Spot the new mod....

That doesn't help?

Try this (sorry, night shot with no tripod + shaky hands):

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2008/09/IMG_4347JPG-1.jpg

Thanks to Grant for hooking up the Chargespeed grill. For anyone who's curious, this is definitely not a bolt-on with Morettes; I ended up trimming the corners because it looked wrong, and I still have some more cleanup to do around the tops of the Morette buckets; it would be considerably easier on normal glass headlights. I need to repaint the Morettes, too, but this'll work for now, I just wanted to get the fitment right.

And this is where the magic happens:

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2008/09/IMG_4349JPG-1.jpg

That's 4 sets of wheels and tires on the back wall, and another stack on the workbench, a few spare sets of seats, and more crap than I can shake a stick at. For those of you wondering what all the spare shit for multiple modded Subarus looks like, there you go. Get a storage unit. Trust me :D

On a down note, I grabbed a Japanese center console only to find out it won't work in any way with a US automatic car; the business car holder goes right through the spot occupied by the gear selector, and the shifter surround is a different shape that completely covers the gear indicator. Ya win some, ya lose some.

That's sexy, I saw the same grill on Rinkya. I thought about getting it, but cash flow is tight right now. Are you going to hold on to the other grill. If you have thought about letting it go, I'll be more than happy to take it off your hands.

sybir
09-14-2008, 11:20 PM
The other grill is pretty beat up and needs some filler work, I'll probably hold onto it as a spare. You can grab those ones on Ebay relatively cheap ($80), just look for the picture of my car to make sure you're getting the one that's put together decently.

Looks good Sybir.

2 ?'s-

What did you have to use to mount this?

How does the center, screw/bolt up to the center support bracket? By a tab?

Again, Looks Devious in a good way :smt023

sybir

The grills come with a 90 degree lip on the back edge that may or may not have indicators for where to drill. I think most people use a screw or something to that effect, but I mod the back lip to accept the factory grill clips (you need to make a square hole that's snug enough that the clips can seat). Takes some patience with a dremel, but it's worth the effort because I open the hood, pop 2 factory clips and the grill is out; all of the Japanese aero grills get clamped down by the hood and I have horn wiring running through the inner mounts, so I don't even use 'em.

Here's a crappy pic (filthy, too) on the old grill so you can see what I'm talking about.

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2007/08/IMG_1145JPG-1.jpg

I ended up using a small piece of 3m tape on each end just to keep the eyelids from being free and ripped off by something, but it pulls right up when I need to take the grill off to get to the lights, etc. The constraints under the hood mean I can't do much to hold it down otherwise, though I may try and tuck it in a little with some small hardware on the Morettes just to locate it so I'm using a fastener instead of adhesive.

I have a question... How many years have you been pimping to get to where you are today?? I'm really in the wrong business right now.

sybir
09-15-2008, 10:53 PM
Believe me, I'm hardly pimpin'. I haven't had a payment on the wagon in 8 years, which helps; I have long-standing relationships with local shops that make parts and maintenance cheap, and yes, I have some connections, but most of the stuff is just good old fashioned patience, and saving my money so I could hop on deals when they came up. I know people who dropped 800+ on a FHI 4 pot setup - I paid 1k for my Stoptechs with only a couple thousand miles of use on them. I wanted this grill for about 6 years.....when one came up I hopped on it with no hesitation. The car game is about being decisive...........my wheel fetish excluded.

If I could offer one word of advice, it would be to make a plan for the car. Then, when someone lists something for sale, and you want it, and it's in your budget, you're already decided. I see so many people waver over stuff for weeks and months. I bought my STi the beginning of July '07. Leading up to it, I already had my vision for the car. I already had the stereo I wanted for it. I already had wheels for it. I had already commissioned a few custom shiftknobs for it. I bought the car, rolled to my shop, ordered the coilovers and EDFC, dropped the wingless trunk off at paint, then went home and ordered the WRX side skirts and fog cover. I started bugging RI about the skidguard, with money to back it up. I then kept a close eye on the classifieds, and grabbed a plate delete, a rad splitter, and some of the other little details, because I was looking for when those specifically popped up instead of browsing to see anything that looked cool. I learned my lesson from all the iterations of the wagon; I didn't lose a ton of money, but I had a lot of sweat equity in slingin' parts to facilitate future upgrades. I decided that I knew what the STi was going to look like, and with the exception of wheels here and there, it was done cosmetically within 2 months, and I did a few little things down the road as the budget allowed. It means that all I have now is a payment and insurance on the STi.....I don't have a constant mod budget draining my wallet because I built the car I wanted from the very start.

Also, I'm not married and not incredibly relationship-driven, so I don't have those budget constraints; I pay minimal rent on a friend's investment property while putting money in the bank...etc.

I'm surprised you actually made it to fit the original clips. I tried to do that, but ended up just drilling holes and zip-tying it onto the holes left by the old clips.

Nice garage, too. :)

sybir
10-05-2008, 02:47 AM
Thanks :D

The garage floor is awesome, it's anti-static floor tiles from a datacenter my buddy redid. No-skid, doesn't take up fluid, cleans up beautifully, takes a jack or jackstand with no issues, and makes it super-easy to find stuff that drops......it also insulates the garage and makes working on cars in the winter a lot nicer. I was really happy with how it came out, and I have spares that just drop in if something gets damaged.

Took some better pics to show off the new wheels since they'll be coming off shortly for, errrrr, the new winter wheels (stay tuned for those). Chargespeed grill is off until I do some more work on it.

This gives you an idea of the fender work - the fronts and rears are now rolled and pulled to clear this setup.

Rota Tarmac IIIs? I'm actually quite disappointed... I've been wanting these rims for a long time and they really don't look as good on the BG5 as I imagined they would.

That said, they're still pretty good looking.

sybir
11-24-2008, 10:58 AM
Negative. They're the new DPT's. The Tarmac 3 is a completely different wheel that's never done much for me.
These are 17x8 ET48, dual-drill (5x100 and 5x114), with a 235/40/17 on 'em.

Wagonista
11-24-2008, 04:38 PM
Interesting. Have you fitted them on the impreza yet?

sybir
11-24-2008, 06:20 PM
Nah. Dual-drill is more future-proofing than anything else; the STi has its own set of winter and summer rubber.

I'm wanting to put some 500 fogs in my bumper as well however I've already got four 500 driving lights and don't want to buy another set of fogs. I'm trying to find someone to trade their 500 fogs for my driving lights.

Grant - I have 18x8.5 SSR GT2's for summer, shaddap :p
Glad you're rocking a rack now, it needed it. The NASIOC guys are hilarious; I like the way the car is going. I'm a retard who was running a RWD Legacy Turbo as a commuter, so I embrace all the different things you can do to these cars.

GTBspec - Cutoff for the Morettes is good. Much more noticeable when I was running HID's, but it's still good with regular bulbs. They work perfectly with HID's, you get a nice crisp LHD cutoff (which is the reason I don't run the Japanese projectors).

impreza_gc8 - This car isn't going anywhere, not sure where that came from. Last time I was considering selling it was to a Suby dealer up north who was going to swap it, and was going to give me ~8k for it as it sat as well wholesale/auction on a '05 GT wagon, but he fell through (this was years ago). I didn't really want to sell it anyways, and now I have the STi, and the wagon has a new drivetrain in it......so yeah. I hear you on the fogs - they're not all that great, but better than stockers. I'm in the same boat- I have a roof-rack mount with 4 Hella 500 driving patterns on it, that I have no use for and would love to trade for fogs that I can toss on the other car. I don't want to drill my roof for power, and there's no other clean way to get juice up there.

1-2-3-4 - The wipers are awesome. These are a few years old and have been through a few winters and still work great. They work better at speed, the shape pushes them harder down on the windshield. They also don't ice up, which is nice

Went back to my parent's place for Christmas, and had to snap some pics. I'm still up in the air on these wheels; I like them, they're functional and fit both cars, but they don't really do anything visually for the wagon. I guess anything is going to look subtle after orange, though, and not standing out means it's stealth. Headers are off for smog and I may just leave them off.......it's nice rolling a little quieter. If anyone local wants OBX equal-lengths, hit me up - they mate up with the stock midpipe and eliminate both cats.

I read about the possible sale on earlier pages in this thread, I didn't pay attention to the date though. I hadn't looked at your member journal before and I went all the way through it from page 1 so its possible you made the post quite a while ago.
Regarding the foglights, I actually put one set of 500 driving lights in the stock foglight position and I'm nothing but impressed. They point out just a bit and light up the inside of turns really well. I'd still like to have fogs down there, kinda, but I think that the driving pattern mounted low and to the sides really comes in handy on twisty roads at night.

Yeah, kinda takes it back a little bit - which I dig. It's like silver wheels have come all the way around to being cool again. Everyone tries to set a car apart with wheel colors (not pointing fingers, I own ORANGE wheels, heh) and there's something to be said for something classic. These popped up and even without a test fit I couldn't say no - bolting them on reassured me I made the right choice.

Thing is, besides a swap (not going to happen with an STi in the garage), what else can I do? 4 different grills, umpteen different suspensions and supporting mods, tranny swaps, motor replacements, 5 different sets of brakes, 7 sets of seats, all the lighting replaced and upgraded, full stereo, doorcards, etc......I've touched every part of the car, and the only thing short of a repaint that changes things up appreciably is wheels. I'm a complete shoe whore too - there's probably a connection.

As for other recent changes, I got an exhaust fabbed up, then reworked to add another resonator, then just pulled out the equal-length headers in favor of stock bits for smog-time - haven't decided if I'll put them back on yet. The steering wheel changed again (it's a vintage Japan-market Momo), the seats have changed...god, 3 times in the last 3 months. I went from Recaro SRD + WRX passenger seat to all WRX seats to blue alcantara Sparco Milanos that I had had in the garage for a year, to JDM V5 STi seats, and back to the SRD, now with an SRD for the passenger as well. I decided to clear out the garage and went through a bunch of different options, and ended up just selling everything off; I'm tired of not having storage space in the garage. I sold 4 sets of wheels between this and the STi, grabbed the Rotas for winter and SSR's, and ended up simplifying quite a bit. I love the wagon, but it's got a quarter-million miles on it, and I have no desire to keep throwing money at mods for it - wheels and tires get swapped out as tire needs dictate. Only thing I need is a rebuild on the coilovers or a new set, but it's hard to care when it's just running 5 miles back and forth to work for the most part. I love the car, and always will, but it's too old and expensive to make it fast. It's parked outside under trees filled with birds - why bother with a paint job? Playing with wheels is an easy choice.

/rant :D

Sure, what angle are you looking for?

There is no question, buy the Recaros. The Sparco Torinos and Milanos are "tuner" seats; they're way too firm and IMO they're not put together well. They use a lot of plastics in the construction that crack and chip, they have low side bolsters that give no support (though the uppers are more bolstered) and the fabric didn't hold up very well to DD use. The Recaros don't cost much more, and are well worth the price. Either are an upgrade over stock, but I'd lean towards Recaros; if you're interested, I have the Wedge floor bracket (sliders bolt to it, it bolts to factory mounting points) that both Sparco and Recaro sliders use in my bin of parts (I actually have 2 driver's rails, lol), so if you're just doing one seat, you'd just need seat and slider, and none of the Subaru-specific stuff.

On a 7.5 with a 215 or narrow 225, should be fine with a light roll if you're low.......I rolled my fenders originally because I was rubbing on a wide 215.....heh.

That said, I spent my morning adjusting coilovers and rolling the front fenders as well as stretching/reprofiling the fender liners so I could clear the 18x8 ET45's on 235/40/18's ;)

You keep reminding me of this, you're a helpful guy :D

I, uh, grabbed another set of wheels. This economy and the firesales popping up are hell on my toy fund.
Another set of SSR's (haven't decided what to do with the GT2's); SSR Competitions in anthracite - 18x8 ET48. The car actually now looks a lot like it did when I first started playing with it, when I was running Rays 57C's, before it had stickers all over it, etc...funny how we come full circle, eh?

I'll snap some pics next time I get the car cleaned up - I was going to wait until summer to toss them on, but a few weeks on old Azenis won't hurt :)

And yes, that now makes it an even 30 sets of wheels. Down to 3 sets for each car now, though. That's progress, I think. Told you it was a sickness.

car looks great as always!!!

any pics of the roof mounted hella bar on the car? sounds like an interesting setup.

also, what kinda $$ would you take for the obx header. (if you do decide to sell it)

sybir
01-30-2009, 01:40 PM
I never mounted the roof bar; it mounts to a factory-style crossbar as opposed to Yakimas, and I never wanted to drill a hole int he roof for wiring. It was on Jourdan's car, I just grabbed it for the lights when he sold it.

On the headers, not sure, I'm still up in the air. I'd really like to avoid shipping because they're massive and it'll add considerably to the price- I'd probably be thinking $250 with a donut gasket and a 49-state O2 harness extension (everything need to bolt it onto a stock car)......which makes it usefully cheaper than new ones for someone local but as expensive as a new one if I have to repackage and ship without a corporate account.

So I traded the DPT's to a local guy for another set of gold Boosts- what can I say, they fit the car.

Also toying around with another idea - just trying to figure out an effective way to wire it. I figure overkill is a good starting point, and I've had these sitting in the garage for a while gathering dust.

I toyed with the idea of roof lights as well however I read that they caused a lot of wind noise and caused glare off the hood. I decided to just make a lightbar on the front bumper instead. I love that Impreza wagon in the background by the way. I really want to own one someday to compliment my RS.

That's a buddy's OBS- it's on the Tein Flex from my old RWD SS. and 16x7 Slipstreams. Fun little car.

I haven't wired up the lights yet- that's what's keeping me from finishing it. It's set up with a single harness and a quick-disconnect, but I haven't steeled myself to drilling into the roof and dealing with sealing issues on a car parked outside 100% of the time. The other option is trying to do something from the rear hatch and run it along the rack, but then I'm running 12v all the way down the car and back up, and I'm basically doing it for shits and giggles as I have no real need for that much light, lol.

Maybe I'll mess with it more this summer.

04-30-2009, 01:03 AM
I grabbed the main Loadwarrior setup with a net for 220 off Craigslist locally, then hit up my local rack shop and got the center extension for 110. Si I'm ~330 all in. The rack normally goes for 350, net is 40 and extension is 120, so looking around for used stuff is the way to go.

Springtime means new wheels (yeah, I know, I know).

SSR GT2. 18x8.5, ET48. 235/40/18 Toyo T!-R's. Tein Flex. Front and rear fenders rolled and pulled.

These will not fit on your stock-fender car with lowering springs, to put it mildly. My rear fenders are in the neighborhood of 3/8" out, and the fronts are pulled around the same amount. It looks like an easy fitment because the car has had a lot of fender work over the years without the usual "flare lip" you get on an aggressive pull. I still have fender liners, and I don't rub.

In other news, the wagon is a magnet for accidents, heh. Got backed into by a little old lady in a parking lot, $2k worth of damage. Goes into the shop (again) on Tuesday. Good news is that it was mostly superficial damage, bad news is that it scratched up one of my GT2's pretty good - and they're not made anymore. Good news is that I found a good powdercoat shop with reasonable prices, so once I get the car back I'll be swapping wheels around and getting the GT2's redone, probably in satin black, or a dark charcoal - I think gold would be too much, and the silver wasn't a huge hit for me.

As to what will be going on in the meantime, I had the PC shop do a test run on my orange wheels, since I was ready for something new (a few other Scoobies locally started running orange and I don't like having things that are replicated, at least locally).

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2009/06/green362-1.jpg

Bada bing!

Yeah, green wheels has been something I wanted to try for a while - I originally got the orange wheels for a steal with the intent of changing the color if I didn't like it. It grew on me, but it was still time for a change.

Old photoshop I did:

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2008/06/wagongreen-1.jpg

Car goes in the shop on Tuesday, same day my wheel/tire guy gets back from a well-deserved vacation, so it'll probably take me a week or so to get them on.

And yes, it's a shoe problem on multiple levels (I've probably gout about 30 pairs of shoes), but I'm not up with old Emelda yet ;)
Now would probably be the time to mention I traded the other set of SSR's to a buddy for his STi BBS's in satin black............we'll see how long those last, they may pay for a new wheelset for the STi, which doesn't get wheel loving like the wagon does.

Accident was down the side: rear quarter, bumper, and wheel. I was in the car, I had backed out and was rolling forward, car from the other side of the aisle backed up and kept going as I was driving away. She admitted fault right away and I had a check from her insurance company within 4 days, so I'm not too broken up about it, just annoying.

I just noticed that funky scratch. Get attacked by a groupie trying to steal a wheel?

sybir
08-05-2009, 05:37 PM
Close. The scratch (there's one down the whole right side of the car) has been there since 2002. I was heading up a stage access road at Rim of the World, and some moron came down (it was a one-way road) at full speed; I had to hang off the side of a cliff to avoid him, and while gassing it to a wide spot, I caught a drainage culvert.

I didn't want to claim insurance at the time (was estimated at about $2500) and I pretty much have just rolled with it; I always figured I'd get tagged at some point and would end up replacing those panels anyways. Then, never had any accidents until the rear and left rear of the car got hit twice in the last year.......there goes that idea :D

Honestly, it's minor enough that I just never bothered fixing it. I'd need two doors and a front bumper, and the paint would never match.

Of course, tossed on one of the new sets of wheels.

Enkei RC-T4, 18x8.5ET48, with a 245/35/18 S-Drive. I dialed in the hats in front - no rubbing so far, but we'll see. These are probably going to a buddy for his WRX project; they barely fit on the wagon, and while they look the business, I have a few other sets I like just as much, will fit easier, and I don't mind banking some cash.

Haha, thanks.

The wing I got on closeout 4-5 years back. It's not a GT wing, it's a factory option Outback wing AFAIK.
Not much has changed on the wagon, it's in winter mode right now. RPF1's are off, Boosts are on, I'm picking up some Enkei ES-tarmacs with Hoosiers on them for summer because I have poor impulse control when it comes to rare Japanese wheels though. I picked up a new Momo that will go on after winter, and a couple of new dents - such is life. Sourcing some rebuild parts for a set of Cusco Zero-2R's I have in the parts pile as the Teins are pretty tired after 130k miles.

That's about it for now - nothing to report. New motor feels great, has more pep than any other setup I've had in the car, but that's mostly because it's a brand new setup. Peace of mind was worth it.

The car was clean, and actually coincided with me having a camera in my hands. Pics from ALMS at Laguna Seca over the weekend.
Silver wheels are growing on me.....will see if I decide to PC them another color when I toast the tires.
OZ Ultraleggera, 18x8ET48 with a 235/40/18 Falken Azenis RT-615. Bright Silver.

Other new bits are a rear '09 LGT brake conversion (vented rotors, etc) to finally balance out the Stoptechs a touch. New wheel bearings and hubs on the rear (both sides) but that's not sexy, just $$, lol.

Fozzy is my homie, rocking my old SSR Comps (perfect on his car)

Next up, new coilovers (Cusco Zero2R's) and the summer Enkeis, ES-Tarmacs in 17x8.5 ET45 in white. 245/40/07 Hoosier AS303's for the week they'll last, then some FK452's for good. I ran white wheels way back but never gave it a chance, so I figure I'll try again.

05-24-2010, 10:48 PM
They're north of 140k, one damper is blown, and I'm keeping them in case I don't dig the Cuscos.......past that there are 3 local guys bugging me for them already, lol. I'll let you know if plans change, though. I'll probably end up having Tein rebuild them and keep them as spares.

impreza_GC8
05-24-2010, 11:32 PM
Do not keep them as spares, I'll take them in their current condition. I have family in CA and will probably be there myself at the beginning of August, if the local thing is an issue. Our cars are like brothers, its only right to pass them on.

sybir
05-25-2010, 06:38 PM
Lol, I'm not looking to sell them. Not looking for any price.

GC8, in all honesty, you can get much cleaner, better-condition sets of Teins for ~800-900 used. I only paid $1k for mine 5 years ago. I'll keep an eye out for any local sets that pop up - they do so with alarming frequency as the market goes downhill ;)

Teins are also not the end-all of suspensions - there are a number of better options out there (that's why I'm trying the Cuscos).

impreza_GC8

It wasn't the name brand I really cared about, I just like knowing without a doubt they would work on my Outback since I've seen them on yours.

sybir
05-25-2010, 08:12 PM
That's the other thing. My car is as high as you can go with those coils. Even as-is, it's borderline. The tower height on Legacies is that much taller than Imprezas. My lower strut housing is backed almost halfway out of the knuckle mount - right at the edge of what's safe and I'd prefer more.
Any WRX coilover will bolt up, though.

nftyper
05-27-2010, 10:11 AM
So how many inches in lenth from top hat to bottom of your coilover, front and rear, do you have to reach the drop that you have? Im about to put some tein's on my outback but dont know where to start on the adjustments.

impreza_GC8
05-27-2010, 01:48 PM

That was my reasoning behind wanting yours, because due to the variations from coilover to coilover I wasn't sure if a different brand would raise up high enough to work for me.

sybir
05-28-2010, 01:14 AM
Gotcha gotcha. I'll know more after I try to mount the Cuscos - may be an expensive experiment ;)
02-07 WRX/04 STi Tein Flexes are all the same except for some running changes in spring rate, but any of them will bolt up just like these.

I've never measured, because in part it's moot - different car weights, spring rates, wheel sizes, etc, all play a part, and I've messed with the height a lot over the years as well. Next time I have the wheels off I'll check, but going this low isn't an issue coilover-wise, it's going much higher that I wouldn't know about.

Nice wheels dude. Still looking good, still the king of wheels. My buddy has those same white Enkeis on his 07 WRB WRX Wagon.

I just took a 2nd look and saw they were hoosiers...Jesus. Hoosiers run way wide, I had 225-45's on a 7" wide wheel and they fit more like 245's. If your white wheels are indeed the same as my friends, neither the wheels nor the tires are street legal. You rebel you!

Reason

They are Hella horns

sybir
07-23-2010, 10:38 PM
Yep, horns aren't an "Impreza" kit, they're just Supertones that everybody runs.

And yes, the tires are "competition use only" AS303's. They've lasted surprisingly long; I thought I'd toast them in a week or two and they've been on for nearly 2 months with no wear to speak of. They were heatcycled pretty well before I got my hands on them, though.

The ES-Tarmacs are labeled "comp use only" as well. They weigh 16lbs even for a 17x8.5 - they're pretty light for a cast wheel, even a MATS process wheel. I really fell in love with the look - it'll only be on the car for 3 months or so out of the year, so white isn't much of a hassle to keep clean. Will fit a bit better with the Falkens in the garage....these rub a touch in the rear and I don't feel like pulling the fenders further or adding camber.

Thanks guys, still amazes me that the car has such a following after all these years.

Interesting update (at least IMO). Swapped suspension - the Tein Flex's had a blown RR insert and were getting tired all around. Replacement setup is Cusco Zero2R. Here's the fun part; the rear end on these cars is not camber-adjustable. Why is this relevant? I actually ended up losing a degree or so or camber out back, to the point where a 235/40/18 on an 18x8 that cleared with no issues with 5 people in the car will rub with just a driver around corners or bumps. Never take anyhting for granted; I need to take some measurements but suspect the Tein rear lowers have some inset on the top knuckle mounting tab that gives more static negative camber.

I'm going to toss some camber bolts in the rear and see how much I can dial it in - moral of the story is what I've been saying on here for years; get your suspension set up, then figure out what wheels and tires will fit with your setup, not the other way around. I'm working on it a different way; I may pick up some rear camber plates as well, but it's why I can't answer questions like "what's the widest setup that will fit on my car" ;)

Airgne
09-05-2010, 08:36 PM
hmm. will top mount camber plates fit in the rear? at least you can adj the camber somewhat on 2nd gens. you cant on 3rds.

sybir
09-06-2010, 12:52 AM
Yeah - I actually missed out on a set of rear camber plates when buying this setup by about an hour, or I'd be running them. The Zero2R's are a weird setup, so I'm limited to the Cusco plates, which have about a 4 month lead time most places; I'll try a set of camber bolts first

Double-edged sword - at least the 3G+ cars gain camber under compression and the suspension mounting points and angles aren't separately affected by shock/spring changes (and therefore subject to the whims of aftermarket manufacturers). I figure Tein kicks the top in a little so they'll split the difference on sedans and wagons, and I'll chalk it up to running multiple setups not designed for the chassis. Pave the way, hit a few bumps, it's how it goes, right?

Envy me when it runs, lol. With 280k on it over 14 years I'm starting to have to chase down "lasts the life of the car" parts these days. This will be the 3rd time I've done front axles, if memory serves - but it's my fault for running jacked up geometry and lowering an OB.

There is no way I could still have this as my only car, but I love it too much to let it go. I shouldn't complain too much, I have the STi, but I still like driving the slow-ass wagon just as much :)

Also, a buddy just picked up a white 98 OB. It's depinstriped, lowered on zero2R's and running my old RC-T4's, and Morettes are in the mail, so we'll have a couple of evil twins running around. Cracks me up when I see them together, will grab some pics once he gets the new bits on.

Put the SSR's on, along with a set of 4pot/2pots. Also ditched the Cuscos to help build a complete set for my evil twin, so I'm back on a newer set of Flex's witht he updated lowers. Have to say, I love the 4pot/2pot setup; the fronts are smaller than the Stoptechs, the rears are the same rotor as the LGT setup but use a smaller pad, but they're balanced well and the car feels awesome with the rotating weight removed from the front end. I love the Stoptechs, but they were overkill for DD, so I passed them on so someone else could have some fun, and lowered my brake maintenance costs at the same time.

Wheels are SSR Professor SP1's, 18x8.5 ET47. Tires are some Falken 225/40/18's I had around - way too narrow, but wanted to put them ont he car before I put any real time into refinishing/changing up the wheels.

New! Raise your hand if you're surprised. Traded the Rota Boosts for these, for winter. Those are the same Rota Boosts that I got in trade for a set of DPT's......so I basically traded DPT's for CE28's, straight up. Yes, that makes me an asshole, lol. They're not mint, at least.

Volk CE28N. 17x7.5, ET51. 225/45/17. Sunk like a battleship, which is hilarious - I look at my fenders and realize that I used to rub with this wheel setup and a narrower tire, with the car nearly an inch higher. That should help explain any of the questions about how much the rear fenders have to come out to fit the rest of my wheels, lol.

And I'm a ricer, but I love the way the 4pot/2pots look underneath these.

Take this with a grain of salt, and know that I have no issues with Rotas - I've run probably 15-20 different sets between the cars. The DPT's really don't look the same - they're one of the only sets that I ran and wasn't really digging. CE28's are iconic, and not having the same finish or delicate spokes kills the look for me.. I have Emotion CR Kai's and have had Torques, RG2's and Boosts, etc - but the DPT's in a 17x8 don't look quite right to me. Maybe it was the color - the bronze they used on the DPT is almost a chocolate brown, and doesn't really look right in a satin finish. The gloss bronze on the other Rotas is a nicer finish. Maybe in a different color I'd feel different. I did love that the DPT's were dual-drilled, though I never put them on the STi.

Pains me to say, because I'm really good friends with the Wheeldude guys and they gave me a great deal, but you can really see the difference. I suppose that's kind of the idea, they shouldn't be exactly the same.

For comparison, the DPT's:

And this is why I want Rota DPT's in Matte Bronze... Looks great!

I definitely understand what you mean. I just like the price tag of DPT's over the price of CE28's... And they would still give me the overall look I am going for. Thanks for the feedback.

I imagine they can't replicate them exactly as they probably don't have the rights too...

Keep an eye out. I traded Rotas for these CE28's, and the last few sets of wheels I've picked up have been at firesale prices, and they're all trick JDM stuff. Save up money so you have a wad of cash to throw at a seller and you'll happen on some great deals - it's all about being able to jump on something because you've been patient and can afford to swoop in on a deal when other kids are trying to work out payment plans or "can you hold these for 3 weeks while I try to sell my other wheels" or "do you want a stock MR2 exhaust, a sharpei puppy, and some knockoff Nikes?" Doing some work yourself can make for even better deals - lots of people these days treat slightly damaged items as disposable, when a little work, paint, time, or money will not only net you a passable if not improved result, but get you exactly what you want.

My Advans, for example, cost me less than the Boosts did, new. The SSR's, the fancy 3-pieces? Two were bent and the guy was basically selling them for scrap value. I had the 2 bent wheels repaired, spent some quality time refinishing the barrel on the one that literally had the barrel folded back on itself, and you can't tell from more than a foot away.......a $2500 set of wheels for less than a set of tires. I'll probably pass them onto a buddy for a song - I'll make a few bucks for my time and effort, and he'll get a smoking deal on a nice set of wheels too. As should be obvious, I've always got things moving around - that flexibility is why I have had so many different setups - keeps me entertained, and modest profits every once in a while help subsidize trading up in some cases ;)

Sybir, i was wondering about when you were running the tein coilovers. You said how in the front the top hats need to be swapped is this also true with the rears?

sybir
11-26-2010, 11:57 PM
Nope, rears aren't camber-adjustable anyways. When I redid the new coils, I kept the uppers on the correct side, but rotated them - I have less absolute camber adjustment, but I gain caster when I add camber, so it's a better solution (since I never adjust them anyways)

A buddy's wife was rocking the wagon for the last 3+ months - celebrated the hoopty's homecoming by finally putting on the Advans.
RGII's, 17x8.5, ET45, with a 235/40/17 (a touch narrow, but oh well). I'm pretty happy with them - these go in the "hold onto for a while" category for me along with a couple sets of Enkeis and the cute little CE28's, lol.

Went back to the Enkeis for summer, and got decent pics somewhere other than my driveway while the hoopty was clean.

Haha. That was actually over about 20 minutes or so - went out a little before 8:30 last night with a new lens and ran around with it for a little bit - light drops quickly. The later shots were about all I could do hand-held.

Light at the end (before the final long shots) was more like this:

It would take a significant investment to match what my tire guy has - not to mention a larger garage. But yeah, at some point.......

Picked up a Primitive skidplate (can't be too careful, and Paul made me a smoking deal), and will toss it on when I go through the front end; time for some more whiteline bits and a refresh on all the wear components after 290k miles, lol.

Debating picking up an aluminum GT-B hood locally and repainting it since my hood is shot anyways, or just letting it go. Seems like repainting one panel is foolish on a car this old and I'm not doing a full respray...and it's not like shaving weight is a concern on this thing.

Get the hood. Flat black it for some sick contrast!

And I hate you. Again. Good thing I support you by buying decals. ;)

I was actually debating wrapping this hood in flat black vinyl so I could go back. Might consider it with the aluminum setup.

The goldies on the wagon are just.... f'in phenomenal Aaron !! As always it looks beautiful / tight stance

Do you have any time in the next few weeks if I come down and I could do some fender rolling ?

Oh I found a shop in Sac that does Liquid Vinyl Transfer = http://eclipseyourcar.net/water-transfer/

sybir
08-28-2011, 11:26 PM
Sure thing, Seth - not a problem. LMK.

Eclipse used to be a top-drawer shop, but their work fell off while their prices stayed exorbitant. That particular vinyl transfer is for interior pieces, for doing things like woodgrain, stone, or carbon look - won't hold up on exteriors but it's a cool idea. I have a few contacts that do larger-scale wraps - will see what the hood looks like when I pick it up, and will have a straight GT/OB scooped hood FS shortly if anyone local is interested - don't want it lying around.

I used to have a smoked set - I prefer the amber as it breaks up the side of the car a little. I may redo the front corners with an amber film as well.

You can't clear the amber sidemarkers. They are orange plastic.

Syb - I have a question about your steering wheel - how did you deal with the SRS system, or did you not care that the SRS/Airbag light is illuminated with a non airbag steering wheel?
I am thinking of ditching my Momo wheel and going with a 325mm dia. non-airbag wheel.
