the new ride:) very excited to have another outback. this will be the 3rd one for me and the first white subaru. I was going to keep it stock for the wife and kids but they voted with me to mod the crap out of it (well sort of anyway). I got the car for a monkey ($500) from a lovely lady who thought it didn't work but a new battery and a push of the security override solved that. also some d-bag broke the rear window with a bb gun so that was an expensive proposition. So I traded a ford truck for a legacy parts car and had cheep glass and a tone of extra stuff the most handy of which was the snaps and screws that hold the trim together, now the interior is almost perfect. Also parted my rust free 98' legacy GT for this build.

MOD'S int:
blaupunkt door speakers front and rear
broad-view rear view mirror
new rear wiper motor x2
new random int and ext trim pieces
full size subaru spare

MOD'S ext:
rallitek light bar
16" snowflakes
27" mud tyres
new front and rear windows
NAPA offroad lights
rear hatch bullbar

MOD'S performance:
98' GT 2.5 swap
Brembo cross-drilled & zinc coated front rotors
new front and rear WRX calipers 02'
SS braided lines
new rear WRX rotor's02'
no ABS
UEL header
full exhaust
2 glass packs
vibrant street power muffler
DIY oil catch can
KYB GR-2 shocks

rallitek front AND rear swaybars
whiteline front tower bar
new MOOG front endlinks
rallitek solid rear endlinks
neon coil mod
STI plug wires
denso iridium plugs
no AC belt
ABS delete
95amp SVX alternator
1" subtle solutions lift kit
braided ss clutch hose

anyone have issues with the wagon rear wiper not working? the new rear glass from the parts wagon was installed but the wiper wont budge. the stalk for the wipers is broken, could that be why? bad signal or something? or maybe its just an old wiper unit? I have a backup wiper unit but I cant figure out how to get the old one off, the bolt holding it on is well stuck and I dont want to get too rough on my new rear window. any advice? my 1st thought is to replace the wiper stalk and see if that works, I also have a backup for that.

looks nice, not a white car fan myself but I always loved that color combo,

Never had rear whiper problems myself but I. Know that the honda element rear whiper arm is a nice up grade if it turns out that's ur problem

parts update.
got those blaupunkt speakers in  crass neaver sounded so good :smt023

dohc 2.5 new head gaskets, timing belt, new seals front to back, new alternator, new starter, new thermostat, compression test good, injector flow test good, new coil-plugs-plug wires. all done less than 30k ago ready to go into the outback. very excited to get rid of that raggedy ars warped head slow piece of shyt thats in it.

when engine goes in getting UEL header and WRX muffler I have put on with two 2.5" glass packs and an O2 spacer I have.

KYB gr2's still in the box waiting for Smiths outfitting specialties to get back to me about the 2.5" lift kit and steel skid plate I want to get from them.

rallitek swaybar F&R and whiteline steel endlinks F&R to be ordered as soon as taxes are in :smt023

other than that I got a chance to detail the interior and work on fixing the rear window wiper, still can't get it off

as soon as spring comes me and some friends and I are making another paint booth setup in the garage for some satin black top and black truck bed liner for the "outback" part, it will be the perfect opportunity to put the 3 rust free doors I have on :smt023 . also the 16" "snowflakes" will get the black treatment. gona be SWEET!

and eventually I'll get new tint but its not a big priority so it will come last.

I have emailed them twice but no response and I can't find a US distributor.

RS MN

There isn't a us distributor. The reason its so extremely expensive is you need to pay for shipping from australia.

Try Georgestocks in New Zealand:
http://www.georgestock.co.nz/Springs.asp

They are the official distributor for Kings Springs in NZ, and I have bought a ton of stuff from them (only when I'm home visiting).

Reuben (here on SL-i) might be able to hook you up with shipping the parts if George Stocks turns out to be too expensive.

I have KYB's already so I don't need those. so the springs are taller? are they also stiffer? and this rear spacer bit, is that due to the outback being heavier in the rear? if so I would rather get a better setup so its not all floppy. touge factory is looking into some kingsprings for me. fingers crossed.

ahhhhhhh............. its finally done. some d-bag was tired, cold, and in a hurry at 1am (me) so the rears went on backwards :smt009 . well after a test ride the ripped the shit out of the body scraping of the undercoating to bare metal. so I called it a night and went at it the next day, and I have 2 kids mind you and I am a stay at home dad so free time to work on the car just doesn't exist. but thanks to Andy (the frozen birk in the pic) I got the new replacement kyb from SVS. so I put the new front on and got the rears on rite and got the brakes BACK on and the rims so Andy could bring it down to the alignment shop. So when he gets back he tells me there's no brakes, so I check it out and the peddle goes to the floor :smt013 . So back on jack stands, rims off, and back to bleeding. I did a full bleed and still nothing, and this is today and I'm going on a business trip tomorrow :smt002 AKA drinking with friends I haven't seen in a while as I don't get out much anymore. so I start thinking the worst, something is f'ed up and my once a year holiday is over. well after a full bottle of dot3 this solid yellow bubbly old brake fluid comes out for 4-5 bleeds :smt012 . got everything feelin good an went for another test drive this on including some church parking lot atheism :smt023 . I also did a rear diff fluid change and a oil change while it was up. she's feelin rite

:smt023

It's the best and worst at the same time.

I wish I could appreciate the moment when I'm in it more often. :smt012

I go back and forth on "wanting" a full time job in my field vs. appreciating NOT having that stress, schedule, scene in my life... Mostly I come back to appreciating not having the job, and then I go outside with my boy.

In fact, today I need to test a ski kit for the bike trailer, I fabed with another stay-at-home dad last night!

Cheers dads, keep your chins high and think about ALL the sweet car stuff you can think about!!

Ooh, and I certainly appreciate the lack of thorough thiniking when doing a project, like you well illustrated in your strut swap, brake issue :smt002

The car looks good! :smt031

yes.
Here is the rear.. 97 OB left, 99 FOR (painted) right
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2011/02/DSC01863JPG-1.jpg
(note, OB spring is up-side down...)

You'll need the FOR upper spring perch for the front since the FOR front spring has a slight taper to the coil on the sop coil... Here is an SVX pix as an example, but the FOR is the same... You can use either OB or FOR top hats, but you need the upper perch from the fozzy to go with the spring...

top coil on second gen OB (03), but 1st gen is the same

pulled front and rear subframes off for rebuilding and paint (STi pink), will be putting a lift kit on once I find the one I want and then the whole setup will be put on the outback once it gets painted in the summer. EVERYTHING will be clean, painted, rust free, and new! cleaning the new engine and its looking good:) almost there :smt023 maybe I should freshen up the ol' 5spd b4 I put it back in with the new engine, new syncros are needed and I'd like to see the gears b4 I start raging on them.

Unless by "said" you mean those red ones in the pic... the red ones are in the rear struts of my car :smt002
BUT I do have a pair of forester front springs, although the upper perches are in my car, cradling SVX springs. . .

You'll need those forester upper perches to marry the forester FRONT springs to your OB struts.

I'll try to get a side-by-side picture, of the gen 1 FOR front with the gen 1 OB front, for you...

How much of a lift would the rear get with forester springs? I think I will continue my search for H6 front springs, I heard they give a 1" lift to the front so I want comparable lift in the rear (thats what she said).

sweet!! Yeah, you'd've been pissed when you got it all apart then realized the FOR bits wouldn't seat into the OB perches. That was my experience with SVX springs when changing my struts... nearly a year later, I got it all done though ;)
looking forward to the updates, if not here link to where you have it, yeah?

Take some measurement photos too. It's fun and cool to see the differences. hub-center to top of wheel well, ground to top of wheel well, rear diff, rear cat (or lowest part in front), etc...

well I have rust free cally doors with tinted windows I'll be putting in, but I also have rust free subframs F&R and a 30K fresh engine that are all going in after I finish rebuilding the subframes with new polly bushings and a lift kit, also the forester springs to go with the KYB GR-2's I have. then I will get the tint matched up so its even and then comes the paint:) while the car is stripped of subframes and drivetrain I will be getting all the rust taken care of, grinding or welding in new stuff (I gave it a light going over and it looks good but you never know until you get up close.) whatever it needs, then black truckbed liner for a full underbody coat and the "outback" part along the bottom will also be blk truckbed liner, the rest of the body will be satin black or satin Ti I cant decide yet. I want to get tube style front and rear bumper replacements but they are well pricey. stock USDM lights thank you and I'm getting a rallitek light bar, and maybe a big ars yak rack just for looks:)

I am having the hardest time deciding on a muffler... I am thinking a twin tube, SPT, shitty muffler shop muffler, cherry bomb, magnaflow, remus? I have UEL header, 2" piping, 2 glass packs, and the stock muffler so all custom accept the muffler. I want quiet but it sounds like a prius which is to say too quiet, I don't want a loud car at all I want the sound for me not others, so what should I get?

make sure you put a tip on it so it'll extend past your bumper. it'll make it soo much quieter in car.

oh yes. I actually got a different muffler from the same company its a street power but a single exit not dual, it a 2.5 in and 2.5 out straight through oval in black, but ya when the shop puts it on with the new header ( other one cracked) I'll get a tip put on it.

what is the weakest part of a subaru coolant system? I see a lot of waterpump replacements, is that it? how about the thermostats? when do those typically go? and the radiators? how well do those do? and can I stay in the subaru family for a better radiator? I'm not having trouble I just want to get ready :smt023 but on the subject it does sit at 1/2 on the gauge but its steady, my GT sat well below half all the time.

Springs in route dude!

O.K. for pics...

1. Have your photobucket open and right click on the pic you want to post here...

2. Go down to "copy image location" and left click on that

3. In your post here (or whatever forum you're posting pix too...), up above the window you're typing your text into, you'll see a button that says "Img", left click that.

4. You'll see some code that says 'bracket img bracket' 'bracket img bracket' in the middle of the two img tags, right click and go down to "paste" Or just use the keyboard shortcut [control] and the letter "V" (known as ctrl+v) and the URL for your photobucket picture will pop up between the img code tage in the forum...

good luck! and post away... this does not use your limited "upload" ability to share pix, but just redirects an image magically from photobucket to the forum...

NEATO!

ya solid front endlinks are not a good idea with the rallitek bar, a lot of other mods will be needed to undo the understeer created but that stiff of a front end. I just got brand new Moog endlinks for mine. it feels great with the rear bar and solid endlinks.

wow an offroad subaru meet would be awesome! I always see subaru meets with tones of WRX's and STi's but no offroadarus, I guess we outback owners have better things to do;) but maybe we could get together once a year around tax season so we can afford to do something drastic like meet in the desert for some serious subaru abuse. I would be driving from the great mixed north so others can do it too. I know there are enough foresters and outbacks to get attention for subaru offroading, maybe we could get media attention and turn this into something real, hey I can dream rite:)

I am 4-sure putting on the forester springs all I need is the spring perches for the front and I'm golden. what I'm referring to is after that, I am toying with the old hockey puck lift:) or a block of treated wood or a custom drilled aluminium blocks, those type of things. the forester springs will give me an inch or so but of course I want MORE.lol. and the higher I go the more positive camber I will get.

I'm interested in what you come up with for fixing camber once you get >2" over stock.. I'm thinking about wobbling my upper strut hole and welding a washer to give me more adjustability out of my camber kit. Mostly b/c I don't have access to junkyards closer than 4 hours from me.... and b/c it sounds like a fun mod :D

OR, you could swap in gen 2 forester suspension (struts, springs and tophats.... That lifts an OB more than just gen 1 FOR springs in OB struts....

BUT, when you already have the parts. . . . ;)

Ooh and congrats on your engine rebuild! Was it the HG failure, or something else?

ya the front tyres rub in extreme situations but daily driving doesn't rub so I'm excited to get the for springs on.
the engine in the car now is fine, I just like my old engine better:) its newer in a rebuild (about 30k) and its got a new timing belt, injectors, neon coil, cleaned intake manifold, new PVC, new fuel filter, lots of new stuff. its a lot faster than the engine in there now, and its from my GT and I loved that car.

I've heard about the mod, but tell me about the Neon coil. Adventages, disadvantages, etc. How much of the difference you notice in the GT motor would you attribute to the coil, and what performance differences would you attribute to other things like, plugs, wires, cleaned intake, newer injectors etc.... ooh wait, that's the point of all that newer stuff, better performance ;)
But seriously, give me your $.02 on the neon coil bit.

well the neon coil wasn't set up rite so we swapped back to a stock one. it was miss-firing bad. I will double check the firing pattern again and if I had it rite I will scrap the Idea but it was of by 2 cylinders I think so its most likely my fault and I will try again.

ya its the first one ive seen with a plastic cover not a metal one. so should i have put on some sort of gasket sealer? i pulled it off to see inside and just screwed it back on. when the engine is cooled down and off it doesnt leak. it only leaks after a hard workout. and the PVC valve and the lines going down from that are really oily, I know thats mildly normal but this is fresh liquidy oil that smells slightly of petrol.

My advise for painting would be to avoid bomb cans and look into a single stage auto paint. Not sure if you own a compressor, but even a compressor of any size can lead to paint looking way better than most bomb can jobs. not to mention bomb cans can get pretty expensive once you buy enough to complete a whole car... if you havn't already bought a boat load of bomb cans i can point you in a couple directions if your interested.

No, vinyl is very expensive. You have to be pretty good with a bomb can to get anything worth while. I can lay down a mean bomb can paint job, but that being said, Stat is absolutely correct, spraying is way better.

Also, you should realize that flat paint jobs are the hardest, most unforgiving paint jobs you can do.

To get a car wrapped in vinyl is about $2000. I would also say stay away from spray cans. I can tell a car that has been caned, as a bodyman, and they look like crap.

You could get away with doing the lower half with a can, but I would take the top half to get done at a shop. The lower would not be as noticeable...

I have done flat black b4 on the gt and practiced first on some tin I had did a pretty good job, and as I said I dont want a show quality finish its going to get chipped, dented, scratched, and gouged offroading anyway. but it is going to be a "satin" finish with yes is the hardest paint to lay down, the care instructions for the new M3 with the satin gray is insane! but looking at guns online I find gravity feed (better ive heard) for less than $20 and I need a bigger compressor anyway as buisiness is getting big (I fix subarus, toyotas, and VW, currently working on a 95' jette) so thats a good buy for me as well. I'm looking for a good used compressor if you know of any for sale. we have a good auto paint suply shop here in D-town so I'll be able to order an exact replica of the pegani zonda f satin Ti, and factory STi pink for the little details I'm thinking of, like a "GTi" grill ring, pink light bar, and STi pink winter rims.

yeah, but more like my buddy with the compressor, spray gun and body-shop/painting experience did it. we went the cheap route though, when shoppong for read automotive paint (with hardener, etc etc.). we just used a red scotch pad to scuff the clear coat, taped off the trim and sprayed a rust-X (like rustoleum) satin black, 4 coats. To get my 2-tone.
The spoiler is already oxidizing and fading (from southern Utah desert sun) in a year and a quarter, but it ain't no thing. I think rubbing alcohol will bring the finish back, or we could just squirt it again. The body is fine, since it's down low and not in such blazing sun as the spoiler...

I'd (after talking with my buddy who knows a thing or two about paint) avoid rattle cans. They're cheap and just that, not nearly as durable as a real spray job... Especially the "clear coat" spray can... avoid avoid.

Prodriver, not sure if you ever saw my thread, or for that matter my legacy since i painted it, but even with how much half assing i did, it still came out much better and i think has held up much better than the average bomb can job..
viewtopic.php?f=9&t=7014 (http://www.sl-i.net/FORUM/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=7014)

that was all done with a borrowed HF HVLP gun, a way too small 2 gallon compressor (for painting with a HVLP you want volume, pressure only needs to be about 40psi), and topside boat paint... used maybe $100 worth of paint, primer, and thinner to complete it. my next go around with my integra this year i will end up using a cheapish single stage auto paint, mostly because the color selection for boat paint is pretty crappy.

Clutch; I want a bit more torque handling, thinking of upgrading to STi or WRX clutch if they will fit/ are better than stock. any recommendations? some times when pulling larger vehicles (trucks) out of the ditch the clutch will slip even though its in pretty good condition.

Throw out bearing; is stock OEM the way to go? I want to get stainless braided line to replace the stock crapy inability to dump the clutch, not that I do this, just want a much firmer engagement.

rear main seal; might as well if I'm gona be back there, whats the best?

so if I get a better clutch and pressure plate will I need a better CMC? a better diff and trans (GC STi if I can find or else 2.5rs) better clutch holding and a good stock 2.5 is a lot more stress than the outback has ever handled, I want to cover all the bases b4 its on the road with this setup.

No, you shouldn't have to do anything with your CMC so long as it works fine now
No, actually if you ended up with a GC Sti tranny you would need a new clutch/pressure plate/ flywheel all together
A tougher clutch will increase the amount of torque that the clutch can hold, so yes more stress can be transmitted to the rest of the drivetrain because the clutch WON'T slip. this does not mean your transmission will just give up on life all together if you still drive it appropriately.

as for my recommendation about the Action clutch, they seam to be marketing a single clutch for Legacys, 2.5rs, and WRXs which is impossible since NA subarus don't use the same style of clutch as the turbo subarus, i have sent a question in for clarification from them until i hear back from them i would not recommend them.

put lights on the front light bar, and found a hatch bar at the junk yard :smt023 installed that and it looks sweet! puting it on was a bit of a faff with my giant hands but 800 scratches later its on. :smt023 going to the fabric store (my gran will be pissed I went w/o her XD) to pick out / order gray and black alcantara for the dash and door cards, still cant deside what to do for the headliner... toss up between a pink tartan style pattern or the old VW GTi gray recaro seat cloth, you know the gray with black "RECARO" printed all down the middle. I want to keep in mind the outside of the car will be more sinister than the F117 sb, so a cheeky splash of colour inside is what I want.

so I have KYB GR-2's on now with the stock outback springs, I have finished acquiring the forester springs and have ordered front spring perches (not the mount or "top hat") my question is should I keep my one year old KYB's or get a fresh set meant for a forester? reason I ask is, will the taller springs render the outback shocks useless i.e. will it be all soft. are there better shock choices for a forester? what are the weight differences in outback ( my car sits at 3280lb w/o driver)vs forester? is the 1999 forester heavier than my 98' outback? its very stiff as it is, but I don't want to loose that.

FWIW, When I had an SPEC stage II, I only got 55K out of it behind a NA EJ22 with milder off roading than I do now (although I have better gearing now so there's a confounding variable ;) I did some pulling folks out of the snow, but like 80+% city and 10ish% highway on that SPEC...
Yes, race clutches are stronger and hold more torque (as in my case, nearly 2X more than the engine could put out) than OEM, and the engine will stall before the clutch slips, BUT it is also a shorter life clutch.....

As for springs and shocks...

I'd say stick with your newish GR2 struts... Forester struts have a lower bottom perch and therefore won't allow as tall of tire as OB struts do. OBs are heavier than FOR and I think the FOR shock is longer to account for the taller spring. That said, if you stuff a taller spring in a shorter strut (e.g. FOR spring in OB strut), the spring will be under a touch more tension than when mounted in a FOR strut (thus lift).
In fact a gen 2 OB spring will lit a gen 1 OB a touch (the spring has a 1/4 turn more spring), enough of a difference for the extra weight from gen 1 to gen 2.

So there are 2 arguments here:

A: the FOR spring is rated for a lighter rig, so it'll be saggier in a heavier car, or
B: if FOR spring is compressed into a shorter (OB) strut, it'll be under more tension, thus providing more dampening force...

BUT, FOR (gen 1) and OB (gen 1 and 2 H-4) and the SVX spring gauge (coil thickness) are all 19mm. They get thicker in gen 2 H-6 and bajas. Thus, same steel thickness but they differ in number of coils as per weight of vehicle or ride characteristics (like FOR has a stiffer ride than OB). SOOOO, a FOR strut might similarly provide a stiffer ride (I say might as I can't say personally...I know folks here and there have done FOR strut lifts on LEG, but i haven't read suspension stiffness reports), but they will also not allow as tall of a tire as an OB strut will allow. BUT, if you're not looking for a 27-28 inch tire, a FOR strut would probly be fine.
BUUUT, if they're all the same thickness and differ in number of coils, that's the difference in ability. I can't say for sure, but I assume same thickness gives same rate (same temper in the steel, etc), but more coils = more load capacity.

Dammit Jim, I'm a biologist not a metallurgical engineer ;)

Whatever, i know that a FOR spring will lift up a gen 1 OB a touch. I like them in the back of my OB-lifted LEG, and the SVX spings in front lift more than FOR springs AND hold my heavy bumper just fine.

I think it's all a bit stiffer than stock, and probably stiffer than when on OB springs... but it's tough to say for sure without a side by side comparison.

:smt026 I hope this is helpful in some way :) :smt026

the noise is exactly like rubbing 2 quarters together in your fingers, and its coming from the driver side wheel area, i was thinking it was the wheel bearing but i just got that replaced like 8 months ago at a very high end repair shop and i pulled the knuckle off and did my best to grease the bearing but it still makes noise:( how could it have gone bad so quickly? the bearing on the other side is the original one and its quiet as a mouse. when i listen to other bad bearing noises they sound nothing like this, more of a woom woom woom, not a metallic screeching, sometimes when i turn hardish its quiet then goes back to screeching, could this be something else? i have looked for other culprits like the dust plate scraping on the rotor and stuff but nothing looks out of place. wheel bearing?

NO! as a matter of fact its getting taller soon;) i just want the trans, diff, brembos, hubs, rims, steering rack, links, A-arms, brake & clutch masters, and anything else that will fit under my car, and the steering wheel. the seats and the rest of the int will go up for sale as will the engine, its just worth too much to keep, and i dont really like turbos, maybe high comp pistons or a supercharger kit would get me to keep it.

so the outback wouldent start at the g-store today, left it for a couple min and it fired rite up??? it wasnt getting fuel, the pump made noise and it spuddered a couple attempts but nothing, eventually the fuel in the lines used up and no spudder at all just starter cranking, but as i said i left it for a couple mins and it fired rite up the first time as per usual, its throwing the classic O2 codes as i dont have a cat, but also getting a p0440 evap code, i have a home made oil separator but have been using it for 5k+ and no probs so i dont think its that, and it was definitely a fuel problem, any thoughts? thanks...

Keep an eye on your crank position sensor, that friggen thing gave me Hell for the first 2 months I had my BD. The car would start fine when cold but when it warmed up it wouldn't start again, without great difficulty.

i replaced that and the temp sensor like 2 months ago, and like i said it half started or sputtered the first 8 or so times i tried to start it, then after the fuel in the rails ran out and their was just starter noise. so im about 99% sure its a fuel problem, clogged lines, clogged filter, something along those lines.

Fuel senders (both) or fuel pump... if you are going in there to replace either or you should just do it all one shot.
