Found this guy in Portland area 2 hour drive, I have cash. Have my rear main seal, hg leaking and 147k miles on orignal motor. He of course swaps all my sensors and what not over. What do you guys think?

For $1400 longblock, the rebuild includes valve grind, the heads and case are refaced for the new updated OEM head gaskets, the case is bored 20 over for new pistons, all new main, cam seals and valve stem seals, and new new rod and main bearings and they come with a 12 month 12,000 mile warranty.

thats a pretty good deal man. definitely not the price you would get from the stealership! If the guy does good work.. id say go for it. Be the best $1400 bux you ever spent and you wont have to worry about it breaking down on your later and costing you tow charges, etc.

i agree with d1giPhux. seems like breakdowns happen at the worst times.

have you thought of just buying a new(used) one? jdm or usdm? and swapping it..

may be a bit cheaper..

Well give me places for new (used) and I will swap it in myself...

The way I read that ad, 1400 was for everything you mentioned, except pistons. His older ad specified this, and went on to say 1700 included pistons. Either way that's a good deal.

Well a 3rd gen would be a 2.5 SOHC, isn't that what we're talking about?

03-10-2010, 02:41 AM
ya but if he's swapping it, it wouldn't matter right?

If your not going to upgrade the engine.. why go with a JDM one? Id say stick with the USDM spec and get it completely rebuilt. Unless the JDM engines are rebuilt for those prices, I don't see why it would be an advantage. Not to mention, you would be supporting a local and could see the work he does in the process perhaps?

From your op I would just have it rebuilt, sounds like a good price. He is doing more for less than what I was charged by the local subaru dealer.

Guy name Ken welter, does Subaru swaps into air crafts, does machinery and what not...

Well this month has been nothing but hell for me... Still jobless searching every day... Both front axle blew grease out of the boots/original 147k miles now... Last week my headgasket on my driver side starting pissing on me... Then yesterday had my first blow out on the freeway so had to get 4 new tires from Discount... Things can't get any worse!

So I emailed Ken about the rebuilds and he still does them. Wondering if anyone has got a rebuild done from him since I last posted in March. Im in need of just a fresh rebuild motor to get this off the back of my mind.

sounds like a great deal on the rebuild that's the option I'd choose

Yeah I got an ej25d from him, 6k miles on it now, everything runs perfect. I got the one with oversized pistons, the engine pulls real nice and is super quiet, which is a new experience for me with Subarus.

So he is legit then? He told me he does come up to Seattle like once a month but am kind of in need so might drop the car off down there, take the amtrack train home and back down there. Not really sure yet, he said he's a week out on a 2.5L.

Longblock with all new everything important including headgaskets? Do it. Sure you can source a new used engine but you're still going to pay to have the source engine machined, pay for parts and stuff. They're used engines so that stuff will happen anyway.

He did good on my build. I don't know anyone else who is running his motor, but he'll build you one to your specifications if you want.
