Welcome back richysteele! I would of went for the 265 hp GT! How are you liking it?

I made my first attempt at cranking over the Eg33 in the Leggy and no fuel supply. I was thinking air, but when I pulled the injector supply hose I did not even feel air pushing out. Going to check over the fuel pump relay signal wire tomorrow after work. Hopefully a start vid tomorrow night.

There is actually a control module for the hazzards and turn I believe. It is located behind the dash plate where the check conector is at.

Waged an epic battle with the driver's side swaybar mount. I guess I cross-threaded the rear bolt on the bushing bracket, and it snapped off at some point, then the stump of that bolt conveniently rusted and fused with the welded-on nut. So I drilled it out and just put a new nut and bolt on over the old welded-on one. Victory.

05-20-2010, 04:08 AM
^ Who, me? If so, the Legacy GT is available in North America, is it not? Apart from the Japanese 1994-2004 model years, as far as I know. And as far as I've heard, the NA market brought out the U13 Bluebird as a 2.4 litre - and btw, holy shit, why would you need such a large engine in a Bluebird of all cars, anyway? Almost getting up to Skyline territory, there! Mine is just a lowly 1.8 litre in comparision.

And as far as my girlfriend's Daihatsu is concerned, obviously you perceive the three-speed automatic 1990 Mira in a different light than I do

In my mind, the flow chart is pretty simple.

Did the car come to the states?
Yes => It's somewhere between okay and crap.
No => It's probably (98% chance) freaking incredible to the point that tiny American minds would collapse upon attempting to merely comprehend its awe-inspiring existence.

Over the last three days.. Got the car aligned, put on a fresh set of Falken Sinceras on the front, got my state inspection to be street legal again (until we become a smog control county), changed my oil, finished rewiring my grill lights to a central switch box, and put on my subaru rally pig stickers on my rear quarter panels.
That's it. She runs perfectly fine and tracks straight.

That crazy CEL that popped up about a low catalyst operating temperature warning has never popped up again.

I have as well as my friend and his diagnostician. The same code keeps coming up, cam sensor circuit malfunction. My friend thought it may have been the reluctor on the left side intake cam, but I guess that wasn't it. The car has been with him for almost 2 weeks now. He said mechanically it is fine. taking a day off form wrenching on the leggy. so far in the last week i've: pulled the transmission, split it, had a new bearing pressed on, put it back together; ruined the passenger steering knuckle by first breaking off the bolt that holds the ball joint in and then drilling off center trying to fix it, got a used knuckle that had a bad abs ring, had to get a new bearing pressed in when the hubs were swapped; put a new clutch in where gear oil was causing the old one to slip; finally installed the kart-boy rear sub-frame bolts; and have replaced the passenger side rear tophat.

still left to do: replace the drivers rear tophat; replace the shifter linkage because we had to cut the old one off*; throw the transmission back under the car; get new lower strut bolt from dealership because the old one jammed in the bused knuckle and the threads got ruined

total so far because a $60 bearing got worn out enough to start jumping out of 4th gear...
transmission internals:
input shaft bearings, input shaft seal transfer case gaskets $130
cheap transmission cocktail + grey permatex 34

transmission externals:
new group n mount 85
new exedy clutch 192
new shifter linkage 80
throwout bearing sleeve kit 152
used knuckle 70
new bearing+seals for knuckle 60
new lower strut bolt 3

labor
pressing of bearings 42

sooo if nothing else breaks i'm out ~850 for a $60 bearing lol

Been working on cars more lately, but not mine so much. Replaced my mom's Sienna front struts which actually went beautifully, just a couple minor details that made it easier than the Subarus I've done. Oh wait, never mind I had to remove the windshield wipers, cowl and windshield wiper motor assembly too, I almost forgot. It's just the brake line and ABS wire are held on by one bolt, unlike Subaru making you to take off the brake line; whose friggin' idea what that? Changed the oil and air filter in my brother's Camry.

As for Subaru action I've been helping a friend on and off with his swap project, '02 WRX engine into and '02 Impreza TS. Not going quite so smooth as you might think... Spent over an hour prepping wires to finish up my amazing grounding kit, it's going to be the most thorough, anally made kit ever! I weighed the kit and it's only 1.07 pounds. I fixed my grill and repainted it flat black again. Still need to fix my tweaked headlight.

Did my oil change on Sunday, first one I've ever done on a Subaru. I've decided it's more of a pain in the ass to do than on my Nissan Bluebird, but only slightly, mainly because there's no brake fluid line or hot engine block getting in between me and unscrewing the oil filter.
My Legacy first required jacking up the car to take the skid pad off, then I moved on to loosening and removing the sump bolt, and unjacking the car to let the oil drain out properly, and as the oil filter itself is mounted underneath the engine block, letting hot engine oil run over my hand after I'd undone it a turn or two, all the while trying to be careful that it doesn't fall off the thread holding the filter in, getting warm oil over everything including my face after you drop the filter in the oil catcher wasn't very pleasant! The o-ring on the filter was still stuck to the filter mount as well, luckily I noticed that, will have to remember that for future oil changes. After that it became fairly simple, I attached and tightened the new oil filter, screwed the sump bolt back in, filled my Legacy up with new oil, while checking for leaks from the sump bolt and filter, as you normally do. After checking those, I turned her on, double-checked for leaks, took her for a drive around the block, then after I returned, jacked her up again one last time to attach the skid pad again.

Haven't got anything planned for her until next Saturday now, when she'll be getting a visit from the alarm installer, after which I will finally switch insurance from my Bluebird to my Legacy, and she will become my daily driver

Hey you know those eBay generic oil catch cans? Yeah..

I had one forever on my car. It's obviously doing something because the sight glass is getting funky looking. I pulled it off and discovered that waste oil was actually sloshing around in there. So it works.
But when I went to install it, I accidentally dropped it and broke the plastic sight tube off completely. Made a little mess in my parking space.
So it's useless. Heat apparently caused the the little tube to harden and it just broke into little shards.

So I pulled all that crap out and ran my PCV hose the stock way.

I ordered a salvaged IACV after removing the old one. More of that in that thread I made in the NA thread.

Fixed the wiring on my aftermarket head unit that the PO had screwed up royally. For some reason, they had spliced in a second harness which was wired VERY wrong, causing epic distortion. Also ran the Aux cable out for my Zune HD.

Looked at the snorkus removal and determined I'll do that sometime this coming week. Drove my car for about 10 minutes and came back with a huge smile on my face. :D

Then, got frustrated because the power seat doesn't want to go fore and aft, only up and down. Any ideas?

LOL! I saw them live a couple of years ago. I honestly had no desire to see them, but I had the only competent car to make it to some festivel where they played with the Killdares (BK FTW! I got 35+ mpg on that trip).

Not my cup of tea really, but man can they make a person jump up and down.

Got my rear right seatbelt replaced under Subaru's lifetime seatbelt warranty. :smt023

I also picked up five of the rubber grommets that the hood support goes in because my friends keep breaking them. Freakin', $3 a piece. It's hard to get my parts guy to cut me a break even though he knows me by name and is really nice, it's because he's a 'by-the-book' kind of guy.

Was going to install the fuel pump I just got in from 95USsubaru (thanks a ton!) but I've just filled up my gas tank. Maybe it's low fuel pressure in the first place that's keeping my engine from being peppy, my pump makes a good amount of noise.

Yeah, thank you. It was low speed, and the car even drove half a mile before dying, so I'm a little hopeful. I just hope the timing didn't jump a lot. I also flooded the engine trying to get it started for four hours and got a backfire that blew the airbox apart. I guess I'll take off the timing cover and see if everything's aligned, then decide if I should take the heads off or not. This is a pretty rusty chassis, I could settle for picking up another cheap Subaru rather than repairing or swapping the engine, not that I can really afford either. I was being duuuummmb.

EDIT: Engine turns over by hand smoothly, and it looks like the cam shafts might be off by just one tooth if any. Going to shower, get a timing and accessory belt, then go to work (via Mom's van, but hey at least it's got new front struts so it doesn't handle like a boat).

I tried to crank the engine over but the starter just spins at a high speed while doing nothing to the engine. I wonder if I stripped teeth off it? Ugh, I hope not, and I hope ever more that I didn't break teeth on the flywheel.

This was a brilliant idea, if I do say so. I needed something to pull aggressively, something like a large scale slide hammer, so I made something like that using a tow rope tied to an ax. It worked surprisingly well, got the frame sort of where it should be now, even if it is mangled.

You would have a better chance finding an upper/lower rad support at a junk yard. Cut it out with a reciprocating saw and go home and cut out that junk and weld in the spare from the junk yard. Your looking at max 20 spot welds. I am sure you can find a friend or a friend of a friend to weld for you if you got the shakes.

PM me if you need some help.

I spent a couple hours today pulling and hammering it violently, it's almost where it needs to be. I may do that in the future but I'm trying to do this on as little money as possible at the moment (for the challenge? I'm kind of amused how mangled it is, but I'm weird). I just brought in a friend's dad's MIG Argon welder, but I'm really on the only person I know who knows how to use it despite it not being mine. That said I'm just learning, but doing okay with it.

Once my bumper cover looks like it fits and I've got a radiator and timing cover (and the hood is straight) it's back on the road, I miss it already. And I need a damn car, I don't want to drive my brother's cat piss smelling Camry again.

Since my last post, I've had the alarm installed, the insurance is now covering my BH5, I've taken her on a cruise to Auckland with a couple of mates, and I took her to work on Monday, so I'm pretty stoked at the moment

Plans are to take Eliza (as I've named my Legacy) to the airport on Friday evening to pick up the mrs, who has been down south on a university practicum; then drive her to the airport again on Saturday morning to drop my mum off, who's going on a five-week holiday in the Netherlands for my grandma's birthday; go to town again for my mrs' mate's 21st on Saturday night; and then final mission of the weekend to go to the mrs' olds' place for dinner on Sunday. Wonder if Eliza will make it without filling up, looking at the petrol gauge I doubt it, she's a bit thirstier than my Bluebird, which is unsurprising to say the least!

Things I still need to do: fix the tailgate trim back on, those little push screws that hold it in place are all rooted; replace the seals on the glass part of the tailgate, it tends to leak water into the brake lights from time to time; replace the bulbs in my dashboard, the bulb under the fuel gauge and the bottom part of my speedo is blown, while the auto electrician is at it I'm gonna see if he can replace the factory green dash lights with white ones, because green dash lights are way too '80s for my tastes; buy a new headunit and install the trusty sub and amp - Eliza will be the third car I've had that they're going into; and last but not least, wash, wax and polish her sometime in the next two weekends, I haven't done that yet since I've owned her, and also dust and vacuum the inside again.

THE BEAST IS RUNNING!!!!

After about 8 weeks and a lot of collective head-scratching, the Wagon runs!!

There were a few issues that were conspiring together to keep me from wanting to own a Subaru.

1) The injector clips where all loose, causing the fuel to lean out and richen up intermittently. We fixed the clips and that helped a little.

2) The timing belt was done by the previous owner. Too bad he was not a mechanic and had no idea what he was doing. He bent the reluctor ring and failed to change the tensioner. That being said, I don't think he actually checked the timing on it (or the belt jumped a tooth) because the timing on the crack was off by one tooth. ONE F*CKING TOOTH!!

Through all of the I was ready to strap some C4 to my car and set it off in a blaze of glory. Now that it runs right, I am ready to start doing with it what I have always wanted. And that is to go to DisneyLand!!

Glad you finally got that thing going!

Got a good deal at the salvage yard. I showed up to pick up a radiator for $50, then discovered it didn't include fans so I got pissy about it. I told the guy I was going it to pick a bumper beam, when I got back he told me he'd give me fans for cheap if I picked them myself, so I did. When I came back I asked about a hood and he said he'd cut me a deal on it, so I brought that in too and he let me have the hood, bumper beam, bumper impact foam, and fans for $60. The hood's a bit dented, but less so than mine was before the crash.

The bumper doesn't quite fit, it seems the big frame rails on the sides moved in 2cm, which means the impact was more severe than I thought. Sledge hammer...

EDIT: Bumper's nearly all set. Still need a center timing belt cover, hood latch, and grill!

Ugh, I'm getting sick of fixing this. Unlike many of you I can't stand projects that last more than a day, I just want it to be over.

I've got the bumper beam sort of lined up and the bumper cover fits on. New-ish hood is on (right color too, thankfully) so I have something to align the radiator support beam to, but I just can get it to move where I need it at all. Maybe I'll cut one out at a salvage yard like Chuck suggested after all, I need to get a hood latch anyway. The lower mounts for the radiator are over 2 cm inward of where they need to be, I'm just about resigned to cutting the pegs off the radiator and zip-tying it in place.

Update: I had typed that in the quick reply box early yesterday and never posted it! I've welded in the new radiator support and aligned the new hood latch, that all went better than expected. I scored a grill too while at the salvage yard, $10 because I bitched about the missing badge. The guys at Car World in Candia, NH are really great, wish they had more Subarus though.

Then I took the BG to my local drag strip w/ Zak and Seven.
The BG ran a 20.8 @ 69MPH w/ reaction time of .81 :-D Slowest car of the night.
Zak's BK ran a 16.8 @ 81MPH w/ reaction time of .74
and Sevens GC8 was running low 13's with lots of issues.

Well it wast exactly today... but over the last 8 days... I have done the following:

-Changed out spark plugs with a new set of V-Powers. The old platinums were worn to a point but not a trace of black on them.

-New fuel filter

-Oil change with Napa Premium oil filter and GTX high milage.

-Replaced burnt out HVAC light bulbs with radio shack ones. Disconnecting the HVAC above the passenger foot well saved me tons of time I am sure!! Thanks for all the write-ups and posts sl-i!

-Purchased flat(er) center console lid and hinge out of an outback along with its set of factory floor mats and a complete steering knuckle (with 2 year parts and labor warranty) from Specialized Parts Planet Subaru in Rancho Cordova, CA for $138.

-Replaced old steering knuckle with broken tone wheel with new one... ABS and cruise are back!!!

-Replaced old broken console lid with flatter (I am a larger person and love the extra elbow room!!) lid with perfect hinge and latch!!!

-Purchased a Rear Sway Bar from a 98 outback complete with endlinks and a 6 month warranty covering the endlinks from Specialized Parts Planet for $45. Installed last night... WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!!

-Purchased BD5 JDM projectors off of ebay for a total of $95 including shipping from Hong Kong! It certainly pays to contact sellers who didnt sell their headlights and make them an offer!!! I cant wait to get them in!!!

-I will be removing my snorkus tonight to see how I like it. From what I have read... I should notice a slight improvement with my 2.2 engine.

I put a lot of cruising miles on my car... hence most of the things being comfort and not performance. Besides getting fogs on the front... what else would you guys recommend doing?

My car is completely stock besides the things I have already mentioned.

It's not really for legacy. The header is for 2.5RS. I got 2 brand new legacy 2.5 cats. The cat back is for 02 WRX. After the second cat I had to use a 9-10 inch pipe to conect to the cat back. To mount the muffler I had to use the tow hook for a hanger. It actually was perfect for it. I just pushed a piece of heater hose over the hanger on the muffler before putting it through the tow hook. The hanger on the other side of the muffler was perfect. The hanger behind the muffler had to be modded. I cut about half way through the steel bracket. Bent it back a a couple inches, then filled in the gap where I cut it with weld. The mid pipe hanger was in he right spot. It sounds great!! I have been getting so many compliments!! Everywhere I go someone says something good about it. I got the cat back off of eBay. 155.00 shipped!! All stainless steel too! The header was 160.00 shipped! That's stainless too. eBay!!

Same setup I was going to do before I crashed into a tree (well, I was going to opt for the less expensive Centric disks). Did the front lines and started the rear only to find the lines were different, I had put the two rear lines on the front. https://sl-i.net/FORUM/ The pads and brackets needed filing to make them fit. Realized I overfilled my oil because I'm not qualified for the simplest of tasks, have to let some out because I don't have a hose small enough to fit in the dipstick hole.

On a lighter note, either the synthetic oil or my brake work yesterday made the car pretty peppy! Looking forward to seeing what the fuel economy does. I had bled the brakes and disassembled everything on the rear short of rebuilding the calipers. I cleaned, relubed, filed the pad ears so the could move with less than a hammer blow (which was needed to remove some), and adjusted the handbrake. Booya.

I recently sold my stock, automatic, 91 SS and bought a 5mt 91 SS.
While rebuilding the engine, I got 3 pistons back in no problem but I stretched the bottom oil ring of the 4th. :( Just got the replacement ring in today, so hope to make some progress finally.

Officially 2000 george washingtons later I had my left head gasket replaced with the head machined, along with water pump, timing belts (which apparently had holes in them?) Reshaved flywheel and new clutch alll have been replaced..HHHHUUGGGEEEE difference in how tight everything feels nowand I'm getting 1.5mpg better...that may be due to all the fluids being flushed and replaced (brake, powersteering, transmission, and engine oil) god I love having a subaru

You didnt have both done? yikes... I'm praying for the right one to stay put on you. I do love how everything feels when you have all new fluids though with a fresh clutch, it's just a wonderful feeling to drive.

Finished up some welding I had put off on the upper radiator support, resecured part of the bumper that got pulled off when hitting the ground on a very steep road shoulder, and installed new fog lights to the previous harness which had to wire breaks I had to chase down. Also took out my snorkus despite the risk (http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1471819). Didn't feel like working on my car today, at least that crap's done. Need to get a condenser and AC belt pulley then get the AC recharged so I can weather this hellish week.

My muffler broke off from the axle-back pipe. I picked up a WRX cat back for $40, now I just have to have my friend lengthen the mid-pipe and move and lengthen the hangers on the axle-back.

Oh yeah, I need to buy a radiator.

I beat the crap out of my GT on some dirt roads this last weekend... Took it camping for a night and then drove to OR to see a girl... Well worth the 800 miles I drove...

It was worth it for driving the car or seeing the girl? You know we're all hoping both.
