It has two BH Outbacks. Mt Airy is even worse- no 3rd gens at all!

My junkyard has no 3rd gens, and only two second gens. And that does it for Subarus. Stupid.

Also, are there any pictures of a bare Blitzen trunk underside? I'm curious about the mounting points of the spoiler.

I'll be there in 2 weeks if you want to try then. I found out today that a USDM 240sx rear bumper doesnt fit on a JDM 180sx... But it can be made to fit...

Did you get any pics of the fitment?

Here are the best of the poor quality pictures I took yesterday:

Again, I think it might look better once everything is swapped out. The window needs to be changed though. There's no going around that.

That junkyard near you may have a Legacy with the right doors.
It has two BH Outbacks. Mt Airy is even worse- no 3rd gens at all!

Yeah, Mt Airy usually only has 2nd gens. The one in Hawkins Point, I think had a 3rd gen or two last time I was there, but that was over a month ago. I don't remember if it had sedans or wagons.

dodik
07-11-2012, 09:46 AM
from those pics, the profile of the doors looks to be the same so it may only be because of hinges. If you going to get another set of doors make sure they are from sedan. I know for a fact that 2nd gen sedan/wagon windows are slightly different, and most likely 3rd gens as well. Did you try fenders on yet? Outback fenders are a bit wider than legacy so im curious if those will fit.

Are you sure? I never test fit the doors to see if they're different because June 24th, 2010 Reason posted in this thread:

Wagon and sedan doors are the same.
Nobody argued or disagreed so I took that at face value, so all of the doors I got are from wagons. But they seem to be similar enough to fit enough to open and close... We'll see when it's all put together.

If your talking about the 2nd gen, they will swap, but they are different. The differance is the wagon has a cut out for the speaker, the sedan dose not. I might just hang one of my wagon doors on my BD to make sure, but I dont think I'm wrong.

That fitment is odd! I'm thinking most of that might be corectable with hinge work/modification. Also, there is a lot of adjustment when it come to body panels. It looks like the glass is comepletly different though. Just know that changing glass in a Subaru is a pain, it not like a Toyota.

Sorry I should have clarified that, sorry. But I would wait for Robin, I think between the two of you can get the rear glass and the doors swapped. Once both doors are on things will line up better.

Um, I tried to change out the bumper, but the bolts at each side just keep spinning but don't actually come out. How do I get them out?

Dremel or hacksaw. The bolts are in a black plastic trapezoid. If the trapezoid is cracked at all or broken the bolt will spin inside of it.

Crap, I'm about a week from changing the suspension on the Outback when I come across this (https://sl-i.net/FORUM/viewtopic.php?p=295000#p295000). How bad will it be if I only change out the struts/springs? What all do I need to change the Outback to a Legacy? I thought I had everything.

After going through the parts I do have, I realized that I still don't have the correct backing plate for the rear 2pots......crap.

nothing dude, i;ve run legacy struts w/ outback springs for a couple years with no issues. Now for about a year i've been using Ohlins PCV coilovers designed for legacy only thing that needed work were bump stops had to cut them in half.

The "proper" way to lower is to remove the front and rear subframe spacers that give the outback another 1"+ of ground clearance via a body lift. Technically, removing them allows better angles in the driveline but there's enough slack in the drivetrain that in real-world driving I don't think many people will be too concerned with.

MRLancaster
07-20-2012, 05:57 AM
So would removing the spacers lower it one more 1"? I just don't feel like having to swap out the steering rack and everything else. If you could JUST remove the subframe spacers then I would do it, but I don't think you can do JUST those.

dodik
07-20-2012, 09:28 AM
once you remove spacers most likely you wont be able to fit stock size tire, like Ben said for real world driving dont bother.

Rear bumper on and looking good.... kinda. The exhaust NEEDS to be changed now. Pictures to come within a couple days.

Work to be done tomorrow:

1) Front end (headlights, fenders, hood, grille, bumper)
2) Brakes (front 4 pots/ brake lines. I don't have everything needed for rear 2 pots yet)
3) Suspension (control arms, underbody brace, struts/springs, and other stuff from a D model)
4) Doors (to include glass in rear doors)
5) Side skirt fitment test
6) Properly fit/mount rear wiper module
7) Wheels/tires
8) Finally get around to dealing with the rear seat

So... not too busy.

Well, as some of you know by now, the doors are a no-go. The US models are just too thick and the thinner Japanese doors don't fit. The body shapes are just way too different. I will have to get regular US Legacy doors. The fenders can fit if the center area is rolled just slightly.

Pictures to come soon. I just have to get them on the computer.

I know what your standards are for parts and even after buffing the headlights, these don't meet your standards. They have some small marks in the plastic. I'll probably hold onto them so I can restore everything if I ever sell the car.

As promised, her are some pictures (click on thumbs for full-size):

This is the difference between the US rear bumper and the Japanese one:
http://krenicki.com/ForumPictures/Vehicles/2002-BEE-Blitzen/th_IMG_9945_zpsxzahetgb.jpg (http://s1340.photobucket.com/user/rkrenickisli/media/Car%20Galleries/2002%20BEE%20Blitzen/IMG_9945_zpsxzahetgb.jpg.html) http://krenicki.com/ForumPictures/Vehicles/2002-BEE-Blitzen/th_IMG_9950_zps5nhaq0ik.jpg (http://s1340.photobucket.com/user/rkrenickisli/media/Car%20Galleries/2002%20BEE%20Blitzen/IMG_9950_zps5nhaq0ik.jpg.html)

The car lost about 9 inches in length between the front and rear bumper exchanges. Here's why:
http://krenicki.com/ForumPictures/Vehicles/2002-BEE-Blitzen/th_IMG_9947_zpsprssumwe.jpg (http://s1340.photobucket.com/user/rkrenickisli/media/Car%20Galleries/2002%20BEE%20Blitzen/IMG_9947_zpsprssumwe.jpg.html) http://krenicki.com/ForumPictures/Vehicles/2002-BEE-Blitzen/th_IMG_9948_zpskglhkho8.jpg (http://s1340.photobucket.com/user/rkrenickisli/media/Car%20Galleries/2002%20BEE%20Blitzen/IMG_9948_zpskglhkho8.jpg.html)

That thing won't fit under the Japanese bumper.

Then we did suspension/wheels/tires. Here's a before picture (both cars are flat on the ground. There are no jacks or stands being used):
http://krenicki.com/ForumPictures/Vehicles/2002-BEE-Blitzen/th_IMG_9954_zpsbzfovth5.jpg (http://s1340.photobucket.com/user/rkrenickisli/media/Car%20Galleries/2002%20BEE%20Blitzen/IMG_9954_zpsbzfovth5.jpg.html)

That was ridiculous. Here's partly why:
http://krenicki.com/ForumPictures/Vehicles/2002-BEE-Blitzen/th_IMG_9958_zpsyminybke.jpg (http://s1340.photobucket.com/user/rkrenickisli/media/Car%20Galleries/2002%20BEE%20Blitzen/IMG_9958_zpsyminybke.jpg.html) http://krenicki.com/ForumPictures/Vehicles/2002-BEE-Blitzen/th_IMG_9967_zpsddoscook.jpg (http://s1340.photobucket.com/user/rkrenickisli/media/Car%20Galleries/2002%20BEE%20Blitzen/IMG_9967_zpsddoscook.jpg.html)

These are the spacers people keep mentioning when lowering Outbacks:
http://krenicki.com/ForumPictures/Vehicles/2002-BEE-Blitzen/th_IMG_9961_zpseb97vyuu.jpg (http://s1340.photobucket.com/user/rkrenickisli/media/Car%20Galleries/2002%20BEE%20Blitzen/IMG_9961_zpseb97vyuu.jpg.html) http://krenicki.com/ForumPictures/Vehicles/2002-BEE-Blitzen/th_IMG_9962_zpsdls6smlw.jpg (http://s1340.photobucket.com/user/rkrenickisli/media/Car%20Galleries/2002%20BEE%20Blitzen/IMG_9962_zpsdls6smlw.jpg.html)

We left the spacers in. Then we put on the wheels after the suspension was in place. Here's the final look (for that day):
http://krenicki.com/ForumPictures/Vehicles/2002-BEE-Blitzen/th_IMG_9970_zpsdvhxebza.jpg (http://s1340.photobucket.com/user/rkrenickisli/media/Car%20Galleries/2002%20BEE%20Blitzen/IMG_9970_zpsdvhxebza.jpg.html) http://krenicki.com/ForumPictures/Vehicles/2002-BEE-Blitzen/th_IMG_9976_zpsmjcyg2ah.jpg (http://s1340.photobucket.com/user/rkrenickisli/media/Car%20Galleries/2002%20BEE%20Blitzen/IMG_9976_zpsmjcyg2ah.jpg.html)

It's actually LOWER than the S401! I think the smaller wheels/tires on the Legacy (I'm no longer calling it an Outback) have something to do with it, but it's an inch and a half lower in the front and 3/4 an inch in the rear. Crazy.

I've already changed the front end as well. I still have to take pictures of that. I'll post them after I do.

The wheels are Blitzen MY '00-'03. The "05 model had horrific wheels and the '06 Blitzen has the best looking, but next to impossible to find.

I used a Japanese trunk, but since I swapped in the US wiring harness I figure that the Japanese taillights work with the US trunk as well. That, and the fact a LOT of people have done the change with no reported problems.

Nope. The front bumper I have on is temporary. I didn't want to put on the Blitzen bumper on until it's ready for painting. I think it would look stupid with all different color parts.
It won't go in for paint until mid~late October.

What are you planning to use those for? Can you hardwire any of it? You can get relays from RadioShack, but their quick connectors are pretty low grade. If you really need something specific, I think the place I work at has an account at an industrial electrical supplier that could get you certain connectors. I can't guarantee anything though because I've never looked through the catalogue.

You could also get connectors shipped from Japan?

Found the battery charger for the camera! I'll be a lot better about taking pictures now.

Also, I've been driving it for the past couple days and I'm not sure I like the ride too much. I know the car is way too lowered when I can take street imperfections at higher speeds in the Impreza STi and the S401 than I can in this Legacy. It may have something to do with taking struts/springs out of a BH5 and putting them into a BEE, but I don't know enough to be able to determine that. At any rate, it's fine for the track now, but it sucks on the street.

http://krenicki.com/ForumPictures/Vehicles/2002-BEE-Blitzen/th_DSCF3170_zpsupz8zh8p.jpg (http://s1340.photobucket.com/user/rkrenickisli/media/Car%20Galleries/2002%20BEE%20Blitzen/DSCF3170_zpsupz8zh8p.jpg.html)

I thought the horns were way too visible so I krylon painted them. Here's what it looks like now:
http://krenicki.com/ForumPictures/Vehicles/2002-BEE-Blitzen/th_DSCF3178_zpszovfldya.jpg (http://s1340.photobucket.com/user/rkrenickisli/media/Car%20Galleries/2002%20BEE%20Blitzen/DSCF3178_zpszovfldya.jpg.html)

The bumper isn't fastened on by very much because it's temporary, so it isn't very snug to the rest of the body.

Finally, to make the headlights plug-and-play, I fabricated a wiring harness to connect the headlight housing to the car's connector:
http://krenicki.com/ForumPictures/Vehicles/2002-BEE-Blitzen/th_DSCF3172_zps8yjx496c.jpg (http://s1340.photobucket.com/user/rkrenickisli/media/Car%20Galleries/2002%20BEE%20Blitzen/DSCF3172_zps8yjx496c.jpg.html) http://krenicki.com/ForumPictures/Vehicles/2002-BEE-Blitzen/th_DSCF3173_zpsfd6wj0cq.jpg (http://s1340.photobucket.com/user/rkrenickisli/media/Car%20Galleries/2002%20BEE%20Blitzen/DSCF3173_zpsfd6wj0cq.jpg.html) http://krenicki.com/ForumPictures/Vehicles/2002-BEE-Blitzen/th_DSCF3175_zpsbg5jemdv.jpg (http://s1340.photobucket.com/user/rkrenickisli/media/Car%20Galleries/2002%20BEE%20Blitzen/DSCF3175_zpsbg5jemdv.jpg.html)

Unfortunately, I had to tape the ends connecting into the car's end because I never could find a place that sold connectors. Oh well, it works so who cares.

I was just about to say how I liked the engine cover on the left better despite it being USDM, then I realized I read your caption wrong, and it was actually the JDM cover.

I guess that goes to show that I legitimately like the Japanese parts better, and not just because it's a "you always want what you can't have" kind of deal.

Updated first post to reflect current configuration.

It looks like just a few things left. Big things remaining:
1) rear brakes
2) rear wiper (mounted and wired)
3) paint (then I can put on all the badges, stickers, rain/wind guards)
4) instrument cluster (I have something special planned for this)

my thoughts after scanning this thread.
- awesome work and ambition so far!. nice hookup on parts/imports. id love to hear the story on the S401 sometime...
- that is fucking weird about the chassis differences, width of doors and glass and seats etc. i never would have anticipated that (well maybe the glass shape for the rear doors but not everything else). i can say that i wasnt surprised to see the outback doors sticking out further, but thats just because they have the lower plastic paneling on the outside. i bet the usdm GT has the same shape doors as the JDM
- seems the only benefit of this H6 over an 03-04 GT is the auto climate and the H6... thats why i got the GT wagon, it has all the niceties and i'll just do a turbo swap eventually. and its a 5spd. (no VDC, but that was auto anyways. i might do a 6spd in mine, so DCCD > VDC).
- if you want the suspension to have accurate geometry, you really gotta pull the spacers out. your control arms are different (well the rear mounts), the front and rear crossmembers, the driveline support, and the transmission mount. maybe more, if im forgetting anything.
- just got in my HIDs and dark gauge cluster today, for my 03 GT wagon. If you find a good harness pigtail, please let me know. i dont want to have to try and source one from japan/europe just to make a nice patch harness (keeping the stock connectors on the car and the HIDs)
- let me know what you end up doing about the cluster, i havent had any luck searching the net for wiring help.

You must have missed a few things...
-Doors WILL NOT work from ANY USDM car. We looked at a GT and L and they are competently different "B" pillars. So, you could change out the "B" pillar but then you would also need to do the same to the "A" pillar and fix the QT. Will not work. This I know fist hand. Has nothing to do with OB of none OB doors.
-The H6 and VDC is pretty cool! I had a GT BH 5 speed and this car was way faster! I did like my 5 speed, but I think the power of the H6 would have made up for it.
-We looked into the spacer thing and talked to a guy at the meet in RI that took them out and he said there are a lot more problems when you do that. The only problem right now is camber. If the spacers are pulled there are more. Yamazaki would remember better then I on that one.

I have no idea how hes doing his cluster... haha...

I really like the setup he has on this car! It's fun, but traffic friendly. It's comfy, but sporty. It's auto, but has balls. This car would kick the crap out of my BH GT and even with my 5 speed! I'm still thinking of maybe doing a H6 in my BD some day.

i'm confused what you mean about the doors. he has a USDM car... did you mean JDM? or do you mean USDM doors on a JDM car? i guess im lost

i've driven an H6, had an SVX with a 5-speed swap, and yeah it IS fast, i loved it. turbo is better IMO, at least there are more options, for cheaper. doing a built H6 is expensive. also the early 2000's H6 (EZ20R?) is kinda crappy because of the single port exhaust. less power than the EG33 isnt it? at least later (tribeca etc) the H6 went back to separated exhaust ports (3.6 liter right?) and has considerably more power. plus the asymmetrical rods. definitely more technology and interesting-ness in the more recent H6.

i dont see how removing all the spacers could make things worse. if you do it right, you've converted the chassis to the L/GT.... however i will concede there are a LOT of things to do if you choose to convert the outback to L/GT height. i think you even have to change out the rear crossmember? so yeah if you didnt do it right, then that would really fuck things up.

i dont see how

Dead91silvia

JDM doors (that he has) will NOT work on a USDM car, or the other way around. The door jams are completely different. I could stick my finger all the way through the door jam with the door closed. Outback, GT, L has no bearing on it, it's the fact that the cars are built in different country's. We looked at a JDM car (the S401) and multiple USDM cars to confirm.

As for the H6... You do know the car is his wife's right? And he has 2 other turbo cars so having this one as the commuter for his wife is perfect as it does have some power, but also does not need super and is an auto. Ether way, I understand it perfectly with what his goals are.

To do it right, it would take a ton of parts and time. It's not really needed any way. The car is low enough and all the geometry problems can be fixed with an alignment. As for wheel spacing, I think its just the fact that the body is physically wider. But yeah, there is no real need to take out the spacers. It's just really low and has a bit of camber, but it's not as bad as I thought it would be.

Ether way, I think it's a fun car for what it is. It's definitely not the S401, but it's still a kick in the paints with the wheels, tires, and suspension!

I'm sure Yamazaki can correct what ever I missed and then some... HAHA

So the best/cheapest way to mimic the jdm door look on the usdm legacy would be to remove the moldings and have a body shop weld/fill in the gap to make the side flush? Might be a waste of money but at least it would look clean

No, the doors are completely different shapes. The US doors are thicker and more curved. The Japanese doors are thinner and more flat. So when we put the Japanese doors on, they stuck out at the top and bottom, but were flush in the middle.

The closest way to mimic them (without major bodywork) is just go get regular Legacy doors. Or, if you already have regular Legacy doors, to keep them the way they are.

minor update: The wife reports that she gets much better gas milage now. She asked "Did you do something to the car? It doesn't use as much gas these days".

Lower weight and lower wind resistance will do that. Still, I'm glad to find out that it's a very noticeable difference.

I dismantled a spare Black Face Meter gauge cluster down to it's individual component pieces to discover whether or not I could do what I had planned to do regarding the speedo.

The bad news, There are too many connections and resistors in the way for me to cut out the factory speedo and insert an aftermarket digital speedo. So I am going to have a column mounted external speedo, where some cars have boost gauges.

The good news: I've fully mapped out all the wiring for the H6 BFM gauges and am ready to build a harness to connect it to the car. I also have a better understanding how all the lighting works. Fun fact: Did you know that in the 'PRND321' tree, only the 'P' and 'D' bulbs can be replaced? The rest are fixed in place.

Really? Aren't you thinking of the big aluminium faced one (http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/4245/painel1p.jpg), this is just the digital speedo in a regular BFM, looks just like a regular cluster but has a digital speedo.

Well, I don't know what you posted here (it just says "sorry, this person moved or deleted the photo"), but the aluminum one is the only one I know of. Tommy Kaira tends to do outrageous looking stuff, so I'd be surprised to see something from Tommy Kaira that looks normal. I'd assume that somebody put an overlay on the Tommy Kaira cluster (which isn't a bad idea), or modified a regular cluster to fit the Tommy Kaira one, although I don't know how they could do that. I suspect it's my first guess.

[EDIT: I just saw what you posted in the other thread. I was curious and compared it to the Tommy Kaira aluminum cluster. It appears that the aluminum is just an overlay and can be removed and should look like the one you posted. That wouldn't be a bad alternative. My problem comes when I want Mph. The speedo I'm getting can do both Kph or Mph. And it's able to be calibrated so it doesn't matter what size tire I put on. In the end, that's what I want. So I'll stick to the digital speedo on the column for now. That is, unless I find out the Tommy Kaira can also be calibrated and will do Mph.]

It looks like that, but I went back and had a look and the one with the aluminiun face is not a BFM, looks like A-C, it has a peak torque and shift light and I've even seen 2 different types. Will have to do some more looking.

I'm sure it can be calibrated, it's just a case of how easily, possibly not very.

Just wondering if the digital speedo couldn't sit in front of the gauge, between it and the plastic?

It's probably not going to match very well then. If you are putting it into an H6, then you should've got a BFM from an H6 (like a GT30 or RS30) and not a GT-B. Not just the wiring is different, the number of connectors will be different, the circuitry on the cluster is different.... etc. I'll take a picture of an example of what I mean and post it later.

I said that I mapped out the wiring for the H6 BFM (w/VDC). There are different BFM combo meters depending on the vehicle. It's less of a headache if you get the one that most closely resembles the car you are putting it in. It doesn't mean you can't do it otherwise (obviously, other people have), but that's the hard way and I suspect some functions may not work properly.

No no guys.... those are BOTH Japanese clusters (I thought that was clear when I said they were both BFM (Black Faced Meters)). One is from a GT30 (H6) and one is from a GT-B (turbo sportshift). That's the point I was trying to make: There are different Japanese clusters (more than just the pinouts. Look more carefully at the back of the cluster) so you have to be careful which one you get, so get the one that most closely resembles the car you are installing into. The US cluster looks even more different from those two, but it resembles the GT30 cluster the most so the GT30 one is what I got for my project.

I installed the aluminum control arms. It was a pain. I've never had to drill out a sheared off bolt before.

Anyway, I weighed the steel and the aluminum control arms and there isn't any weight savings that a family-size bag of chips wouldn't undo. The aluminum control arms are a lighter material, but solid. The steel control arms are of a heavier material, but hollow. They ended up being nearly the same weight.

I have pictures of the doors/fenders from the GT on, but not uploaded onto my computer yet... I'll post those up soon.

I also got the digital speedo. It won't fit behind the outer cover in front of the gauges. Oh well. It'll be a column mounted speedo. I'm very confused by the installation instructions for it, so it'll be awhile before it gets put on.

Thats good to know about the wight.... What bolt broke though?!

I want to see the doors! :smt026

Yeah, the weight diff between the aluminum and steel control arms is about 1lb or so...The change isn't for weight savings like a lot of people think; its because aluminum is a "stiffer" material (not exactly the exact engineering term) vs. steel, so the steering is more responsive. Its like the difference between riding an aluminum frame bicycle vs. a steel one, if any of you guys are into bikes...

The car doesn't really look all that terrific right now. It's a jumble of parts. I know I keep saying that I'll do it, but I swear I'll upload pictures this weekend. I have everything that makes it a Blitzen on the outside. I just haven't put on the side skirts, front bumper, or fenders yet. They won't go on until just before it goes in for paint. I'm going to try to have the fenders "massaged" to fit the US doors.

The Blitzen bumper has the same lights as the RFRB bumper. They are not the same as the Outback lights. The Outback lights are about 2X larger. (I actually had to go downstairs to check that just now)

Only that I would like the Blitzen bumper as well, but it seems that a number of sellers remove the lights prior to sale.

Is it possible to source Blitzen bumper parts straight from Subaru Japan or elsewhere? Or am I restricted to second hand shops?

Yes, that's the RFRB bumper (but it only fits the A~C type Legacys). The lights didn't come with the bumper when I got it either. I had to get them separately. You can go through the dealer (in Japan), but they ask a ridiculous amount of money for them. You can order through CIBIE (that's the maker of the lights) or get them used.

Bad news. The rear driver side tire blew out on the freeway. I put on the spare and got home to inspect the damage. Looking at the tire, I have no idea how it happened. It's shredded on the inner sidewall, but the outer sidewall and the tread are good. Anyway, it bent the Blitzen wheel. And because the car has FHI 4pot front brakes, the old Outback wheels don't fit anymore. The car is incapacitated until I can get the wheel repaired.

I considered putting the S401 up on jacks and putting those wheels on the H6, but I won't do that unless I can't find a repair place soon.

That makes no sense, unless at some time it hit a big pot hole and separated the tires side wall, but even at that, the tire is only 3-4 months old! It still might be under warranty and the shop might know of a shop that can fix the wheel.

The place I got to fix a customers 17" BMW M5 wheel for me with a crack on the inside and a bent on the outside for just under $200. Like $179 or something like that.

He didn't have them balanced, right? They might have been just so terribly unbalanced that the tires couldn't take too much of it.

They were balanced. Anyway, I had it repaired for $150. A little steep, but the repair was so good that when the tire shop put the tire on and went to balance it, it required no extra weights. The wheel repair guy said he could fix the curb rash on the one S401 wheel too. I will have to do that sometime.

Here are pics of the tire/wheel damage (notice little tread wear):

Now that the little drama of my blown tire is over, I can bring up the issue of ride harshness. There is no way a Legacy with only Bilsteins and STi pink springs should be a MUCH harsher ride than my Impreza STi. I'm stumped over what could be causing it. Any thoughts?

Also, one of the front endlinks I had snapped and I'm currently going w/out front endlinks (basically, no front swaybar). Whiteline endlinks for the turbo Legacy are on order.

That might be because of a bad wheel bearing on that hub. Did you ever take it in for an alinement after we did everything? That could have been part of the problem on all sides.

If the hub is not in perfect alinement (I'm spelling that wrong arnt I? LOL) with the ABS sensor, it will turn those lights on. not so sure about the VDC light, but I'm sure it's tided in with the ABS. That or the sensor might have something stuck in it. They are not too much of a pain to pull out and check.

The AT Temp light is a new one on me. Have you made sure the level is still good and you guys dont have a cut line some how?

They were hardly smooth. In fact, most of Northern Japan has some of the worst roads I've ever seen. Not counting the tollroads, of course.

And I've driven the RSK (BE with Bilsteins) before. It isn't that harsh. In fact, it's a bit like my Impreza. Not smooth, but it won't shatter your spine over bumps. The Outback/Legacy/Blitzen/whatever-the-hell-you-want-to-call-it is ridiculously harsh. I'm wondering what part the spacers play in all this.... that's the only difference I can think of.

As for the ride... Ben, it's crazy hard! I mean worse then my Silvia with Tokico Adjustable's set of hard with Tien springs! I dont get it, the rear felt ok (as much as I can remember) but the front was pretty damn hard.

You know... I'm wondering if the front is too low. As in, riding on the bumps stops... :smt017 Maybe a 1 inch spacer on the top would give it enough travel and not ride as had. Just an idea.

Yeah, the guy I got the doors from (l0rd) helped me with it. We also swapped on the GT fenders so it didn't look stupid with Outback fenders and GT doors.

Could it be the engine weight? I wouldn't think so with all the extra weight those twin turbos and associated parts add. And I've got an aluminum hood and lightened front end. Ultimately, it must be because it's so lowered (lower than the S401, remember?), because there isn't any other reason for it that I can think of. I never hear of regular Legacy guys having this problem, so I feel like it's got to be the spacers on the Outback.
I might try the front spacers thing, but first I'm going to go through the parts breakdown manuals and see what all the differences are. Although that may be difficult since I don't have one for the Outback...

hansvonaxion
10-06-2012, 08:16 AM
Engine weight could be a factor. Sorry I haven't been following every detail but if the rear is sitting even slightly higher than it should then weight distribution will be out, with more weight on front again. Just a thought.

Dead91silvia

I can see if my guy at Subaru can get me some of the parts brake downs for me. At least for the suspension. It could be the fact that your car is an H6 and the springs/struts are for a 2.0TT. I wouldn't think it would be too big of a difference though. Even more so with the hood and the bumper setup now.

Yamazaki
10-06-2012, 12:02 PM
Yeah, the more I think about it, the more I think it's the spacers. Anyway...

I made the appointment for painting in two weeks. The guy said rolling the fenders a bit so the doors fit won't be a problem at all. I decided to keep the engine bay black and the rest of the car will be the same dark purple as the interior leather. The guy also said to not bother with putting the side skirts or bumper on since he has to just take them off again so I guess I won't be putting the Blitzen side skirts or front bumper on before paint. They're going to strip the car down to do it right. Also...

The "VDC" and"ABS" lights don't come on anymore. The wife said they didn't come on again after that first day. The "AT oil temp" light also doesn't come on anymore. So I think the tire blowing out freaked out a lot of the electronic sensors, because everything works (I tested the ABS to make sure). Lastly...

I installed the Whiteline front endlinks. Those bad boys won't snap, they're as thick as the ZeroFourR endlinks I have in the rear. I'm getting an alignment tomorrow.

This car is coming together nicely! (I still need to mount the rear wiper though).

Dropped the car off for paint! I decided on the dark purple to match the seats. I took some pics when I dropped it off with the correct bumper attached. It looks like a clown car:

No. The US Legacy fenders were just place holders. One is actually broken and doesn't have a fastening point for the bumper. They are getting tossed. I am only having the Japanese fenders painted and installed.

They definitely fit except along the door line, where they will be getting "massaged" to the correct contour.

Damn wide American cars....

He said he'll do his best, but it won't look perfect. The doors open/close with no problem now though. I also asked about thinner side moulding and he said it shouldn't be a problem. He'll go find some different ideas and get back to me. Here's what it looks like right now:

This is where money comes in. It can cost a lot to get it done right and make it all line up and be good work to boot!I knew that was going to be a problem at the top part of the doors and the lower belt molding. Now whats gonna happen with the indents for the big USDM trim? He's not filling it with filler is he? I tell yeah what, 90% of all car guys will pick out a line that does not match up and it will bug the living hell out of you if you know it's there. "Special" is a very good term for what the US market has recieved over the years from Japanese auto makers but, the "special" that I am thinking about is a very un-politically correct, discriptive definition of the word. :/

***Back on topic: Looks really nice!! I like the Dark Blue tint to it. I think the tint and the gun metal wheels play nicely with eachother.

You cant wash it for a month though, right? Or, is my auto paint knowledge dated a bit? I was under the impression that you need to wait a few weeks (even a month) before washing for buffing out the clear coat.

You should definitely come out Sunday november 11th (tmrw) to Tutti Fruitti again because they are having a huge hurricane relief meet for victims of Sandy. This meet starts at like 6:30pm, but I am going to get there at like 4:30 pm to get a good parking spot because there will be hundreds of cars. If you took the S401 out it would be very popular.
