Hey everyone new gear head here with a black on black 99 LGT Limited. I traded my truck straight up on this car. The KBB was about the same on my truck and his car, but I made out way better. The body is high with 158,000 miles, but the engine and tran have 89,000. I am a muscle car guy by heart, but it is nice to own a great AWD car that will respond great with mods. So far I have been working on the paint and body of the car. I washed it twice and hand dried. Clayed the car for about an hour or two and cleaned the wheels. These are the best pictures for now until I get some better days/sunlight for my good camera.

This is when I first got it.

Couple of things I have to work on. The wheels are ok, but the front drivers is starting to rust. I figured I will spray them or powdercoat them. I want to go tinted silver outside and go with the original gold on the inside.

These are the multiple scratches that I found on the car after claying it.

All Meguires products being used for the paint. I have ScratchX 2.0 first, then Ultimate compound, and last NXT liquid wax. Interior is now done with Armor All. More pics and updates to come.

Looking real good, man! Congrats on the purchase. You'll love that car (I have the same one but silver.)

These are marks on the paint from a sunroof wind deflector. They came with them stock along with the hood wind/bug deflector. I removed mine and had the same marks. :-( Nothing a little buffing or re-painting won't fix though!

Thanks man I will have to check yours out. I hope to build the engine to a lower compression and put some spool in.

I might have to google more pics of the sun roof deflector and decide if I want one or not.

Worked on the buffing and waxing today and let me tell you I hate doing cars by hand! Here are some pics after washing, claying, and buffing the car. I cannot believe it is the same scratched up bad paint swirl car that I bought.

Here are some front, back and side reflection shots. Don't forget this is before the wax. Those pics will be there tomorrow.

I keep my car as clean as I possibly can. However, that doesn't mean I won't get it dirty either. I like to have fun, but once fun time is over, the car is cleaned up nice and neat. \o/

Here are the differences between the two. All hangers wok except the one closest to the flang. Bending that one tomorrow. A bunch of you say that you loose power, but I will have to test it for myself. Doing a backflow test too. Sound really amazing though.

that spot is usually caused by the mud/grime/dirt/etc that gets caught behind the piece of weatherstripping that subaru attaches to the lip of the wheel well. (you can see it in the pic. looks like the rear corner of it is hanging down a bit right by the quarter panel/rear bumper seam) i've removed those two strips on all the subaru's i've owned and it helps to keep that from occuring.

nice bd! can't wait to hear some exhaust clips of the exhaust.

I do not think I lost power going from a 2" bosal catback (stock replacement) to the 3". I would say I gained power and it feels like it is not as restricted. I was able to chirp the tires (auto) today whick I was not able to do until today. The backflow test will tell along with a vacuum test. The ride with this thing was amazing! I need to get a sound clip for you all. Here is a picture installed at night. Looking for the best set of headders for performance and not sound (I have enough of that). This car is going to be mean after the heads and cams are done.

I would most definitely go with UEL headers. Otherwise, your car will sound like a Honder. BeeeeeeeeeEEEEEEEEEEEE! With UEL's, you'll get a much more rugged and aggressive sound all the way around. Like a more THUMP-THUMP-THUMP-THUMP large engine sound.

httrdd
01-19-2010, 05:12 PM
Thanks for the info eekay! I fugured that is why people buy the uels. As far as performance, is there any difference between the two?

1996Battlewagon
01-19-2010, 09:54 PM
Yep. UELs, even though they sound soooooooooo badass, are actually more restrictive than ELs. It's the design of the piping that makes the air flow easier on ELs. There's a graph on this site somewhere that shows it. I'll try to find it.

httrdd

where did you get UEL headers?

httrdd
02-03-2010, 06:41 AM
Rs25.com. I bought them with OEM gaskets and shipping for 90 bucks! That means I paid $50 for the used headers. I searched for weeks to find a good deal and then these came along. Can't wait for them to arrive.

I am on somewhat of a budget n/a build. Whick means that the less I spend the more I buy! :smt016

When i pulled my headers the first time I did this too, in the middle of Seattle. Loudest thing I'm sure my neighbors have heard in a long time...

Headers look good, but definetely do a couple coats with the silicone (I'm assuming you're gonna wrap them?).

httrdd
02-08-2010, 07:59 PM
Yea, but the baby will be asleep and I live really close to the other houses and I have to get out at like 600 to go to work. My garage is up my skiny driveway in the back. I figure I will just tale the Xterra to work and wait impaciently for the work day to end!

BTW I am going to do several coats of paint. Is heat wraping really worth while? I mean almost 50 bucks for the stuff at Advanced Auto. Is the gain that much better?

99gtlimited
02-08-2010, 08:13 PM
short answer... yes

it will sound much better, and seems to make a difference in low end- since it keeps the exhaust velocity up with the better heat retention.

It's not like the headers are that expensive, so why not make them as good as you possibly can? The wrapping really isn't that hard, and you can get 50' on amazon.com for around $42 I think.

Are those knockoff Borlas or the genuine Borla? If they're real Borla, the sidewalls should be thick enough to avoid the "sewing machine" sound that the thinner speedyrace/a2inc/ebay knockoffs suffer from.

httrdd
02-09-2010, 12:09 PM
Not even sure of the brand. There is no plate or it is not stamped anywhere that I can see. I would say it is a knockoff brand since they feel thin. I am going to just put them on and when I get more money together (since I am buying plugs, wires, and fuel filter.) I will take them off and wrap them. I just want to get them on! I am putting them on tonight, so expect a sound clip tomorrow afternoon.

FALSE.. I have Genuine Borla headers and had that sound. When I wrapped them it was quieter and the exhaust note changes. I highly recommend wrapping headers. From here on out every car I own will have wrapped headers. I'm also considering doing it to my motorcycle header.

99gtlimited
02-09-2010, 01:23 PM
+1

I agree with reason. Even if you don't hear that "leaking/sewing machine" sound, the wrap can have significant benefits, and for only $40-$50, it's well worth it IMHO.

My exhaust note changed significantly after wrapping, and I don't think I would ever want to go back now.

Was it still a significant gain in power and sound without it being wraped?

Huffer
02-09-2010, 05:13 PM
Sure. I mean, you're only getting 3-5hp with the headers, realistically. But the sound is nice. Low and rumbly.

99gtlimited
02-10-2010, 02:44 PM
yeah and without a good exhaust system behind them and an improved intake the difference in power is negligible, not likely to get much out of them alone.

so are the borla UEL headers the best to look/shop for or are there diffrent manufactures out there? i was thinking of doing the borlas my self but was hoping some one had a link to places to get them.(2000 legacy wagon L) ofcourse i would like them cheap as possible but i dont whant to buy knock off stuff, would rather pay good money for top notch stuff and not have problems with thinkness/compatability/corosion protection etc.

99gtlimited
02-21-2010, 11:42 PM
^^^ to be honest, the borla's are not that much better quality than the knockoff's, but they do come with the borla million mile warranty.

httrdd
02-22-2010, 07:05 AM
You need to search for 2.2l headers. But what I have read the knock offs welds on the flange hold better, but that is not always the case. For the price and what they do I would go with the knockoffs or have something custom made and wrap and spray them. Both are stainless steel.

B's Legacy Wagon
02-22-2010, 02:55 PM
ok cool started searching around for borla's they have part # 17183 looks like they will fit the 2.2l and 2.5 they all look like they are the UEL type just by the looks?
price varied from 350-380 looked like Jeg's had them cheapest for 350. what i was currious about now like 3 of the web sites i looked at listed borla headers as race only not to use on street or highway saying that they do not have DOT/EPA type certificates?? but the other web sites dont mention this at all.
Will these make it hard for me to pass my DEQ(oregon version/smog quality testing) any ideas? i thought well i could always keep my old OEM ones they not broke and use them for DEQ testing it like every 2 years i think around here.

Yea man there are a couple of threads that I have been taking a look at. I wiill be changing anything that I can get to. A shame that the engine has 93000 on it and a head gasket has to go. Oh well better doing it now rather than later down the road while the emgine is apart.

I might just put in a lightweight pulley while the engine and pullies are out. =)

the struts and springs are going in during this down time.

Not much just head gaskets. I was going to pull the engine anyways, so I am just replacing it with something bigger and better. I know I will not get enough for the bad engine. My plan is just to part it out. Should make a little more that way and give a chance for people to fix theirs with my parts. Enine had only 93,000 on it after all and ran fine before the headgaskets.

Where are you located?

the engine in my car is completely dominated. camshafts are siezed, broken timing belt, who knows what else.

a decent engine needing a headgasket isn't terribly scary at the moment, haha.

so will are you going to have a go at doing your own wiring or are you going to send it out?

also, i regret not spending more time to measure space for a radiator to see if i could find a cheap premade aluminum one to fit in there. i know misimoto lists all the dimensions for all the rads they sell. i will probably go that route when i refab mine. beats spending almost 500 on a custom one to get it to fit in without modifying the shit out of everything.

Here is an update. Engine is now out of the Svx. It took me and another guy about 3.5 hours to get it out. It would of been about and hour to an hour and a half less if the stupid exhaust bolt was not being stubborn and rounding off. I am currently removing power steering lines to make custom lines. I am replacing the seal on the tranny before I install the torque converter. Then the engine will be ready to drop in.

Here is some pics.

Everything bolts up mounting the engine to the tranny, but I believe there may be an adapter plate needed. I am researching that now. The power steering lines need to be specially modified from a hydraulics shop. The high pressure side is about a foot shorter. Wiring I can tell is going to be a pia.

StatGSR
03-14-2010, 06:27 PM
^ adapter plate for what?

also you can take the high pressure line off the svx cross member and screw it into your cross member and it will work. thats all i did, had to cut a braket off the line that made it get in the way but it should work just fine. granted my PS is still bypassed for the time being but all i should really have to do is put in a pump and im ready to go.

can you do me a huge favor and take some up close pics of the coil wire plugs and how they are mounted? (the blue/green/gray on both sides of the engine) i need to get them undone on both the legacy and my other parts car and its a pain not being able to get good access and not being able to tell exactly how to get them free from the mounts.

Also before you drop in the motor, make sure that the set pins on the engine and tranny match up right, when we first dropped mine we found that my tranny had pins in the same spot as my engine so we had to pull the engine out again to pull out 2 of the pins.

httrdd
03-14-2010, 07:07 PM
Not sure where I read about the adapter flex plate. I was looking at it and it seems that all sould match up. The pins look to be in the right place.

I will get you the pics as long as you keep giving me info :)

I have never done anything special for this (Lego trans to SVX engine)... I can't remember which TC to use though off the top of my head, but you have both so it shouldn't be a problem... go to the SVX site and search for the 4.44 conversion, it'll tell you which one to use.

Started to tear apart the Svx harness tonight. I have a pile of wire sitting here building up. I have been talking to Matt at Numbcuxconversions about what exactally to eliminate from the harness. He said I will basically end up with the ecu plugs and the fuel pump relay and main relay after all is traced and stripped out in the interior side. Thanks Matt. This guy knows his shit and I would recomend him to anyone. I would send out the harness if I was not so stubborn and cheap. Just follow the diagrams (lots of diagrams) and you sould be fine.

Nope that is where it sits. The trans arm is fullt conected. There is a great amount of room behind there though. The fan are not going to fit on the inside due to it being so tight. I am loooking for a wider radiator and slim fans so I can mount it like a FMIC. It coming together nicely.

Yep, just dropped it right in. It was not that bad at all. The only problem I had was lining up the motor mounts to drop in, but that was just because the hook was positioned off a little. A/c is coming off this weekend sinceI did not even wire it in there.

Black high temp paint for painting the manifold, alternator or what ever else I can find. Red for the subaru stencile symbol on the manifold and for the calipers. I decided to go with the black and red theme. Wheels are going to get stripped and painted black with red where the gold used to be for the limited rims.

Here is an update. Did not have too much time to work on the project so not much has been done. I am installing the wiring and putting connectors together today. Cutting two more holes in the firewall for the new harnesses. Picking up all new fuel, power steering, and radiator hoses. Double checking everything is bolted up correctly. Also started working on my cf trim pieces. What I did is made a pattern with blue painters tape, cut out the pattern, stuck the tape to the cf and cut out pieces with razor knife. Used hight temp hair drier to get the pieces to stick nicely. Trimmed off what needed to be trimmed and smoothed it out. I am going to find a sealer that will hold the adhesive for a long time. Maybe a clearcoat or something.

NO MORE WOODGRAIN!!

Well the a/c compressor and condensor are gone, along with any other parts of the a/c. I am going to see if relocating the battery is worth it or not since the car will be on a good suspension.

I am thinking about doing a special project down the line with a n/a porsche engine and a second gen leggy. I am considering replacing all the front panels with carbon fiber and a wide body kit to make a more 50/50 weight distribution. I want to make it look like a factory one off though.

I cut two holes from two existing holes with a hydraulic hole cutter. The first hole was where the RHD a/c would of went. I just punched out the middle and pulled through the grommet. Second hole is where the a/c lines ran to the evaporator. I punched out the middle again with the hydraulic punch and pulled the other grommet and wires through. I am in the middle of reconnecting the engine connectors according to the fsm. Here are some pic from today.

Yea with some help here and there. Sometimes just some electrical advise over the phone. Radiator came today and it was exactally what I was looking for. Here is what I had to do to make it fit right in the same as a stock one would go.

Remove power steering pump, remove alternator, remove (unused ) a/c clutch, shoten idel pully nut and bolt about a 3/16, cut down the inlet and outlet of the radiator about an 3/16 inch, trim the standing tabs on the bottom of radiator and the sucker slides right in and holds against and tucks under the radiator support. Pics to follow later. The only thing I have to do now is make an adapter sleeve for the 1 1/2 inch to 1 1/4 inch reduction of the inlet and outlet. Pics!

Sorry for the horrible description but I am hella tired!

After spending 2 hours with my local parts guy getting ideas on what fittings will fit the radiator I found this (pic below). He had it sitting in the back and it says it is from a chrysler. These are 2) 12volt reversable fans. :smt005 The one side motor was replaced and not low profile so I had to loose it for right now. I took the top of the fan holder and cut out the spot in which the hood latch would go and fits perfectly right in place. Very happy in with how they fit!

I also found myself some hoses I could cut and modify to fit the inlet and outlet of the radiator. I was able to reuse parts of the Svx to hose for the top half, but the bottom half needed to be custom. I now have the 1 1/2 inch from the svx engine going to the 1 1/4 inlets of the radiator using pieces of hoses to make bushings. Worked great. Put m power steering pump and alternator back in and tightened up the belt. More work to come tomorrow.

I was just thinking that the prestone solution is STILL meant to be used in a system with a radiator cap (ie. to release pressure above a certain PSI so you don't break stuff ). So another, better, solution would be:

http://www.moroso.com/catalog/categoryd ... code=29014 (http://www.moroso.com/catalog/categorydisplay.asp?catcode=29014)

so you could still run the cap, but in a non-factory location.

other option is to use something like the wrx/sti radiator fill tank, and splice that into the high point of the radiator.

I went with this one today and installed it. Had to shorten it a little but it is clamped together very tight. I bought 12 dollar temperature sensor that the Sabb radiator had to trigger the fans to come on and it works great. I was trying to come up with a way to trigger the fan to come on and this fell right into place.

I ran the car after I looped the heater core hose for about 10 minutes. I am sure all my neighbors within a 1 mile radius hate me right now. We revved it up a little to hear it and it runs pretty smooth.

Durring the radiator squeeze in I punctured the raidator in a small spot. One tube is pinched and has a small crack. Repairing it tonight and will test it again. We cut the top of the radiator support to get the rad out and going to make two brackets to hold it back together. Just makes things easier. I have some pictures I will post after I reinstall the rad.

Here are the pictures promised. The first picture is the Moroso and a cap with vent. Second picture I had to cut the T to fit in in a tight location. It is very firm and clamped tight. Engine still has wiggle room. Also you can see on the one side how we cut the rad support for easy removal when needed.

The third picture shows how awesome the temperature sensor works to give power the fans when needed.

Last picture says it all. Time to put her back together!!!!!

It has been about 5-6 months since I started, but I took off about 3 months due to the summer heat in a metal roof garage.

We need to meet up some time for sure. I will show it to you in person and make you want to find the money for one. I spent about 0 dollars on this swap and still have more to part out.

Did you do the wiring yourself or did you hire someone else to do it? And approx. how much time would you say you spent only working on it? If you worked on it 24/7 from start to finnish how long would you say it took?

I always said if I bought another Subaru I would want the H6, but this would be so much more fun that buying one

I merged and stripped the harness myself with some over the phone help from numbchuxconversions. It was challenging, but I like a challenge. Time spent was basically from 830 PM to midnight a couple of days a week and some time during the weekend. You could prob finish one of these in about one or two months if you work your ass off. I have a little girl that took up most of my time.

well my prediction is that you are going to get really bored (with not having anything to work on over the winter) and decide to supercharge it! you know you want to.

Oh I think I will build n/a for now, but most likely s/c it down the road. I have to work on my 18ft f/s restore. I want to be pushing all 150hp down the lake next year.
