Started if the day by registering the car.passed safety am l/m no prob. So I picked up some new wheels. Then washed the car and polished the lights and fixed the JDM fog lights and glued on the subie embelm. Also picked a hoodscoop from a 90s outback sport, a steering wheel and mud flaps for all four wheels.http://i251.photobucket.com/albums/gg281/gulfport_chad/IMAG0057.jpghttp://i251.photobucket.com/albums/gg281/gulfport_chad/IMAG0064.jpghttp://i251.photobucket.com/albums/gg281/gulfport_chad/IMAG0072.jpghttp://i251.photobucket.com/albums/gg281/gulfport_chad/IMAG0062.jpghttp://i251.photobucket.com/albums/gg281/gulfport_chad/IMAG0061.jpg

chuckthefuk

Two LCD screens.. On each screen you have the Factory Service Manual for each harness.. Move systematically until its merged.. hours of tracing and solder, shrink wrap and burns :-p

Ok ill give it a try. And if not send it to metric motors. Oh yeah and I got the paint. I decided to go with rally blue, single stage. I figured forest green would be a pain to cover with white. And it will probably get banged up so no point in putting a lot of money in paint. I'll post pics of the color after I test shoot it.

Yeah I did the wiring in the swap myself. It's surprisingly easy, but you need both ECU pinouts. Then make a spreadsheet and start filling in the blanks. I want to do another swap project but I don't have time or space right now...

lord flashheart
12-18-2010, 09:25 PM
Do u know where I can get the ecu printout? Is your impreza pretty quick? Any guesses on what kind of performance I will see from this? How high do these jdm engines rev? How much turbo lag do these have?

elislider
12-19-2010, 02:12 AM
i can tell you anything you want to know about that engine you have pictured above
JDM MY97-98 v3/4 STi EJ20K
shim under bucket, 8250 stock fuel cut, 7900 redline, sodium filled valves, vf23 turbo
3 plug ecu (i sure hope you got an uncut harness and ecu with the engine)
wasted spark instead of coilpacks

the EJ20K STi is one of the most aggressively tuned factory STi's, at least 280chp

i can give you the JDM ecu pinout but i dont have a ecu pinout for a 95 Legacy

Well, the STi Ver III and the STi Ver IV had different power outputs... In addition to that, the IV feels even stronger because of it's different tune. The III had a more linear power curve while the IV had a sharper curve when the turbo spooled up. The cams and heads were also different. The heads on the IV were the same as the V and VI.
In short, they should not be lumped together when referencing the engines.

Fun fact: The STI Ver IV was what the 22B was based off of.

elislider

agreed.

in other news the coolant tank on that JDM engine looks like its not original... unless its a very early MY97 engine

That would be great if you could give me as much info on the jdm wiring as possible. and unfortunately its a cut harness. ecu and turbo come with it. I have to get my own intercooler. I couldn't find a motor with the harness intact I'm still mulling over the idea of a EZ30R swap instead of jdm swap. But I'm not sure what that intails. And a high compression hybrid 2.2-2.5 is still tumbling around in my head. The company I bought the motor from will do the wiring for about $900. But that would push the budget right to the limit. As for the motor, I'm not 100% positive its a ej20k. I just looked it over and used my jdm knowledge best as I could to figure what it was and based on the ignition system I thought it was a EJ20K. It could be a k or g of a 7 for all I know lol.

I suggest an EZ30D instead of an EZ30R. Supposedly, the immobilizer makes it really difficult to swap.

do you have any more pictures of the engine, or of the vin tag from the car the engine came from (usually importers include those). how much of the wiring between the engine and the ECU is included?

lord flashheart
12-19-2010, 02:46 PM
Haha well the engine swap budget is about $2000. I got the jdm motor for 900 bucks and paying metric to wire it will be another 900 plus an intercooler puts me right on for my budget.( and yes I've got an exhaust for the jdm motor.) I am just curious on the pros and cons of an h6 vs a jdm swap.

I don't have anymore pics. I'll grab some when I go to the shop tomorrow. And I'm not sure. He didn't tell me because I was just going to have them do the wiring.
Just a little side info, I'm getting the motor from metric motors in Utah. They are very highly recommended by everyone I've talked to including the dealer. They offen build 800hp subaru engines. They rebuilt the EJ255 in my outback with forged internal and basically made it a
Ej257. The guy who is doing The wiring does nothing but wire Subaru swaps. He has a sweet rhd GC with a jdm swap. I'm just telling everyone their reputation so u know I didn't get it from some shitty eBay seller.

elislider
12-19-2010, 03:33 PM
theres some very reputable ebay sellers, I got my swap a few years ago from JHot.
sounds like youve already got everything mostly figured out and planned, once you get the engine in there, you'll forget about the other swaps you could have done, because the EJ20K sti is pretty awesome :)

lord flashheart
12-19-2010, 03:49 PM
Ok sweet. Anything I need to look for when doing the swap as far as vacuum lines, egr, and emissions related stuff.

lord flashheart
12-22-2010, 06:51 PM
So tiny update. I decided to for go the turbo option (as bad as I want to do a turbo swap) and the same company is going to build me a 200-225 HP 2.5 naturally aspired engine that will be 'plug n' play' with my wiring harness and ecu. It will have a virtually flat torque curve. Which IMO will be better for rally cross. Anything more than 200 HP on dirt is hard to control. And with the turbo lag it would make it even more difficult.( I know this because of how my outback turbo reacts on dirt. It's ether I get no over steer with no boost. Or my ass end is trying to pass me.)

elislider
12-22-2010, 07:20 PM
Did you mean you're not going to do the turbo option? Wanna sell that turbo engine?

lord flashheart

Perhaps. Make me an offer.

lord flashheart
12-23-2010, 11:52 AM
I talked to them they will ship the motor to a business for 150 and the motor was a little over 900 bucks after taxes. The motor is tested and and in good shape. If your really interested let me know and I get hi res photos of it and more info.

Colors are going to be rally blue with gold wheels (I know how played out that is) with the race stripes on the frender like so... I also pulled a gold legacy banging to match the wheels.

lord flashheart
01-07-2011, 11:10 AM
Yeah auto body isn't that difficult, Did you do a single stage or a dual stage (paint and clear coat) on you accord?
If you need any pointers just ask. It's mostly in the prep work. The better job you do on preping the car the better it looks 99% of the time.
I'm hoping to spray tomorrow. As well as get the transmission for it, because the first race in this baby is on Saturday Jan 15.

Reason

I got as far as just primer, then I traded it. All the.parts I had to fella ed didn't have dents or rust. All I had to so was fix the.plastic bumper and sand it down. I would do a 2 stage if I were to do it again.

chuckthefuk

Ounces? No. However you should need about half a gallon before mixing. But most paint shops only sell it by the gallon. So you should have about half when your done, but its nice to have extra incase you gotta replace a fender you have the exact color. I'm painting the wheels now.

nice work man.

your welds look awful cold on that light bar, what kind of machine do you have? a 110v MIG I'm guessing? Crank that guy up a notch or two (if you can) and you'll get much better welds (looks and strength)

keep up the good work! I love to see people with ambition.

Post 888! woohoo!

lord flashheart
01-12-2011, 06:54 PM
Thanks. And yeah. The welds arnt pretty but they got good penetration and are strong. The welder has a few setting but if I go up all the way it burns holes in the steel. Trust me they are very strong.

Reason
01-12-2011, 09:29 PM
You know you should just grind down the welds. It will look a he'll of a lot better. If you have proper penetration and it wont compromise safety you can smooth it down nice. We do this to stair case rails and what not, on this bar it wont be an issue.

lord flashheart
01-13-2011, 01:01 AM
Yeah I started on it but my grinder needs a new blade. And the welds don't bother me cuz they are completely hidden by the grill and lights. If I make one for someone else I would grind them down.

Sorry I've been slacking on updates.. I've been busy with a personal shit storm..
Anyways. The outback is killing the budget for this car :(
So rather than buying a strut tower bar.... I made one.
I got some 16 gauge sheet steel, a 3/4" pipe, some bolts that didn't have threads til about an inch below the head, and about 2 inches of rubber hose.
(the rubber hose fits snug inside the pipe and snug over the non threaded part of the bolt, so I could use it as a bushing) any ways.it took me about 5 hours and a few modifications to the original design be for it was sturdy enough to satisfy me. I am truly impressed with amount the it helped the car. I wasn't to sure about it at first but it makes a world of difference.

I'll be installing the turbo a week from today.

Doesn't the block need to be lower compression when you boost it? Are you going to boost the 2.2 as is, and see how it holds? Seems like a bad way to treat an EJ22 :-?

But, I guess if you have blocks (and $$) to throw around. . .

Sounds like a fun project though!

running into problems..
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2011/03/IMAG0243-1.jpg

the intercooler doesnt fit the motor (even tho i was told thats the intercooler that came on it)
due to the BOV hits the IAVC (idle air control valve) :unamused: so now i was tinkering and i have 3 options...
1. exchange the intercooler for the correct one. (would take 3+ weeks)
2. i try to use the EJ22 intake (not sure if the intake pipe will fit under the intake)
or....
3.im wondering if this (see pic below) is the Blow off valve that actually goes with the motor (Anyone know?), if so i can just
seal off the BOV thats on the intercooler until i can get a different intercooler.

what do you people think.

I would not seal off the bov even though you are old going to run 5lbs. It will act as a safety for overpressurization of the engine. Now I thought you guys use the Wrx intercoolers to turbo the ej20? I would have to see a pic of the difference.

Why not run an aftermarket BOV with different flange or why not just run FMIC :p So much extra room with a bit more log.

See, that's why I ditched my EJ20k intake manifold. The only thing "better" about it is the under-manifold turbo piping, and the coolant tank bolts on directly. With the 25D, you just need a 90* silicone hose to the turbo, and you're in business with your stock plastic intake plastic or aftermarket silicone ones.

What I did: EJ25D intake manifold, EJ22T throttlebody, IACV and TPS. Everything is on the opposite side, so there aren't any clearance issues with both my "slanty" 20g and 05 FXT TMICs. I used the 22T water pipe, so I had to grind down the lower bolt hole on the IM for the un-needed EGT crap since it comes in contact with the water temp sensor. Tried the ej20K water pipe - it fit with no cutting (water temp sensors are on the opposite side of the 22t). Just need to block off the egt port - I cut some sheetmetal and it worked. Your ej20k fuel rails swap over to the 25D IM as well.

About your 20K heads, pm me what you're looking to get. I have an extra set of 96 WRX 20g heads in good shape, if you need em.

For the BOV/BPV, you can use something like this:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2011/03/DSCF7601-1.jpg
I'm talking about the leftmost part, replaces that bov on your intercooler that's interfering with the IACV. I bought that one, minus the silly red BOV, to use my stock 22T one that looks similar to your plastic one.

i would still have a something to relieve pressure. idid a little research, i think the older jdm ej20 motors dont have the BOV/CBV on the intercooler, im 99.9% that this black thingy is a compressor bypass valve. and im pretty sure CBVs act in place of a BOV cuz the only difference (that i know of) is a CBV releases back to the intake before the turbo where as the BOV releases to the amosphere. im still reasearching but i think thats the case.

Yeah, with the ej22T (or EJ25D) throttle body & ej25D intake manifold, the TPS, IACV are on the passenger side. Cable throttle is on the driver side, much more convenient imo.

N/A IACV:

Here's a great resource I used, some of the stuff carries over to your motor as well.

I'm not sure what CBV stands for, but that is correct. There's no way that TMIC came with that intake manifold due to the 20k's idle air control valve sticking out in that spot, that's why I mentioned the 25d stuff above. You're going to have to decide which one you want to keep, the manifold or that TMIC. The old wrx & sti "slanty" tmic's would work with that manifold since the bpv stuff is on the bottom side hose that goes to the turbo.

^that's an STI one, WRX ones are black. Obviously it's an aftermarket hose, but the hard plastic oem one is routed the same way.

OK! sweet. ill PM you in a minute. so i have discovered some info. the EJ22e IACV IS the same as the EJ22T. (see pics) also, this intercooler wont work with my 22E intake period. because the intercooler cant fit between the firewall and the throttle body (see pics) SO! that means i can ether

A) get a EJ25D intake, forget the CBV that goes with the motor, use the CBV that is on the intercooler, and re-pipe the turbo.
or
B) plug the CBV/BOV port on the IC, use the EJ20K intake, with the black CBV that came with the 20K.

which intake will cause the least problems with in terms of VAC lines?

oh and CBV stands for compressor bypass valve.

mike-tracy
03-08-2011, 08:08 PM
See now you're getting into stuff that I know about, lol. The 06-07 WRX, and 04-06 Forester XT (maybe later years, not sure) will fit on your N/A intake manifold and keep the TMIC's "cbv". "Slanty" intercooler will clear on the N/A as well.

Look at the EJ22T IACV picture closely, the metal outlet is pointing UP, not straight out like your n/a one. I wonder if they unthread? if so then you could use the ej20k iacv metal hose on your 22e iacv. Otherwise, you could just buy some hoses and make it fit, but the "L" shaped piping is so much easier. The electrical plug is the same, though, n/a and 22t.

The reason you just can't use the 20k iacv (in the n/a location) is the electrical connectors are different. And I don't know enough about the electrical to tell you if you can repin your harness with the 20k plugs and it'd work, or if it sends a completely different signal than your ecu is expecting.

The vacuum lines are simple with the ej25D, I used this diagram:
http://www.surrealmirage.com/vrg3/vacuum/

I went with option A, it seemed easier at the time, especially after reading my buddy's build thread about fitment problems. He used a Forester EJ20G which is related to your 20k motor. http://bbs.legacycentral.org/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=40398
He did get it running eventually, and his car with a 9.0 CR motor, 4.44 tranny and a TD05-18g was a beast. Then blew it since the tune was for an 8-8.5 cr motor, lol.

With the right intercooler, you could keep your current setup as is. This would prob be your easiest or quickest option, so you don't have to customize or reroute things too much like option A.

oh man where do i begin
- you have a v5/6 TMIC which is wrong as youve obviously found out
- the black bypass valve is the correct one for your engine. you need this intercooler: http://kepfeltoltes.hu/091217/STI_TMIC- ... es.hu_.jpg (http://kepfeltoltes.hu/091217/STI_TMIC-2_www.kepfeltoltes.hu_.jpg) (notice the built-in elbow)
- the ej20k STi heads are some of the best heads ever. they are made for factory 7900 redline and 8250 fuel cut. shim under bucket. very good valvetrain etc
- i dont know why you dont just use all the EJ20K stuff in its complete form and rebuild the shortblock or swap in another. the engine you have is so awesome and youre cannibalizing it just to do a franken-turbo setup. unless the EJ20K you bought doesnt have wiring/ecu, then i can see how it would be kinda difficult. still, the heads are where its at... you should definitely use them if you can
- that Ej20 block is toast. it must be a broken rod if the piston is rotated at all.

- image sequence was neat, i made you a gif for fun

Bj. You should get it. It's a sick car. Sorry I didn't text back yesterday. I'm out in dugway and service is spotty at best.

Elislider. Yeah I am working a deal out for the correct intercooler.
At the time I wasn't sure which bypass was correct cuz it came with to, one on the intercooler and one kinda attached to the intake.
The reason I'm not doing a full swap is
I only had about a grand to do this and the motor was $430 with no ecu or wiring.
I know the heads are awesome. If I had a Wrx I would keep them. This seems to be the best option for the money. Especially because I'm trying to keep my compression ratio. If I change the heads it drops my compression and I loose my low end. And if I run a lot of power then I have to change the trans to handle the power. And plus all the wiring head aches.
The 2.2 is dime a dozen here so its not the end of the world if I kill it.
My tuner has a 2.2 that he is running like 8 lbs on and its fast enough for now.
And thanks that gif is cool.

elislider
03-18-2011, 09:53 PM
ah yeah the black plastic BPV is the stock EJ20K one that dumps back to the intake. the one that came on the TMIC you got also dumps back to the intake, it just routes differently (more like USDM wrx)

if you dont have the wiring or ECU then yeah it would be hard to do a full swap

dude, that thing must be sick! i am way excited for this. i will admit i got a little sick and tired of working on cars here for a while but i blame that on my stupid water pump. i can't wait to see this engine in person, and help. anyway i got the legacy, my parents think it is a peice of junk but they dont know what it can become. its pretty quick, you'll see it monday.

I agree Elislider and thanks for the info.

Thanks bj. Yeah I think it was a defective pump, did that guy get it taken care of?
I'm so stoked for you man! Probably a little quicker than your tired old 2.2 in the wagon ;)
And your parents know nothing about cars. If I recall your parents thought all your cars (ranger, pathfinder, the legacy, etc.) Were pieces of junk.
Yet you dad was the one who bought that stupid Isuzu trooper..... and the jeep wagoneer.... And the PT cruiser. Anyways I'm on my way home now. And. will be home around 5 or 6 so I drive by and see it. But you'll have to call me after work tomorrow so we can chill.
I have been thinking a water to air but they all seem spendy if I can find a cheap one I will. I found a company that makes TONs of fmic kits and tmics for cheap. I think its cxracing.com

Just a thought, as I think of ways to bump up my EJ22's output..

I've been planning on coming up this afternoon, but this morning my kid's cough (now 6 days going) got a little worse (croupy, yuck).
I canceled the day care/sitter for today (i was going to come up around noon, but now not till wife's off work at 5)...
So now i'm planning to leave moab around 5-6...

some time down the road (when i get an income) i might be interested in doing the 2.0 head swap on my 22, to see if i get a higher compression 2.2 awesome!

Ok today I got the last 4 of the 10 boxes in the mail. So now I have 95% of the parts I need to put it together but I was talking to my boss and he has been pressuring me to go all out with 625cc injectors, lower the compression with the same heads we use on or 464hp sandrail engines. I'm not going to bother telling which heads cuz half the people on this forum don't believe the shit I say. so the engine that is going in is just a temporary thing till I build my other engine.

running into problems..
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2011/03/IMAG0243-1.jpg

the intercooler doesnt fit the motor (even tho i was told thats the intercooler that came on it)
due to the BOV hits the IAVC (idle air control valve) :unamused: so now i was tinkering and i have 3 options...
1. exchange the intercooler for the correct one. (would take 3+ weeks)
2. i try to use the EJ22 intake (not sure if the intake pipe will fit under the intake)
or....
3.im wondering if this (see pic below) is the Blow off valve that actually goes with the motor (Anyone know?), if so i can just
seal off the BOV thats on the intercooler until i can get a different intercooler.

what do you people think.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2011/03/IMAG0244-1.jpg
actually the intercooler in picture is from a version 6 STI and the intake manifold are from the version 3. as you can see the version 6 has the metal blow off valve on the intercooler and the version 3 has a divorced plastic blow off that routes back on the right side of the motor, this goes with the jdm foresters too

Anyways progress has been kinda slow in the car. But I got the diff matched, transmission bolted in, clutch pedals in, etc.
Basically the car is ready to receive the engine.
however, now that I got a job at metric motors, and have income. Plus I now have a full machine shop, mechanic shop at my disposal, and I get cost on JDM STi engines, I may scrap the 2.2 turbo idea. And get a EJ20k/ej20g and swap it in.
I may also drop the EJ22E-T in, for the summer then in the fall (when my bank account recovers from this project) ill do the swap.

04-23-2011, 02:49 AM
so whats the final engine setup?

lord flashheart
04-23-2011, 11:06 AM
well, its a EJ22E block, i was going to upgrade to eagle rods and wiseco pistons but got lazy. so stock internals
then the heads are EJ25D hydraulic. which i rebuilt 100%, are essentially new heads.
i used the EJ25D hydraulic heads for a couple reasons
1) the cam lobe on N/A engines are bigger than on turbo cars.
because turbo cars have the boost to push air in so you dont
need a huge lobe.
2) EJ25D heads are super cheap and easy to come by.
3) The combustion chamber is only slightly bigger than the Stock EJ22 heads.
this put my compression ratio right where i wanted it. roughly 8.7:1. (static)
4) the EJ25D heads actually flow as good as a set of STi heads. (but they are limited on power)
5) the EJ25D hydraulic heads have a oil galley plug (for the buckets), that i can tap into for the turbo feed.
(this opens up some space were i originally had the oil line) which was the biggest problem i have run into durring this build lol.

polished and engraved valve covers, aluminum low profile oil filler, powder coated fuel rails, new timing belt and all that crap.

the intake manifold is a ej25 manifold, that i made some modifications to, i.e welded off the IACV (fitment issues)
i also eliminated the EGR crap.

if we get time this week we might dyno it but, their is a EG33 twin turbo sitting on our dyno, so if the engine is done and the EG33 is still on the dyno ill just put it in the car, if the dyno is open ill dyno it. if i do i want to make 260-300HP which is a LOT, at this altitude and considering our dyno is VERY VERY conservative. most STis' only make about 220 at this altitude.

well, not quite. v3/4 are nearly identical in every way, the STi has a different turbo between the years (v3 = vf23, v4 = vf24) and i think a slightly different ECU tune, but basically identical. the v5/6 are also nearly identical to each other but different than v3/4

wow  i didnt know the vf24 was used on any STI model thanks. coz i have a friend with a 97 v3 GF8 wagon with a vf23 and another with a v4 GF8 wagon with a vf28....all unmodified, and the v3 is way faster and more aggressive which to my knowledge comes from the more aggressive heads and better factory tune. so basically the v3 heads should be a good catch. :smt023

elislider
04-27-2011, 06:41 PM
all the v3-6 STi heads (ej20k and ej207 sti) are way better than the regular v1-6 WRX versions (ej20g, ej205, ej20k/7 non-sti). they have an 8250ish-rpm factory fuel cut, if that says anything.

the VF28 came on the v5/6 STi. about the same as vf23. it sounds like maybe the v4 GF8 wagon was a regular WRX with a turbo upgrade and the v3 GF8 was an STi. I did a v3 STI swap from a MY97 JDM wagon (v-limited :) ) and it was definitely a great engine. running stock it was pretty quick :) theres lots of bolt-on upgrades available, but the tuning options on JDM engines are kinda slim, or they cost a lot. theres definitely no AccessPort for a EJ20K !

Leak down was great, compression is great.
How ever between the addition of a turbo, and a hydraulic liters the oil pressure was only at about 22lbs. Which is a little low. So that means the STi oil pump is going on.

well, theres the VF40. and then theres the VF40. :)
to be honest without a tune on the outback you should really only replace it with another VF40. but if you were going to get a tune then you could go with pretty much any VF turbo with the 2-bolt flange (at the compressor -> TMIC) like an 08+ WRX. you can usually find used VF40's for $300-400. ive even seen a few brand new ones sold for around $600 (new from dealer they are $1200 retail, $950 discount)

lord flashheart
05-13-2011, 09:32 PM
Well I think it had been damaged from the whole rod bearing thing. The vf40 is not super reliable.
I'm actually down 3 cars. I also have a S10.

Yes. I am aware that I would need a tune for a diff turbo. And I know the VF40 has a flange to the intercooler. The reason I was asking is I would like to know specific numbers. I.e. VF52 etc. I'm considering the BNR supercars VF40 upgrade. I've also herd there is a Eco turbo and a garret that will work. But like I said I need model names.

Zac

I asked him about it and he told me there was no jdm dual range ever married to an EJ series to his knowledge.
Is it a Austrailian thing?

i hadnt ever heard of that for an EJ but apparently Australia and maybe other places did get a dual-range on the forester (maybe other models?)

they're naturally aspirated JDM, mostly behind EJ20s
It is aussie yes but also JDM, europe, new zealand, latin america and the middle east... pretty much everywhere but north america :smt011

here's a pic of a JDM one on Canada:

yeah but since the birth of EJs, 89 there (90 here), they've always had and still have dual range full time AWD, not just the part time 4WD like the older GLs, etc.

Thanks man. They are the shops. But after hours is 'hobby shop time' as my boss calls it.

Most of the issues have been resolved. Although I think it has a boost leak, a bad radiator cap, and a slight miss fire.

Your probably a good person to ask Elislider, what would cause a car to cut out at WOT but not 95% throttle? Amount of goost is Irrelitive. Does it at 4lbs, and does it at 7lbs.

Could it be the TPS? maybe it is defective so it reads normal up to WOT. Then instead of reading WOT it reads fully closed. You need to hook a scanner up to it and see what is happening and what all the sensors are reading when it dies.

then :smt011 to the stuff falling apart down the road.

hmm tps.. interesting. i may scope it and see.

"final" (for now...) is a EJ22E w/ 96 EJ25D hydraulic DOHC heads. that puts the estimated static compression ratio to 8.5 to 1. (ive had a hard time nailing down the exact CR because the 1996 EJ25D heads are different from the 1997 and up EJ25D. the 96 is a hydraulic lifter, with a "oval" roof shaped combustion chamber. the 1997-1999 heads were mechanical, and had a clover shaped combustion chamber. so.... the exact combustion chamber volume is hard to pin point because no one specifies if they are hydraulic or mechanical.
the turbo is a VF10 (for fitment issues)
im running about 8-9lbs. but because of the boost leak i turned it down to about 5-6lbs

the future mods are as follows, (in order that they are 'likely' to get done)
forester XT intercooler
06 LGT front brakes
Outback H6 rear brakes
JDM STi 5Spd trans
Stinger EMS
850cc fuel injectors
VF22
Ej257 shortblock,
EJ25D mechanical heads, CNC shrouded valves (flow bench tested to be more effective than a port n polish), knife edge, gasket matching and brian crowley valves, retainers, cams etc.

TPS is probably most likely, either its going bad or it needs to be recalibrated. unfortunately they are pretty difficult to calibrate so you basically have to replace it. anything else would be more random. like it could be MAF... or fuel pump (but probably not). basically anything that the ECU tells to do more at WOT. could be an open/closed loop thing, but also probably not that.

my instinct wants to say that because you have a oddly frankenstein-ed build, it could be some weird thing that will be really hard to trace

Interesting. I'm still working out the bugs, and I am going to play with injectors to see if I can get more boost

good project, nice compilation (of thread an parts)!

So what are you at and what are you thinking RE: compression and boost?

Are you stock 9:1 comp and (if I remember without re-reading..) are you at 7-8 lbs boost, but thining more and bigger injectors?

inquiring minds want to know ;)

lord flashheart
07-21-2011, 09:31 AM
more or less, i dont know what the compression ratio is, but to the best of my knowledge it is about 8.5:1 to about 8.7:1 i believe.
i am planning on playing with a couple different things
im going to play with E85 conversion kit for more power.
360 injectors. i think the computer might be able to trim it out, at an idle, but when under boost the injectors should keep up with 9 to 10 lbs. i wont mention names but, someone who has a legacy turbo, was saying "well u can run 12lbs on the 360cc injectors and u should be able to run 9 lbs on the stock 280cc injectors" well there is a problem with so-and-sos theory is volume vs. pressure. on the stock ej22 Sohc that would be true. however, i have knife edged, gasket matched, valve shrouded EJ25D heads. i.e i have higher volume, going into my engine so i dont need pressure.

for example, if a two inch pipe flows 5 gallons a minute, a one inch pipe would need to be twice the pressure in order to flow the same amount.
(i know those numbers are not realistic. but the princapal stands)
same goes for air flow to engines.
