Air Con Temp accuracy

I've got a 1991 BF5 here in NZ with climate control, and while I've had the aircon serviced, the system is still pretty dumb. I get harsh steps of changes in temperature rather then by the degree.

As you guys in the US most likely use the A/C a tad more then us here, I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on what to try? I belive that the grille on the controls houses a sensor. Can these gunk up or something??

We never had a first gen is model here in the US with digital AC.. But I know on my third gen, moving it a degree or two is often the difference between cold and hot.

The temperature displayed is not of the air coming out, but of what you want the interior of the car to be, so it will crank the heat or AC to get the interior to the selected temp as quickly as possible.

never seen system like that before, but by looking at it there should be a temp sensor on it, (it is most likely very fragile) the two pieces that look like grilles will probably house it, and from the back there would be a vacuum line, these sensors tend to pick up lint and not work as well. Also on newer BE/BH there is a light sensor in the dash that also affects how the system responds, check if you have one and it is not dirty/blocked by a sticker above it etc.

I have the button, pulled it from a car in a scrap yard as it looked a bit different then a plate that tells me my car is a Legacy

Good to now about the lines and sensors, I found the light sensor on the dash, which has a clear view of ths sky. Ill try and get another set of climate controls from a wreckers and pull it apart before I go breaking mine

Is your compressor firing consistently? A bad relay can cause issues where the compressor will suddenly just stop working and everything will get rather warm.

also the condenser might need cleaning, there is a video on tube that shows how to do it,
