View Full Version : Aftermarket Coil Pack for 98 EJ25?

Hey,

I have some corrosion in my coil pack (I think that's what it's called. It's the black plastic box with the 4 wires coming from it, lol), and my mechanic recommended replacing it in the near future. They run about $84 or $140, but my friend who works there strongly suggested looking into an aftermarket one.

What brands/products do you recommend? And how easy is this going to be to do myself? I understand you have to clock it properly, but I'm not sure what that entails.

I realize there was a thread posted about this recently, (or at least an argument about it recently) but I was a bit confused after reading it, and want to make sure I find the proper part for my vehicle.

Thanks for your time,

Phil

If you're going to spend ~$80, go with the msd 8239 coil pack. Its more durable than the neon coil and puts out a higher voltage.

Here is one of the DIY threads on it. Its easy.

Maybe not? I need to take a closer look. That was just what I though it had at a glance, lol.

I think APidgeon is talking about the 4 spark plug wires.

I did the neon coil pack conversion and I couldn't be happier. $35 from the junkyard including the pigtail. 30 mins to fab up an adapter plate and splice the wires. Plug and play with your existing spark plug wires. Look up the DIY, dooo eeeeeeet

Can you do this mod for a 2.2?

Can you do this mod for a 2.2?

it works on the 1.8, 2.2, 2.5 pre-99 (except some 97 and 99 w/ 4 wire coils(driver type) if you have a female type coil(male type sparkplug wires) you need to update to the female type spark plug wires. you also need the neon pig tail of harness that plugs into the coil and wire it into your harness

I might try the Dodge Neon coil pack. Cheaper and if I recall not much of a drastic difference in voltage from the MSD. I mean there is some difference in voltage between the two but I doubt the difference is that noticeable.
