Hi,

I have a Problem only a international Legacy forum can solve ;)

The Gearbox of my MY99 Legacy BE/BH (Type BH9, 2.5 Liter Station Wagon with Manual Geabox) has a problem: when I drive in the 5th gear the gear jumps out sometimes (e.g. when rolling along with cruise control).

So I have to reopair the gearbox. I looked at the Workshop Manual and found out that the Liberty (Australian model of the Legacy) has a different transmission ratio:
- the axle ration is "shorter" (I think the ratio used in the Outback)
- in contrast, the 5th gear is "longer" (6% longer)

My plan is to get a used "Australian" gearbox, swap the axle differential and use the combination "long 5th gear with normal axle diff" to have a quiet long transmisstion ration for the german Autobahn

My Problem: I have no Idea where to get a Liberty Gearbox (except for eBay, but there are currently no BH9 Gearboxes available).

Maybe a SL-I Member from Down Under can give me a hint?

Regards,
Gerd

The only vehicle I've ever seen pop out of 5th gear while cruising was a 1981 Toyota Pickup. I have no idea why it would either. I'm guessing it only pops out when there's no load on the transmission or engine, as the Pickup did. If it's popping out when you've got load, there's a serious problem with your gearbox.

My LGT has 4.11 gearing with a short 5th gear. How short? It tops out at 135 mph, whereas my 2000 Legacy L with the 3.9 gearing and longer 5th topped out at 150 mph, though the governer was at 140.

As for popping out of gear, why not find a car with a 6MT and swap transmissions? It sounds like you could use a gearbox that's got a nice long final gear, and the 6MT's did come with longish 6th gears. Unless you've got a turbo motor, a long 5th gear may not get you a very high top speed. My NA 2000 BE only made it to 150 due to a long, steep straight hill. With the shorter gears, I'm sure my BK LGT could wind up to the top of 5th on flat roads.

how many kms on the engine/transmission?

Pics of your sweet Liberty? I want to swap rear hatches (LGT Wagon) with a Liberty, except I don't want to be without a rear hatch during shipping. :-( I also want to keep my spoiler.

Hi,

yes the gear only pops out when there is no load.

I have a EDM Legacy (Picture is in the Ride of the Year contest ;) ), I want the gearbox of the Liberty.

A 6MT would be fine but I'm not shure it will fit. Additionally my Station Wagon has a Dual Range Gearbox and I want to keep this feature (2x5 gears are better than 1x6 ;) ).

The Car has a mileage of 145000km (90000miles). Apparently the previous owner misthread the car since I had a broken centre diff at 60000km (38000miles).

Edit: I found a gearbox in eBay germany, but the part is from a MY05 Legacy (BL/BP). Does anybody know if it will fit?

Subies are legos, of course it will fit. :p A dual range gearbox would probably be larger than a standard 6 mt anyway.
