how does your suspension hold up on the corners? I would be scared of rolling over.

Its actually fine. I've never thrown around a WRX or a lowered car or done autocross on a good suspension so my experience with high high speed, smooth cornering is somewhat limited; quick turns on uneven terrain is my world :twisted:
BUT, that said, i've seen a WRX roll in a rally cross. It's more about technique and ability, knowing your limits and how to drive within and when to push them.

The Subaru's standard lower center of gravity helps a lot, but an up-sized rear sway bar keeps the body roll down and the suspension mostly moves to take up the dips and uneven terrain while the body stays relatively flat-ish. I have unbeaded a tire a couple times hitting ruts in tight turns in dirt, but that's more b/c of the high sidewall in these ATs. That would be less likely if I had the 216x65 16 setup, but that's another story. Tall sidewalls are good for off-roading applications, ads more cushion and absorbtion.

I conveniently had a flat the other day giving me the opportunity to do some rough measurements of wheel offsets. :cool:
Both rims have 27x8.5 AT tires mounted.

factory stealie with (assuming) 55mm offset provides the inflated, mounted tire a 1.5" inset from the fender

I stopped to fill up and saw an idling '11 WRX with Blizzaks. The owner came out and I say, "This here's driving weather, eh?!" to which he said, yeah! "I'm headed to Denver right now since there won't really be anyone on the road."

He went on about how awesome snow tires are and how he can get about anywhere and is only limited by snow depth, I agreed happily motioning to my Subaru, then he turned and saw my rig and said, "Oooh, 'Superu'! I love it (noting my custom badging on the trunk). He asked if he could take pictures as he was dusting the snow off "S U P E R U", to which of coarse I happily gave permission. He went back to his car and said, "You need to have some shwag! Ooh by the way I'm Jon, I'm with Subaru of America."

Then he saw my badge of ownership, gave props and took a picture then came around the side and jaw-dropped with the clearance and noted, "Rocking the grabbers, awesome!", then he worked around to the front and was floored by the bumper. "Nice man this is an awesome Suby!, mind if I take some more pictures? "

"Hey don't be surprised if you see pictures of your car somewhere, like in Drive mag or something."

I then scraped the ice off my boxer decal on the hood which he that rocked and took pictures of. I then told him how it was ALL factory Subaru drivetrain and suspension and opened the door to reveal the low range lever.

We shot the breeze for a while and exchanged info. I told him I'd been considering drafting a note for Drive mag and he encouraged me. He said, "Ooh yeah, they LOVE this stuff, they eat it up, You should write them in about your rig!"

So, Lordflashheart (https://sl-i.net/FORUM/memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=11106), famous for engine work and insanely awesome power builds, mostly fitted into his 95 legacy (https://sl-i.net/FORUM/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=20486) so far, has initiated discussions with me on a power plant upgrade for my Superu! :smt027

While the stock EJ22 in my 'lil bird is a fantastic motor, known bullet-proof, solid, reliable and great....it is ultimately, at best a 134 HP (advertised 18 yrs ago...likely just around 100 HP on the ground now) normally aspirated boxer with, compared to what's available now, limiting performance and overall a low bling factor (to many ;). While the car is awesome, utilitarian, reliable and very, 'er EXTREMELY capable, in its current all-factory-drivetrain-and-suspension state, the time has come to ratchet up a level! I'm approaching the 200K mile mark, and the mods have progressed to where less and less (save primarily the shell and most of the interior) of the car are remaining factory (see comprehensive build and mods beginning back in this thread on page 1). As such, the time has come to consider more power, performance and AWESOMENESS!!!! :twisted: :smt025

Im thinking 120-130whp is realilistic for this build in naturally aspirated form.
boosted its tough to say. There is too many factors playing into boosted applications.
But as a general ball park probably just shy of 200whp.

My goal with marks build is to show that you dont need a bunch of crazy shiz to make power. A EJ25D done right can suprise you. reliable. Smooth. Powerful.

And being a NA all the time stalwart, I've been a stick in the mud for years about the trade-offs of boost vs. NA. mostly b/c I have no direct experience with boost and only NA. BUT when hearing about boost from someone who KNOWS what's what, I've stepped back to have a listen.
Being a regular visitor in dreamland for more power, I've spent many an hour thinking of the awesomeness of an EG33 swap, POWER and NA all the way, yeah!
BUT reality has a way of nestling in the middle of all that. 2 kids, P/T job, P/T stay-at-home, no play money, getting through every single day without a lot of awesomeness to look forward to, feeling lost in career, etc. etc. etc. (hello middle age? :smt005 :smt072 )

THEN Chad comes around with all this awesomeness talk about how he's fine tuned an EJ25, then boosted it and I say, waitasecond!!
Reflecting on my world, that would mean the awesomeness of an upgrade from a 186K mile NA 2.2 to a well redone (HG and all), DOHC 2.5 AAAAND maybe even moar top end with a mild boost?!?!?!

So then I'm all like, "so the effective NA bottom end and torque of a DOHC 2.5 PLUS a little push up in the mid and upper RPM ranges?!?!?! :smt007

haha, I completely understand the sentiment. The more research I've done in the last year the more I rethink putting the high compression motor I have built into my car. it would be so easy for me to pull the heads and throw the original pistons back in there. I've got a lot of the supporting accessories for a turbo build. I'll be following this one closely!

AAAAND, since SOO many factory cars are boosted, its definitely the way of the market. Getting more power out of small efficient engines is the trend of auto makers.

I have a few feelers out for a legacy (probably an Impreza would be fine too), NON outback or forester, control arm with transverse link.

hoping to go yarding on monday, possibly back driving next week! Ooh, front tire (the one I replaced within the last year or two) got a sidewall puncture, so unrepairable :smt012 But the rear just had a pebble in the bead so its GTG :smt026
I'm going to have to roll on the bald spare for a scosh. THEN buy another hundred dollar tire....again :smt009

Turns out I did have to do the scissor jack wedged in there to push back the front mounting bracket a scosh, but otherwise just a bolt-on repair. . . . .so far, we'll see what the alignment tech has to say :smt002

Front got a sidewall puncture, rear just got a pebble in the bead and a leak; the rear just needed a reseal and re-seat but the sidewall puncture is unrepairable :smt012

Now to revisit going to 15's or maybe 16's (interchangability with 03 OBS, should I deceide to take that one up a notch) :smt028

So When I fixed the bead leak and got the transverse link in, I was running on my bald spare, thus I needed some meat.

I was on the fence about going up to 15's maybe some braids or team dynamics b/c in the 15" world there are a lot more options for a circa 27" AT tire.
BUUUT, turns out that's a $1200ish world for 4 rally rims AND new tires, so I just went for some 27x8.5 14 grabbers again, thinking/hoping I could get away with just a pair of tires matched on the front.. . . .

Turns out 30K miles on Grabbers (rotated somewhat religiously) amounts to about 75% wear

Turns out a 3 year old Grabber with about 30K miles on it is about 3" smaller in circumference!! That's a scosh over the Subaru recommended overall tire circumference difference of .25"

old tire: 80.5" (207cm) with 4/32 tread
new tire: 83.5" (212cm) with 16/32 tread - mounted 83.75" (212.5cm)

(yeah yeah, I know...geometry will get you there too )

SOOOO, I bought another pair thus ending up with 4 new tires and now 3 decent spares (plus the bald BFG)

That's custom.
Stock it says (as you know) SUBARU, but (per my alias) I wanted SUPERU badging . I took gen 2 forester tailgate badging and, using a drimmel, I made the B into an E and the R into a P then with 3m body molding tape (http://www.autozone.com/autozone/accessories/Fluids-and-Chemicals/Body-Molding-Tape/_/N-25ej) I covered the SUBARU with my new SUPERU.

I've seen some JDM guys who've taken the that piece off the trunk and cut out SUBARU or JDM trunks say LEGACY, and they retrofit/mod it to make those letters light up with the parking or brake lights.

When I first did this mod, I had 2 different generation forester badges and the letters are a little different sizes, so for a while the R was a little bigger than the rest, but eventually I got the right letter. :)
So it doesn't light up, its customized forester badging over the factory inlaid SUBARU lettering.

I ordered parts to make lockdown kits for 2 cars, shipped for less than one lockdown kit from other vendors. . .
2 - M12x1.25 (55mm length) Grade 10.9 Bolts (Fastenal p/n 11114723)
2 - 3/4" OD x 1/2" ID Bronze Flanged Bushings (Fastenal p/n 0435322)
1 - M12x1.25 Tap (Fastenal p/n 0326862)

Loosen rear subframe mounting bolts (a breaker bar is gute)
Run M12x1.25 tap through threads (clean them out to ensure good fitment and not blow the captive)
Install both lockdown bolts with bushings loosely with a little anti-seize on them for good measure
Tighten lockdown bolts to 30 ft-lbs
Ensure vehicle is on the ground (optional* it may have never left the ground
Tighten rear subframe mounting bolts to 94 ± 14 ft-lbs

simple camera mount:

Take a CB antenna's magnet mount, remove the antenna, then put a nut and bolt through the base and the thread pitch is identical to a tripod's thus a camera screws right onto it. I have a stopper nut and washer which i tighten back up to the camera...

Subaru literature says something like, "Subaru does not suggest[/recommend] towing with a sedan."

I've never found any justification for that statement; with a receiver and an AUDM SF DR 5MT,
I confidently exceed the BG's recommended towing capacity of 1,000# for a manual gearbox wagon
(recall my car is not a wagon and was factory geared with 3.90 FD :FU: ).

To those with lifted rigs, here's oft overlooked, under spoken yet important detail. The jack.

Most probably have some lumbar on board for such occasions, but until you get a flat in a lifted rig you won't notice this detail.

I have had a few de-beads and such in the field and usually I can dig a little trench under the tire and/or
I'v had some 2x4 scraps in "the kit", but sometimes the earth is non-compliant or you get the rare
pavement tire change and without a 4x4 or a couple 2-bys you're in a bit of a bind with a factory scissor jack.

This is some truly valuable info. Probably worth considering the opposite for those with lowered Outbacks, too. That riser might prevent you from getting an Outback jack under a lowered car, depending on jow low you've gone.

SeaFoamed this morning. 1 can (i.e. 1 pint) in fuel tank 1/2 can in crank case and the other half into intake via PCV.

I set a quick grip clamp on the throttle to rev it around 2K during the intake pouring.

With the heated seat upgrade, I realized it wasn't 100% so I opened the switches and did some bulb replacement. The On lights worked but not the heated seat icons.

These are a 2nd gen OB seat heater switches but the first gen is anatomically the same with only a slight difference in the face of the switch; rather than textured nubs it's rounded.

I only had the tiny bulbs so i just put those everywhere. They're a little shorter than what came out so the condoms didn't fit so well and potentially they don't illuminate or spread the light as well, but heck. I got me some illumination and now i can see my junk at night!!

I got a 1996 legacy sedan L and want to rasie it but scared of going over 2in because of crossmenber n drive line mods etc will i be safe with 98 outback struts front n back with stock legacy spring i want to keep my stock 14s what size tire would be practical for everyday driving offroads when needed just want a lil more lift to be able to actually be able to go off road if i needed or when it rains alot where i live there floods everywhere

The easiest way is OB struts. I'm pretty sure the legacy and OB springs are the same so that won't affect anything different going legacy vs. OB spring.
I still have 14" rims but they're aftermarket with less offset than factory rims, as such i have a slightly wider stance/track than with Subaru rims or steelies, and a little better clearances. I did a similar lift on a 93 imprexa and put OB rims and slightly larger tires on it and it came out nice. Functionally higher ground clearance but in a tasteful way not on off-roader. Just practical clearance with off pavement capability.

So for you I'd recommend just the strut swap (and get the OB trailing arm bracket to recenter the rear wheel) and maybe going 195x75 or even 205x75 tires.
Below are pix of stock, stock tires with the OB strut lift and the OB strut lift with 205x75 14 AT tires from about nine or ten years ago, that was the early days so it was just a strut swap and bigger tires.

Is your car a stick or auto?
One thing I noticed with over sized tires is I lost power with my manual transmission (it has a 3.90 final drive, maybe your '96 is different), so with taller tires it was effectively under-geared. Good for highway when at speed but slower in stop-and-go city traffic.

In continuing the black-out of my console and dash... I got the HVAC surround and a nicer hazard switch. The registers were a little jacked so with some fiddling I was able to swap my registers into the black surround... custom two-tone final product! :)

Btw was there a reason for not picking the rack off a legacy wagon? I already installed the one for the GT wagon and never bothered checking to see how it fits on a sedan.

Yeah, those OBS seats are way nicer!! Especially upgraded with the heaters ;) they sure get dirty faster though :(

I didn't do a personal look at the wagon racks but some have fixed cross bars where as others have adjustable (I think this is base legacy vs. OB). The fixed crossbars racks are still wagon long and a quick measurement of my OBS rack shows I'd have to have shortened it by like 21" or something drastic to fit it. I don't know the length of the older fixed racks, but they're shorter than the ones on OBs. This 4runner rack is maybe an inch narrower than i'd prefer but totally fine lengthwise and a waaay better fit as-is than trying to mod a wagon rack. The sedan's roof just doesn't have much real estate for fitting a rack to, plus its curves on both axes are apparent whereas the length curve is not a factor on a wagon.

Interesting choice on the rack. I hate the idea of drilling into the roof... LOL... Though, it looks like it works for what you need. r3v_v3ng3 does have a point though. The BK racks are much shorter then the Outback.

And interesting change on the mirror switch also.

Yeah, copy that. The lego ones are shorter than OB, but I think still too long for a sedan roof AND they're just sheet metal screwed in.
These 4-runner rails are 36" long and about 37" wide.
There's just not much real estate up there to work with in a sedan (which is not the only reason they're not racked from the factory (lol), and factory racks are typically set back a bit for aerodynamics.
My wife's 03 OBS is 9" from the front of the rails to the windshield but the fore-most crossbar position is still like 19", at best, from the windshield.

This 4-runner rack is 7" from the windshield and the fore-most crossbar position is like 9" from the windshield.

AAAND, it was available in my lowly little JY here in Moab ;)
