Reuben's 98 GTB Limited - Massive pic dump, slow DSL need not apply

1998 Legacy GTB Limited, Manual, Black.

I got the car in November 2007, and blew the engine 3 months later. I rebuilt it, and single turbo converted it, and have great plans for it. Here's the rundown. Blue items i have, but are not fitted yet, red is on order.

    Engine
    EJ207 S20C V7 semi-forged, semi-closed-deck crate motor from Subaru.
    Reconditioned original EJ20R Heads
    ARP Head studs
    Baffled Sump

    Single Turbo Conversion completed in Feb 2008, and ongoing engine bay mods;
    WRX RA V2 Exhaust manifold
    SG Up-pipe
VF39 Single scroll, less than 5000k's when purchased! (from a 2.5L STi)
    Rage 3" Catless downpipe
Rage 3" midpipe, with high flow (Straight through) silencer
HKS 3" Silent hi power muffler (Straight through)
    Snorkus removed
    STi V4 Intercooler
STi V4 inlet manifold, (powdercoated for an extra 5hp )
Twin Reg Split fuel rail, using two factory right hand rails
    STi V3 ECU
    V3 Coilpack setup
HKS EVC III (Electronic boost controller)
    Blitz Full auto turbo timer

The engine now basically resembles a stock V3 STi engine, with a VF39, and brand new forged internals (though being GTB, it's shim over bucket, rather than under), and 3" exhaust.
So it has A LOT of unrealised potential. Currently it's running 18 psi and probably around 250 HP At the wheels.

    Handling:
Bridestone Potenza RE003’s on all 4 corners.
    STi V8 KYB's
STI V4 Front Carbon fiber strut brace
    Cusco K-brace
    STi V6 Alloy control arms
STi V3 Steering rack, 2.75 turns lock to lock.
    STi V3 Short shifter.
STi Rose Jointed Pink Lateral/trailing arms
    Front and rear camber bolts.
    Rear subframe locking bolts.

    Interior:
    Defi Boost gauge
    V3 STi cluster

    Exterior:
Stock GTB limited all the way! And i'm leaving it stock too.
Factory spoiler (Had to get this as it came with an RFRB piece of shit)
    STi Carbon fibre sump guard

Well started taking beast apart for his post road trip fix up. When I popped the car up on stands, I noticed a puddle under the front... Great, his 4th blown rad! Well that's what you get with used, will get it repaired, it is a nice calsonic after all. Popped the flat tyre off the rear to get it repaired, as aaaaand turns out the rims cracked! Joy, his second too. Wondering about a set of v7 wheels. At least the wheel bearings cheap, $60 genuine, 25 and 30 for each seal though.

So I've been lazy, beast is still on stands downstairs, with no drivers hub attached, still no radiator replaced, but at least I've got the wheel sorted, got yet another spare, this one's in a terrible state, so sad panda...

Radiator I've got coming in is an OEX, should be alright, I'm not terribly impressed with their quality, but it's brand new so happy days. And replacement steering knuckle and hub I got has been sitting in a paddock for a while and is coated in rust, so I'm still keen on doing it's wheel bearing since I have one ready to go (I should point out I have already tried to replace the bearing in the old hub, but the hub was ROOTED). I just have to swap wheel studs over, cause the studs on the new hub are COATED in rust... That said, the hub face looks fine, just a bit of surface rust on top, so I'll see about trying to get the rust off and inspecting the threads on the new hubs to see if they'll be fine. If not, I've been given a neat trick to get the old studs out of beasts fucked hub without hurting the threads.

SO yeah, slowly progressing, should be back on the road soon, next pay probably.

    Beast in his natural state:

I'm starting to wonder if my rad is starting to go in my GT-B. Is it common? Or just because you beat the hell out of yours? LOL

Me and rads have a special relationship. Between me and my dad we've been through 8, if not 9 rads. I wouldn't say its that common, I'm just spethal.

Beast with one of his kin, the second 'minibeast' as we call it! There was a trio of GTB-LTD's that got singled, 'Beast', 'Snowflake' and this un-named banana wagon... I did Beast and Snowflake (a good mates white ltd), then our friend Jason picked up the banana and singled it himself. I had already moved down south by the time it was done, so it's a very rare sight to see these two together! They live on different islands!

I would be excited to find a JDM RS in that yellow... I dunno why but I like it. Whats with his fogs? They look different then stock. I need a new one anyway so would be cool to know what ones he used.

    Both looking good though.

More pack run and Dyno. The BC pulled 95 KW at the wheels and beast Reuben's GTB got 176 KW at the wheels (The BC had a fuelling issue and boost leat, turns out the FPR was nackered, it's been replaced, and she goes well now, a shame we coukldn't get a good dyno run out of it!)

So yes, weekend before last we took the Beast for a road trip. This time not quite as far as Auckland, but did go across the ferry. The destination; Flat-nats. NZ's first national (all inclusive) Subaru mega-meet. There were two of us that came up from queenstown, "Alf" the BC I posted up a few weeks ago, and the ever broken Beast. Thankfully Beast managed to stay intact for the duration of the drive! I also got to experience the good ol Beast too, the car that earned the name sake... For the first time in 5 years, I was back at 19-18 PSI on 98 octane, and what a wicked car! Sadly I lost my memory card, so all the pics of the track ready BRZ, and the two 22B's that I fulled the card up with are gone forever, probably sitting in some car park in Palmy' North...

So here's some stolen intellectual property.

I wish there was more support for the 1st gen legacy's around here. :/ If I could I would trade my Outback and get a 1st gen to twin with my all-trac and as always your car is still looking great!

Second gens are basically first gens in drag, there's very very very little in the way of maintenance stuff that that doesn't fit a first gen from a second gen. Take the rear sway bar links... If your first gen snaps a link, you can't replace it here... So when this happened on my mates BC, we just retrofitted BG rear laterals with the C-style rear link, and slapped on a GTB 19mm rear bar while we're at it. Bam, done.

As for interior bits, if central locking fucks out out or something like that, a bit of tenasity and a fine touch, and you can-dissassemble any components and repair it, it's usually just a burnt contact or snapped spring or something, nothing you can't custom. They are old cars now, as much as it pains me to say it, so you gotta act like an old car owner, and just get in there and figure out a solution, nothing more to it than that!

I'm a horrible person, there's posts as far back as 2014 on this page, I've moved house 3 times since then!!! I never update this thread anymore

WELL. Beast is out of storage again, been semi daily driving him for 2 months now, and god damn it feels good. What a great car...

A year or two ago when Regular Car Reviews was still small, he was putting the e-mail address at the end of each vid to say "hey, email me you car and location, I may reply!" well he never did, untill about 2 weeks ago. Long story short he's on holiday here in NZ and was swinging by Queenstown, we got to talking, and I ended up lending him my BC to drive around in while he's here, and today he did a P.O.V drive in the Beast. Cool! He's a nice guy! Keep an eye out on the channel, it may be several months, but the vid may pop up sooner or later.

In other news, been getting an idle control CEL on and off... My idle now drops and nearly stalls when comming off the gas.. and i've changed the control unit twice... Gotta get off my arse and test the wiring, see if there's high resistance anywhere... Fitted a new OEM o2 sensor in the mean time to try get back to the fuel economy this car used to get 10 years ago when it was still sorta new. I know the economy drop will be from the drifting calibration of the aging sensors, nothing else has changed that much since the single conversion... I will have to stump up for a new air flow meter too at some stage, as a matter of preventative maintenance... Sad to think I got this car when it was 9 years old... it's now legally old enough to drink in the states... I stand by my word, I WILL NEVER SELL THIS CAR. <3

Brian, Mr. Regular, and Andrew Lamb, founder of Camshaft software, the blokes that make Automation. Was a great few days hanging out with these two!

Update. The Beast runs and drives. The engine is marvellous. All seems well. There is a slow mountain of small issues building up I seem to be putting off. Power steering leaks (I have the rebuild kit). Up-pipe leaks. Primary oil return bung in the left head still leaks. Front cam caps still leak. My new engine is getting dirty and this makes me sad. I need to pull this engine and rectify the derps of prior me...

But. It’s fucking fun to drive, and I love it.

One of the best Legacy wagons I’ve ever seen. Blessed to know you are still around and enjoying it!
