when i go on my weekly drives i push pretty hard... whats the chances of stock Links failing?

Not very high - because they actually flex, you'd have to twist up pretty hard to break them. It's like comparing a popsicle to a twizler...kinda. Try the bar with the stock links, and if you need more stiffness adjust the bar. If you need more, get new links. But just keep in mind entry angles and overall flexion.

Ya those are the sti ones he bought for the rear that are actually for the front! Oh well, live and learn right?

Any word on the bilsteins?

those are rear links. i wouldnt have had a problem with them if i had flipped my lateral links over. my local rally shop has a few STI parts cars. only one had its rear links and they were both bent at 90°. on the front STI links the studs arn't on the same side. the studs point in opposite directions. rears point the same way like my photo.

C-shaped only came on WRXs 2002-2007, Impreza & 2.5RS & legacy 1993-2007
the ones i had came on STI / Forester 2004-2007

Any word on the bilsteins?

they will be here monday. might rock the GTB springs they come with until my taxs get back. then maybe H&R Sports or H&R OE Sports.

Oh i see, my bad. Just making up stuff and pretending I know things again...

I think you know the drill with GTB springs, it'll ride high in the front and normal height in the back. It will be a little weird looking, but it will ride pretty nice.

i didnt know really much anything about suspension either. Best knowledge you can get is from people who actually work on our cars for a living. luckily my mechanic builds rally cars. can knows alot about Subaru's since he has worked on them for 20 years or so.

yea i thought i read something about that funky ride height.

The ride height is wonky when you mix up GTB and RS suspension. If you have GTB springs, I would think it'd match (but not sure). I put RS suspension (visually identical to GTB suspension) on a Brighton wagon and it had the 'saggy butt'. It could also be that the Brighton didn't have the twin turbo setup (and weight) in the front... in which case it would have that effect on all non-twin turbo models. Who knows.

However, people always just call the Bilsteins "GTB suspension" when in fact BOTH RSs and GTBs received them. I would think there are differences since the back end weights are different.
So if you have an 'uneven' effect, it may be that.

wrong info. 2nd gens have C-shaped. ive only seen a BH on a lift and they have long sti looking endlinks. no real idea for 4th gens.

well hopefully i luck out and get some GTB springs. im sure the struts are the same. i think its the sedan spring rates that give that saggy affect. it wont matter for long planning on ordering a set of H&Rs after WCSS. and butt spacers.

dropped the car off this morning to get the Bilsteins on. also im having the front GT springs swapped onto the front to avoid the lifted front syndrome-thanks toby! looks like they will be ready for WCSS this weekend. then after that H&R sport springs will be put on order.

installed. ride height is exactly as i expected it to be...high. looks like a good reason to get some springs. the state of the KYBs i was running is that they are both completely blown

Navi271
08-26-2011, 01:12 AM
Haha, 2 of my struts were blown when I replaced them with bilsteins as well!

Higher than stock ride height?

rocketlegacy

Higher than stock ride height?
the ride height is Outback-ishly high especially in the front even with swapping GT springs on. i can fit my entire fist between the top of the tire and the fender on the front. the rear sits normal.

So that's why the RS suspension had the same effect on the Brighton...

Huffer
08-26-2011, 10:16 AM
Yeah - it has to do with the valving that Bilstein provided Subaru from factory. The nice thing is that Bilsteins are rebuildable and revalvable. If you can provide corner weights for your car with the Bilsteins installed, I bet Bilstein could rebuild them to an appropriate spec. Right now, they extremely resistant to the lighter USDM front end. Imagine the lift if a lightweight JDM front bumper was swapped on.

I think a good compromise might be Bilsteins in the rear, and new KYB GR2's in the front. It's a compromise for sure, but unless you have moneybags, everything's a compromise.

Navi271
08-26-2011, 03:54 PM
Does it handle well tho? I wouldn't be able to do KYB's in the front with bilsteins in the back because of the big handling decrease. The fender gap with GT springs was by far the most noticeable, when you get lowering springs it will look much better. Just search some others that have bilsteins and then added H&R's. You'll find a lot of happy customers.

Well, it was a Japanese Brighton, so it had the lighter bumper. But I'm going off topic...

rocketlegacy
08-27-2011, 01:00 AM
i thought about putting my GT-B front springs back on. they have 1 coil "less" of the spring compared the GT ones and might drop it down a bit. i thought when i swapped them it was going to be stiffer because of the TT H4 it was made for. and it would raise it more, but who knows now.

Yamazaki
08-27-2011, 03:52 AM
Whoa. The Brighton didn't have THAT big of a gap. You say that's with GT springs? Yeah, I'd put the GT-B/RS springs back on. It shouldn't be as high up in the front.

On another note - I like that your car doesn't have a retarded bump in the roof. I'm jealous.

rocketlegacy
08-27-2011, 05:49 AM
i hate it. but not enough to spend more money to fix the height in the front. tomorrow ill see what i can do but if its stupid pricing to swap the GT-B back on then no. ill wait for H&Rs and ill just have to hide my car from the eyes of the general public till then.

lol dude I have the EXACT same amount of wheel gap with my Bilstein's on GT-B springs! I honestly don't think its going to make any difference swapping the springs back over.

I'd wait for your H&R's or get STi springs. Look at Navi271's ride height with Bilstein's. Its just abut perfect in my opinion.

I bet the ride is a lot better though, right?

the front gap has toned down its about a 4 finger gap now. right after they got on it was 6 fingers. :smt017 . so stock was 3ish.

I think they should work. The STI springs I have on my car would work on a 04-07 impreza. I never saw a difference between the way wrx and sti springs seat onto the strut of those years. The rear springs should be tapered at the top, so you'll have to get some 04-07 impreza rear top hats. You might also have to get the upper spring perches for the front springs as well.

same but it can wait till next week to start. noticed when the car was on the lift i had torn front axle boots on both sides. had them changed instead of starting exhaust. i think its more important to get mechanical stuff fixed before modifications. slight set back to the plan but it will get there. gonna slowly piece it together so i dont have to blow my week's budget to kingdom come on one day.

Looks amazing. Pretty much how I want my car to look, but white.
Please post a sound clip of your exhaust when finished. I've thought about catless
will do having a friend with a DSLR which records sound in 720p record it. videos are only as good as the system that recorded it. so i want as good as i can get it.

Headers......who, where and how much please. Im looking into making the investestment but not sure on what to get
i just got these. seems to be the consensus on what to get if you want UEL. apparently they hold up a tad better then actual Borlas. we'll see.

Love your wagon! You have the H&R springs? Your car looks like its at stock height? I wanted to
get those springs but they dont make them for wagons but i hear they work.

Also did you tint the headlights or remove the amber lens? I am digging it! Cant wait to get my

That's not stock height, they say don't use sedan springs on the wagons because they are heavier.

yes! except some sometimes we have to since theres not many options out there for wagon-neers. my H&Rs were off a WRX wagon. but still my car is heavy inducing saggy butt.

I've decided on the Enkei's. gonna go for the 18x7.5's i can get them new for just over 700. where as the equivalent Tenzos(18x8) are just over 1000. also from doing some reading the tenzos are heavier  . another plus for the Enkeis is that if i run a 215/40 r18 they take up roughly the same space in the wheel well as my stock 16's do with 205/55's

if the tenzo's actually concaved like that i would jump on them.

Wow Casey your car is looking really good! Its come so far - definitely one of the better 2nd gen GT's stateside.

I thought I'd say what I would add/ change (if it were mine) to make it really pop. Its all my opinion, again it looks good as-is.

1st - Forget about all those cheap Enkei's you were looking at. The only good Enkei's for these are the RPF1's - g0 17x8 +45. That or Advan RG's or save up more and buy Volk.
2nd. Paint the RFRB grill body color, the ganador mirrors body color and match the skirts, front bumper and rear bumper lip all to rio red. It'll look way more modern, and much lower & more aggressive.
3rd. Add aero guards front & rear and paint those too.
4th. Take off the rub strips that lay flat on the roof - the three strips. Have the holes filled & painted. I really like that you took off the crossbars, much cleaner.
5th. Tuck that exhaust more so it sits flush (small detail)
6th. Raise it up a little more in the rear. Just looks slightly broken cause it sits SO low.

Seriously though, I am really jealous of your wagon! Looks really mean. Nicely done.

I put in this same model CF STi strut bar a month or so ago. I had to trim away a bit of the hood insulation and reroute the washer sprayer hoses in order to get the hood to close. It looks like you've removed your hood scoop cover plate, do you have a hard time getting the hood closed or spraying your wiper washers?

No issues.Cool, thanks for the report. I smooshed a plastic "T" (that splits the sprayer hose from the tank pump to 2 lines to the 2 nozzles) between the bar and hood on mine, and other configurations pinched the hose such that there was no spray at all. I ended up having to reroute under the bar with plenty of extra hose.

any noticeable difference in handling??? FWIW (and I don't mean to take away from Rocket's ride thread) but in my case I didn't really notice any change from going from no bar straight to the STi bar. I am running on fully stock USDM GT suspension, however, so I may not feel the full benefit until I make some addition upgrades.

Thanks Rocket, nice Leggy you've got there!

I wondered why you guys were having problems with the STi bar cos I wouldn't have thought there'd be that much difference between JDM and USDM. The other I noticed the washer hose was hanging loose, on closer inspection the bar was crushing the splitter. Guess I'll have to follow your lead.

The first one will be a long shot! Takes forever to get there from where we live. I think I have been there once in my life... haha

The second I live about 40 minutes from... We still know it as SIR (Seattle International Raceway), but they changed the name a few years back. That one is a possibility I could make that... If we did a cruise, it would be on a Sunday. Brad works Saturday and thats the day I go to church... but we can maybe try and setup a cruise for one of those weekends for a Sunday and that would work good if your already up here. :smt023

most definitely will we are doing R&D on my car i will make a forsale thread when they are ready.

Saweet! What's unique about 'em?
they are made from Ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene or UHMW.

".....its very tough material, with the highest impact strength of any thermoplastic presently made. It is highly resistant to corrosive chemicals with exception of oxidizing acids; has extremely low moisture absorption and a very low coefficient of friction; is self-lubricating; and is highly resistant to abrasion, in some forms being 15 times more resistant to abrasion than carbon steel. Its coefficient of friction is significantly lower than that of nylon and acetal, and is comparable to that of polytetrafluoroethylene (Teflon), but UHMWPE has better abrasion resistance than PTFE. It is odorless, tasteless, and nontoxic...."

i got to get ready for WCSS. and theres no way im making it to the Big NW meet. i have enough cash put away that i can get some rims on the car before the Subaru Show. but in the mean time i did my headliner all black. with some suede. and boy was it is a pain in the ass. should have just dyed it like the carpets. i also decided it would be best to black out my trim bits to blend with the headliner. i used fabric paint for the sunroof visor and sun visors. and fabric paint sucks more then HRT Cosworth (if you get this reference to best racing in the world, we'll be BFFs). it didnt do anything. 5 coats in its still grayish.

I miss my lip on mine but, 1. daily driving got nerve racking with scraping and flexing on drive ways and, 2. needed to be fitted better so I took it off completely.

That looks... well... Positivley evil... I fucking love it! Only thing i'm not keen on is the 'pink' (matte factory red?) lip part of the bumper.

Wagon is looking great! The interior looks great too. I have always hated the grey headliner in my car. Carpet I ignore, but the mats... I am seriously thinking I need to dye those black now. Thanks a lot! *grrrr* ;)

Like I said on FB... When you hit a hard corner, you will hate life, but I love the look!

1. They are NOT stretched and thats how I roll... :smt023
2. almost perfect offset... Just a little too close to the rear QT's...
3. Love the wheels them selves!

Yeah there's plenty of other black parts on the car to make the skirts look right at home, it's about time!!! Looks so good.
