Here's the deal. I had a student today in a honda passport. As the day went on he told me he originally was supposed to bring a subaru but "the engine broke". I said yeah, I bet it was an outback with a blown headgasket. He said "yeah it's a headgasket!" Later he mentions how they've had a few other problems and they are going to sell it without fixing the motor... Well talked to the father. Here's the scoop.
It's a 1999 Subaru Outback limited (leather, heated seats, power mirrors, I think sunroof) etc... automatic with 140k miles. The timing belt was done at 70k miles, the transmission had to be rebuilt at 110k miles, the speedometer cluster was replaced because the speed wasn't registering correctly and it's had a CV axle replaced.
The dad told me he just doesn't have time to fix it and the dealership wants $2700 to fix it. He said he thinks it's worth about $2-2.5k. So now is the dilemma of if I should flip it.
I figure 2,500 for the car, and then $600-800 to do the headgasket and timing belt, and then I could sell it here in colorado for about $8,000... But I don't have that kind of money right now.
What do you guys think? This is a 99, so that is still a DOHC EJ25 correct? So the timing belt is a little trickier. I'd obviously have to pull the motor as well.
