Re: Bookem's '98 Legacy Rwd GTT 8/17/12 welded rear diff

Well won't be any sideways pics, (maybe some snowtime cyclones though) I was working on a video last week and toasted another welded rear diff, I wasn't even clutch kicking when it went out but I had once prior and holy is it a violent tire spin. So in the last month, been two welded diffs and two not so cheap tires trashed it was fun and glad to try it out. But my wife and I now have another kid on the way so going back to awd and put in a lsd rear diff from the '00 RS my current trans came from.

Anyways here's some pics from welding the center diff, I'll be putting up for sale.

Center diff disassembled, clutch packs (not shown) bearing halves and spider gear and forward transfer removed to lose awd.

Splined transfer gear welded to center diff cover

Cover welded to center diff assembly, sorry I don't have a tig, so mig welder works just fine but not so pretty.

Just wondering, how much of a pain was it to pull the center diff apart?

Sorry just noticed you posted on here, haven't logged in for a while. I can go into details if you still need, I actually have the rear cover off the trans as I had some odd noises coming from the trans area and thought that stupid center diff circlip might be the culprit but wasn't.

The plastic surroundings were cracking and got a good deal on one piece headlights.

Re: Bookem's '98 Legacy GTT New axles and Radiator

Finally have the car back on the road after sitting in the garage for two months. The 5 year old Koyo radiator had small leaks where the top tubes go into the side tank so not really easy to get at to fix. I was also hearing a rattle around the clutch and figured it was clutch springs or in the trans so pulled everything apart. Got the trans out and found one of the bolts for the clutch dust shield/inspection cover was missing and the rattle was that thing clanking against the engine block, lucky me. Since I had everything apart I welded the circlip on the center diff, front left axle was shot and right side boots were dry rotted real bad so got a pair from Raxles. Upgraded the stock exhaust hangers to some Cusco to tighten the exhaust up that was tapping my bumper when going over bumps. Now she's ready for winter again,
