Sorry for the delays in repsonding to yous guys kudos

Yes, modified Mudrat custom skidplate. But the thing weighs 40 pounds
So ned taller stiffer springs now.
I usually just run the skid in winter...
Its ALL steel (duuh, weight), with 1" tubes for lateral support, and the side wings are 1/4 " to tidy up the skid to the bumper and close off the sides.

racingking951,

outback struts and springs added about 1.5" to the stock legacy L suspension, and the 27" (27x8.5x14") BFGs added another 1.5-1.6" ON TOP of the outback strut lift. SO i'm sitting about 3 inches TALLER than stock legacy. So I'm around 9-10" ground clearance to the rear diff, rather than the stock 6ish inches...

What are you getting from the forest, struts and springs? And what are you putting them on?

FYI, I've heard OB struts allow taller tires over FOR struts. I hear the lower spring perch on the FOR struts is a touch lower (maybe allowing for the FOR's taller springs?) than the OB 's lower spring perch. I've heard someon doing FOR struts and not getting as tall of a tire on b/c of the spring perch, he then swapped for OB struts and was able to fit a taller tire than the FOR struts allowed..
BUT maybe like a 1/2 " tire difference.. BOTH FOR and OB will give lift, b/c of the longer shaft b/t the lower spring perch and where the strut mounts to the wheel knuckle...

Anyhoo, yeah, struts gave 1.5" and the tires gave another 1.5" (stock tire 185x75x14 = 24" diameter, BFG 27x8.5x14= 27" diameter, thus taller diameter=taller radius=more ground clearance :smt023 )

well im limited on used parts down hear in florida soooo if a OB setup would provide better clearance than FOR i would much rather have the OB. i was going to run both struts and springs from the FOR and go get new tires a few days later (i really need to get tires since i got the steel belt showing but i dont want to get tires then lift it then want to get new tires again lol)

i guess ill keep watching ebay and checking the local junkyard for some

But, racingking951, beware... once you go down that road, there's no turning back :smt029
The lifting and modification road is a slippery slope

Yes, checking ebay and even your parts stores are good plans... I did tirerack and got a pretty good deal on my latest OB struts (already had springs from the first round).

OORRRRR,

What I've been reading elsewhere lately is this little tidbit.

If you run entire strut assemblies (strut, spring and tophat) from a second generation forester (they're talking about 04 or 05, with 05 XT being ideal), you'll get I THINK (I have not verified this with my own eyes, just seen pictures after the fact) you'll get 3 inches over stock with that strut package alone... This was mentioned as a way of lifting an outback, with reports of 1.5" lift over stock on an outback...
(do a search on dirtyimpreza.com for lifting and outback, or I can find you the threads in DI if you'd like)
SO with that you may get like 3" in suspension over stock legacy, THEN tires to boot!

BUT word of caution, going over 2" over stock ON ANYTHING, you'll need to drop driveline stuff, like the spacers on the engine crossmember that FOR and OB have over IMP and legacies), and a tranny crossmember bracket, and a rear trailing arm bracket...

SO, there's something to put in your pipe... :smt026

With that said, simplest would be 97-99 OB struts and springs (your tophats will be fine, if they're not destroyed) would be simplest and cheapest... I got my first set shipped from WA when I was in AZ, but that cost me... My friend just did this swap and got the strut and spring for a little more than I got the strut alone from tirerack...

Highest would be second gen FOR assemblies...

This is a late 90's Impreza on second gen forester suspension

thats alot more work than what i thought it would be and thanks for all the info im still determined to do the lift i guess i should save up and get all the parts together first before starting anything if i still want to go that high. what about outback struts and springs and 1.5in strut spacers that lift just the body, would i still need to drop the drive line as well or will i be able to skip this step? thanks again for all the info

 I had this whole informative response typed out, then lost my net connection!!

Basically what I think I said was, I'd suggest just going OB struts and taller tires. You might get away with doing a 1" spacer on top of the strut without needing to drop the driveline too, but that's only a might.

If you go over 2" higher than stock in suspension lifting (like second gen FOR strut gear), or OB struts and taller springs (like king springs' raised springs), OR OB struts and spacers (body lift), you'd need to think about much more stuff...

BUT, if you just stick with OB struts and taller tires, you'd be fine!! I'd suggest getting new KYB GR2s (or excell G as they're called now). You can get them on a pretty good deal from tire rack, and you will have new parts rather than 160,000++ mile used parts with little to no life left in them, AND the KYBs are a touch stifer response than squichy stock suby struts (which are also made by KYB, just to Suby's softer specs for production cars)

*BUT* b.c your CV axles currently have their "wear pattern" established on stock height, you may need to keep in mind that switching your axle angles (via OB lift, or spring lift or spacer lift), it may fatigue your axles quicker... BUT if that be the case and you swap cvs, they'll be happy starting life at the new height.

Make sense? :smt017

SO, to conclude (again ;) what I guess I'm saying is, I'd suggest OB strut swap and taller tires (27" is fine no problems with an OB strut swap) and you'd be psyched. If you still need more, you might be able to squeeze in 1" or less of spacers without needing to drp the other stuff..

:smt006 k, bye, happy lifting

That's an "F'ing" line!!!

They might be giving you some smoke up your skirt to "cover their insurance" rather than just saying they're "...not comfortable installing larger than recommended"...
I did test fits to determine up to 27ish" would fit with no rubbing lock to lock and a little suspension flex (lowering the car off the lift on a railroad tie-sized block)...

I have had no issues with and of my differentials.
AS LONG AS YOU REPLACE ALL 4 TIRES AT THE SAME TIME, you won't either.

If you did the 26" on front and stock on back to save money, you'd certainly blow your center diff, similarly if you replaced large on right and stock on left you'd blow your diffs..

You will find a discrepancy i your speedo and odo with the taller tires, but that's physics... taller tires = travelling faster than your speedo indicates...
BUT otherwise no. If you swap all four for equal size tires at the same time, you won't have problems...

So did you do the 97-99 OB strut swap? I'm interested in your lifting prgress :smt029

but anyways the lift is still untouched lol i figured id do your set up seeing as it seems the easiest im just having trouble finding the springs. ive only fouond them at the dealership so im waiting for something to show up either in the local junkyard or ebay

LAME!!!!

Yeah, for cost you could just get new OB struts (tire rack) and either reuse your leggo springs (folks have told me they're the same as OB springs) or what I'm trying to do, is use first gen FOR springs in the OB struts.. I think it might give a touch more lift if not just be a touch stiffer...

Anyhoo, checkit: http://www.dirtyimpreza.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16066
$80 shipped is like $20 a spring (like junk yard prices) and free shipping :smt021

I want that Hill!

I want to do what you are doing but to an outback.

King springs from Australia make a "raised" spring that'll lift and OB 2"

Jacksonrally is popular on the dirtyimpreza site, http://www.dirtyimpreza.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12180 they make a 1" spacer (body lift) that bolts on top of the strut and "spaces' the body up off the strut... A good and cheap 1" lift for an outback... They make them that'll fit legacies and outbacks too, not just imprezas and foresters

Or this, swapping second generation forester strut assemblies into a first gen OB will give you about 2" suspension lift...
http://www.teamilluminata.com./Customers/OBAT/obat.htm
also discussed here is springs and new forester struts for lifting: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=329349&highlight=lifting+an+outback

on my 2000 impreza OBS what struts/springs are a direct bolt on to gain lift? and can i do the strut/spring + bigger wheels & tires w/o doing all that extra work?

EDIT: also on another note does anyone know what stiffer rear and or front swaybar options i have for the
OBS after the lift? preferably not aftermarket.

Hang with me here... This might sound confusing... I'm not that familiar with that year impreza... I've done it to a 93, but it should've had the rear trailing arm bracket.. Instead i swapped rear springs..

I'm pretty sure front is fine across the board on all these swaps, but the rear gets tricky across model lines...
I think first (98-01?) or second (02-08?) generation forester is bolt on, BUT you'll have to make sure on the rear tophats. I think the first generation imprezas need their tophats, while foresters go straight over to second (95-99) generation legacies/first generation (96-99) legacy outbacks,
BUT second generation forester's have their tophats that work on legacies. I'm not sure about second generation imprezas (which might be 02-05?) I'm really not sure on impreza year line changes.. Your 00 might be the same as a 98, or 93 for that matter, i'm just not sure myself...

Check out dirtimpreza.com, the cats over there do a bunch of these strut swaps, or 1" spacers (basically a body lift for $250) on TOP of the strut, sandwiched b/t the strut and the unibody...

Regarding sway bars, i'd suggest looking into WRX stuff... Those cats pull stock and trash it all the time for aftermarket, and WRX should be stiffer than OBS or impreza in the first place anyway...

I'm thinking of a stiffer sway set for my legacy too, but not sure what to look for, maybe outback, maybe 99 GT? just not sure yet...

Easiest for your OBS might just be a 1" spacer set.. check out jackson rally on dirtyimpreza.com...

Checkit, here's the link... http://www.jacksonrally.com/

best of luck, and heck yeah, get that thing in the air!! drift it like you just don't care!!! :smt026

I just fell in love with your car. I see people lowering their cars and whatnot, but what good is that. Its a SUBARU not a freaking Honda. I have a 97 LGT, and I'm thinking of picking up an L and making it my rally car, so I can keep my LGT clean, and then maybe I'd be confortable with lowering it, or better yet just selling it and getting a WRX or something. I love rallying my stock height LGT though. I'm just worried about catching the oil pan. Boy would I be mad. Lol.

Raise the GT, it would rock in rally cross!

In fact I'm looking to get a steering rack and sway bars from a GT.. It should prove to be an improvement.

BTW folks, I finally installed FOR coils in my rear struts and GAINED another 3/4 inch (or so)!!

Given the extra half coil in the FOR spring, there may be a slight geometrical difference in the upper spring perch, so I also used FOR tophats, but when side-by side I couldn't eyeball any real difference b/t the FOR and OB tophats...

Here's the profile before (when the BFG's were new, 8-10-06)

I think, to the eye, it looks more like an inch so maybe i had some inconsistency in measuring.. I did the before measuring a couple of months ago

And possibly the before profile pic above is also on slightly uneven ground, slightly. But maybe enough to compress the left rear a touch...

So, that's my latest (racingking951, FYI, looks like this'll give you a bit more lift (closer to 3.4 almost 4" in ground clearance gain overall, with 27" tires), on the cheaper when compared to doing the whole gen 2 forester strut swap. good luck! what's the latest on your project?)

I think the unibodies are weak enough that they can tweak (like yours did ona its whump!), but like with a frame straightener.

Yeah, with the skin off in your second pic, you know what I'm talking about that it'd be a bit trickier to cover up with a steelie... But thinking of the ARB bumpers, you could do a tube skeleton and cover it with some sheet metal in a nice way...

Ah, here's a thread I can USE! I'm going to be lifting my now lowered L wagon, and was thinking of using Forester struts since I can most likely find used ones with low miles cheap. Not wanting to spend a ton on new OB stuff, or buying cheap worn out old OB stuff from a junkyard.

I have no problems spacing my engine crossmember, or changing the trailing link brackets, but are they ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY? Also considering wheels/tires, should I stick to factory offset, or maybe find something that will shove the wheels outward a tad? I want to run steelies, and was thinking of either Forester 16's, tire rack winter 16's, or maybe some Chrysler 15's that will push the wheels out by half an inch or so. Running 16's I would probably go with a 215/60R16, and 15's a 215/70R15. These will measure out to nearly 28', should I stick to 27' at the max??

I have the luck of being able to try out the setups before I go all in, but just wanted some advice as I am pretty early in the planning stages of lifting it.

Actually NO. I have not droped any of my driveline from raising my Leggo on OB stuff. As I hear it you can lift things up to 2" taller than stock before you need to consider droping driveline to maintain proper axle geometry. Over 2" (Like forester or OB strut lift, plus raised springs and/or lift blocks), then you need to drop the driveline with all the stuff from this thread (page 49) at post #1212 http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1228188&page=49

I have pep boys proline aftermarket Al wheels and unfortunately do not know their offset. My setup is fine with them, so i assume its a propper offset. My spare is a steelie from a 93 legacy, and seems to be a bit more negative? (The tire looks to set medially a bit when comparing where the tire is to the mudflap)... but i have not done the math nor the research to confirm a difference in offset.

I'd say you may be better of with a little offset (positive?) to push them out a touch, just to prevent inside rubbing on wheel lock up front. I agree with your tire size for the 16 (that's where I'm going next), but think 28 might be too tall, for front rubbing... Although a BFH will solve that, and it's probly just the plastic fender liner that you'll hit...

I have the luck of being able to try out the setups before I go all in, . . .

Well that's a luxury for sure!!! While you're at it, find out if second gen OB coils will seat in first gen OB struts. I'm particularly interested if 2000-2002/3 (gen 2 OB) H-6 or H-4 (most interested in H-6 coils) front coils will go in 96-99 (gen 1) OB struts...

Congrats on the lifting project. I'd LOVE to see befre and after from lowered to raised!! That'd rock, you'd go like 4-6 inches suspension/ground clearance difference!!

Essentially bolt and go, no mods needed.

Get 97-99 Outback struts and springs (you could reuse your legacy springs to save money and increase the hassle).
3 tophat nuts and 2 hub bolts per strut.
A little cut-bend-insert-rebend for the brakelines. that way you don't have to drain the brake fluid and deal with undoing brake fittings.

then enjoy increased ride height, fill in the wheel wells with taller tires.

enjoy!

I think OB parts too. From 2001 on the legacy platform (legacies and legacy outbacks) got a different rear suspension from foresters and imprezas. BUT as such you can still lift legacies with same model year outback parts. So I think you'd looks for 05-09 outback stuff. front struts will swap straight over and the rear shock and separate coil spring should swap straight over.

**BUT** I am not that familiar with these newer bodies. I say all this with my understanding of those set-ups, but i still think outback into legacy from same model year/body code should do the trick...

best! :smt023

Maybe Consider 98-01 forester springs for a touch more lift, but you'll need the FOR upper spring perches for the front.

Otherwise 98 OB stuff is a straight swap..

I was reading on other sites about putting the forester struts and springs in, but others have said that that will put everything at too steep of angles and i would need to drop my trans, motor, dif, and so on...Sounds like to much work, then i ran across this post and i was pumped. They will be coming from the junk yard, and the other struts ive bought there have been a whole assembly, strut and spring. And will the forester top hats match up both front and rear? superu

Yes, good points and questions.

Here's a little more detail to explain some of this stuff ;)

I'm not that hip on body codes (i.e. BD, BG, etc.) but rather go by model year or generation.
you (as do I) have a second generation legacy (95-99).
First generation OB (yes, you're right in decifering my shorthand, OB = outback, FOR = forester) are typically 96-99 but the "outback" label was used on the 95 OB, which was NOT the OB we now now. It did NOT have the increased ride height and gearing, but really just a bumper and 2-tone paint scheme.

At any rate 1st gen OB = 96-99.

1st generation FOR is (in the US) 98-02

2nd gen forester is 03-08.

SO there are a few ways you can lift your gen 2 legacy using 1st gen OB and both generation FOR parts.

1st and easiest is get 1st gen OB struts (complete assemblies will save you the hassle of spring compressors).
2nd gen FOR complete strut assemblies (strut, spring, upper spring perches and top hats). NOT recommended on your rig
1st gen OB struts with 1st gen FOR springs, but using 1st gen FOR upper spring perches (in front) and top hats all around (I'm pretty sure OB top hats would be fine too, but safer is easier sometimes...)

So for the details:
If you have air tools, then just get struts (and tire rack has a pretty good price for new struts) would be fine and you could reuse your Legacy springs. I'm told Legacy and OB springs are the same (95-99).
OR complete, used, assemblies from a junk yard would be easy and cheap, but used...

Or for a touch more lift than all OB parts, use OB struts and 1st gen FOR springs.

The most lift on your rig would be 2nd gen FOR strut assembles, but you're right that would push you over the critical 2"taller than stock metric. At 2" and more over stock you should drop the driveline with all those OB spacers and cross members to keep your axle angles good. Dropping the drive line parts actually makes you lose a bit of what you gained by strut-lifting a NON-outback legacy.

1st gen FOR struts lift similar to 1st gen OB struts, but the lower spring perch is closer to the tire (it's a little further down the strut shaft when compared to the OB strut, I think to allow for the taller FOR spring) and will not afford as tall of a tire as OB struts do.

So, OB struts will push your rig about 1.5" taller than stock, add 1st gen FOR springs to that and you'll get .5" -.75" MORE lift than OB springs. 2nd gen FOR strut assemblies will lift an 96-99 OB 1.5", so that would theoretically lift your Legacy L 3" over stock.

So, bang for buck, go either all OB strut/spring or OB strut/1st gen FOR spring. Stay away from the 2nd gen FOR stuff.
OB struts will gain you 1.5" clearance, you can squeeze 27" tires under there, and with 1st gen FOR springs, you'll get more body lift above those big tires.
Thus 1.5" lift from struts, 27" tires are 1.5" taller radius than stock tires (185x70 14) and with FOR springs it might give you a little more putting you around 3+ MORE ground clearance than stock.

An easy way to think about this ground clearance is you can drive over a cinder block. I'm at about 9.5"-10" from the ground to my rear diff protector and I think 8.5" - 9" from the ground to my second cat.

I hope this makes sense and clears up the talk of forester this, outback that...
Checkout this thread: http://ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=111093

superu
12-09-2010, 11:49 AM
Nope!
You'll need a jack, jack stands, a 19mm socket (and breaker bar)and combo wrench for the 2 strut bolts and (I think) a 14 mm socket for the three top hat nuts per strut, and a hack saw or end nippers, something to cut the tab open, which hold the brake lines in the struts.

It's an unbolt, swap, and bolt-on instant lift. You can zip-tie the brake lines into the tabs, or cut, bend insert and re-bend those tabs on your OB struts.

Good luck and add pictures (do you have a build thread on this project?) Do some before then after measureing of ground clearances. ground to rear diff, ground to "Y" pipe and ground to cat are good measures, also ground to top of fender and hub (center of wheel) to top of fender0.

Ps are you coming to any rallies soon?

It's just the extra height from the struts that's making the wheels all crooked. He WILL need an alignment when it's all done, probably a camber kit as well (special amber adjusting bolts with a camming knob on the bolt's shaft, to adjust camber) He can leave the sway bar, that won't affect alignment, just handling characteristics.. Also, when the springs compress a touch after driving, that'll settle things out a bit too.

Every time I jack my car off the ground and lower it back, I gain like 1.5-2 inches of lift!!! Then it settles again :(

I'm going to try to make the Feb rally, I hear March 26-27 will be a western states championship! It'd be cool to make that too, but probably not

On another note, I changed my rear sway bar to a stock outback rear sway (11mm stock legacy to 16 mm stock OB).
Ooh my, I love the difference in handling!! Much stiffer rear end, flatter body roll and less understeer. :smt023

Yeah, I'm pretty sure.
When you get the sway bar, grab the end links and the brackets with bushings (the bushings account for a thicker bar that your factory legacy or LSi bushings won't) that hold the bar to the body. You'll see them when you get under the car.

Are you thinking of this for your new sedan project? Get an OB front bar too, I think they're 18mm whereas the legacy is like 15.

I got an OB tranny.
Remember when I was going to come up there to JY for a tranny this weekend, well, I found one in Grand Junction (which is like 1.5 hours from Moab) from a 99 outback limited. So I got that 2ish weeks ago and have been swapping.

So, now I have 4.11s AND reverse.... once I finish details like the clutch and hill holder adjustment and narrow down a clunking from the front driver's side (I suspect we may have separated or crushed a half shaft in the removal process) I'll get to drive again. :smt026 :smt026

AND, I will have done a transmission swap FTW?!!

I haven't found a dual range with a ej period.

Those D/R came in outbacks, legacies, foresters, imprezas, pretty much everywhere but the U.S....
I'd prefer one from a Forester or one from an OB with EJ25 would work Best would be 97-98 forester.

but, yeah it's tough. From what I hear, most importers don't deal with the NA stuff, so it's hard to get those guys to look for one for you...
Please keep checking with your sources for JDM engines though.

But you and I do. . . . :smt027
That said, just think of the capability of a Subaru, full time AWD 5MT (standard i.e. 50:50 split until VC slippage) and rear CLSD, but WITH a low range!!!!! :smt071
I know I know, the Aussies know all about it, but not so many here in the U.S. do.

It's funny how the car parts stores labelled my wife's old 93 IMP 4EAT as 4WD, but my 95 LEG is AWD... Not even the computer parts look-up systems knows the difference. sheesh

upgraded rear diff.

wait for it. . . .

CLSD!!!!

Take 40-tooth (i.e. 4.11 axle ratio, yo!) ring gear from open carrier on left and install on LS carrier on right
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2011/10/0930111209_01-1.jpg

put that crown gear from this
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2011/10/P1030494JPG-1.jpg

And put it on this
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2011/10/P1030493JPG-1.jpg

to make it look like this
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2011/10/P1030495JPG-1.jpghttps://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2011/10/0930111247-1.jpg

grind the little bumps from the inside of the case to make LS unit fit in diff

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2011/10/P1030500JPG-1.jpg

Then you have SWEETNESS!!!
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2011/10/P1030499JPG-1.jpg

You must have side covers (and shims) from door LS diff! This LS unit makes it a male rear diff requiring rear half shafts that are female inner CV with male outer CV (aka 1st gen legacy half shafts).

Then the diff's gear oil refill WITH the LSD conditioner (very important), plus help from the little guy!
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2011/10/P1030502JPG-1.jpg

Now I'm running a CLSD with 4.11s and a 5MT with the mudrat baja bumper, 3+ inches over stock (OB struts, FOR springs rear, SVX springs front), LGT steering rack, OB RSB, 27" Grabber AT2s, and the want for a serious off road test drive !

Yeah?

Did you pull the front diff, but leave the pinon gear and shaft (to keep the balance inside the output shaft going into the center diff), then cap the front axle ports and pull the front axles?

or what?

Soul Shinobi
10-08-2011, 04:02 PM
This is me researching, haha. Pulling the front diff sounds like a good idea to loose some weight, but more work to split the case. I know some people leave front axle stubs in, spinning freely I assume.

When I was young there were heaps of slammed WRX's where I lived and I remember saying if I ever had one I'd be different and go rally style - raised, high prifile tyres etc... and now you guys are doing it. Respect.

i<3mysubi
10-09-2011, 01:02 AM
so here are some answers to the rWD conversion

as for front axles.
we cut the boots and pulled the axles out of the "wheel side" but we left the bearing race with the splines and nut IN THE WHEEL, to hold the wheel bearing in. so basically it was an empty end of the cv axle. i should take some pics. the axles were essentially sacrificed for this, but the bearings were bad anyway.

so then we welded the "center diff" as shown.

we were going to take out the front diff. we decided it was going to save 15 pounds. but in the end we left it in.
now you could just let the gear still drive it. the diff would still spin, but equal power would go to the rear, so no power would be lost by leaving it in.
however, we took of that crown gear, the one that you replaced mark, so you could have 4.11s. it saved about 5-6 pounds and it allowed the front diff to just sit in there, and not be driven by anything. so the splines on the diff dont even spin.
then we didnt have to worry about making plugs or buying them.

it works pretty good. and more reliable than AWD, because essentally you will break the rear tires loose before you break any tranny internals.

i will try to take some pictures

EDIT: and what would be really sweet , you could leave the full front diff in, have the welded diff, and put front axles in. then you would have 50/50 power split and equal wheel spin all the time. would not be ideal for a DD but a track or off road car haha

one more thing, ya those are 27 X 10.5's the spacers and truck rims allow him to clear the perches no probs. i dont know if you can see in the picture but his rear wheel well is cut clear to the rear door. and his wheel adapters really stick the wheels out!!so he flings some mud! that is why he just put cherokee fenders on....and to pass inspection

@ I>3mysubi & Soul Shinobi

I kind of thought of quick disconnects for the sway bar for off-roading but never really looked into it, but I LOVE the RSB for rally and "spirited driving"
With the OB RSB but still the short legacy brackets, etc. It's kind of a PITA to line up bolts, so I don't think it would be too practical to go the route of removing ewnd links or disconnecting the stock hardware...thus maybe quick disconnects would be the way to go.

Soul Shinobi
10-22-2011, 09:17 AM
You still have the Legacy body mounts? The stock mounts aren't too strong, and you might tear them with that improper fitment (a lot of people weld small reinforcements to them). I think I have some Outback rear swaybar body mounts if you want them.

modified the rear deck with DIY LATCH anchors
Door latch bar for the center and Fixe climbing anchors (ring removed) for the sides (but you could use the climbing anchors for all three as the mounting is there for all three).

There are captive nuts under the deck (you can see them from the trunk), and the deck board already has holes above the nuts, so I just punched a small drill bit through the deck fabric and bolted the anchor down.

Yeah, glad to share. :smt026
I'd suggest the Fixe anchor (and cut off the ring) for all three spots, but I had already done the center with a door catch-bar before I thought to try (or really noticed) the captive nuts already mounted (access from the trunk) under the rear deck.
With kid #2 coming in the next 3 weeks or so, I had to make anchors for the sides to fit 2 car seats in the legacy,
sooooo, necessity being the mother of invention :smt002

I got these, then cut off the ring

Added DIY LATCH anchors to the back seat. These will complete the system, perfectly complementing the deck LATCH previously installed.
I pulled the bolts, then had to grind out the anchor's 10 mm hole to accept the car's 12 mm bolt
I used Fixe climbing anchors with rap rings (load bearing to 18 Kn or 4046.51 pound force, or 18,000 joules/meter)
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/01/032040_300x373gif-1.jpg

I attached the anchors to the seat belt anchors under the rear seat.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/01/P1030807JPG-1.jpg

The outer seat belt anchors have a captive nut on a plate (visible in the rear wheel well), so I assume the inner anchors are similar
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/01/P1030821JPG-1.jpg

I chose the outer seatbelt anchor as it's load bearing and structural for shock loads, when compared to the seat mounting point.

I just want to put this link somewhere and others might find it useful too.
It's from Exedy and how to choose a clutch. It verifies what I learned about choosing a stage II racing clutch for a non-race application, and why it wore out so quickly. I was told that the stage II would have stronger holding power than stock (and it did, waaaay stronger), but it also wore out in 58K miles.

At any rate, if you're thinking about a racing clutch there is good info here, or if you think a racing clutch is a fun idea in your daily driver, read this also.

I would advice you not to use that gasket and use permatex grey (which i think is equivalent to fujibond). I did the same with my car and used an aftermarket oil pan gasket and all it did was leaked by the trans area

yeah, first time doing a gasket... i guess i should've foregone it (given all your comments), BUT I didn't and now its there...

Did cam seals front and rear, front main, oil pan, valve covers then put it together...

THEN 3 weeks later ...........................................................

my dualer arrived!!!!!!!!

SOOOO, NOW I just finished swapping out the 99 OB 5MT for a gen 1 FOR AUDM FT DR 5MT, 4.11 FD with 1.44:1 lo!!!!!

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/10/P1080961JPGglUS-1.jpg
(ooh from the mouths of babes... http://youtu.be/KGVpZ2lSXm0 )

@ i<3mysubi I'd LOVE to put in more power but since I don't have an EG33 laying around for install, I stuck with the stocker EJ22 with 170 K, and now (I'm pretty sure) its leak free!! YES

Did the rear main while I was there and put on the new throw out bearing I had from my clutch last year-ish ago...

Did some initial testing, and the low range with 4.11 FD is pretty sweet for bolt-on Subaru awesomeness!!!!!
Just need to make a lever and make it pretty inside.

SO, I am (as far as I know, having looked into this for like 7 years), I'm the 3rd working dual range AWD 5MT in the States. There's another (the first to make it here) but it's never been installed and is now being sold by its 4th US owner. . .

At any rate, sit back and let the "OOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHs) and "AAAAAHHHHHS" begin!! ;)

straightened the pinch weld, scuffed the paint to bare steel every 13" for 1.5" then welded 1" angle iron against the pinch weld, inside and out. Then hammered the weld back against the angle iron and welded it down.

Next to wire-wheel it , prime and bedliner it. Maybe silicone b/t he welds then cover it up with liner

Hey where did you get your dual Range stuff and ow much? My buddy wants one now

took 8 years of research and want, 3 years of knowing what I wanted and trying to get help, then once that was secured and a deal brokered, it took a years from "yeah I'll buy it" . . . to ring ring "uum, I got a transmission for ya on th' truck, wehr ye' wan it?"

I dealt with an Australian forum-er from other boards. I had feelers our for a couple years until someone stepped forward and followed through on helping me find one, buy it, drain it, store it, prep it, pack it, and drop it at the appropriate place, once I secured shipping.

SO all told it was around $1400 (about a grand in U$ shipping and the box was $450 AU$)

I may have a lead on others. . . probaly just liberty ones though (they're waay easier to find and cheaper), but that low gear is easily swapped for a better low reduction.

here's one that's available state-side that's bounced around for a few years, never been installed in the US, AND he just lowered his asking price (surely for the holidays ;)

New info has come to light...
check vtec_motors on ebay. They're a JDM distributor in Canada and you can scora a dual range 5MT from them for wAAAAy cheaper shipping than I paid.
There's a NA EJ20 WITH DR 5MT attached on there now for about what I paid shipped for my transmission alone!!

Although its a gen 2 forester (so it should have the low gear swapped out), it's still 4.11 and low bolt-on

well, the 5MT is a VLSD center so that's not a thing, and I have a CLSD rear
BUT it would be sweet if I could figure out how to make the stock VLSD center into a locking center BUT keepingit as FT AWD, THAT'st the trick of awesomeness i'd like. That way I can keep full time AWD BUT lock the center for rear 4x4. The rear diff I have now (an RX LS stuffed into an outback 4.11 ring gear) is sweet but I think it already needs some shims. Turns out a VLSD would be a better DD for an AWD, as I think this CLSD was pretty tight and locking up all the time when driving on pavement as a DD...
live and learn eh?

;)

They are becoming more common through eBay JDM importers. There are some variations and details to be mindful of (final drive, low gearing ratios, # bolt on bell housing, etc.)

Give me details and I'll give you details. I know there may be one available in CO pretty soon, otherwise through eBay JDMers, you can typically get one bought and shipped for around $800ish.
