My 04 Non-VDC was about $11k when I bought it with just a bit over 100k on it. $10k seems to me to be the upper edge of reasonable for a normal car, nevermind one with all of these mods.

My 04 Non-VDC was about $11k when I bought it with just a bit over 100k on it. $10k seems to me to be the upper edge of reasonable for a normal car, nevermind one with all of these mods.

The problem is some people see these mods as cool, but others view mods as a sign that the car may be modified in a way that might shorten it's life. Like, I likely would have never bought a modded legacy, because who knows what it could've been through? Who knows what the previous owner might have done in an attempt to get more power? (or something along those lines). Especially if you're looking for someone who appreciates useful things like the rear wiper. I'm not saying at all that the Blitzen6 is a ricemobile or anything, but if I were in the market for a Civic, I'd buy a stock Civic over a modified one just for peace of mind. Yes, this car has a lot to appreciate (both from factory and due to the conversion), and it was done by a perfectionist, but you need to find someone who truly understands that before you get $10k for it. They either need to appreciate it, or have deep pockets and little care over the condition of it, and personally, I wouldn't want to sell my tastefully modded car to the latter person :P

From a parts installed perspective, it will take an enthusiast to want it for that price. It would more then likely be a person that know what they are getting.

For normal market people, it will be a much harder sell. Generally any car changed from stock in not a selling point. The rear wiper would be a selling point to someone like me that actually would love to have one. It's a rare option to have here, but most people just dont even think about it because we never had them on cars other then wagons, minivans, and SUV's.

For the diehard Subaru Legacy JDM nerd, this is a prefect car to get! Not only do you get a well taken care of car, you get a mad amount of hard to get JDM parts. Rear glass, interior, bumpers, hood, and many other parts. Just the front end is about $2k ish. Just the seats makes me jealous! So is the car worth $10K? To the right person yes, to the normal consumer, not so much. Having driven this car, I can say if I was a 3rd gen guy and in the market, I would like to own it because for me it would be a blank page with just about every JDM part I would want. Well, I do like the other Blitzen rear bumper more, but thats me... haha

After all the discussion, this is still a "may be" scenario.

rougeben83
12-17-2013, 04:28 PM
pretty much, the mods at this point aren't a real selling point to the public at large. It really depends on where you want to pu your ad up. On subaru-enthusiasts sites, you'll probably get a more enthusiastic response, but on some place like autotrader? Not so much.

Well, it's official. The wife has signed off on the sale of this car once the rear wiper is completed.
The successor will most likely be a Mercedes E500 or E550.

I know I've been on-again-off-again with the idea of getting rid of the H6 and "upgrading", but it's been REALLY difficult for me to pull the trigger on that. I'm still trying to figure out a way I can keep the car and restore/upgrade it, while not having to resort to getting a piece of garbage for the duration. So it turns out that my brother doesn't want his '00 LGT ltd anymore... It's tempting. I just don't want to think about the shipping costs to get it here from Hawaii. Here are some pictures of it (it comes with both sets of wheels):

That is a gorgeous BE. 4eat or 5mt?5mt. I wouldn't consider it if it were an auto. The only reason the wife has an auto now is because that's all the H6's were offered with.

The car has 122,000 miles on it too. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing.

Dead91silvia
02-05-2014, 10:31 AM
Well, you know the car, you know your brother. I would at least check into the shipping. I know it's ballpark $1000-1200 from coast to coast. You could just ship it to Seattle/Tacoma and then come visit me and drive it home.

He should get it shipped to Washington before March, fly out, pick it up and drive you back for the MD meet, and then you only have to fly back.

Yamazaki

I am going to San Diego in April. If I were to ship it to the West Coast, that is when/where I would pick it up. But as a few of you know, it costs more in gas, food, and lodging to drive cross country than it does to ship it directly. I would just ship it here.

And I do know my brother, the car probably hasn't been properly maintained.

VDC to the rescue today. The Impreza is snowed in (it would keep sliding to the left on the road, and I couldn't get out), but the H6 got to work just fine. The VDC system was whirring and buzzing like crazy though. I've never had a chance to see it in action like this before, it was kinda cool. I totally understand why almost all of the Subarus have VDC (well, an updated version) now.
I wish the Impreza had VDC...

Guys, guys... Maybe it's a second vs. third gen difference, but I've never had any issues with my car sliding in the snow, unless I intentionally push it to. No VDC, no ABS, no TCS, no stability control, no need. I'm not trying to make myself out as some superman behind the wheel, I've just had nothing but positive experiences in winter driving with my car.

Drive a VDC car in a situation that VDC will come on, and you will see a difference.

I like to think I'm not a slacker in the ice and snow (driving a Cappucino on unplowed Northern Japan winter roads will forcibly teach you a thing or two), but driving the Impreza seems to be tricky in high-snow for some reason.

I cant give you any crap about that, but Muse is right, to an extent. Many people rely and trust their car too much. I dont thing Yama will ever have that problem having driven that little beast in the snow.

Mike, you dont need a "newer" car. You car should still be amazing in the snow! My BH was a blast for me to drive!

After all this, to this day, no joke, my best snow car was my 1970 Volvo 142. Yes, thats right, a 42 year old car. Now thats not saying there are not better ones out there, it's just to this day this is the best, and yes, this is OVER my Subaru's.

I really do with I could play with a VDC car in the snow. Would be amazing to see why Yama is so excited about it because when he gets excited about cars stuff, I do also. So if he says its great, that tells me a lot.

With the amount of power in his STI I cannot imagine that it would be easy to drive in the snow.

Yamazaki
02-15-2014, 12:11 PM
Well, a few of you may remember that I said the S401 made me a worse driver. That's because the S401 covers up any mistakes or errors you make. You can start off in the wrong gear, mis-shift, etc, and it doesn't matter. That's what VDC is like. I'm not saying that a good driver needs it, I'm saying that it makes driving much easier by doing everything for you. The Impreza and Cappuccino are the opposite. The Cappuccino will punish any imperfect throttle and wheel position (by putting you backwards in a ditch), and the Impreza punishes imperfect shifting (by stalling out). VDC is the anti-Cappuccino. Sure, it's not as much fun, but that's what the "VDC off" switch is for.

rougeben83
02-15-2014, 03:31 PM
to be fair though, I can see how the imprezaab can be a handful in the snow, especially on all seasons...not only the power, but a twitchy suspension in the snow is a double-edge sword.

I wouldn't mind VDC as long as it has a switch to completely turn it off...

Its good to see the blitzen6 is still finding use :)

i guess im the only one who sees VDC as another thing that will break, so far i managed to park my car on 18" snow banks that plows made without issues. driving on snow is something you have to get used to, i don't think i have needed VDC in the past 7 years of owning it, high ground clearance and snow tires make this thing a beast in mud/snow

So now that dead91silvia has returned home and the issues I have with the H6 aren't as major as I had thought, I will start the Great Restoration Project when I return from San Diego in a few weeks.
Unfortunately, the H6 will be competing with the Mercedes for time and resources (money).... that's a tough fight. So this project may take a very long time.

So like a bunch of other people did, I bought the Nissan auto up/down switches. I finally arrived back in MD yesterday and opened up the box.... to find the same things that's already in my car. I called the seller and they're sending the correct part. I guess I have to wait a little longer. :smt012

Damn I want one too, asked this question before... do you know if the switches will work in JDM cars, I reckon they should

rkrenicki
04-18-2014, 07:29 PM
They will not. The JDM switch is quite different from the USDM switch. The primary difference is that the door lock controls are part of the handle in japan, and are part of the window switch here. Also, the connectors are wildly different.. from what I can gather, the JDM switch assembly has two connectors and ours only has one.

Besides.. you should already have Auto up and down on your driver window? The S401 and Deads 96 GT-B has it, I figured that all of the JDM cars did.

You're right I do have auto driver window, would be nice to have the same on the passenger side. Should really pull mine out and compare. Thought Yamazaki would want to give it a go with his S401

Actually, I was planning to get it for the S401 as well, but if rkrenicki says it won't work, then I have no reason to believe otherwise. I could always pull the switches and actually look at them before ordering blind (that never actually occurred to me..)

You might be able to make a hybrid, but that might be a little bit of a pain.

This is quite off topic from this car, but here is a picture of the JDM switch mechanism:
http://auctions.c.yimg.jp/f30batchimg.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/users/9/3/7/1/spx_store3-imgbatch_1389925215/600x533-2014011700075.jpg

The Top-left connector closeup is the mirror switch, the other two are the window switch connectors. The one on the end looks the same as ours physically, but I have not checked the wiring to see how similar that is... the other connector however, we do not have at all.

That was the issue that I found when looking at the JDM Wiring when we were all down there for the meet, but at the time the thought was putting a JDM switch into a US car. This was before we knew about this Nissan switch module.

The normal Nissan switch only does auto on the driver side. This is an "upgraded aftermarket" switch that does both.

Haha I was wondering how you planned on doing that. I thought you knew something I didn't so I just let it go.

It might not be a lost cause if you could swap the circuit boards and use keep current housing. Then you would just be back to the problem of wiring.

So I got the auto up/down switch in. Works great. Then I went over to the Merc to see if it had the auto up/down on passenger (I knew it did for driver side), and found that it has auto up/down for all four windows...
*sigh* I wanted to think I could make the H6 as good as the Merc, but it's clear that just isn't possible. So I'll stick with the much more attainable goal of making the H6 better than it is now. Less tears and frustration that way.

Yeah, that never happened. I've been back for a couple weeks now and the Impreza hasn't been driven since the MD meet. I'm liking the fuel economy and ease of driving the H6 over the Impreza. I'll get bored of it eventually though, and then things'll happen! I promise!

So this is a "nevermind" kind of thing. I found out that what I was thinking of doing wouldn't work very well, and then the extra money dropped on the "new" Merc kind of dashed any plans to try to make it work.

Once my bike has passed inspection and I have a full riders license, I will put the H6 up on stands and start taking it apart. The fenders will be rolled (wheel well) and pulled (adjoining door), and I will take out the spacers to lower it properly.

So this project had been on hold due to some serious complications with the car and lack of skill/tools on my part. Rkrenicki came for a few days and solved those issues. We spent nearly three days on a rear subframe bolt that wouldn't give up and some front strut bolts that didn't want to leave either. Finally, with those problems resolved, the project is moving again! With the suspension and drivetrain all sorted out, I only have to focus on the body fitment, interior, engine, and paint. So there is still A LOT to do, but at least progress has been made.

Unfortunately, I don't have any pictures during the process because we were more focused on success than documenting the progress.

Huge, HUGE thanks to rkrenicki for for all his help (even though he didn't just help - he actually did almost everything!)

Yamazaki
10-05-2014, 11:53 AM
Yup. Everything is fully legacy now. Here 's what we (he) did:
Steering column swapped
Steering knuckle swapped
Removed front spacers
Removed rear spacers (and replaced rusty old subframe)
New drop bolts all around
Swapped rear control arms
New bushings in control arms and lateral links
Swapped rear subframe brackets
Swapped drive shaft
Swapped trailing arm brackets
Installed D type rear subframe brace
Re-installed Bilsteins w/STI springs

What I have left to do:
Put the 215/45/17 tires back on
Get alignment
Install electronic correctional speedometer unit

Then I can focus on one of the other major areas to work on.

Both Yama's car and my car are running essentially identical suspension at this point, except he has the STI Pink springs, and I have the S401 Black springs. This really just means that his car will be a bit lower than mine due to the softer spring-rate of the Pinks.

I had the same with my GTB once - turning the steering wheel a bit helped (to unlock the wheel lock), but you've probably tried that...

Did you reinstall the battery yet? It could be the shift lock.

Otherwise, since we had to re-attach the key cylinder to the column, it is possible that it needs adjustment. I would loosen the two bolts a bit and see if rotating it one way or the other will free up the key movement as the steering lock may be getting bound up a bit.

The battery was connected, but I disconnected it again because I couldn't remove the key and the door chime was driving me insane. I am certain it's the shift lock though. dead91silvia contacted me and asked me about the shift lock and I was like "ohhhh, right. that." It's been awhile since I've dealt with a car that was both auto AND I needed the key in the ignition to drive....

So I started it finally! It is still missing some parts before I put the front end back together (like fender liners), and I am still looking for '05~'07 Impreza clockspring, but other than that I'm mostly set. However, white smoke comes out of the back and I hear metal rubbing on metal sounds from the engine area. All the sensors and plugs are in and back together... I went over it a few times to make sure I didn't miss anything. Thoughts about what it might be?

When I put the Saab steering wheel into my Impreza, I took the Impreza wheel and put it into the H6. The only thing that's been connected is the horn. I'd like the cruise control stuff to work too.

The engine was very cold. I didn't run it very long because of the weird metallic noise. I didn't want to break anything more than I already had.

Ah I see, you may want to look at some of the NASIOC guys with 02-03 wrx's that adapted their cruise control to fit a an STI steering wheel - I think it may be easier to adapt your current cruise control control onto your sti steering wheel.

Well, now thanks to you and your "always keep improving" thing, I want to change the steering rack too. Other things needed:

1) new cowl for front windshield
2) wire up the cruise control button on steering wheel
3) re-do the wiring for the headlight levelers
4) replace the Japanese fenders with North American ones (still missing a passenger side)
5) find and install side skirts
6) put front end back together
7) replace oil pan gaskets, fix other oil leaks, get alignment, replace rear diff bushings, change tires (all of these will be done at IAG)
8) restore the leather seats
9) repaint body (I'm giving up on this one)

I think it would be harder to sell the H6. With all the parts you added/removed I think the average buyer would not want it. With that being said, someone who knows Legacys would love it. But the FXT is more practical when you need to haul some stuff. Tough choice there.

Either one I sell will be for the same amount, so I'm not trying to match mods to the amount I would ask. But it's actually more complicated than that. There's very little left to do on the H6, but it's expensive work (body/paint). The FXT has a lot of little irritations and some routine maintenance items, along with needing a proper tune after installing a bigger turbo and catless uppipe. All of that adds up too.

On another note.. new parts for this car! Legacy S401 springs. The STI Pinks that are currently on the car are too low for my tastes.. this will raise up the car about 15mm or so and give it firmer ride.

I was able to get the car out and I did some work on her today.

I sorted out the rear of the car, tightened up all of the bolts, and changed out the rear shocks and springs with the set from the S401. I forgot to measure before and after, but it is a good 20mm or so higher than it used to be. I will be sure to measure the front when I change out the struts.

Comparison of the STI Pinks vs STI Blacks (S401 springs). Same number of coils, but the Blacks are not progressive, and the spring itself is about 2mm thicker.

Once the front is done, then its alignment time.. and then recalibrate the VDC so it will work again now that the steering angle sensor has been replaced. That should keep me happy mechanically for a little while, so I can tackle the wiring.

Turns out this was not a broken engine mount.. but a loose pitch stop! I am really surprised the amount of noises the car was making with just one of the pitch stop bolts being a little loose. Tightened that up, and it has been doing very well for me ever since.

I still have something loose in the back end, I hear a good clunk when going over some largish bumps.. but I think I might have forgotten to tighten one of the swaybar endlinks when I was last back there..

I have discovered that this car gets noticed... a lot.

In the 4 years that I have owned the RS30.. I have been only noticed on the road a half dozen times. In parking lots, people noticed the XV wheels quite a bit.. but you cant really see them when I am driving.

In the last 2 weeks... I have been flagged down, thumbed up, or waved to at least 5 times. One guy was trying to have a conversation with me about the car in Providence traffic last night. It is definitely a different experience, that is for sure.

Oh, and the louder exhaust encourages me to drive more like an ass.

A couple of small updates to the car. The other day, Muse came by and we tried the bonnet struts that he had (which did not work on his BK) on my car. I ended up keeping them on there and trading him some stuff for them. They are some chinese no-name struts that work okay, but they get RRREEEEAAAALLLLLYYY SSSLLLOOOWWW when they are about 2/3 of the way up.. but they hold the hood up just fine once they finish.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2016/03/5AD4AC9895254055993E91896D4E2D32-1.jpg

I also looked into why the trunk would not pop open. It turns out that the trunk opening striker was just 1-2mm too short. It looks like the North American market has a unique part number for the 3rd gen sedan trunk striker plate (57531AE00A), where the rest of the world used 57531AE000. After looking up this part, it turns out that the 2002-2004 Impreza Sedan used the same part (makes sense, since those Imprezas were made in Japan right next to the Legacy that this trunk came off of), and as such it is available at US dealers. It was superseded at some point by 57531AE001, which is the part that I have. I tried to get a picture of the 001 and the 00A side by side, but really they look identical. I had to take measurements to see that the 001 arm was about 2mm higher than the 00A arm.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2016/03/91c90202c492448dbe3fa93ede4df88e-1.jpg

So, now I have a working trunk pop. If anyone else is considering putting on a Japanese (or any non-North American) trunk on their 3rd gen Sedan, they are going to need this part from either a dealer, or from a 2002-2004 GD.

I regretted those struts about ten seconds after I purchased them. I'd heard that GC struts will work for a BK hood, and only after paying for them, did I realize that in my sleep-induced purchasing madness, I'd bought GD struts, specifically for an aluminum hood. Yyyyeah. Oops.

After getting fed up with 20th century radio technology, I decided to change out the radio on this car. Since it has the McIntosh system, I knew that it was going to be a slight challenge, but a few hacks later I have it working.

Here is my Line-Out to McIntosh Amplifier adapter that I whipped up:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2016/03/88003D2B652640C3A6EB509A617D30E9-1.jpg

After some brief testing and wrapping in electrical tape.. I put it all back together. I did not have a full pocket handy, and I installed the three-switch pocket earlier in the week.. so I have a mix-match of DIN pockets for now.

I am glad to have a decent radio with iPod/iPhone support and this particular radio has both front and rear USB.. so I can stash my spare iPod in the glove box and plug in my iPhone to the front if I want. I also modified the HVAC to read in Celsius and replaced all of the HVAC illumination bulbs while I was in there.

So, I have no mods/changes to report.. but it looks like the steering rack might have given up the ghost on me here. It is leaking fairly badly and has a good 10-15 degrees of steering slop when going straight, which makes it interesting to drive. I guess I will be replacing it soon, and I might as well go with a tighter Legacy rack, like I did on the RS30.

A couple of people had asked for an exhaust clip. I slapped the GoPro to the rear bumper and did a couple of under-load runs. This one ended up being a 10-60mph at about 75% throttle going uphill to get a real good, under-load sound. The road was not very smooth, so I called it quits at 60, but I was hoping to get a bit higher than that.

There really has been no real news on this car. I am getting it ready for sale by replacing the brake pads (had on the shelf for a while) and rotors ($75 shipped for all 4 from RockAuto!), and it looks like I might need to replace the AC compressor as it is quite noisey right now.

I actually have a whole AC kit for the RS30 (compressor, Expansion valve, condenser) since the Condenser on that car is leaking slightly.. I can take the "old" compressor and put it on the Blitzen to fix that issue. I say "old" because I actually replaced it before with a new-old-stock OEM compressor shortly after I bought the car.. it is only a few years old now.

Yea, I have not been able to give this car the attention that it deserves. I also have limited parking at my home and my daughter is getting close having her license as well.. so I will need another parking spot. It was also a stipulation from the better half for getting the Sambar, and I have not yet kept up my end of that bargin.

I just need to finish up some parts replacements to let to be driveable and safe condition before I clean it up for pictures/listing.

With the demise of the RS30, the Blitzen has transitioned back to Active Duty. I have been swapping some parts between the cars, including the exhaust, seats, and battery from the RS. As much as I like the idea and look of the JDM seats, I just do not find them comfortable for longer rides.

So, I will have a number of parts available for sale here very shortly. I will be making a FS thread for them all.

In the process of swapping the exhaust, one of the exhaust studs on the car snapped.. I now need to figure out how to get that out as there is a pretty nasty exhaust leak there now :(.

Muse

Nasty exhaust leak, but not as loud as the open exhaust ports on the RS30.

The car started to accumulate some minor issues with the AC compressor, Power steering pump, and it started to slightly overheat a few days ago. I replaced the compressor, PS pump, and radiator cap with those from the RS30 so it is okay for now, but every Subaru I have owned started to develop multiple minor issues like this around the 200-225k mark.

Since I am not the only driver of the car, and I did not want one of these issues to crop up while my wife or daughter was driving, we decided that it was time to replace it with a newer car. Enter: A 2010 Subaru Forester X Limited (http://sl-i.net/FORUM/showthread.php?20219).

Now it is time to sell this car. I just need to finish installing the rear shocks, and to swap out the front calipers.. and then I will start an official FS thread. This car will be priced to move. I need the parking space more than anything else as I currently have two and a half cars parked on the grass at this point.

Well, between that photo and home, the power steering decided that it preferred not working, and started acting up. Oh, well. It's still good enough to get me to work and back for now, and no good project car comes without a project or two, for starters. I'd kinda prefer to go Subaru Genuine for the replacement, but with a reman unit being less than half the price, budget is going to have to win out this time.

Also, had to take a victory photo, in the same spot my '99 decided to give up on me. You can take the Legacy away from the boy, but you can't keep the boy away from the Legacys.

Well, that's what comes of buying nothing but sub-$1k cars. This is only the second car I've ever owned that I've paid more than a grand for. And, the only other car in that category, my Del Sol, was an absolute champ. Never should've sold it.

Muse

So, the power steering is fixed (thanks yet again, Rob,) and the Blitzen is an absolute champ. Found out that it needs new control arm bushings, but at 177k, that's not a huge shock. Not crazy expensive either. I'll just be replacing them for now, but I think I may upgrade them in the not-too-distant future.

It's been a long time since I updated this, but to be honest, there hasn't been much to update.
The whole driver's seat issue I mentioned? Yeah, that sent me to physical therapy for sciatica. But, in fairness, that was a pre-existing issue that got aggravated, not something the Blitzen did to me in a vacuum.

Aside from that, uhhh... the rust is getting worse on the rear quarter, but I plan to tackle that as soon as I can.

And there appears to be a slight head gasket leak, pushing exhaust gas into the coolant. Nothing rendering it undriveable, but certainly where my tax money is going in a few months. I still absolutely love this car, I am determined to keep it as long as I can, and thus, I'm trying to source a JDM engine to bring the mileage down (and maybe the MPG up, with a less worn out motor.)

Power steering is still temperamental, and there is a bit of a clunk in the suspension. I'll be replacing it with a set of RS30 Bilsteins soon, and hopefully that does the trick.

Also, the transmission is starting to get kinda noisy. I expect that it will need a replacement in the next year or two, so I'm probably going to try to hunt down a 5-speed swap, rather than try to find another VDC transmission with who knows what kind of mileage and abuse.

Lastly, for long-term goals, I've had the unfortunate exposure to the world of Fenderist widebody kits, and while I doubt I'll be able to get one... good god, I would love to make that a reality. Gonna try to get my Class B license sometime down the road here, and maybe start bringing in enough money to make some progress, rather than just slow the decay.

It's still feeling good, but will get hot if I drive it too far, so it's just an around-town transport for now. Got a new job, as the parts guy at a small local mostly-vintage motorcycle shop, and it is going well so far. hoping to buy a 1998 P80 Volvo V70 from my landlord, in order to get the Blitzen off the road and ready for some well-deserved maintenance and possibly a few upgrades.

No updates. It's just been sitting, and I've been planning but not really being able to move forward with anything. I'm trying to get a decent paying job, and once I have some money set aside, I'm hoping to buy a 3.6 Tribeca. Drive it around for a little while to make sure there's no major issues, then start in on a swap. The power, the efficiency, and the lack of a premium fuel requirement all make it sound extremely appealing. Though, I am aware that the wiring will be a lot of work. I anticipate using a standalone ECU to get it all working. I am lucky enough to have a proper mechanic's shop in my back yard in case I get hung up on things, who can help me figure out any stinking blocks.
