AC / power steering bearing, but that doesn't explain the throttle dependance...

I'm also interested in the cause / solution...

    Re: Whistling at high rpm

I have the noise. Somewhere before, someone said the Legacy mufflers have a weld that breaks and that causes it. sounds nearly like a bearing going bad its soooo loud.

so, I took my muffler off, and no whistle.
Put a flowmaster on, no whstle.
put a 2.5 RS on, no whistle.

So, I painted my GT muffler with some header paint to see if it would keep it from whistling, and it did... for about an hour maybe...

the paint flaked off where the pressure was coming out, so now I know where it comes from...

On the sides of the muffler, there are two long folded parts, where they weld the halves together. mine broke near the end on the psgr side, towards the front of the car.

    I would check there first...

    Re: Whistling at high rpm

The muffler? Really? I could've sworn it's coming out of the engine bay...

My muffler is in deed badly rusted and I'm getting an aftermarket replacement this or next month.

My 95 wagon has the same thing at 3k plus. I really think it's a leak from somewhere between the air filter to the throttle body.

    Re: Whistling at high rpm

I promise you guys, mine sounds like its coming from the intake area when you are in the car, but that IS where mine is leaking. EVERYONE thinks it sounds like the intake something up front, but it's just the sound reverberating up to the front. I can try to take a pic next time I get a chance...

now, thats not to say yours are 100% gonna be the exhaust leak, but just start there... its 2 bolts and 3 rubber hangers from being off the car anyways, just remember if you take the axleback off, you may need a new gasket or it might leak...
