My quandary now is whether to lift it.....all the way back up with Fozzy stuff. Sell off a few (lol) sets of wheels, keep a few of my favorites, and do some 15" gravel wheels with General Grabbers. I have a low STi...but I keep thinking that as fun as it would be, I'd hate it lifted after driving it lowered for so long, and should just buy a truck for a daily urban assault vehicle. I dunno, lol.

Hey you made it an icon. Not so much because it was lowered, but because it was an Outback, that is now lower than a large number of non stock vehicles, and probably more accurately, has had more wheel sets than most people ever burn through tires on a vehicle with the same amount of miles.

Really, the only way to go in a truly new direction with this car would be to do something insane with the drivetrain. Like a CVT and a hybrid engine.

Sidewall is the new hotness, or something. 15x7 Braid Winrace Acropolis gravel stage rally wheels (gobs of clearance for the 4/2pots, the reason I went to these brakes) with Bridgestone Dueler HL's in 205/70/15 (stock OB size, lol). This was more of a test fit to see if they'd clear with the coilovers at my normal ride height, and they clear everywhere in normal driving - will see where I end up rubbing in spirited driving, but I'm going to keep them on for a little bit. Next up - evaluation of 10k springs + 70-series tires, lol.

Cleanest Outback I've ever seen. I've always thought of them as the legacy gt's ugly sister, but yours makes me quite jealous. The morettes and flat black accents set it off. Thinking of doing the door trim black on mine too but the contrast may be too much as mine is white. Two questions: did you go with the kartboy big brake adapter for the 2 pot gravels? and what was that setup on the top of the page with the gold five spokes? perfect stance in my opinion

Thanks. I've always liked black trim on white cars - it's a very late 80's Japanese thing that works for me, I guess. Also very STI RA-ish.

The most recent gold 5-spokes are Advan RCII's in 17x8.5 with a 235/40/17 Falken. Same suspension setup, Tein Flex with custom rates.

I'm not running brake adapters; I carried over the entire rear knuckle from an '06 WRX so it's all factory parts bolting up. I am not a fan of the adapters, no matter who makes them - one of the holes is so close it's almost overlapping, meaning there is a serious weak point. Yes, it's rear brakes, yes, it'd probably be fine, but doesn't sit right with me.

What do you think about the tein's you can find on eBay from bg5 take offs..they're the master wagon type I believe. What offset are those advans? +38? Do you ever go to any of the meets in Sacramento area?

I get out to the meets occasionally, usually the ones on the 50 side of town. Be careful with used coils, they're usually blown. That said, if you can find a set cheap, why not give it a shot?

The Advans (there have been a few sets) are 17x8.5 ET45.

Don't know if you answered this before, did your wagon come with all the spacers that the lifted out backs have? An did you remove them when you lowered it? Oh an what's your favorite coil spring rates for normal driving? I'm trying to dial my wagon in an have been told some few an far between rates so far

Still have all my spacers - never got around to getting shorter bolts and pulling them, lol.
Current spring rates are 10k/10k. A little stiff, but I also still use it like a wagon; I can fill the back with concrete, put people int he back seat, and drive it without rubbing.

Man, when I first got my wagon, yours was one of the only lowered ones around. Has definitely been an inspiration, and still provides such great reference for wheel size and fitment on the second gens. May the old shell rust in peace.

These are early, early progress pics - we'll call this stage 0.5, lol.

Suspension is in (had to replace a lower knuckle mount on the Tein's but otherwise ok), WRX hubs swapped, 4/2pots, sways, and endlinks all done.
Motor is in, using the intake manifold and upper sensor/EGR suite from the phase 2 '99 chassis donor. Carried over the exhaust as well - a little quieter in this car for some reason.
Transmission is now another freshly rebuilt 4.44 out of a third '99, because my good 4.11 was a phase 1 and not compatible with the chassis/body harness on this phase 2 car.
Car is now tinted and exterior trim has all been replaced (not represented in these early pics)
Not seen is the metric crapton of interior I had to replace (center console base, lid, cupholder, ebrake trim, hvac surround, rear trim panels - every one of them).

Still to come are all 4 interior door panels and window switches (current ones have been dying slowly since I revived the car), all the wood trim out of a 30th anniversary '99 (will see how long it lasts, lol), remove the pinstripe (hate it) the full stereo, speakers, amp and sub, GPS, BT, etc, my Recaros, which I need to figure out a solid power source for since the car isn't wired for heated seats, the rear hatch spoiler (going on tomorrow if all goes well), and still needs a fresh windshield as well as some trim touchup.

Working on rebuilding a fresh set of Morettes and rewiring them, and need to yank apart the front of the car to see if I can space up the bumper top mounting plate, as it's been pushed down in a minor impact and created a gap under the headights/grill. Has a bunch of dents and scrapes that I'll see if I can PDR out before I start thinking about paint and bodywork, which isn't really worth it on this car.

Still, progress!

New wheels are 18x7.5 ET48 Volk LE37T's with 235/40/18's. Leetle tiny wheels (compared to what I'm used to anyways) but I still had to roll the fenders for these as well as what will end up on there once I start refinishing some stuff. I have another set of NT03's that I'm flipflopping between satin black and satin olive green - can't decide.

It's growing on me a little bit. Still have some trim and details to repaint, folding mirrors to install. Dropped wheels (a second set of NT03's) off to powdercoat, got all the stereo stuff reinstalled, '99 30th door panels and switchgear and center trim installed, seats are in and wired.

Next up is reinstalling the Momo, though I'm debating putting in a WRX wheel if the bags and cruise are compatible with the 99's - I've seen conflicting reports.
Then figuring out my headlight/foglight situation.

Man I really have to get myself a wing. It's subtle but it really changes the look of the car to me.
Since it doesn't seem like you removed the Outback spacers on either Hoopty2 or the original what do your rear arms and axles look like? When I installed my coils I was kinda cautious about having the axles at too extreme of an angle and potentially pulling the CVs apart which I really don't want to deal with, and I wasn't sure if I would have enough adjustability in my stock arms to realign the car after lowering it more.

No alignment issues. No axle separation or anything like that and I put the old car through almost 200k like this. Optimal, no, but with the spring rates I run the McStrut issues with above-horizontal arms aren't as much of an issue, and it's not a track or autox car. the counterpoint is CoG that's lower because of the entire drivetrain sitting down an inch.

At the end of the day, the car was 600, buyback on the black car with all my crap on it was 300, and a silver wing was $100 on eBay. It's a 1k car and it's my beater/DD/slow car - so it works just fine :)

I got the Recaro Sport Toplines back in, and ran new circuits for the power functions (height, recline, heaters, cooling fans) and got all the stereo gear back in - 700BT navi (oh god Windows CE I need to replace this dinosaur), Pioneer 6.5's in the 4 doors, Kicker solobaric and Alpine amp, iPod integration, BT, etc. Door panels from a 30th OB went in, along with all the horrible wood trim (since I had every piece) and the center console with rear cupholder from the old car. Need to mod the STi ebrake handle, it doesn't want to fit this one (Legs have slightly different bolt spacing) and replace the windshield before I rewire the V1 (since glass guys always manage to cut my wires up by the headliner) and notch the rear trim for the rear strut bar, install amber fogs, LED bulbs all around, and then the only thing left is the headlights and some PDR for the big offenders.

Oh, and something is off with my hatch wiring - taillights and license plate lights work, but 3rd brake light and wiper motor don't. I need to chase the wiring but I never use the rear wiper and the LED's should help with brake lights for now. There's no common fuse (that I can find) so I'm assuming one of the passthrough harnesses in the top of the hatch got kinked - project for when I care more, lol.

Another set of 17x8 NT03's (I recently got the orange ones back as well). Powdercoat is DuPont "blue", lol. Simple. I like it on the silver.
Need to actually go out with the DSLR< but that will just show all the dents and scratches, lol.

Volks and SSR's are both FS locally if anyone is interested. Would prefer not to ship.

That DuPont blue is far better as an accent color than the whole car. I had a friend with a '71 Satellite in that color, and it was just too blue.

That's just cameraphone, lol. The front of the car has been repainted and the hood and fenders are a oticeably dfferent shade, and the clear on the hood is flattening and yellowing, in addition to some weird dents in places you don't normally see them - I'm keeping an eye out for a straight one that ends up in a local yard so I can swap out as it'll be cheaper than paint.

I think it is because West Coast generally doesn't have to deal with the winters we get in the midwest and East Coast, those wreak havoc on a car's paint.

We get different types of issues. No matter what I do, both black subies have the paint actually cracking up from underneath. The '99 is having different issues due to a poor respray on the hood - the clear is yellowing on the lower half as well as cracking (looks like mercury glass) and is essentially turning into a semi-gloss finish.

I hate show cars, and I dislike washing cars, so I'm not OCD about paint, but I keep them waxed and sealed so having large obvious paint flaws annoys me more than it should - it doesn't have to look perfect but I'm stuck to the idea that I should be able to polish it up if needed. That same reason is why I won't dip the car - it immediately becomes difficult to clean and is higher-maintenance than a cheap paint job would be. I'm exploring options but will tackle it after my wedding in the fall as that's where a large amount of finances are earmarked these days :)
