Welcome! Could be your front main seal.. it went on one of my legacies once, and its pretty common on these cars.. yet, looks like it would be a huge pain in the ass to fix.. so i paid to have it fixed rather then doing it myself. =X

My host is down right now, but if you check in a day or two.. i got a link in my sig that might help you out. .. FSM = factory service manual.. could be pretty close to your year if you have the 2.5 engine.

Welcome to another Ohioan... there are more of us north of C'bus in Cleveland... www.lersoc.com (http://www.lersoc.com)

Some hardcore tech guys reside there also. Including a few normally aspirated specialists.

Could be the separator plate. If you have oil dripping and burning on the collector pipe of the exhuast (the y-pipe) then it is probably the separator plate - a common Subie problem from what I understand (I had the problem too)..

That's why you get it done at the same time as the timing belt & water pump.

Try and find where on the motor the source of the oil leak is. If its in the front then it's probably a crank seal or cam seal. If its near the valve covers, its the valve cover gaskets. If its near the back it's a rear main seal. I believe these are all the common ones.

Not cheap to fix, but it wasn't expensive. I had it done with a few other things while they were in there, so I do not know how much it was for the separator plate alone.
