So i swapped the camshafts to the original camshafts and it runs BEAUTIFULLY.
In comparing the EJ255 and EJ254 camshafts i found that the EJ255 cams have 3 (i believe they are called stators) little notches to signal the sensor: one approximately where the number 3 cylinder's intake lobe makes contact with the bucket, one approximately at the peak of the lobe and one notch where the cam lobe leaves contact. the EJ254 camshafts have only the first two. and are missing the third notch
