    Okin's E36 328i: 4/9/12 Re-Build pics and progress

My E36 and it's evolution from day 1 to current.
    Day before I bought it.

Couple of weeks after to it's current state.

And my "Spring" wheels for the Mitto's are back on after the street sweepers have done their duty:

    Then;

    And back to Repainted Mitos...

Those m-series motors in your case the M52 is a well built, well balanced motor w/ dual vanos. The sound of these motors are so throaty. My buddy use to rock a few e30's and an e36 both very well designed chassis, although the e36 was bang on with weight distribution.

    Also don't forget about Dinan

    Congrats on the new ride.

    Chuck: Thanks for the compliment!
I hadn't forgot about Dinan. I've also been scouring the net for Hartge and Alpina bits and pieces.

I like the tail lights, but that might be after everything mechanical and electronic is taken care of.

I just cleaned it up a little and aside from my maintenance and minor upgrade plans, I found some minor cosmetic things I'd like to replace for now:

    My driver's door handle,
    shift knob,
    floor mats (missing 1 rear),
and factory fogs (1's cracked )

    Re: Okin's Boston Green E36 328i !!!Pics!!!

just changed my plugs from NGK'S (wtf) to Bosch and swapped out the air filter too. Also got a chance to clean it up a bit and adjust somethings while I was at it.

    Overall, Im ok with it.

So far, I found a set of new Bilsteins (new) for $310 shipped and I've also been looking for tophats as well front swaybar bushings.

Ohh how I love teh parts hunting game! Lol

    Re: Okin's Boston Green E36 328i !!!Pics!!!

    Nice buy Okin

I'd been thinking about the idea of getting myself an E36 M3 before my father passed away and I got his Legacy, and I'd still love to have one at some point in my life (though I will admit that I could easily change that thought with the Impreza that I'm almost certainly going to end up replacing my Legacy with). Of the 3-series BMW's, I feel that the E36 generation has the most distinctive overall look and the greatest presence, and is most assuredly the best compromise between light weight performance and premium luxury of all generations of 3-series by today's standards.

That being said, what the hell is wrong with NGK plugs? Just because your car is german doesn't mean you need german spark plugs .

    Now, on to business:
Before you go ahead and spend roughly $2k+ on HID's and a performance chip, might I suggest the following?
    1. Get an E36 M3 rear diff (for obvious LSD-related reasons)
    2. Get your ECU reflashed. Does all the same things as a performance chip, but should potentially be cheaper depending on who you know.
    For the future:
    1. Turbocharger or supercharger. Due to being a USDM E36, your engine has iron cylinder sleeves and what I'm fairly certain is a goodly amount of deck metal. I, for one, suggest you make use of that if only for better fuel economy (in the case of the properly sized/tuned turbo route). Obviously there are many other benefits to forced induction, but that is the one you will tell the emissions people .
    2. Individual Throttle Bodies. I can't recall at the moment whether or not BMW uses ITB's on all of their I6-powered cars, but I could easily see them doing so. Either way, chances are good that they don't flow nearly as well as a set of Extrudabody 45mm ITB's. Such a setup would be most beneficial for the fore mentioned turbo route due to needing to make/buy an intake plenum and get a new air sensor anyway. Obviously not really a particularly important modification unless you want to get the absolute most power out of your engine after having taken care of just about anything else, unless you really like the cool looks of exposed inline throttle bodies .
    3. M3 6 speed swap? Probably plenty of crashed E36 M3's in the junkyards to look through .

    Once again, great car!

Nothing is wrong with NGK. Had different sets of NGK's in my Bk. That said, This one has Bosche plugs today.

I wish I had that kind of budget for just having the car a month. You give me WAY to much credit

EDM headlights w/H.I.D's were only placed on this list so I can see @ 4am going to work. IMO It's no mod, but a ?safety Update? &380 for low beam hids and a used shark re-programmer. Also, Some late E36's were offered with HID's as well.

1- Definitely on my to-do list. I know that the 1 on here is the serviced factory 1 w/ 150k.
2- I've found Shark's and Dinan software on CL and EBay as well and it is definitely on the "to do list", if **and when** I get time and $.

    As for the future list:

A bit too excessive for what I was thinking for a sedan. Sedans are sturdy don't get me wrong, but I would prefer a 318ti w/ an M3 swap to tackle an track event with. Other than that, it's been my daily driver while (time & $ permitting) rehabbing and construction is underway.

    Re: Okin's Boston Green E36 328i !!!Pics!!!

Haha, well I wish I had that kind of budget, too

Oddly enough, I think that if you did all of the work yourself you could get the "future" list done for fairly cheaply, and they would do little more than to just make your car a little different from other BMW's and make it more efficient/enjoyable. For example, with a turbo you'd really only need one that's big enough to spool up at an RPM level that's roughly halfway through the average RPM range that you use for city/highway cruising that's set for low boost with a switch to change to high boost for a little extra "passing speed" on the highway. That, along with a used M3 6 speed should actually help to increase your city fuel economy, let alone increase your acceleration and horsepower potential.

By the by, I thought you meant an HID retrofit, not just EDM headlights . Obviously that's a perfectly acceptable upgrade for the price (Hell, I'm running JDM projectors on my Legacy; same thing, basically).

Excellent idea!.... Only thing is, the only reliable-entry level turbo system for this car is $2300 (parts only-Used) - $3200 New. I also was looking into superchargers as well. Leaning towards SC, but still have to talk to the guys at Turner Motorsports. I've been going back and forth on the phone and on-line with BavAuto, but would like to get some further "opinions".

A used 6 speed M3 tranny/shaft/rear end (w/58k) and associated hardware (new clutch kit etc...)has been priced out. $2178 and that is with an OEM style (Sachs) clutch

I'm still working on the suspension and steering. Next I'll tackle the braking then the Exhaust. By January (Yeah, next year) I should be ready to drop an M3 pumpkin as well as new guibo for posterity.

    Re: Okin's Boston Green E36 328i !!!Pics!!!

Yeah, turbo kits can be a tad expensive. Makes me especially f@#$ing glad that my best friend is a welder by trade; probably cuts a good $500+ out of the price of putting a turbo system into whatever car I want (certainly not the Legacy anymore, friggin' Mustang).

Now to be honest, that seems like a pretty good price to me for that M3 6 speed, especially when you consider that afterwords you can sell your 5 speed and associated hardware to make back some of that price (I would guess roughly $1k-$1500 including the rear diff). Now, does that price include the M3 axles and rear hubs and crap, or do you not need them (honestly don't know) [edit: nevermind, re-read your post, though I am still interested in exactly what parts you'd need for the swap]? I'll probably be interested to hear how that pans out if at all, as fairly recently I realized that in all my plans for various vehicles, I never really thought of an inexpensive/comfortable coupe, which a 3 series would work perfectly for. It'd most certainly be a better DD than the K5 Blazer I'm probably about to get this next week.

Good to know that you're all ready on top of pretty much all of the performance aspects of your new car; too many people in BMW's these days seem to just buy them for the looks and "street cred", as it were,

What tire size do you plan on running? Those are some pretty wide wheels! My E34 had 17x8.5 front and rear with 245 wide fronts and 275 wide rears.

235/45 front and 245/40 rear , but that's not even set in stone.

I won't put them on, as I've got a bad right rear wheel bearing and I'm waiting on a friend to get a new 1. Wheels will be used sparingly as I don't want to get wheel bearings every year

I plan on going through a couple of sizes dry fitting them as I don't really want to stretch my 1/4's, just roll them. I know a couple of tire shop owners locally, so I hope they won't mind my pestering them about swapping on and off.

And......... More SHTUFF acquired!!!! Damn. More Ramen Noodles for lunch

    15k Bilsteins w/ new tophats/dust covers/bumpstops etc......

Also just picked up a zone sensor for my alarm.

I think 245s should be fine for the rears. You probably will have to roll the rear quarterpanels, but not too much. The 245s I had on the front of mine never had rubbing issues. The 275s, however, always did with rolled quarters.

Re: Okin's Green E36-- Staggered fitment OZ's Acquired!

As i keep talking to the BMW community, the 245's keep looking like a reality.

As it looks now, i'll have to put the E36 project on hold. I screwed up by helping alot of people out, and a rare few have been returning favors. Im just waiting on my suspension to come, then there will be a hiatus from parts hunting. Gotta save the credit card for xmass.

Just recently got my M Poser front cover with all associated moldings including lip. A set of Eibach's. Should be in next week, but both probably not in/on the car until March.
