Hi everybody,

Just joined the Legacy family. I was already a part of the Subaru family thanks to my 04 STi. But I picked up a 99 GT 5spd, with 94k miles. Great car, needs just a little TLC on the sunroof, and some fluid changes. I have read up on the head gasket issue and it seems like I need to be saving for a swap or couple grand to put new gaskets in.

Other then that is there anything else I need to be on the lookout for.

Is there any reason you bought a 99 Legacy when you have an 04 STi?

The little wife needed a car. I love my STi, way to much fun.

Hello there! My wife and I rock a 98gt and 2000 outback wagon respectively.

Outside of the head gasket issue and sunroof, I'd say watch out for the following (moderators please feel free to correct me):

1. Oil seals/valve cover gaskets (dampness and a little bit of leaking is not unheard of with most Legacies)

2. Exhaust (some of us drive Legacies with a whistling sound in the tailpipe, almost like you have a turbo, although USDM turbocharged Legacies stopped being built with turbos between '94 and '04)

3. Some parts are compatible with the same year Impreza (...this isn't a bad thing. Impreza RS parts, anyone?)

Seems to me like 97, 98, and 99gts are becoming more and more rare out there. Enjoy yours!

Yea your crank seal, here and there a few rear main seals go, also the plastic baffle plates leaks. It's go to replace it with an aluminum plate if you have tranny work or the rear main seal done.

Thanks for the replies guys. I will keep my eye on the oil leaks and such. I was wondering, how hard is it to put the 2.5 SOHC engine in? I have a friend that is doing a STi swap on a 00 or 01 RS and I was wondering if I could put that engine in.

As far as pictures go I am on a business trip but I should get some pics this weekend.

You'd need the ECU. You'd save a bit on weight and there'd be more room in the engine bay.

You'd have to match your pinouts with your harness, but apart from that I don't see a problem - you'd have to switch intakes too, SOHC RS uses MAP intake vs. MAF.
