Filled up the BD for the first time... ever... and the needle took a good mile or two of driving before it finally eased it's way to "F".
Also when taking off the gas cap it sounded like I was opening a nice cold can of beer. PWSSSHHHHH!
Both normal??
EDITED by Huffer for bad spelling of "gauge"

yes both normal. the fuel gauge meter is in the gas tank. after a longtime it will sometimes take longer than when it was new. sometimes a fuel system cleaner will help remove some of the crude on the float level(controls needle). now for the sound you heard. that is the sound of the pressure that is built up in the tank. fuel injected systems are pressurised(i cant spell). you need a certian pressure to feed your injecters. so bother are normal and not something that you should have to much consern about. just use a good fuel system cleaner on your next fill up. make sure when you do this put the system cleaner in before you fill your tank as not not over fill, and it helps mix the cleaner.

Yeah, my fuel needle takes about 1-2 miles before it's back to the top. Never really bothered me that much though…

i was under the impression that the vapor that comes rushing out was from when u have a low fuel level in the tank and the vapor builds up and once u open the cap it all comes out.... and i also have the annoying 1-2 miles drive before it comes up

Sorry I just owned and worked on a bajillion cars before this one and just wanted to make sure it was normal for Subaru.
Which reminds me I was going to throw a bottle of Redline Fuel Cleaner in there before I filled up and forgot.

And the EVAP system is supposed to trap these vapors. If you have EVAP, I don't think you should be getting the vacuum sound when you open the gas cap.

I think a few of mine did.... older models if I remember right ('94 Talon, '95 Neon probably). That's why they have "REMOVE SLOWLY" on the caps. But my newer and current non-subaru cars don't do that.

The gas tanks are pressurized at some point. Just about every car I've had has had a "pssshh" vapor lock let off - including those with an EVAP system.
the amount of vapor release differs each time, and by ambient temperature too.
Either way, the pre-2000s Subaru's have slow rising fuel gauge needles.
