Bought the car around summer of 09 with a blown clutch. Previous owner had a short shifter, blacked out the taillights, painted the stock gt wheels black and tinted it. My old computer crapped out so i don't have the older pics.

when mounting a lip, i always find the center of the bumper and the center of the lip. i made mine stick out enough to where the center top edge meets the upper bumper lip (i've seen others tuck it in, which i didn't like how it looks) then just use a self tapping screw and work my way left and right until your near by the bend. then i follow the contour of the side and using a stick as a guide so it can stick out just like the bumper. i used a serrated knife to cut off the excess on the side corner.

hard to explain but hope it helps.

also if you paint the bumper lip(kinda) and the lip mounted on it black, it fools the eye that it seems like the lip is really big. almost like a cheap greddy lip

Those flares + canards really make the lines of the legacy aggressive.

Also how much machining was involved to fit those STi internals into the EJ25D?

yes its a v-limited lip

yes it does, the canards makes it flow better since the flares only covered about 2-3 inches of the bumper. i was surprised that it all worked out

there was no machining involved to fit the sti internals because when i rebuilt the engine i found out that it had a phase 2 block with the phase 1 head. Its a direct bolt on to the phase 2 block, just need to find out what piston you need (A or B). Crawford had this deal awhile back (200 shipped for the sti pistons/rods) and it had barely any miles. They said they have alot of new sti engines and tear it down to slap their product in, which was great

Damn i can't remember whats the compression ratio. I need to research it again. There was a post where brydon (rs25.com) where he breaks down the comp ratio. There was also a site that calculates it but its down.

the only thing i found was one with a thin door cap and its fiberglass. this one is abs plastic, very lightweight and i used adhesive to hold it and screw on the ends

yes the flares are abs not fiberglass. easier to bend/flex/contour the body line
the lip is the 06-07 sti's

Also was it difficult to install the wrx rad?

I had to cut the radiator support and pushed it down and reweld it. Then made a lower bracket and used an impreza upper bracket. Its not hard, if you have the tools :smt023

as for the flares, i took pics when i installed it and can't seem to find the camera, I've been using my iphone for pics update. I'm gonna do a diy and at the end of the diy, it will have a link on where to buy the item. Mostlikely an ebay auction. Gonna make sure others know what involves on the process because its irreversible

I had RS seats in my LGT and I loved them! I didn't have any issues with height though, I'm 6'3" and I fit perfect.

The rears aren't 100% perfect. There are two gaps at the top near the pillars and the bench seat isn't shaped the same on the sides so there's a small gap there. I think it's well worth it though. The gaps aren't noticeable and the seats are damn comfy! :D

Actually looked at your diy awhile back :smt023 and after sitting in my friends rs, i was sold. I had to swap the seatbelt latch since my belt wouldnt latch on the rs. The rs uses like an arrow style latch and my gt uses a rectangular shape. The good thing is my latch comes with a sensor that during impact it would not let the belt have slack. Rs didnt come with one

Almost all none Legacy seats seem to lift you up a bit. I have WRX seats and love em. I like the lifted feel, I can see more.

I am 6'4" and the RS seats do sit a bit higher then the Legacy seats but this is small potatoes compared to a GC STi seat.. My head was officially in the sunroof .. I could not close the visor nor could I take speed bumps properly :-(

You have to admit the RS seats even in the back are 100% better then Pre 2000 legacy seat. Bolstering FTW!

I had RS seats in my LGT and I loved them! I didn't have any issues with height though, I'm 6'3" and I fit perfect.

I'm about 5'8 and if i sit up straight, no slouching, my head almost hit the moonroof. Maybe you have the earlier model rs and it sits lower. Or i've notice on the wagon it has a lump on the roof giving you more headroom

I had the RS seats in my sedan and if it put the seat back straight up and didn't slouch my hair would brush the roof. I believe they came from a 2000 RS so I'm not sure if model makes a difference. Either way it was WAY better then the 05 WRX seats that were in it. I couldn't sit comfortable at all with those my head was always hitting the roof.

I don't know the part # but i got it from a local guy. I took bunch of pics when I installed it but the digital camera crapped out (internal memory too :smt013 ). I wanted to let others know whats involved since its irreversable. Its also requires to have alot of suspension/chasis mod to keep the car stiffer cause it kept popping the flares out. Thanks, definitely do the fender brace and let me know how it goes.

Thats what i use, it will hold still until i go over a funky driveway or taking a fast turn.

Thats not bad, my old GT w/pod filter, SPT axleback, LW crank pulley and Nology wires was 117who 118tq (4EAT).

Yeah considering the drivetrain loss for an AWD vehicle. Plus the car is running pig rich! I guess thats how it come with from the factory. I get about 20mpg city and 25 highway.

Also my clutch was slipping, burnt smell :smt011 . Like WTF i just installed it last year and probably only have 5k miles on it

3M makes panel glue.. Its what body shops use to glue on quarter panels instead of welding.

If its good enough for Audi then it should work with well with aggressive stance'd legacy's :-D

I use a 2 part urethane glue, I used the 2 part epoxy to glue the part that popped out but epoxy doesn't like to flex with the body so it pops out again. It's actually not the glue that gives out but where its mounted to. It peels the paint off the body.

Got the 05 LGT rear vlsd before xmas and I just barely installed it a couple of days ago.

I opended it up to make sure its the same ratio as mine (4.11)

They look like they are both open diff but the way you can tell is by spinning those inside gears by hand. Open one is obviously you can freely spin it and the vlsd you can't. It's not like the older vlsd to where the differential is closed. Put it back and spin my rear wheels to make sure they go in the same direction. :smt023

That's awesome!! I've wondered about the internals in VLSDs after I saw the internals of a CLSD. It's good to know what to look for, and always the spin test (if it can be done)

But here's my quick glance, having them side-by-side. The spider gear teeth look a tiny bit different and the right side spider gear's base looks a little different. Like maybe a little viscous coupling kind of thingie in it?

I've actually wondered how a VLSD differs from a Viscous coupling center diff.

ALSO, here's another LSD question for all you out there.

Does a CLSD (clutch-type like from an older RX) act locked by default then slips when it needs to (like turning on pavement)? or do they both (CLSD and VLSD) act open until slippage engages the locking action?

Yes, surprisingly it does! Its the whole differential carrier from an 05 LGT. Just make sure its the right ratio. I used my stock axles too. I had to drop the diff twice because I thought the axles wasn't sliding/locking in but turns out i just had to tap it with a rubber mallet to have it lock on the c clip inside.

You can also grab a rear vlsd out of a different r160 subaru car and just swap the diff to your case with your ring and pinion gear. I was gonna do this but why do all that hassle when you can find the right vlsd with the right ratio and lower miles for $85 :grin: but shipping was $55 :smt009 but can't beat the total price! Didn't have to go out there and pick/pull out the part. :smt026

But here's my quick glance, having them side-by-side. The spider gear teeth look a tiny bit different and the right side spider gear's base looks a little different. Like maybe a little viscous coupling kind of thingie in it?

I've actually wondered how a VLSD differs from a Viscous coupling center diff.

ALSO, here's another LSD question for all you out there.

Does a CLSD (clutch-type like from an older RX) act locked by default then slips when it needs to (like turning on pavement)? or do they both (CLSD and VLSD) act open until slippage engages the locking action?

I paid a LOT for it a year ago and just got it in a couple months ago (but have wanted one for 6 years), especially when newer VLSDs are starting to hit the yards now.
But I do like how it locks up instantly, sometimes I think too easily and well.

Also, I opted for JUST the LS cage and axles stubs so as not to pay for the weight of shipping the whole (3.70) diff carrier. So paid a LOT for only part of a rear diff, then had to do some transplants, and mod the parts needed for it to work.
But then again, their performance and increasing rarity is why they co$t a pretty penny :smt012

I hope it lasts. I'm importing a different tranny to fulfill my capability desires (of like 7 years' want) for my car, so I hope this rear end lasts a LOOONG time.

So you can use pretty much any 4.11 VLSD (I think thats what is in the 05 LGT) and just drop it in our carrier and go?

If you grab a carrier/differential off a LGT 5spd (4.11) then all you have to do is remove your old carrier and install the whole LGT rear carrier. You don't have to drop it in our carrier since its the same ratio. I only opened it up to make sure its the right ratio and make sure it was vlsd. It tripped me out because usually vlsd is on an enclosed diff not an open looking one.

Damm you!!! lol must be nice to have an clsd. I tried looking at 3 different pick n pull at the older subaru's (brat, dl,gl,xt) and no luck. I heard they are hard to find and it must have been really expensive. This is sought after on the datsun community! Did you consider the mechanical lsd? I don't know if they would of been cheaper.

I was going to buy a vlsd from an svx but would of done what you did (swap the guts and grind the cage) but they have a higher mileage and for the price that i got the vlsd, it was a no brainer.

I'm mostly on this site when posting. Only on rs25.com and nasioc when researching. Yeah the svx's have the vlsd with a closed case diff

Its some of the above. Mostly daily driving, street, canyon carving and would love to do auto cross but unsure if they allow some of the chasis bracing (fender brace). Plus its hard for me to make the event cause of the time and distance. From work (bills), side job ($ for my car), spending time with the fam and fixing all of my family members car, and school. I have no time lol

Notice the center vlsd from your pic looks similar to the vlsd on the side gear for the diff.

btw, Did you end up welding your center diff?

Sorry, I just saw this question. No, i didn't weld the center, I just pulled things apart to look when I swapped my transmission. That V center diff is just sitting in its case on the floor.

So I was doing some research on the VLSD. They are better then an open diff. But I guess on track days you can burn up a VLSD pretty damn quick. If it starts to run too hot it loses its ability to "work".

Also it sucks up more drivetrain loss?

Yeah they are more for the street and maybe light track. If your gearing more towards track, invest in a mechanical lsd (about 400 on the diff alone on ebay but i think you have to source the axles for it since its different).

I don't know if it has more drivetrain loss but its a good tradeoff that now both your rear wheels will have a better grip than an open one.

Copy that, VLSD would probably be best in wet and snow, less well suited for tarmac b/c it'll cook if you're racing it... It's more for on and off actuation like you'd get in wet and slippery conditions.

BTW, how would you guys describe drivetrain loss?

Also the mechanical LS you're describing, are you talking clutch-type?
I know older Suby's (like the RX :smt002 ) had them, with a locking but otherwise open center diff, I think and I think some GL-10 wagons had them, but otherwise I think 04-05 STis had a clutch-type rear diff. But I've seen a pic of a different kind of mechanical front LS unit and just don't know if it's clutch type or some other mechanical type.

Drivetrain loss= to me, its any hp/tq that is lost from the engine to the driveline
When i had the rear wheels up, it was alot easier to spin it with the open diff and it takes a lil more work for the vlsd.

I think the clutch type was only offered on the older subaru's (80's). After that I think the rest of the sti's are mechanical (maybe i'm wrong). Its usually called torsen but thats a brand. Its like calling all body filler bondo. The newer sti's 04 and up are r180 while the older models jdm gc8's are r160. Its basically the same thing like the above pic but meant for the rear. It has those funny looking little mechanical gears meshing together.

Haven't updated for awhile but I went pick n pull shopping couple of weeks ago. There was an outback there and was very surprise to see a 97 LGT straight body there. I think the only problem was the headgasket (unsure). Sadden to see it there cause it could of been brought back to life. Anyways I ended up getting the 5spd transmission for it for 100 and the center garnish to mess around and paint it. I also grabbed the cargo tray and rear speaker grill for the outback to install on mine and will be doing a DIY on it.

Had to do it twice cause i only thought it was the fork but turned out it also messed up the clutch/T.O. bearing

I did a 5MT to 5MT swap last year and can pipe in with my findings if it helps.
Stock 95 legacy 3.90 5MT clutch cable for a 99 OB 4.11 5MT with hydro clutch. I swapped the cable clutch bit over to the OB's 5MT, no prob...

I'll also be doing anothe 5MT swap in a few months so I will try to document that one very well too.

I know manual to manual isn't like auto to manual, but there should be some support for you here with that swap!

Stock clutch and it looks like its caused by lack of lubrication on the pivot ball

I think its safe to say that whenever you do clutch job, change your fork too. The parts guy at Subaru told me it often happens for a high mileage subaru's

I got a 99 OB 5MT that had a retrofit sleeve kit on the aluminum throw out bearing's shaft, providing a steel surface for it to seat on. That might be what you're thinking of...

It makes getting an oversize throw out bearing a real headache! I couldn't find where to get JUST and oversize bearing. You had to get the oversize kit, but I had just replaced my whole clutch like 6 months earlier, so all I wanted was a new oversize bearing.... no go, so i just reused the old oversize through out that came with the tranny.

Well I first heard of it from a Suby mechanic. I was interested in trading my BH for his BH. I told him about my sqeaking clutch and he said it was a normal problem. He said subaru sells a clutch sleeve kit for 100bucks and it fixes the problem. I drove the car and it felt waaay better than mine. Straight European smoothness!!

Huh... thats interesting! I got my 94 Toyota truck with the same problem... 340K when I got it, had a crack in the fork. I new from Toyota was like $23, so getting used made no sense.

Any upgrade plans sense the motor is out?

Yes, I'm in the process of notching the subframe for a turbo uppipe. I will also start to turbo my car which should be down for like a month or two since i have to customize pretty much everything :lol:

Hard to tell but if you look closely there is the sleeve there.
Did a clutch job on an A4 quattro with the dual mass flywheel and wow, that thing shifts like butter and so smooth. Once you start upgrading your clutch then you'll loose the stock feeling.

:smt023 You always have nice detailed pics specially technical stuff. I get lazy and don't want to pick up the camera most of the time. I get caught up in the moment to get it done.

Anyways I have the TSK1 TranQuil Sleeve Kit and I have the sticker for a replacement TO bearing. You basically have to call Heuberger Subaru (719-475-1920 in Colorado) and order TSK1-B. Not sure if you have the same kit as I do.

Yeah my last clutch setup, I destroyed it (not knowing about the sleeve kit). It left deep grooves on my flywheel and pressure plate. But my new setup has been slipping with the sleeve kit, new ACT clutch/lightened flywheel, TO bearing. I'm going to take pics and post it on the transmission board and see what others think went wrong.

I got a bunch of measurements trolling one of the yards today... I'm the same way when I have a chance. Pick and Pull's are turning into Nazi yards and over charging. I do have a great rep at some of the other local yards and get hook ups all the time.

I like the idea of trying to make z32 brake work. Thats is something I was also planing. I find it funny how us Nissan guys try to make those parts work on Subaru's... haha

You know, that deck lid will make things easy when doing a different wing since the 3rd brake lights is in it...

It sure does. Once I get the car running I'm going to repaint it, maybe change color. I've been reading about how to make the 300zx brakes on subie's (bracket). Knowing me, I look at it and tell myself that I can make one hahaha. The rears would be hard to make the bracket so I'll be getting a much larger size rear rotor so that I can make a bracket for it.

Yes jdm trunk works. Its not the shape of the trunk but the center tail/garnish is different on the jdm to the usdm. You'll have a gap if you install the jdm center piece to the usdm trunk but if you have both (jdm trunk/center tail) then your golden. Theres also 2 variation of the jdm trunk that i know of. The earlier models come with the 3rd brake light on the trunk like the one I got and another one uses the gt wing.

So I have a set of jdm power folding heated mirrors and also grabbed the 95 folding mirrors. I have transferred everything in and its bolted on the car. I just haven't checked if it works lol

The mirror bases is what put the ears (thats what i call them) on the correct position/angle. The jdm and US have the same ears. I remember on your post that the US replacement glass is $15. For $5 more, I was able to buy both 95 mirrors for $40 + shipping. The only thing is you have to elongate one of the mounting holes and grind a little on the base so the body could sit flush.

I transfered the jdm folding motor and the heating element to the US mirrors. I have it bolted on the car and wired up with relays but I don't know if I messed it up because its not working lol. I have yet to install the glass

Its hard to tell the difference from the fixed mirror. If you compare the jdm and usdm base (folding mirrors), you'll be able to tell. I will try to take a pic for you tomorrow.

Thanks thats what I was aiming for. If I have to do it again I would leave some chrome on the surrounding of the turn and city lights. Because the high beam area overpower it. I suck at photoshop so the best I can do is to explain it lol

Don't hate, participate :lol: lol but yeah, you should do it. Try my suggestion on top. Btw depending on the headlight, the chrome might peel off once you remove the tape. Pass side came out good but the driver side the tape peeled off most of the chrome :smt013 so I just touched it up. I even use the thin tape they use to do flames/graphics

Yeah the city lights are wired, that's why I shouldn't have painted that hour glass looking shape on the city light side. I think the other way of fixing it is to use an LED, since it'll be pointing straight and don't need a reflector.

Sry haven't updated for awhile. Did alot of moving (total of 3 moves) and also worked on friends cars. Anyways I'm back to work on the legacy.

The move went well but my new neighbors (old peeps) don't seem to like us. She wrote a letter claiming shes videotaping us and thinks were doing illegal shit cause we have many cars that comes in and go. She said she wrote all the plates that comes to the house and turn it in to the police. She said I'm running a business and told the city about it dadadadada...... Can't even work on our cars without being harrassed. :smt013

yes. When you jack up the car the eibach coils will sag the suspension like the factory strut/spring, while the ksport holds it up.

Have you been able to tell a big difference between the eibachs and the ksports?
I haven't been able to drive it with the ksport (ony when I moved it from the old house to the new house). I turboed it but f@cked it up and now redoing the pipings. I can tell you that the eibachs rode really smooth and handled great.

My friend and I got a parts car (95 legacy wagon) and it had wrx seats also for a wagon. He wanted the wrx seats for his bd so it looks like I'll be sticking with the rs seats for my bd gt and use the one from the wagon to my outback. To install the rear bumper, its a little bit harder BUT you can install the rear lip. If you have a sedan get the gt sedan rear lip and wagon get the wagon gt rear lip. Its pretty easy, its basically have a dimple on where to mount it so you know where to drill and it also uses some of the bumper mounting point already so yup, simple.

The skirt is a little bit harder if you want to install it right. I suggest if you find one off picknpull or your buying it from someone who removed it from they're car to get a measuring tape. Measure where all the holes are and how far up/down. Make sure to get all the clips and the screws (underneath) for it. After that its basically just drilling holes and using the clips that comes with it.

Yeah I love concave wheels! Its a little hard to run them on our cars though. Now if you have a 240sx thats not a problem lol. It'll look good, I like em cause they remind me of the snowflakes that comes stock for the gt's. Have you seen the new one thats coming out next year? XXR 535 i think

For the side clips, we used a flat head and just wiggle the clips out. its easier if the male plastic clip is on the female plastic clip when removing it with a flat head. They come out easier and faster. You'll know what I mean when you do it.

If you take the rear lip, make sure to grab all the fastener for it. You're gonna need a heavy duty screw driver(flat face nor the pointy one) to take out some of the screws on the rear lip.

As for the side, grab all the clips and bottom screw. Then measure where all the holes are located on both sides so that way it'll be a piece of cake when you install it.

Self tapping screws and double sided tape also works great! I try to make as oem as possible

No problem. Just paint them black unless you want it color match with the rest of the body but they usually trim black anyways.

For the peeps don't know, we got a legacy wagon parts car and I swapped carpet with it since it didn't have holes nor burnt mark like my old one (stereo wiring). Also bought a SUS floor mats from picknpull.

I got it from venus. I was very lucky to stop by right after he got his shipment. He's very hard to deal with (rude, bad customer service, parts all over the place) but i got him on a good day and he brought out the jdm trunk and i was like :smt007 . Sometimes you just gotta deal with the devil to get cheap parts lol

So as I'm making the custom downpipe, I fabbed up some rear K bar. Unlike the fender brace I made, I made it as bolt on as possible using existing mounting holes. Just in case someone might be interested in the near future.

True. Even when I had the stock seats, I rarely used it. I prefer to have my lil girl in the middle for safety.
Its a trade off of having an RS seat. The wrx seats have the small middle pass through but doesn't match the opening of the stock legacy pass through. The stock leather seats are very heavy though. Looked at my welder and figured I don't have a pass through so got down and made one :lol:

I'll use my outback if I need to haul things :grin:

Should of jumped on it when I offered it to you. Now I can't find/get a hold of the seller :cry: . I was planning to get a set for my outback since it goes so well with the GT wagon rear bumper.

I've been lazy to update this but its smog time so i have to return it back to stock. I did got a turbo subframe and might have to notch it to fit the n/a header :smt013

Thank you. Its hard to capture the color because the car is a dark green so it always look black unless the light hits it.

Thanks. There's alot of groups in the bay but more on the wrx/sti's. People don't really know the legacy's besides the 05-09 turbo models. It gets overlooked which is cool for me lol. There's some norcal members on here but I think getting together is sorta hard because of eveyones schedule and locations. I can sell the taillights if you want but its not perfect. I'll take pic of it and send it to you to see if your interested. I'll see if i can do it tomorrow.

Finally passed smog but barely. I have a walbro 255 fuel pump on it and it barely pass on idle. Oh well, don't have to deal with it for another 2 years. I keep getting p0136 also (rear o2 sensor not communicating), keep erasing the code and on the due date for smog it didn't show up. Then it just pop out about 200 miles after when I went to pick up a friend from sacramento airport.

Which means I can put the turbo back in BUT not until I have the outback running so I can have a DD. I also picked up a 2.5 wrx shortblock and I think I'm going to build that and use the motor from this car and put it on the outback.

I didn't like the xxr center caps cause they pop out too much. Luckily I have xtra center caps from my old rota setup and they seem to fit the xxr's. I like them better since they are flat. So sprayed them with plasidip and pop em on

So my friends (the other green legacy) last day to drive was yesterday (sunday). Don't ask why, just that he fucked up :smt011 . Anyways we were saving a trip to monterey for summer and taking a drive there but since it was his last day yesterday, we just had to go just in case we couldn't go there over the summer.
