View Full Version : Smoking after JDM swap because of HG

The head gasket went 6? years ago, and I finished swapping the JDM today(it wasn't bought THAT long ago), and it seems to be running fine. It was smoking up a storm for a bit, and I THINK it was because of left over nastiness in the pipes from when the HG had gone, and I'd driven it for a bit.

The smoke was coming out from the gaskets past the catalytic converter, and there was some blackish water dripping from several points, including the tailpipe. It didn't feel particularly oily. Fairly heavy smoke had been coming out of the joint past the 2nd? converter. There was significant corrosion there, so I'll need a new donut gasket and bolts (springs are still good).

The smoking had reduced, and after idling it for 1/2hr+ it completely stopped smoking. I'd disconnect it as above, so no smoke was going through the pipe to create more dripping.

Are JDMs known for smoking initially, and will anything in the back part of the pipe likely smoke its way out?

My ej20g swap smoked HEAVILY when I first ran it. I was using injectors that were too big for my ecu, and when I swapped in the appropriate ecu, and drove it for a bit, the smoking went away.

Is the color of your smoke grayish white? The blackish fluid sounds like sooty gas to me. If there aren't any unusual noises from the powertrain I personally would just drive it around for a bit to let the ECU learn and to hopefully clear out any residual crap in your exhaust.

The sticker on it says it had about 76k km (47k mi) on it, and there was a ton of oil/soot on the spark plugs. The smoke was grayish/white rather than blue.

Drive it is!
