Ive decided not to sell my car and not to put new head gaskets in again so i want to do a swap engine and transmition
I have a 1998 subaru leagacy outback bg fully loaded except leather and power with the 2.5l ej and the 4at trans, and i want to do a engine swap and a trans swap but i think i can get both as a pair but if not what are a few things to look for ? I dont want to buy off of ebay or anywhere online really i want to go to pick n pull or other salvage yards

ENGINE CONCERNS
how hard is it to swap an engine what parts are needed for the car to run? ex. ecu from other car wire harness and all that i found the conversions list deadsilvia made but im not following and ive read a few others ive picked up that any ej series block will work with any transmition for an ej block little to no modifying

Transmition concerns
what parts are needed to make a auto a five speed
I heard if you take a transmition out of like an impreza you will have to change the differentials too because the gear ratio is different

WHAT PARTS ARE NEEDED?
I know a cross member will be needed but what years will work
a radiator is needed i think i have that set
but a complete list would be nice of all the parts that i will need
AND how much of the wire harness will need to be replaced ?
Do i need to pull an ecu from a 98 what is my range of years i can use for engine, trans/model i can use, wire harness, crossmember, pedal cluster, clutch cable etc
sorry if im typing odd or not making sense its just my car has been stressing me out which now with this headgasket problem again with 202xxx its not worth keeping that engine going ill start over with a new engine preferably a 2.2 because they arent that expensive or have head gasket problems

This will be the easiest but time consuming if you really want to do this. Look around craigslist for a donor car (accident or what not). Make sure its already 5spd and the engine you want (GT/outbacks/etc.) I would look into 97-99. Then you have to remove pretty much everything off that car and transfer it to yours. Engine/transmission/rear diff/wiring harness. Its alot of work but it will save you money compare to trying to piece everything.

Best advice would be to 'Sell your car'! Hate to break it to you but if your asking about how hard to swap an engine that means you don't have the tools and experience to tackle something like this. Sell your car and use whatever you can get and buy a good running 5 spd legacy.

i have the tools and everything and my father has been a mechanic for 40+ years and and we have the experience and id rather learn more about drivetrains by doing it its just id rather keep the body i have everyother car around new york is rusted to shit and mine has minimal rust so im now thinking keeping a 2.5 just take that so i dont have to swap i found with less miles than mine for 250 with a transmission (auto) but i can get it for cheaper without the trans then i can go to pick and pull grab most of the parts i need then just go back and get the ones i need because i dont live to far away from 8 or 9 of these salvage yards

In that case, it will be the best learning experience for you.

If you buy the 2.5 engine, you should have everything you need. Your gonna buy a motor plus you have your old motor. Whatever is missing form the motor your going to buy just transfer it from your old motor.

I would suggest for you to do the headgasket while the motor is out to be sure. That way you can also see the condition of the engine inside.
