I'm not cutting a RFRB grill to fit the lights. Any grill used with the lights has be cut between the mounting points. And go update your thread already....

Not cutting an RFRB grille is a good move. I think the RFRB grille will give your front end a cleaner look. My vote is in favor of losing the lights in favor of the grille.

Instead of removing them, why not just move the lights to below beside the number plate? I still haven't seen a pic with them on though, so if you don't use them that often I guess removing them isn't bad.

I originally was thinking about putting the lights by the number plate. I will see about getting a pic with them on later today or tonight. My friend that helped with the brackets said "why do you want to take them off? So you can look like every other soccer mom on the road?" I had to laugh at that one.

Ahhh! No worries! From my research, with the Chilton and my multimeter, the factory fog switch is a momentary type and requires using the factory relay as well... otherwise the component (foglight) would only be on when holding the button in!

Yeah. I had a friend do most of the wiring. For the fogs you will need a relay. We used relays he had laying around.

I think its an Outback thing. I haven't looked closely at the GT wagons.

While I was at the pick n pull last weekend I found a blue LSi wagon with painted door handles and side moldings. I want to go back this weekend and snag that stuff. The other thing planned of now is tint. Before I do that I want to pull the door cards and clean the slide pad things for the windows. Other than that, my brother finishes grad school today so when he moves home next week I lose my spot in the garage to his STI. But when he goes to beach to work this summer I may get a key to the beast!

Tint looks so sexy on our wagons. Word to the wise, I went 20% rear, 35% front. If I had to do it again, I'd still go 35% front, but I'd drop down to 35% in the rear as well. I dunno what MDs tint laws are, but I get a little nervous every time I pass a cop, and it sucks backing up at night.

I'm not 100% sure it will work. I am going to try it then post my results. I got my hands on some foam that I am going to try to put on the door cards. It may be too thick.

Thanks. The funny thing is that during the day you can barely see the LED city lights. When its darker, like in that pic, or night or evening they look fantastic. I got the idea after seeing Hinyo's LED city lights.

Today I recovered the door card inserts with the help of a friend. He did the first two. I tried the 3rd and screwed it up twice. He ended up finishing them because we were running out of vinyl and didn't want to make another trip out. We had already run out of adhesive and had to get more. While I had the door cards off and the inserts out I cleaned up the door cards. I also took my underseat subs and cranked the bass all the way up on them.

If you, or anyone else decides to do this I recommend CRC spray adhesive. Worked much better than the 3M stuff I had bought. Two inserts were done with an entire can of 3M. Two inserts with the CRC and I have a good bit of it left.

Got and installed 04 wrx back seats today. It was a pain in the ass, but so worth it. Pics tomorrow. I also repainted my mesh grill, and hopefully fixed my cruise control. I will test that later this week.

The bottom half does not flip up. So the will not go flat anymore. The back part does fold down. I have the beater 00 Outback to haul stuff in.

So today I noticed 3 of my recovered door card are having the vinyl come un-glued. I have a plan that I may try that involves a junkyard trip to get more door card inserts. I also noticed one of the Hellas behing my grill has a cracked lens. I knew it was cracked, but now the lens is pretty much split in half. Its still in place. I may just remove them altogether or not worry about it. The third option with those is I found a seller on ebay that makes lexan replacement lenses.

Yesterday I went with a friend to get parts for his 90 Toyota Pickup. We stopped at Nagano Inc in Manassas Park, VA. All I can say about that place is WOW! They have a warehouse full of JDM stuff for Subarus, Nissians, Toyotas, and Hondas. They currently have a GF8 half cut, BG5/BD5 nose cut, BE5/BH5 nose cut (type A/C), about 25 JDM EJ20s with transmissions, all kinds of seats, and wheels. It was like being a kid in a candy store.

Anyways, I got bored while my friend was working on the truck so I did this:

Here is an update. Last night I went to a friends to try to install the axle back exhaust. Turns out my exhaust is so rusted that even a torch couldn't get the nuts and bolts on it to break lose. Its not leaking, but at this point we decided not to mess with it and break anything. We also started on the JDM power mode switch from a 3rd gen, but we could not get it to look clean like it was meant to be in a 2nd gen, so we again decided to scrap that project for now. On the plus side I did get a pic of my car at night with all the lights on. Oh and he gave me another Hella 500, so I now have a spare.

We tried a few times. No easy way to get to it, so we decided to leave it. All the axle back would do is be louder. I can live without it.

So my project for Sunday was a small but time consuming one. I wanted to make the JDM power/hold switch look clean in my car. This is proving to be a little harder than I thought since it came from a BE/BH. I started with a holder thing for the center console I took out of my car a while back. I cut an opening for the wiring harness to come through and test fitted the switch:

Once I decided I like that placement I decided to make a cover to try and make the whole thing look more clean. I started with a cardboard template, which I didn't take picture of. Then moved on to a piece of plastic I cut out of my grill when installing the Hella 500s:

All in all, for using a Dremel for the cutting it turned out OK. I am going to redo it with something easier to work with, like gravoply. I hope to get it to my liking and get it wired in soon.

Tried that already. The switch is a different size. It also clips in being pushed up into the shifter trim on a 3rd gen, as where the 2nd gen switches mount being down.

It was a really thin, but strong rubber mat of some sort my friend had. I will have to ask him exactly what it is. I know it was used on Rubie_25GT's strut/spring install. It may say what it is in his thread.

So today I took delivery of a 2009 3.0R Limited.

Plans are to keep it stock and drive it. I will probably tint the windows come spring. The wagon is still here. It is becoming the family's spare car. A few things will come off it.

It needs a few things here and there cleaned up. It also needs a 60K service. So far I love everything about it. I think it gets better MPG than my 98. It should be even better with a new air filter and spark plugs.

Well, yesterday into last night my friend helped me make and install a new cat back exhaust for the wagon. The stock muffler had started to leak and rattle. We took the stock mid pipe and welded it to an oem muffler from an 05 WRX. I don't have any final pics or a video yet as it was around midnight when we finished. Here are a few pics of him welding.

Yeah, one harness controls one sub. There is a good amount of gain with it. I just don't know if I want to keep since I don't drive this car that often anymore.

Added an emblem to the grill. The emblem is from a 4th gen. It has the chrome trim ring removed.

Finally took a picture of the exhaust. Its an 05 WRX axleback welded to the stock midpipe. Please excuse the dirty car.

I also polished the headlights on it in preparation for washing and waxing it tomorrow when its 40 degrees out.

So its been an interesting week with the wagon. On Tuesday when it was 4 degrees the wagon would not start. It would turn over. Turns out water in the fuel had frozen in the fuel lines. On Thursday I put some HEET in the gas tank and it started about 10 mins later. Since then it would jump up to 2000-2500 rpm when starting. That brings me up to today. I went up to Rubie_25GT's house to help him with his car and the CEL came on in the wagon. P1507 for the idle air control valve. I was not able to do anything with it today but I cleared the code to drive home. So hopefully soon I will the IACV gasket I ordered so I can take the valve off and clean it. I am hoping that will solve the problem and save me some money on not buying a new IACV.

Last night with the help of a friend we took off the IACV and cleaned it. It was so gunked up it would not turn. Now its good. Also replaced the PCV. Car runs like a champ.

Nah, it needs to stay around and work. I still drive it about once a week. We kept it over the 3rd gen with only 104K miles. That car was a POS. My grandparents had bought it new in 2000 and crashed it at least 4 times that we know of. While they had someone put sugar in the gas. SOA stepped in when 3 dealers could not figure out the issue and replaced most of the fuel system for free. That was right after we bought if from my grandparents with around 10k miles on it. My mom got hit twice and hit a deer with it. Another fuel pump failed on it around 80K miles. Oh and the sunroof would not close all the way. In the end, we put 94k miles on it and sold it for what we paid for it from my grandparents. Oh and it was a PA car then a MD car, so Robin would not have wanted to see the under body....

I was not able to do anything with it today but I cleared the code to drive home. So hopefully soon I will the IACV gasket I ordered so I can take the valve off and clean it. I am hoping that will solve the problem and save me some money on not buying a new IACV.

Now that its getting warmer out I am going to try some of my ideas. The plastic trim on the outside of this car is faded horrible. I am thinking about hitting the door trims, door handles, and the thing in front on the rear wheels with plasti-dip. I am thinking the splash guards, roof rack, and the lip on the front bumper may get hit with bed-liner. Still trying to figure out exactly what I am doing.

Waxed the wagon this morning. It got a coat of cleaner wax then a coat of Collinite 476. You can see how beat up the paint actually is. My cheap Ryobi buffer starting making some weird noises so it may be time to upgrade.

Its good stuff. I bought it on Thom's recommendation. I have used it on my brother's STI and my mom's TSX in addition to my Legacys. The paint on this car is pretty rough. I did wonders on my 09 and my brother's STI. He has driven it on cross country trips a few times but it looked great after one coat. Now I need a decent buffer.

So the wagon has started making an odd noise coming from the right rear of the car. I first noticed it on the highway but now it seems most common when pulling away after stopping. It almost sounds like a vibrating speaker or maybe a grinding noise. I jacked up that corner of the car and there is no play in the hub assembly up and down or left to right. That makes me think it is not a wheel bearing. I have looked around inside the car to make sure there are no loose panels. Any other ideas out there? Maybe the axle? It is not a constant noise.

I was thinking that. The brakes are from an 04 WRX and who knows how many miles it had before I put them on here. It does sound like that one drags a bit when I first driving the car after it sits a day or two. I try to drive it at least once a week.

It kinda sounds like the brakes to me. My front pass is starting to drag. when I stop the steering wheel pulls back and forth a little and I just replaced the other side for doing the same thing. It would randomly stick and it drag the car around and it killed my gas mileage.

Its weird. The gas mileage seems fine. I checked to see if the exhaust was hitting somewhere and could not see any signs of that. Rubie_25GT was in the car the other day when it made the sounds he thinks something is coming loose and making a tapping noise. I need to have time to get under the car.

Well, Saturday I am taking the wagon to my friend's shop to get the left rear wheel bearing replaced. They do some good work from what I have heard. And they are across the street from MD JDM Motors, so I may stroll over there. Also, one of the red LEDs I put in the gauge cluster two years ago has decent to work half the time so I need to look into that. I also bought some projector cree LEDs for the reverse lights. I am impressed with those so far. Granted they went in the car yesterday. I got those off Ebay for $7. Oh, I also have a new badge I may put on the mesh grille.

Just got home from my friend's shop. Turns out the issue is not a wheel bearing. Its the rear diff making noise. They suggested changing the fluid to see if it helps.

So I changed the fluid yesterday evening. Drove the car last night and it still makes the sound. Its mainly at 65mph. Above or below that it goes away. Any ideas guys? I hope the car is still safe to drive. It did make some odd sounds in my friend's neighborhood last night over bumps. Like tired/worn bushing sounds at the rear. I am going to try to figure that out too.

Well I have come to the conclusion the wagon is pissed I bought the 3.0R. Since then the fuel lines froze over the winter and the IACV needed to be cleaned. On to what it needs now:

1. Rear diff/Inner CV joints are making noise. Very similar to this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OKWvWFCON2k
2. Driver's door window is acting like a VW. It goes all the way down on auto then makes a clicking sound the window moves up and down about 1/8 inch. Then when I push up on the switch nothing happens. If I push down then up the window goes up.
3. Alternator is getting louder.
4. Inspect rear sway bar bushings. They might be worn.
5. Once the maintenance is done I need to wire the power mode switch back in.

Today was a fun day. Got started early when I went to a friend's house and changed the rear axles. While it made a slight improvement, the wagon does need a new rear diff. That means it will be upgraded to a LSD when I can find one. After that I met up with Rubie_25GT and went to a Legacy meet in Harrisburg, PA.

Yeah, once in a while you can find good stuff. I once found a left side JDM projector headlight. Rubie_25GT found a wrx Perrin 22mm rear sway bar with the stout mounts and bushings and a fresh OEM alternator. His alternator then crapped out about 2 months later. Its all luck of the draw.

Thanks. Main bit of rust was taken car of a while back. It was a spot on the driver's rear door. Luckily I found an Outback the same color at a pick and pull which donated its door to my car.

Today I bought a new rear differential for the wagon. Its out of an 09 2.5I and has 16,000 miles on. Now I just have to wait for it to be shipped to me.

This came today. The plan is to go to my friend's house Saturday and remove the rear cross-member from the 09 Legacy it came from. Then the diff will get installed in the wagon and filled with fresh Royal Purple 75W90.

If you have access to a good set of ramps to back the rear wheels up on you can swap out the rear diff no problem. While you're in there throw the Unabombers Sexy Rearend. Great build thread by the way 98legwag.

Went down to my friend's house today and installed the new rear diff in the wagon. It drives smoother and is quiet again. The differential came out a 2009 Legacy 2.5i with a 4eat that had 16,000 miles on it. I filled it with 75w90 Royal Purple. My brother also came by and he installed Hawk street pads on the rear of his Jetta and replaced the warn out brake master cylinder.

WPEC. is that at low speed cornering? can be a sign of center diff failing or failure... something to try is doing figure 8's in a parking lot aggressively... and it can work itself out. if you have an auto look into duty C solenoid failure.

Sounds like it might be torque bind. You should look into that.

Well, I pressure washed the wagon today. Followed that up with a coat of Meguiars carnuba cleaner wax then a coat of Collinite 476. Even though this car is 16 years old and I don't think the previous owner ever waxed it, I am amazed how a few coats of wax make it shine. I didn't take any pictures though.

Well, I figured since I spent money on some fun stuff for the 3.0R I should spend money on replacing worn out parts on this turd. I got tired of hearing the alternator whine like a cranky child. I also noticed when I drove it tonight the headlights seem dimmer than normal. I bought a re-manufactured OEM alternator from subarugenuineparts.com. It actually cost less than re-manufactured Denso and Bosch alternators from rockauto.com.

Since I stole the interior LEDs from this for the 09 I finally ordered another set for this car. Also installed the new alternator last weekend. And here is a quick photo I took at work this morning.

Hi there, long story short, I was lucky on used alternator from Crazy ray's since I spent a month in couple yards last summer.
A re-manued one from advance auto parts was a crap I can't trust because it had howling noise even on their bench test.

Its done. It makes a nice improvement. Braking is much more linear now. However, it helped point out how old and tired the BMC is after 173,XXX miles. I will probably replace that sooner rather than later. Here it is before the shaft and cup were put on and everything else was put back.

Agreed. I think it made more of a difference on my 3.0R. But that could be due to a number of factors, including that it has 100,000 less miles.

I bought them from superbrightleds.com. I cannot remember which exact led they are. I can tell you they are the tag lights now on the 3.0R and they are stupidly bright for that purpose.

So for the 2nd winter in a row my wagon won't start when its super cold out. Both times it cranks but won't start. The starter is about 4-5 years old. The battery is about two years old. I am thinking its a fuel issue. Would a fuel pump not work when its really cold out? Its about 12 degrees right now. It started yesterday, but it did take a while. It was slightly warmer yesterday.

Hmm, thinking about this more. The spark plugs in the car have been in there at least 20k miles and they are NGK V Powers. Looks like its time for them to get replaced.

That is what I ordered last night. Should be here tomorrow. I still want to know why it won't start when its around 10 degrees or colder. One friend of mine suggested that when the air the cold the car is struggling to get the air/fuel ratio right.

All I know is both times its been in the driveway blocking in the 3.0R. I sure am tired of pushing the wagon when its 5 degrees outside.

So for poops and giggles I swapped the stock coil back on, in the snow mind you, and it started right up. I am not sure if it was the coil or the connection going to it.

Spark plugs arrived yesterday. I will change them hopefully this weekend. I also noticed the right rear tire was low. It had 22 psi. While putting air in I found out why. The valve stem leaks when its moved the slightest bit. Its good thing a friend owns a shop, I will be there Saturday morning for him to replace that valve stem and maybe the other three.

The wagon got fresh NGK Iridium IX spark plugs tonight. I noticed the air filter was looking pretty dirty now. Tomorrow it will get a new brake master cylinder and brake fluid along with a new air filter I picked up. Possibly new coolant. My Pepboys didn't have any Peak Global Lifetime, which is what people seem to like other than OEM coolant. I will check Napa and Advance Auto Parts in the morning. The battery tie down is looking rough so I may paint that tomorrow too.

Yesterday the new brake master cylinder went it along with all new fluid. After change it there was no difference in how the pedal felt. But after driving it a bit the pedal started to feel better. It started to firm up and has less travel now. My friend's dad said the seals in the master cylinder make take a little to time full seat and break in. Does anyone know if there is any truth to this?

While working on the car we noticed the right front caliper may not be working at 100%. There was a small bit of the rotor that was not being contacted by the pad near the lip of the rotor. We also noticed the inner CV boot on the passenger side front axle is completely split. Just what I want. To spend more money on this car instead of buying wheels and tires for the 3.0R.

Front and rear Stop Tech street pads and the front calipers arrived today. The rotors and rear calipers should arrive tomorrow. The calipers will be painted prior to install. The 3.0R will get work done this weekend before this car since I daily the 3.0R.

The new brakes went on today/tonight. The wagon finally stops like it should again. I only took it out to bed in the pads and rotors, but its a HUGE improvement. However, the parking brake shoes are shot. One actually came apart while we were replacing the rear rotors. Looks like I have to spend more money on this pile.

The wagon got waxed today. One coat cleaner wax, one coat Mother's Reflections Car Wax, and one coat Mother's Reflections Top Coat. The depth of color is great. Its nice and shiny. Now if only the paint itself wasn't crap.

Yesterday I went to my friend's house and we fixed the parking brake. All new shoes and hardware. It would have been nice if Rock Auto had sent the right shoes. We had to run out and find some parking brake shoes since Rock Auto accidentally sent me brake shoes for a late 90s Dodge/Plymouth/Chrysler minivan. Once we got done that we figured out the relay for my Hella 500s had failed. Those are working again. We also installed a set of JDM side markers complements of Rubie_25GT. Don't mind the dirty car.


After that we went up to my friend's brother's house and met up with Rubie_25GT and kcowles to fix an issue with her wagon. But that is her story to tell.

Give you guys props on doing buffing/waxing. Hate to do it so thats why I paint mine satin. Maybe I'm just lazy but then again the satin finish is also hard to maintain. Looks good
