I'll pick up a leak down tester as soon as I'm able to. I made sure not to touch the timing belt or the heads before doing this.
Hey Slav, pacific engine and machine sounds promising from what you've said about their experience with Subaru motors, I hope
it won't end up taking too long. Also, I noticed you do a really good job of cleaning up your engines, any secret cleaning tools you're using? haha

Engine degreaser.... or if you are careful, Oven Cleaner. Just dont let it sit too long and avoid painted parts!

Get a cleaner/degreaser that is safe fpr aluminum. Read the label because some cleaners can make your aluminum look horrible and a course brush. Tape of anywhere u dont want water getting into and go to town. Use a shop vac to suck everything up then with fresh water carefully wash all the cleaners away. If u want u can ask paul at pacific to bead clean your heads. He will charge for it but they will literally look brand new.

So great news! I did a leak down test today and managed to hold air in all 4 cylinders.. This will leave you confused so let me explain..

I took the timing belt off and moved the crank to tdc and put the cams at 12 and 6 o clock correct positions. Both passenger side cams
and the exhaust driver side cam were able to move with no force by hand and no problems. What I found to be an issue is my Driver side
Intake CamShaft! Basically this camshaft has been installed incorrectly. If it's at it's proper 6 o' clock position air leaks like crazy. The cam has to
be basically flipped 180 to be in the correct position but the good news is that it does hold air when moved to the proper position except it's VERY hard to move.

With that being said, it's clear to me that none of the valves are bent in this motor and I in fact did install the timing belt correctly like I thought I did in the first place.
Because the driver side intake cam is so hard to move, and the valves close at 180 - this tells me that the intake cam is throwing the vehicle out of time and that
it's possible that I installed the cam caps improperly or I placed the cam in the motor the wrong way.

Tonight I have a TV commercial for Honda of Lynnwood that I need to edit, on top of a Russell Wilson video I'm working on, and some more things and in the morning
I'm driving to Portland to shoot another commercial for another car dealership so tonight and tomorrow I'll be busy but when I have free time, I'll take off the driver side
head yet again and inspect the intake cam. I'll take pictures so you can see if I'm right or not about it being installed incorrectly.

Awesome news! As you could probably tell, I am a huge fan of that simple device. They can tell you alot and help you head down the path to discover small issues and big troubles. I've had similar situations of minor little issues being built up to big high dollar problems, and avoided some of them due to the right tester! Now that you have it, periodically check it, maybe once a year and it can help you forsee the wear and tear and closer predict when you need to do a tear down and for what problem!

Its hard to see in the pic, what numbers are you seeing ?

I didn't think you could install the cams wrong just as long as they are in the correct position when the belt is installed. I'm wondering if the gear on the end of the camshaft is like Toyota's vvti? The cam uses oil pressure to advance the accuator but can lock into the advanced postion when removed and air pressure is needed to accuate the gear to get it back in place.

Variable valve timing, like vtec.

http://drive2.subaru.com/Win05_WhatsInside.htm

Just a thought, read up on it if you don't know much about vvt. Since you had the cam out and such just be Leary of the actuator locking. I know from experience with toyotas.

Well I guess I'll just have to take off the valve covers when I have time to find out.

You shouldn't have the cam installed 180 off, I don't think that's possible.

First off... Zach, you need to leave a message when you call... haha... I NEVER return calls unless there is a message with it.

You can install the cams wrong, but at least on EJ25D's it can only be done with it being off center, slightly. Even if it's off by 180, you can spin them to the correct setting if the pistons are inset. I do it all the time when I blast motors apart and re-assemble them.

Good to hear the valves are still good though. Thats a big dollar project you dont have to do. I would look at what Brad say about the VVT though. I have yet to pull heads on one of those motors, so I'm not so sure about them.

slavik.86
05-03-2013, 11:36 AM
U cant install a cam shaft 180º off. That would be called a bad timing job lol. But like iv been telling u over the phone u can hawever mix up the cam safts. Passenger side cams are longer then driver side cams. U can also mix up cam caps and end up making the cam to tight. Thats why its always necessary to lable all the caps. The cam shafts do have markings on them. Ir means intake right. Er means exhaust right. IL means intake left. EL Means exhaust left. Also make sure the dowl pins are in the cam shafts. It is critical to have them in and with the pins in place u pjysicly can not install the cam gears/shaft 180º off

Alright, Slav, it's confirmed that the cams are in their correct homes, L IN & L EX are both in the right spot. As far as the dowl pins,
I'm pretty sure there's only one way to install your sprocket over them so I don't know if I messed that up or not, I suppose it's possible
though and would make sense why this cam would happen to be out of time? idk

I read up on that article about AVCS.

The only thing that I noticed that was bad was that my intake cam was torqued down way too tight. I thought I could make my 1/2" drive
work for 7.5 foot pounds but it doesn't go that low I suppose so it was being torqued to 20-no bueno. It's possible that with the combination
of my weak tensioner plunger and my tight intake cam- the belt might've jumped a couple teeth. It's actually a good thing
my motor didn't start because other wise I probably would have seized my intake cam and it would weld it self to the head.

I took off the banjo bolts and checked the screens/filters and they were very clean so that means my bottom end is good.

other than the cam being torqued down too tight, I can't find anything else that seems to be wrong.. But I don't wanna put
my motor back in only to find that my car won't start again. So, I think I'm gonna take it to the dealer because I have a service
technician and mechanic that both are really hyped about my build and they're willing to check it out for me for no charge.

Today I packed up my motor and brought it to my homie Ben Knudsen - Subaru Mechanic at Bruce Titus Subaru Tacoma
he seriously hooked me up. I got a receipt for $100 and not only is he doing a more "official" leak down test for me, but
he's reinstalling the intake manifold, radiator lines, pcv hoses, tmic, and intake manifold wiring. I hated dealing with my intake
manifold because it's such a tight squeeze so it's really nice to have that burden off my back.

Also, it's actually a good thing I ended up pulling the motor because a year ago when I put the motor in, I installed it without
the retainer clips that hold the clutch fork to my 5 year old throw out bearing, so today I picked up a new bearing and clips - without buying
these parts that's a recipe for some annoying rattling at the front of the tranny :)

I'm gonna pick up my fully assembled motor tomorrow and drop it right in if I have the time. Hopefully it fires right up! and hopefully
the leak down test results come out positive!!! Lets hope so!

Alright the Leak Down Test Results came in. I was told that I don't have any bent valves, but piston rings "could" be an issue.

I know this is going to sound bad, but there's a lot to consider.

1: 30%
2: 25%
3: 35%
4: 20%

My mechanic is being really optimistic thinking that since the motor hasn't ran for more than 2, 3 years
it's probably still gummed up inside and needs to be driven before we'll see some lower numbers.
Also, I know fuel evaporates pretty quickly, but there was enough fuel that went down without combusting
that it could be chilling on the cylinder walls allowing for blow by leakage.

We saw no signs to lead us to believe that the rings are gone because the banjo bolt filters were clean
and there was no metal shavings in the oil pan to be found anywhere.

My mechanic told me to just run it and hope that everything clears up overtime and use some liquid to clear up the internals.

Also, it's confirmed that my timing is done correctly and the motor should fire right up when reinstalled.

and here are the possibilities.

Either 1: The motor fires up, runs like crap and over time clears up and then runs smooth
or 2: The motor fires up, runs like crap…

haha- I'm hoping for option 1, lets just hope for the best that I can get down to 10-15%

Did your buddy mention spritzing the cylinder walls with a light oil and either turning it over by hand or giving it a few bumps of the starter? The oil will help if there is any surface rust in there, which is likely if its been sitting that long!

rallywagon
05-08-2013, 01:29 AM
No he didn't but actually, he along with the service manager told me that the rest of the mechanics in the shop took
a look at the numbers and they all agreed that they feel that it just needs to be ran because it's been sitting for so long.

Here's some pictures! I brought the motor home at 7PM and installed it in about 2 hours. Now I just have to borrow another battery in the morning and start it up!

Chuck mentioned my VSS crisis which I haven't brought up yet. Basically, in this swap I've been taught that the cluster I'm running
will never work. I was told that the VSS, which is suppose to run off the ABS sensors won't work- something to do with the canbus/noncanbus system mix.
Because it will "never" work, my speedometer won't read and my RPM's will cut off at 4k.

Well Chuck and I were up pretty late one night researching and talking about what I'll have to do, I spoke with Paul Scott at ECS Performance
in Connecticut and he said that I'll have to use an '04 STI intake manifold wiring setup and do some complicated stuff….I definitely am done messing with my wiring.
Well… Great news! Chuck spent about 10 minutes on the inter web and happened to run across a company called DCCDPro.com and they sell a custom
VSS module that wires into the VSS wiring at the ECU, and my ABS Control Module, and 1 wheel's ABS Speed sensor. It came in the mail today. I'm stoked to see if it works!

I actually talked to Dom at Maxwell Power today about the VSSPro and he said it's crap haha.
He said it'll work but he said that only 1 out of 10 of those will function 100%. Maybe it just
has to do with the wiring job. I've gained some good experience with that so I should be able to manage
just fine. Some good news! Today I bought an '06 WRX HoodScoop and '06 WRX Brakes/drilled/slotted rotors

So today Slav and I discovered oil coming out of my down pipe really bad. I took off the TMIC
and the turbo was in a deep pool of oil..We noticed my dump tube was kinked in two places.
Tomorrow I'm going to take my turbo to a guy in Tacoma who can inspect it for free to make
sure it's all good. Didn't see any shaft play and I'm trying to be optimistic that it's all good. Basically
that dump tube has a 50/50 option to be installed and I installed it the other way.

On another note..

The '06 Rear Brake Rotors were too big for the '02 WRX Hubs so today I bought the '06 hubs
from Slav. In an effort to taking off the long lateral link bolt- my friend and I took a breaker bar
and both of our 4 arms to push down on it because it wouldn't budge and the socket slipped off the nut
and with all of that force the breaker bar smashed my finger. It ripped the nail right off and split the
bed of my thumb. I had to go to the ER to get 3 stitches, the guy tried sewing on a fake nail with 10 stitches
and failed so he just cut it all and took it off. When I got the lidocaine shots and stitches I just imagined
Auto X'ing my car and said in my head over and over," Subaru, Subaru, Subaru, Subaru" haha - well I may never
grow a thumb nail back :/ at least I can say I was working on my Subie! Oh well. I think the vikatan is kicking in

My turbo never came with the vacuum line tri-nipple connector/hoses so I made my own and hooked it to the boost solenoid JUST today. Pretty important thing I left out.

Still need to get fans, fix the vacuum leak, get an O2 sensor for the down pipe, re-flare some brake lines,
figure out what the clanking noise is every time I drive the car, finish painting the interior, and I need to wire in that VSS.

Other than that I should be solid! Any suggestions on getting an oxygen sensor? OEM is too expensive..

Dead91silvia
05-16-2013, 11:36 AM
Aftermarket o2 sensors are not bad. Just make sure to get one thats an exact fit, not a custom fit. I have had nothing but problems with the cut and splice ones.

Fans should be easy. Any Legacy from 98-99 will work... Or... do you have a different radiator? I'm too lazy to look... haha

Youtube just paid for my 8mm Grimmspeed Phenolic Spacers and new gaskets! Getting ready to delete my TGV's -
then clearing the CEL codes that are putting my car in limp mode which are keeping my RPM's from reaching past 3,000 RPM's.
Ultimately I'll be gaining anywhere from 5 to 12 whp, reducing heat soak at the intake manifold, fixing the obnoxiously loud air leak,
and letting my motor rev up past 3k rpm. I'm lovin the progress. Not to mention I finally got those fans haha

On top of all of that, I plugged 3 exhaust leaks by adding a missing O2 Sensor, installing a plug at the dp, and installing a plug on my header.

Fun fact, this plug came from a destroyed Subaru block! Yes they're an exact match

Also, Slav is letting me check out this JDM grill to see if I wanna buy it or not.
What's your opinion? Should I stick with my WRB grill that looks like it's molded with the bumper?
Or should I sacrifice that cool look to say that I have a JDM grill, unless you guys just dig the black grill,
let me know what you think. Sorry for the poor image quality

Just FYI, that looks to be a short grill made for a 95-96 bumper. Even mounted correctly there will be a small gap between the grill and the bumper. I'm sure of it because I've never ever seen a full size grill with the mesh pattern before.

This is the best looking grill because of the honeycomb mesh- any other mesh

Maybe I should do something creative to bridge the gap? any ideas? or is this a dumb question? haha

Well... I've just begun trying to mold the L-type short grille recess into my GT bumper. I suppose you could try that, probably beat me to the finish line. But I'm still not sure how I'm gonna put it back together.

... Duct tape. LOL

Navi271
05-23-2013, 10:34 PM
^ it's probably easier to do that with your stock grill instead of a nice JDM grill tho. I think other people have tried filling in the gap below the grill, but then it just looks like the lower edge of the grill is FAT and the top is skinny. If you could make it even all around to fit the gap, it would be awesome.

But, I'm one of those people that's ok with the gap. This is why I said it looked great!

Muse
05-23-2013, 11:04 PM

This is just a wild guess but you could possibly mould the grill into your hood and figure out some way to extend your latch. So when you pop it the grill and hood move as one piece.
Not sure if it’s possible, just an idea.

rallywagon
05-30-2013, 07:58 PM
That is very possible, I just would need something to make it sit flush with the bumper-maybe I can
mold the bumper almost to replicate the center of an '04 WRX bumper kind of where it sticks out and up in the middle

Christofuer
05-31-2013, 09:47 PM
Exactly, the only problem is you might have to re-spray the bumper, hood and probably the fenders just so the paint matches.
Not sure how you would mold it though, I'm thinking some kind of body filler.

Sorry to see you give up on that bro. I think getting a doner car is the right way to go. I probably wouldnt touch the wiring yourself.
Now you see what i mean when i told you it takes more time and money than you can imagine.
Swaps are difficult tasks. If your gonna give it another try.. 2 peices of advice..
1. Have a clear and distinct plan. Meaning when your swapping it figure out stuff like
'Which car is the gas tank coming from, if id doesnt fit what is my 'plan-B'. And what is the most logical order of installing things (ill give you a hint its the same
way they do it in the factory.)
2. Get the car running first. Dont spend a ton of time and money on stuff before the car runs. Then once you get it running and all the bugs worked out then modify it.
You may wonder why i say that and say its easier to do it once. But alot of aftermarket parts dont always function exactly like they should. A large numner of modified cars never quite work perfect again. So if you have problems with it you dont know if its a wiring issue, a aftermarket part failure, installation of parts or what.
We had a 99legacy with a full sti swap. Car had a bunch of problems because of this reason. After paying us 1500 bucks to go thru his shit and try to make it right it still had grounding problems and needed to be rewired. The car got parted out.

Thanks man, Slavik is doing the entire swap for me. I'll help out where I can but spending most of my time filming it come together. In 8 hours I'll start bidding on a 2005 forester XT with only 50k miles on it! Tomorrow I'll tell you guys if I got it or not! Wish me luck!!

I brought $4,500 and kept my max bid to $3,400 for room for fees/taxes.

It sold for $5,200 before fees and taxes... Dang- oh well, just keep looking.

There was a 2 or 3 WRX's that sold last week, or are you set on a 2.5?

If I may quote a fast and furious movie, "Life's simple, you make choices and never look back."

Sometimes it takes a few mistakes and a lot of money to find out that you need to start over. I've made countless mistakes at work which costed me more time, and my own money to fix. I think you're making the right decision. Just keep it simple. Don't add aftermarket parts that may get in your way of the swap. They can be added on later.
