as the title says, i have what sounds like a lifter tick. ben there since i bought the car. ive tried to convince myself that i was hearing things, but when my brother drove it over thanksgiving, he even asked what it was. so i have to fix it. and i know i should have when i did the timing belt last week, but....
anyway, im assuming since i have the SOHC 2.5 that it should be relatively simple to so in the car, correct? will i be able to reuse the valve cover gaskets, or do i need to order some? also, anyone have a how to on this, or just follow the factory service manual? any tricks?
how often does this need to be done?
also, i noticed while doing my timing belt that the oil leak was not coming from the crank seal like i thought. instead, it appears to be coming from a large steel plug near the crankshaft pulley. it faces towards the ground, is in front of the oil pan, has an allen head type of hole in it, and is towards the drivers side of the motor. what is it? and what seals it so i can fix it?
thanks
michael

get pictures. if you can. also one of my leggy's had a lifter tick I took it for an oil change with 5w 30 and had the guy put in lucas for the last quart. it seriously stopped the ticking sound. iwould suggest if you cat change it right away , do it. but if you have to drive it for more than couple weeks try the lucas oil change.

Valve adjustment is actually fairly rare. How many miles on your car? Mine was spot on even at 151k miles. I checked mine because I was also getting a noise I would characterize as valvetrain noise from the rear cyl on the left bank (I'm not up to date on the cyl numbering). It wasn't the valve adjustment. I'm still not sure what it is honestly.
I think I know what plug you are talking about. I think the oil pump pressure relief valve and spring are behind that plug. You sure it is leaking from that plug and not running down from behind the pump? The oil pump leaking around the 2 halves and around where it seals to the block is pretty common. Often times the screws holding the two pump halves together get loose and it will leak--that's what happened to mine.

DO NOT USE AN OIL ADDITIVE.
The only thing I will put in my oil is Seafoam, and that gets drained within 100miles.

New valvecover gaskets, everything is suggested. http://www.rs25.com/forums/f105/t51254- ... stall.html (http://www.rs25.com/forums/f105/t51254-diy-valve-cover-spark-plug-gasket-install.html)
the plug youre describing sounds like an empty plug, there's not really a gasket there to help it seal.
Subaru motors use hydraulic lifters, a little ticking is normal, what weight/brand oil are you using? Different oils can actually affect how loud the ticking is.

im running mobil1 synthetic 5w30. wix filters.
ticking is from the drivers side bank. unknown which cylender. motor has 105xxx on the clock.
i do not believe in additives for oil or anything else, unless its the head gasket stuff or posi additive.
im gion to do further research on the plug before i mess with it.
and a little ticking being normal sounds good to me. i dont remember much about my other subies, as i never really cared. they were 200 dollar cars.
thanks for the link.

switch to a different synthetic oil like rotella 5w40 or syntec 5w30 or penzoil plat 5w30 (mobil1 tends to not be as thick, and also sheers faster than other synthetics of similar weight, many WRX owners found this out the hard way), or go with the extended performance version of the 5w30. You can also try a conventional 5w30 like GTX to see if the noise quiets down.

In my defense I had about 190 on the dash so when I used the lucas. altho i've sold the car it still runs. my question about seafoam how long does the smoke usually last. looks like a pain to deal with while its smoking..

Smoke doesn't last long. Depends on how much buildup you have, and that's usually only when you apply through the PCV valve. Engine oil it just helps clean out old deposits.
