saturday our tuner is coming down to the shop to give me a hand with the cold start shiz and tuning.
so hopefully i will have my car running by next year. ;)

lord flashheart
01-05-2013, 10:23 PM
GOT MY SHIZ TUNED!
so the first pull we made 294HP and 312TQ on 9.4psi
after some tweeking
we got 339.4 foot lbs of torque and 303 HP. at 12.5 psi (granted the peak was like 14)

NOW.
before you all are like "well thats not that much more than a stock STi"
i want to say a few things

1) this tune was intended for a flat torque curve. not peak numbers. my curve is much flatter than a stock STi.

2) our dyno is very conservative. we dyno'd a motor at 480hp, and when they put it in a car they made 550WHP.

3) im not sure what kind of power the trans will handle. so we are trying to keep it safe.

i also want to say that
the intercooler was very impressive. the highest our intake air temp got was like 80 something degrees. at times it was as low as 68!!

video of the pulls to come this evening.
here is a vid of the dyno sheet to prove it.

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/01/th_20130105_174419-1.jpg (http://i251.photobucket.com/albums/gg281/gulfport_chad/20130105_174419.mp4)

look at that torque curve! its flat as a board!! from like 1800 rpm to 6200 it doesnt go below 250ftlbs!

VERY nice plots

lord flashheart
01-06-2013, 11:51 AM
thanks guys!
we could have upped the boost to 15 psi and put a tad more timing in but the turbo tanks at 5000 RPM. so the low end torque would have been like almost 400 but the hp would likely stay the same in the top end. so we left that torque on the table to keep it flat.
the tuner is going to play with it to put the final touches on it.

Wheel power numbers sometime soon.
just waiting on my wideband o2 and my new fuel pump.

the video i made doesnt work :(

so here is the raw footage.

i cant, chris wants to play with some of the anti-lag settings n shiz.

diesel style numbers!
thanks its all about VE of the turbo vs VE of the engine. it just so happens that the VE of the turbo is peaked just before the VE is peaked on the engine. so you can get 340ftlbs from 12psi.

Sweet build, man. Nice work!

Feel free to put that motor in my BH at any time, kthx
thank you. my co worker has a BH and i am really starting to dig the body style.
i think that may be a project down the road. (after the 4runner rock crawler and turbo corvette)
nice! I was wondering when you where gonna get some number on it.

we hit some rough patches with some of the software and tuning portion, as this is a new system for our tuners.
he wants to tweek it just a smidge more so assuming everything is good aproximately 7days from now i will be sticking it in.

i also finally got my NEW deatchwerks DW200 fuel pump :D

Damn that is some expensive oil! $16-$21/quart shipped. Talkin $90 oil changes. I was gonna get some but ill just let my engine run its course and take that money I saved using mobil1 and build a new one.

lord flashheart
01-11-2013, 07:49 PM
where are you buying it from???
some of the XP synthetic series oil is almost that much,
but the HR synthetic are $100 for 12 quarts.
the BR are also about 107 for a 12 quart case.
my math is a lil fuzzy but thats like 9 per quart.
alot of the boys down at the track run their own blend,
of 40% BR or HR joe gibbs, then 60% their brand of choice (moble, purple, valvoline, GTx ETC.)
and thats a pretty good way to go, their website has a 'blending guide' on it somewhere.

kimokalihi
01-11-2013, 08:44 PM
That's summit racing for the xp6 stuff in your pic. And other places online that popped up in google shopping.

lord flashheart

All the prices ive found are on joe gibbs website. I order direct from them.

lord flashheart
01-12-2013, 12:27 PM
Also i use Xp6. When i go to the track. Around in my wifes outbacks and my 4runner i use hr-1
Or blend it.
If you dont push your motor pretty hard i wouldnt reccomend the XP6. Its like putting 116octain in your lawn mower... It doesnt need it.
HR conventional is a fantasic oil for our cars and its like 7 bucks a qrt.
Besides last time i checked the mobil1 synthetic is like 11.
And i know its cheaper that a comparable royal purple or amsoil.
If you just use penzoil (cringes) then by all means use penzoil. But if you run mobil1 or royal purple or amsoil... Take a look at joe gibbs.

kimokalihi
01-12-2013, 01:08 PM
Ok cool. I get mobil1 at walmart for $25 for a 5 quart jug. Ill check it out on their website. I need an oil change anyway.

About the subaru bearings issue, are they really an oem problem or is it just custom built engines that have them? Seems to me I only really see them going out in peoples built engines and not as much on the stock engines. I guess the wrx and sti guys it happens to but I don't see it on the older engines like the ej22, ej20 and ej22t engines.

lord flashheart
01-13-2013, 03:24 PM
yeah thats the mobil1 conventional.

we build roughly 4-7 subarus a week, more than any other engines. we sell about 2-3 used ones a week.
i would estimate that 90% of them are rod knocks, stock engines with under 135,000 miles.
it is a huge problem with subarus. compare the bearing width of any 4 cylinder engine that produces 160+ HP.
subarus are tiny, the width of a subaru bearing is comprable to the suzuki G16, toyota 3E, 3s-fe etc. all of which produce well under 150HP.
the EJ engine started life as a 1.5 if i recall correctly. the kept upping the displacement to get more power,
with out increasing the surface area of the bearing. subarus 'solution' has been to keep upping the oil pressure.
the early ej engines were perfectly happy at 25psi oil pressure. (tipically 20-50psi is the avarage range for most engines)
the newer EJ25s have a range of 75-110. depending on weight and temp. my ej25 is usually about 90 when you start it, and comes down to 70 when it goes closed loop.

there are plenty of engines that have under 20 psi oil pressure and never have any problems. for hundreds of thousands of miles.
yet subaru has problems with 60+ psi after 110k?
there is a serious problem with subaru design. using hi-performance bearings (ACL) is a way to help combat the issue.
ACL uses a special zinc plating on all their bearings, which gives it the brown color.
the benifit is under heat and load zinc becomes a super lubricant. thats why all the oil companys make a big stink about it.
this just helps, under dry starts, and when the oil is hot, and the viscostiy is low, it will protect the bearing itself. if the crank contacts the bearing. thus far, ACL is the only company i have seen use that coating (keep in mind that cosworth, and engine pro are made by ACL)

kimokalihi
01-13-2013, 04:45 PM
I see. That makes sense. Would you say then its mostly just a turbo engine problem then? Not because of the turbo but because of the extra power the turbo makes? Seems the NA subaru engines easily go 200,000 miles with average maintanence and some go 3-400,000 miles.

lord flashheart
01-13-2013, 07:17 PM
thats true with the old subaru stuff. but the 00+ i dont see many make it over 200. the 06 and up, (EJ253) shit the bed at 90k ALL THE TIME.
my grandpa bought a 06 outback, brand new. babied it. mobile1 synthetic oil changes at the dealer ever 3k.
ever thing done by the book. rod knock at 106k.
we see examples like this all the time. it has NOTHING to do with the turbo.
the old 2.2 would go forever because they didnt make much power.
tipically what i see is:
22e is good for 350+
the 25D is usually good for 225k.
the 251 is good for 190.
the 253 is good for 125.
205 good for about 200.
the 257... 140.
again.. this doesnt mean that you cant do 300k on a EJ253 im just saying i havent seen it, and we build an awful lot of them around 120k.

01-13-2013, 07:21 PM

^shell rotella in my personal experience, along with many oil analysis posted on the interwebs, holds up fantastically. Ive had great success, I recommend it to anyone with a turbo subaru.

lord flashheart

Synthetic rotella is a fairly good oil. Particularly if you dont hot rod much and change the oil on time. It is infactthe oil i ran in my old subaru.

my basic statment is this. If you hot rod your turbocharged car you should be changing you oil 3k nd using a good oil. A racing oil. They are designed to hold up to the heat. Turbochargers can get upwards of 1200+ degrees. That will turn you standard oil to goop in no time.

I take oil seriously. I have built alot of subarus and have had a extremely low defect rate by using good oil and bearings.

Mobil1 was a fantastic oil up untill 2years ago. Its still a mid grade in my book.

Have you experienced any noticeable throttle lag with your FMIC?

lord flashheart
01-26-2013, 01:36 PM
Thanksguys.
Well its not drivable yet.. However on the dyno spool was fantastic, same with throttle response. How ever i am using a small turbo with ball bearings. Which is why i can make 280ftlbs at 2500rpm. If it was a ebay/china turbo with a .80 A/R compressor... Spool might not be as nice.

Thats interesting fmic plumbing..

lord flashheart
01-26-2013, 01:46 PM
The biggest critism i have with the fmic is the pipe fitment. Alot of modification has gone into making it fit in a appropriate manner. (meaning not sitting crooked or too low that it will get fed up on stuff.) other than that the cooling was awesome!
We did a 15psi load test for about 45 seconds at 3500 wot. The turbo and headers were glowing. We had 78-85 degree temps. It was impressive for a cheap intercooler.

Why not just swap with the ecu of the motor/engine you're using...

I knew the old EJs were tough little pieces of machinery but I didn't know that the new EJs were that bad.
22Es are about as tough as Volvo B5s (850 N/A I5) but 253s & 257s are horrible for high mileage engines.
Do you think that the increased oil pressure over the years has a lot to do with the bearing failure, other than the lack of required increase on the bearing surface?
It is true that more power = more stress on internal components.
In regards to your statement of Subaru increasing the oil pressure, I've heard from several people that too much oil pressure can cause "foaming" & such, which doesn't lubricate them properly.
Could this have anything to do with the short Phase 2 EJ integrity?

I have an 11mm oil pump from my 22E but that is because I wanted to make sure that the 25D heads had as much oil as possible under any & all conditions.
I don't necessarily drive my car hard but I do act a fool with it here & there.
Also, I notice that when I used 5w-30 oil, the heads were quite chatty but 10w-30 shut them up.
I do plan to install an oil temp sensor & oil pressure sensor to find out exactly what's going on in there.
As for oil, what do you recommend for hybrids because I keep trying to find the "right" oil so I can stick with it.
I like the Rotella T6 I'm running on now but I'm looking for something a bit tougher.

^ I believe thats why so many people have had great success with a heavier weight oil than subaru would ever reccomend.

lord flashheart
01-31-2013, 05:33 PM
I personally believe that avcs has to do with it. When we are on the dyno nd the avcs kicks in the pressure drops for a sec. While the pressure control valve catches up. its a theory of mine nothing more as i dont have a significant amount of evidence to support it.
As far as foaming goes the only time i really see the foaming affect in subarus is in extenuating sercumstances.
Over fill the motor and the crank shaft will whip it up or airirate the oil to look like foam.
Similar effect if your oil pump sucks a little air. Ie bad pickup seal or whatever.

And lastly when you run e85, water methanol etc. The water or ethanol or methanol (or whatever) gets past the rings it can whip up into a baby poo colored foamy oil.

I personally like heavy weight oil.

nice progress...also tuning my BG aiming for 300whp. here in kenya we get lots of rod knocks too...quite alot. but its got nothing to do with FHI engineering. it all comes down to fuel octane. here in kenya all our subarus or rather most get imported from japan. and the japan ignition timing is realy aggressive because of the fuel quality.
put 93 oct on a jdm scooby especially STi models and they will knock till the IAM doesnt realy max out the ignition advance. what we usually do especially rally cars, is we remove 4-5 degrees of timing then we add abit of fuel.
in my opinion though, the ej207s take more beating than late model gc8 engines. since their knock control is more robust.

So i put the car on the dyno for your veiwing pleasure.
But we scattered the center differential. The cause is currently unknown.
One theory is that the subaru dealer looked up the transmission code wrong and gave me a incorrect ratio. Another theory is that is was an old ass worn out diffand it was just its time to go. Yet another is that the previous owner of the trans ran it out of fluid and chewed it up so when we put power to it it shits the bed.

3.9 is good for highways but you're going to miss out on the acceleration bit.
Not that you should be worried about acceleration with the power level & tq you're producing.
That tq curve does seem like it would eat through old transmissions like Sour Patch Kids though.

when i tuned my car i put a nice big lean spot at about 3000rpm and 10inches of vac. This helps with gas mileage.
If i keep my foot out of the turbocharger i have no problems getting high 20s.

Speaking of putting my foot thru the turbo... I raced a 2011 camaro today.... Its sad when a 18year old sedan with a 4 cylinder and a hair dryer beat a new 'muscle car'

The dyno thing was kinda lame cause the weather sucked.
It was also sad that the big power number of the day was a 2012 evo at 317whp.
The saddest attempt was the audi RS4. He was talking big saying he was gonna do 400whp and ended up with a heartbreaking 237whp.
This dyno is a very low reading dyno. Which is why i was proud of my 194wtq.

03-07-2013, 01:21 AM
those are rated at what? 400 flywheel horse power
? Tested without accessorys and thats brand new (and way way over rated) so we say without a tune up call it 5% loss ...so we will call it 388 even tho 12hp is on the lowend.
Now u loose 13.8 to altitude at 4600ft. But we will do 12% for benifit of the doubt. That puts you at about 340chp.
So the quattro isnt very efficent at getting power to the wheels. Most people use a 30% rule on them. But for the sake of argument we will use the sandard 25% for awd transmissions. Puts you at 250 ish.
Also ever other car was right on par. Stock STi put 230 ish down right after. A camaro ZL1with headers and a exhaust and cold air intake did 530whp the day after. and its rated at like 580.
Every car we have put on that dyno has been right on the money.
Its just that audi builds peices of shit. I raced one at the track and it was increadibly slow.

Shift boot.

just got my car off the dyno.
318WTQ on my 14 psi map. (Street map) on the same dyno that the audi RS4 did 250whp. :D
same dyno that stock WRX STi tipically does 230WHP
i could have pushed it harder and switched to my 18psi (race map)
but my laptop with the tune was at home i didnt want to go
get it.

however its disapointing how fast this turbo falls on its face.
it made 265whp and it was absolutely maxed out. the torque
peaks at 318tq, and then it just falls.. by 7400 its only making 80wtq.
so i need a turbo that can maintain that torque curve.

Or shift earlier and keep your motor happy

lord flashheart
03-25-2013, 09:24 PM
Well i shift at 6200. But the motor is built to be happy at high revs.

Besides i would like to have a good horse power number.
Horsepower is torque multipied by time. Which in the case of engines time is revs. rpms are a unit of time So if you dont have the time(rpm) torque is king. But engines that have time to make more power is important.
I want more torque because by prolonging the torque curve it wont increase the load on drivetrain components much but will make much more topend power and ultimately be much faster.

Engines make torque. Horsepower is a vistigial number but that doesnt mean its trivial.

1055
03-25-2013, 09:54 PM
Horsepower is the rate at which you apply torque to the ground. Go bigger turbo for more top end, lose the low end.

My point is... the components will last longer at a lower rpm at the same power levels than they would at a higher rpm. Its a flat 4, not a rotary lol.

EJ22D
03-25-2013, 10:37 PM
I want more torque because by prolonging the torque curve it wont increase the load on drivetrain components much but will make much more topend power and ultimately be much faster.

Yes, this is true, but a sudden torque spike will break things at that speed in short order.
It looks like you are preventing that by keeping the tq early & flat so the force on the drivetrain created is very minimal.
I know very little about advanced tuning but I know enough that your car is tuned pretty damn well.
How is it that you are boosting that early, keeping the Tq that flat, & carrying it that far through the rpm range?

lord flashheart
03-26-2013, 01:03 AM
The increasing rpm to achive POWER raises load on internal components by 30% over increasing barometric pressure to achive the same power level but rpm is easier to achive ever try to get 25psI @2300RPM? Especially without a supercharger. i agree with your point. And my point is there are 2 things that go into the hp formula. TorqUE AND rpm. If you lack torqie you can still go fast. You just gotta make up for it with rpm. My car still makes 220hp @7500. yet has no tq. And im fine with that i just want more top end.

I am aware of that. I want to increase the torque in the topend. the turbo is going to do what its going to do. Especially with a manual boost controller. I cant move the tq curve or control it much. if you want to move the torque curve later in the rpm band you need to change the VE of the engine. Which is effected very very little by the tune. My options are 272cams, bigger turbo, lower the compression etc.

Also i will post up the video as soon as i can. As far as the transmission and what it can handle... I needed to know the limit of what it could handle. So before i pit the new transmission in my car we did about 30 awd burnouts. The trans took it like a champ. So im not super worried about a lightning fast spool up breaking my gearbox.

my wife keeps the car budget on a pretty short leash, and the car has tried to kill me a bunch of times before (like the time it lost a brake caliper while racing thru a canyon) .. so im gonna say a widow maker for sure.

Damn looks sweet, how much power do you think your going for with this setup?
well ill be running the VF23 for a little while till i can fabricate the rotated set up. should be low 300whp and mid 300s wtq.

Those pin mods are pretty cool. It's like a financially savvy man's EJ257. What kind of fuel are you going to use?
for sure. ive done this before on some hondas, its a pretty cost effective upgrade, and i had a EJ251 block sitting around so i figured why not. when i do the rotated set up, ill be doing 1000cc injectors ill have 3 maps, pump, 105 and maybe a 110 with spray.

Jealous man. Looks like its been a lot of fun with this beast.
yea it is. every time the power increases there is exponential increase in fun, fear, and fights with the wife. but when the guy in the STi cant keep up.. it makes it worth it.

What intake manifold (and tube) and what P/S pump and tank are you using?!?

the intake manifold is a EJ20K JDM manifold from a 98 STi (i think i have some extra ones for sale if you want one) and the power steering is also from a 98 STi.
your turboing your car right? let me know if you have any questions.

so one of the bolt holes for the timing belt idlers on the block is super stripped out from the previous owner of this block. i was about to put timing on it and drop it in when i found it.. its too big for a helicoil or a time-sert. i have to make a custom thread insert to repair it..

That sucks...

I just finished an hg job on an 01 Outback and the bone head that worked on it before stripped out all 3 mounting bolt holes for the bracket. Then he used a 13mm head (non automotive) bolt for the alternator adjustment. ugh...

yea its fairly simple.
first thing to do is go to home depot and get some 7/16 aluminum rod. do NOT use steel because they have a different thermal dynamic.
next you need to drill holes for the pins. i used a mill but i think you could do it in your garage with a drill press if you go slow.
measure rod and select a drill bit that is about .010-.012 inches smaller than the rod. put a piece of tape on the bit about 3/4 of an inch from the tip. (this is so they are all about the same depth.)
cut your rod so you have a little extra sticking up from the deck surface.
heat up your block in the oven, and press the pins into the block. (you gotta be fast, before the pin expands from the heat. also a little bit of oil doesnt hurt either)
once they are all in, have your machinest bore and hone (or just hone if your re-using pistons) because when you put the pins in the bore is no longer round. once its bored out, surface it.
boom done.

Thanks guys.
I needed some new gauges. The sunpro autozone special wasn't cutting it. (The volt, temp, and boost gauges fail..)
So I reluctantly shelled out for EQuus gauges. I'm super happy with the quallity and they look way better. These pics look shitty and don't do them justice buttrust me they look fantastic. Now that I have some gauges that work I need a gearbox (someone sold me one with a bad Iimputshaft bearing :/....)
Then I need to fix a broken door handle.. gut it..give it a good paint job (I know I know don't laugh.) Put coilovers on it and tune it.

today i was thinking of how to remedy my imput shaft problem. and i ended taking the center differential out of my old 8 bolt (phase2) outback 5 speed. the reason i took that trans out of my car is because it had a bad center diff.. i took it appart and cleaned everything so i wont have any chunks of the old diff causing problems. now i plan on welding the spider gears up, and putting it back in, then putting it in my car.
i also have some bad axles to take apart that i will serve the purpose of the RWD conversion.
as much as i would like to weld the rear diff as well, i am going to leave it open in a last ditch attempt to keep axles together. if i come across a good deal on a better rear end with axles i will take it.
stay tuned for pictures

I was actually going to ask you why you didn't spring for the 6-speed with DCCD so you could change it to 10-90% in the rear and run it.

I guess you want 100% rear?

lord flashheart
01-02-2014, 10:13 PM
Well actually i would get on board with that however it was just a combination of factors that led to this.
1) i have been getting burned out with my car and wanting to start on my next project, which i am planning on a rock crawler build for my toyota (Solid axle, 02 tacoma front end supercharger etc.) So alot of the money and motivation has been robbed of my subaru. Which means no dccd.
2) the transmission in my car is junk so i need a quick and inexpensive solution. Since i had a trans with a bad center diff. This was my solution. My rwd conversion has cost me aprox. $0 so far.
3)ive always wondered what my car would be like RWD.

Hey fellas its been a while. I suppose its due for an update.
After i wrecked it i took a break from it. Now, i am taking this time to repair the car and get all the weird glitches and whatnot figured out. I guess a few Pics can hurt. People who followed this build know i have attempted to paint it like 3 times and had epic failures every time. So we are trying again. I bought some nice, quality paint, and am paying a guy to spray it.
Ive been sorting all the stupid little issues with the wiring in it. The only one i cant seem to solve is my tachometer. I also did a new headliner in it, and a few other things.

Im about 15-20 hours in sanding so far and not even 20%. The rust and dents are very time consuming. Pictures of said dents and rust:

I just picked up the paint.
Its this metallic silver. Its supposed to be this metallic grey in the dark, and when the sun hits it its super bright silver.

A tip for anyone who is looking to paint their car, go to a body shop and ask to buy some left over paint. Thats how i got this for so cheap. Its enough high quality paint to do a car, but it was less than $75! Down side is i didnt like the plain silver so i had them add some grey on the spot to darken it up.. so this is a one off color. If i need to repaint a fender and i dont have enough left over..im F'd.

You might need to remove the windshield to get all the rust out. I've seen several subaru's with a rust on top like that. All probably cause by a blade thru the seal and over time the water gets underneath and rust it out.
I think you were asking about paint on rs25. That silver is nice. You might want to do a test panel first to see how your metallic arrange itself before doing something big. I would suggest painting the car panel by panel for better results but it may not match when you put them back together (different air pressure/the angle the mettalic sprayed/more or less coat on some areas). Is it single stage or base/clear? Is the color reduced already? Also what gun are you using?
Yeah alot of body/paint shop have excess premix paint (old inventory/mixed wrong or the customer never picked it up). I have alot of different base paint and I put them all together. Now I'm just looking for someone to see if they like it so I can spray it for them lol

Hey Flash, A thought on your tach issue. I know your running an AEM Ecu and remember you saying that you don't use the crank sensor. That could be your problem there possibly. Your tach should run off that signal iirc. Idk if you have that all unhooked or not.

Yea I have a buddy who is a good painter and we are going to use his stuff and he will be doing the spraying. I might rent a booth.. Might. It still needs to be reduced and its base coat clear coat.

As far as the tach is concerned, I Dont use the cam. The computer uses the crank to trigger and monitor the revolutions. The cam is just used as a sync. To help the computer know which revolution its on since the computer sees it as 720 degrees instead of 360. However I use wasted spark so I it doesn't matter on my engine if I Dont have the can to sync up.

Hey I was on YouTube and saw your video on the tach. I would try a potentiometer. I gonna make a suggestion from my music experience haha but the 50k pot you are using is a very narrow sweep and would make adjustments difficult because it's not precise enough. I would try a 250k or 500k pot and see if that makes a difference. They have a wide sweep so you can adjust more precisely and thats what they use on guitars.

Ugh.. I dislike body work.
This is the 3rd time I've tried to paint this car. Some where Reason is thinking "how many times are you going to try to paint that hunk of junk before you pay a professional?" And the answer is, as usual, one more time.
This time tho I have a friend who has painted a few cars who will be advising me and helping me. I'm roughly 30% done sanding, 50% done with body filler. After that its a final sand, wash, mask, prime, base, clear.

Also Dont judge me, I'm not a welder but these welds are strong. I beat on them with a hammer to make sure.

I pulled the trim off and I kinda like the look. Anyone ever delete them? I have been thing about doing it but slanting so it leaves the lower crease.

BDAlex95

Leaving the lower crease would look off to me. If you follow the bumper lines it's better to leave the top crease, but I have no idea how that would look. I think you shouldn't remove them and keep searching for JDM moldings.

I'm psyched to see this one coming back after the wreck.
Will it still be RWD and wicked-powerful in its rolling, driving form?

 thanks

Nick scored it last fall.
Now to figure how to paint it. I'm not getting a qt or ruby mica and a gallon of hardener for it...and the rattle can crap (clear coat too) just oxidizes
so I'm in indecision for now. My matte black 2-tone oxidized in about a year, but it wasn't auto paint. And Moab's two-weeks from everwhere, so can't really get just anything here.

so it goes.

But you should be able to source a GT spoiler in not too long of time. As the low L, LS and LSi spoilers are the same, so are the higher GT and SUS spoilers
