Fuel senders (both) or fuel pump... if you are going in there to replace either or you should just do it all one shot.
ok, this sounds like what i will do. another thing i was thinking was dirty fuel, i just filled up the other day. i always look out for the gas trucks filling up the station, i heard the stir up the sediment at the bottom, but the could have been there b4 i got there. but thats another thing i can check when i pull out the pump and senders, i have the ones from my old GT still so i'm glad for that at least.

prodriver1
09-18-2012, 04:01 PM
now it will start but if it gets and gas it will shudder and die, deffinitly has something to do with the p0440 egr code, i replaced the egr with a goodish one off my GT, what could cause a car to eat through egr valves so fast?

prodriver1

fixed the pump (replaced with old GT unit, it had less rust too :smt023 )but im still getting p0440.

test drove another outback like mine only green, guy wanted $2800 for rusted, dented, both bumpers busted beyond repair, broken windshield, bad trans, bad engine with multiple codes, blowing exhaust, interior a wreck with busted switches and trim all over, mismatched tyres on scratched and oxidized rims, ripped seats..... I test drove it and then offered him a ride in mine, then told him I payed $500 for it and I'd give him $800 for his  .
^ got a call from this guy, he still hasnt sold his mistreated suby, he told me when the last guy test drive it it died and he had to get it towed home and was wondering if i could look at it. well i took a look, when the test driver was checking the engine bay he must have looked at the air filter cuz one of the vacuum lines on the intake tube came off, just popped it back on and she started rite up. the guy looked frazzled as he just shelled out $50 for a tow. he then wanted to know if i would pay $1800 for it... :smt011 i pointed to my not so crappy subaru and left

i have a puddle of bright green coolant on top of the block on the pass side between the block and the head. low coolant more "oil" than i put in (smells like coolant) and the exhaust smells like burning coolant... :smt010 :smt009 :smt010 :smt009 . oh well, time to rebuild one of the bottom ends i have, any ideas on new heads? i need a set, should i upgrade somehow? lordflasheart, any ideas?

MonstarMotorsports
10-22-2012, 08:30 PM
personally i'd highly suggest not welding it. Even the best welded diffs are going to grenade. Then your not only stuck, but you cant even get towed out and drive away.
better off picking up a cheap vicious diff. legacys, foresters, wrxs, stis, they all come with them, so finding your right gear ratio shouldnt be to hard.

Driving with a locked diff sucks too. specially in snow.

grayguy
10-22-2012, 08:55 PM
Find an automatic WRX rear diff, it's 4.11 like your 5spd and bolts right in. That's what's in my car.

word? i didnt think they would be that cheap :smt023 yards around here dont have many subarus with LSD's, a couple first gen foresters (most are autos) a bunch of 2.2 leg wagons, some outbacks, no wrx's no STi's no imprezas :(, i know the 00'-04' gt's and outbacks have them but most subarus in my town still work so...

oh ya!!!!!!!!!!!!!! sorry i did switch phones! I lost mine on that trip i met you on... wow that was a long time ago. . I dont have plans go go down there anytime soon though, but it would probably be cheaper and funner to get it myself. I love the shitties :smt023 . i'll talk to the misses and see if i can make it work with our schedule (kids and all).

MonstarMotorsports
10-23-2012, 02:47 PM
Nice thing about upull it, is they dont give a shit if its LSD or a busted rear diff out of a hyundai. Its all the same price. Cheap. lol. You'll never find a wrx in one of those yards, but if you can scout one out of a forester or leg GT that will work for you, should be less than 50 bucks. i think i paid $38 for my last one?

I know i sold my last 04 wrx diff for $50 bucks.

Finding it from a personal guy on craigslist how ever, might be looking more in the $100 range. $200 if he's a d-bag that thinks a 02 wrx diff is worth a ton of money because it says wrx lol. But they aren't as expensive as you might think, just hunt around

BAAAD idea for a DD :smt011

Find a VLSD (pretty available, or if you look and $$$pend you can find a CLSD from an RX and plug that in (like me :). . .

(I've been away for a few months, sorry to repeat...I didn't read the whole thread ;)
point is the same, get you a VLSD 4.11 and it'll be easy to find! :smt031

wtf? why is my temp sensor leaking oil?

prodriver1
12-20-2012, 03:50 PM
i took it off this morning and resealed the two pieces that make up the sensor, i also thread locked it into place on the block, and it still leaks really bad.

wentz912
01-01-2013, 11:09 PM
It leaks oil because that's the sensor for the low oil idiot light, not the coolant temperature. Both coolant temp sensors (ecu and gauge) are on the coolant crossover, underneath the intake manifold.

Also, are you certain it's the sensor leaking and not something nearby leaking bad enough to throw oil to the area?

positive its the culprit. i took off the alt and pulled the sensor out cleaned the whole area really well and put it back together, when i started the car i went back to look and listen and it was leaking oil already, it squirts out around the little metal tab that sticks out the top for the wire to clip on.

^ cheap-o autozone ones leak all the time. I know at O'Reilly auto if you still have the receipt you can bring it back in for a free new one. Lifetime warranty. I've replaced mine once or twice now in the past few years. Pretty much any cheap-o auto store one will probably leak though.

i assume your talking about this...
http://www.autometer.com/article/bodyImages/96.jpg

thats not a coolant temp sensor

thats oil pressure sensor. the ONLY sensor that connect directly to the block is the oil pressure (the crank sensor technically bolts to the oil pump). right between the alternator and the power steering pump. the threads are tapered so it should seal without silicone, but RTV should still be used. subaru also used a aluminum crush washer on the adapter (the lower peice of the sensor).

coolant temp sensor is on the water cross over under the manifold.

like so..

yes sir thats it (tho its hard to tell, your engine is just to clean for me to reference lol) the only spot on it that leaks is the tiny metal tab that sticks out the top, the threads are leak free. i'll just go to subaru and get a new one, shipping is a hassle.
and if i may say, your knowledge of subarus has helped me many times now, you sir are AWESOME :smt023

Hey guys...I have a question about a couple sensors also mainly I don't know what they do...the are emissions sensors that as located and bolted to the intake manifold..the one on the egr side has a cylinder looking piece on it with two barbs maybe three cant remember exactly, and the other one is bolted underneath the intake runner close to the hard fuel lines, it has two barbs.

I have almost finished my motor replacement and have lost track of where my vacuum lines go. The one y's off from the purge solenoid I think. Need help or possibly a vacuum diagram that isn't so vague like the one stuck to the hood of my car.

Oh,and its a 95 legacy intake manifold and sensors automatic transmission with egr deleted : ) that would probably help a little.

currently installing a subtle solutions 1" lift kit (half time) and wow am i having to fight the subaru all the way. i snapped the bottom bolt on the driver rear shock, ya the one thats really hard to deal with due to the axle being in the way of anything other than a wrench. and it was the bolt head on the "front of car" side so i had to deal with the problem from the "rear of the car" side which meant taking of the axle which did not go according to plan either, i could not get it to slip out! i had to undo the whole knuckle and used the axle nut and 32mm socket and pounded until i could get a pry bar in the back and alternate hammer hits and prying, it was fighting the whole way, every last mm the MF! the pass side needed a 2' long pipe and ol'torquey to get the bottom bolts for the shock, but the bolts didn't brake on that side so thats good. well i'm off to o'really :smt017 to rent some spring compressors as mine seem to have found a higher paying job elsewhere... and i can screw the rears back together and start the fronts. Hope it goes better with the fronts. :-?

Disconnect the endlink on the sway bar. Also push the rotor down with your foot as you wiggle the strut/spring into place

prodriver1
03-17-2013, 10:03 PM
it took the rotor off. it was just me, the knuckle, and strut, in a mexican stand off. here is what had to happen. I disconnected everything but the bottom bolt (the really long one that connects the two lateral links on either side) i just loosened that one so the knuckle could come forward. i also had to push the e-brake cable down and out of the ring on the control arm that keeps it in place, but like i said i unbolted all other connections with the knuckle axle, caliper&rotor, control arm, end links, the lot. then it was equally as difficult to get it all back together. the shock was jacked up with the stock subaru jack, the knuckle was jacked up with the floor jack a little to meet it roughly, it still took all my strength and all my pry bars to get them to meet up, i even used a screw driver to align up the bolt holes on the shock to the knuckle and pounded a bolt at a time into place with all that tension it two jacks. then it was a couple more jack moves, LOL, to get the control arm lined up for a bolt and the swaybar endlinks too. that combined with a thousand other newb mistakes i made like forgetting which tophat came from which side :smt011 it was a frustrating 2 days, but the fronts went on so fast i didnt even have to switch cd's in the sterio :smt023 and a test drive to the co-op was smooth and very lifted lol. i'm going to measure ground to wheel arch tomorrow and see whats what.

measure hub to wheel arch too, as well as rear diff to ground and front cat to ground.
the wheel arch to ground will change it/when you get oversized tires  But the hub to wheel arch whill measure your total lift (if you also did it when stock to compare ;)

Props for seeing through and make sure all your junk is torqued to spec! :smt023

shafted!
OB strut shafts (front) are about 5" from the top of the mounting flange to the bottom of the lower spring perch collar. Legacy, brighton, GT, etc will be about 3.5"ish.
I'm not sure, but the springs (if you got those) may be a little stiffer rate than legacy or OB (which as far as I can tell or have found, are the same (OB-legacy)).

time for a front wheel bearing replacement. I have been doing some research on this and it seems to be beyond my means, I dont have a big press or anything to get the old bearing out and the new one in. can i do this with a simple tool i can get at harbor freight or something? I can get the knuckle off the car and back on i have done that a bunch of times on lots of subarus but i have never done the bearing. i have watched a couple youtube vids on the job and none of them use regular garage tools, is it possible for me without a press?

No.
You'll need a press and some appropriate rings, old races, etc. etc. to propperly fit the bearings and press them out evenly. Presses are scary with LOTS of forece and tension in them, a little off and bad things can happen.

you will save a lot of money if you have a press and appropriate tools available to you, but without them I'm confident in saying it is NOT a job to half-ass and try to rig w/o appropriate tools.

When I priced a front end job (both half shafts, both front bearings, both inner and outer tie rods and a lower ball joint from 3 different stealerships, i got 3 different price quotes; that said they all said subaru doesn't sell bearings but sells bearings installed in knuckles. If you get knuckles from a dealership THAT is a non-speciality tool job, but also LOT$ more moolah. The money you'd save getting bearings will not buy you a press, or the experience needed to use or know how best to use it...

Its a tight spot, but worth exploring use of a school's shop, finding a friend that's a mechanic or someone in school that can press out the old and press in the new for you. Follow instructions appropriately. If not done in the right order, you'll ruin your new bearings (I did that on one of mine...)

I know probably not what you wanted to hear, but its a validly critical job to do with the right tools.

well I'm not a half-assed noob lol, i work on lots of subarus and have done everything up to an engine swap, clutch job, tore down many subaru parts cars, blah blah blah, so i'm not doubting my skills to do a good job, i do know how the job goes start to finish with a bearing job, i've just never done it myself and was wondering if i could use a simple tool like one of those claw looking bearing pullers instead of a big arse machine i could never afford.

No worries dude. I'm not bagging on you bro, just don't want you to go down a road of no return.
I'm probably in about the same-ish boat experience and comfort wise as you (although on my big jobs, I've had a friend with lots of car wrenching experiences (not on soobs, but overall) looking over my shoulder).

My buddy has a fairly well equipped shop with tools and tricks-of-the-trade on hand thus making my engine and trans pulls (clutch and transmission swaps) much more manageable (when compared to my first strut-swap lift with all hand tools ;)
He has a press which allowed for the bearing job, but it was still slightly terrifying thus I would humbly advise against trying to use simple tools. Like hammer and old bearing races would not give you the accuracy of 'pressing' out evenly along the same plane. It would be easy as hell to get pushing crooked. :smt012

I hope you can get hooked up with a press though. Doing bearings with my front end was a great experience to add to my Subaru resume :smt005
I wish you the same :smt020

I'm looking up replacing an Engine Coolant Temp sensor and came across this thread then thought og you...

key excerpt, "I brought the knuckle to a local gas station where they pressed in a new bearing for $84.00. The new bearing cost was about $45.00 and was purchased from buyautoparts.com."

If you can get JUST bearings from a dealer, that's the way to go, otherwise I recommend Car Quest (got mine there) or NAPA for any parts...
Years ago I was a pep boys/auto zone/checker shopper (cheap-ass college student), since then I've learned about the variety in quality of aftermarket parts, I've switched to the quality parts stores. Sure the part cost a scosh more, but its better and you don't have to re-replace it ;)

keep on keepin' on! :smt023

its funny, I'm still timid when thinking about some car jobs, but with my buddy pushing me along I'll go for it vicariously off his confidence.
With my first clutch (which was conveniently a transmission swap). . . . with the transmission out on the ground, I was concerned the car would never run again
:smt005

Since then another transmission swap and engine pull with minor reseal, plus timing (which Gary did) and a few strut swaps in the mix and I guess I've had some stuff out and in in the car.

Funny how it all adds up though. Next thing you know you'll have gotten into an engine, watched a turbo swap, or opened a transmission to "ooo" and "aah" at the magic inside!

northern MN has an area of small mining towns called the range, lots of deer but no antelope, and the deer are NOT playing or having any fun rite now as its deer hunting season, LOL. but lots and lots of offroading, trails, old mine pits and the Pièce de résistance, a huge offroading park! I will make vids next spring of the outback dominating the trucks :D)))) Oh and the best part, the cops are awesome, they are totally cool and dont give anyone a hard time about anything, the only thing they care about is community and service to the citizens they work for, i have never experienced anything like it, pull off a 4wheeler trail onto the hwy you get a thumbs up and a smile, from stoplight to 70mph as fast as the outback will go rite next to a cop, no problem, rev the suby for the kids and the cops smile, they wave as they drive by you instead of staring you down, the kids can sk8 anywhere they want and cops just smile and wave. its so refreshing to deal with cool cops:)

Thing about the forester parts is that the rear struts are shorter, but the springs are longer, rear still sags on a wagon though. My sedan sat with a bit of forward rake with outback struts and Gen 1 forester springs.

ya the shocks were a big disappointment, but the springs seemed to be softer as well, they are taller i can see that when i stand them next to the outback springs, but the coils seem to be smaller and softer sprung. I probably got a old worn out set of forester takeoffs so it was a bad example, especially compared to my nice stiff KYB's.

You're right on the springs, gen1 forester do have a lower spring rate than legacy/outback. Gen 2 however are stiffer, if you could find them for a decent price I'd say you'd like them much better.

gen 2 forester lift on your gen 1 OB? or gen 1 forester lift in your OB

I know gen 2 will lift and OB, but I'd bet gen 1 wouldn't, maybe lower..... I know the gen 1 forester springs are taller than OB springs, but they're also for a lighter car AAAND the lower spring perch is lower than that of a gen 1 OB strut.....

BUT it was SOFT? Hmm, that's good to hear.

copy that. My BD sedan has forester springs in OB struts inthe rea and the springs lift about .5" (settled) over the OB springs did, but I have SVX springs in front so no rake, if anything the rear is a scosh LOWER than the front (SVX springs are thick, burly and tall!).

Yeah I've wondered about that. I've never had gen 2 foz springs in hand but have wondered about different fitments, like a mellower lift of gen gen 2 FOR struts with legacy or gen 1 OB springs, hell even impreza springs... to get bigger tires but not too high to worry about the drive line lowering stuff..
Or gen 1 OB struts with gen 2 FOR springs to get lift for tires AND taller from springs... like a cheaper way of a king spring lift... you know, higher spring rate and lift from factory parts instead of king spring cost... I know it wouldn't be the same rate or lift increase (even the OEM kings lift), but $ for $ it might be a better option.

Yeah 1st gen FOZ allow smaller tires than 1st gen OB struts (this comes from trying to ift factory low rigs ;)
BUT 2nd gen forester struts [and springs and tophats] will lift a 1st gen OB. http://www.subaruoutback.org/forums/81-wheels-tires-brakes-suspension/17450-using-forester-springs-struts-shocks-lift-1st-gen-outbacks.html

Damn it, you two, for making me start thinking about lift again! I just met a guy a couple weeks ago at our local meet who put WRX struts/springs on his '04 Forester(Gen2). This is supposed to be the simpliest lift option. So I might have to ask him about his takeoffs! 11.5" FROM GROUND TO DIFF!!!!! SUBARU OFFROAD MENACE! :smt028 :smt029 :smt027 :smt023 :smt007

So just spacers in an outback?
That's surprisingly high at the diff, awesomely high!! :smt023
Put gen 2 forester struts in there to lift an OB PLUS spacers!!

it'll be kind of like the ratio of my car to a stock legacy as that lift is to a stock OB. . . :smt025
here's mine (diff protector takes about a half inch of clearance to the diff itself)..
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/11/P1030258JPG-1.jpg

just sayin' lifting awesomeness is awesome awesomeness!!
Just for comparison, I measured my rear axle, with my stock Outback suspension and tires. 8" to the bottom and 9" to the center of the drain plug!
Damn it, you two, for making me start thinking about lift again! I just met a guy a couple weeks ago at our local meet who put WRX struts/springs on his '04 Forester(Gen2). This is supposed to be the simpliest lift option. So I might have to ask him about his takeoffs! I need to figure out whats up with the steering, something is leaking and take care of the tierod ends. I wonder if a Uni Ball conversion would be worth the added cost?!

Mwah hah hah! Exactly my point!! heh heh heh :smt026

I love the constitution but the government doesnt thats why i hate them, and they want to take my guns and thats just not ok with me, they are trying to poison me and everyone else with nasty chemicals in food and water, and turn my fellow americans against each other through fear so we dont band together and see what they are doing, all the while anyone who drinks tap water is getting large dosses of prozac so they dont care about any of it. INFOWARS.COM!!!!!!

That's definitely one way of summarizing it! :smt025

been doing a little work on the suby lately. it has been throwing codes for a while p0301 and 302 (misfires) along with a knock sensor code and the usual p0141 (i dont have a cat) so i got a knock sensor (2.2 was the only one in stock so i got that, same thing as 2.5 KS) that fixed the misfires and the hesitation of the line. now the only code is p0141 the 2nd o2 sensor which is not on the car right now, i have full custom exhaust on it and the sensor popped out from the rusty crap welds so i unplugged it. it has been this way for a few months now.
a day after the new KS was installed (ran fine the first day) i am getting more hesitation than b4 and power loss all through the powerband and it studders when driving at consistent speed like holding it at 60 it will jump and studder a couple times then b normal. i am not throwing any codes other than the p0141 code for the 2nd o2 sensor. what could this be?

So you're just driving around with a unplugged 02 sensor?

So you still have the upstream one or are you COMPLETELY without a 02 sensor anywhere?

she's all good, only thing wrong now is THE TRANS IS FAILING! oh well, I'm going to get a WRX and lift it as high as i can with my outback suspension and subtle solutions lift kit and big ass mud tyres:) that should piss off the ricers sufficiently :smt005 HAHA! I havent seen a really lifted WRX just a small 1'' lift, so I think I will be the first:) so I guess I'll be parting out the offroadaru a little, most of it I will need for the liftings, not that anyone will be interested in anything off that rusty beast

If you needed an Outback auto, I have one you could have for like $50, but it's a bit of a drive. It's in my way... LOL

You would like it over here in the NW, we off road anything.

Just a couple guys from WCSS 2013... No one cares what you do over here, we all get along. :smt023

My friend has a lifted WRX on Forester Struts and springs with strut spacers. I think its lifted 3 and 1/2 inches over stock. I don't have any pics of it lifted though. He runs 17 inch Drag wheels and I am not sure what size tire he runs. Its a good bit bigger than stock size though. All the pics I have are from when he bought it. It was slammed on coilovers.

fuuuuuck ya! thats a good time. I get a little cynical due to the h8rs around here, the subaru isnt allowed to play any reindeer games so when she gets stuck i'm on my own till my wifes XC70 comes to the rescue (the volvo doesnt like getting dirty  ) I'm just getting a rebuilt trans and keeping my car, going to get a little more crazy with it tho, my cousin is going to make me tube bumpers for cheap and im fabing some skid plates out of road signs and sheet metal:) going all out zombie apocalypse/ road warrior on it;)

GOOD! just got internet back, living in the country is hard lol. I have been super super busy with the volvo of late so not much time or $ for the subaru. the volvo has gotten a HD turbo solenoid, throttle body spacer, K&N intake, hawk pads, IPD turbo inlet and intercooler piping, IPD engine mount, IPD trans mount, new fuel pump, new fuel filter, new FPR, trans flush, she's running castrol edge per volvo forum recommendations, its hot stuff, the one and only WRX up here got its ass handed to it by the 2 ton black beast! I dont really know how to feel about that being a subaru guy  we are thinking of upgrading to a 19T turbo and IPD software but that will come after the volvo R brake upgrade and IPD swaybar kit and bilstein shocks, shes a big girl and needs more help b4 more power can be added, its fast enough as it is.

the time has come, I am going down south to get a rust free outback and I'm starting over, this MN car is just too rust to keep going and I just can't go without an outback in my life, I have spent the last 2 months trying to find a new car, I'm getting older now and its time for a new ride, the offroadaru has many issues now. I talked to my bank and they cleared me for a lot more $ than I ever thought i could get so I thought to myself STi time or that volvo V70R 6spd I have always wanted or a nice cozy legacy spec-B, but the huge reliability factor of my trusty old outback just cant be ignored, I have had many outbacks in my life and they have all served me without fail even when they fail. I have had many number of things go wrong or break in my subarus but they always make it home, "no crank pully, belts, or oil? no problem, I'll get you home" ohh trusty subaru... so I am getting the best rust free low miles example I can find and going even crazier with it :)

I couldn't say goodbye, the offroadaru lives on! I have completely removed the swaybars, wheel well liners, bumpers, A/C system, and part of the intake that runs through the fender and made a snorkel that goes up the A pillar, then the front fenders got rolled up and pulled out to look like a rally truck, I'll be fabbing skid plates soon, the rear wheel arch has gotten the trim and rubber removed and pounded up to make more room, I'm getting wheel spacers and getting bigger tyres than the 27" already on there. the only thing that will cost $ are the tyres so this will be fun! forgive the no pics yet but i am exhausted after swapping 2 engines and a multitude of other parts between 2 subarus all by myself in 1 day and 3 afternoons. cheers.

Just a wee bit rich eh? Your tire low or do you just run it that low for offroading?

prodriver1
10-14-2015, 03:26 PM
it has been sitting for a long time, I currently have 4 working cars and never use them, I live in a small town and just walk everywhere, my wife uses her volvo but refuses to exercise my cars lol so they just sit there, this one has been undriven for almost a year unfortunately, I use my black outback for trips, this one is all offroady and thats not very nice for hwy driving long distance and thats all I do other than walk, the grocery store is 1.5 hours away so we take the super cozy and luxurious volvo or if i'm going by myself I take my other outback that is much more civilized on the road as its stock with rallitech swaybars. I do run lower tyre pressure offroading but not that much, I dont have beadlocks so that would be too low. I have a K&N filter and fill straight through exhaust (no channels in the muffler plus 2.25" piping, borla rep's and 2 glass packs) so I spaced the O2 bung to make it run richer, better than it going lean due to the mods and blowing my engine.
