thats why you have a set of 16"s with winters on them! i have a set of snowflakes i've been debating on selling! haha
I have 2 sets of 16s and 1 set of 17s...technically 4 sets total as the wife's Accord has multi-bolt universal summer wheels too. :D
I should really offload a set of 16s...
pfft, that's small time.

Got a set of 2011 wrx wheels from the dealer for a STEAL! 17x8 with 53 offset. just have to figure out what tires I can run with no probs on stock suspension.
damn..... i love thoes wheels... got pics?
Wonder if those fit brembos? I like how those look too.

OBX CAI conversion kit has problems. I did a test fit, discovered that I'm missing a rubber pipe connector which I sort realized was going to happen with the extra pipe. What I wasn't anticipating was the CAI main pipe is about 3 inches longer than it needs to be. I'm going to have to cut it to be shorter to fit the MAF properly.
There is also I hole that wasn't in the picture for the air inlet to the IACV. Instead of an outlet bung, I'm going to have to get a threaded heater hose 90 degree connector and fabricate a outlet.
I'm not worried, I can build stuff. Just sort of mad about the unexpected set back.
But all wasn't lost, while I had my SRI off I found that I lost the bolt that holds my pitch stopper to the firewall bracket. I guess after the clutch install recently it backed itself off. Also explains the unusual vibration I was hearing. Put a new bolt in with threadlocker this time.

I was thinking the same thing. I think the offset might be too high to clear them.
Ordered a bunch of parts for the car today. I will hopefully have the car running better in the next week or so. My fuel economy blows (about 20 MPG highway driving at 70 mph), the suspension is shot, and my exhaust sound like a friggin' lawnmower. So I order eBay UEL headers, '04 WRX rear tophats to go with my Forester XT suspension, and OEM plug wires. Should be fun. :-)

Well, in the last week I've cleaned and replaced my MAF, replaced my TPS, IACV, coil pack, spark plugs, spark plug wires and my ECU in hopes of figuring out what the hell is going on with my super high idle (around 2,000 RPM!) and absolutely no acceleration and pure stuttering above 3,000 RPM. I'm completely stumped!

that sucks dude:( unknowns are the worst. just dealt with a passat that wouldn't start no matter what I tried or replaced, turned out to be a wire that was totally disintegrated, so simple but so hard to find. hang in there man, just keep trying till you get it. and remember to stay cool:) I always get pissed and end up breaking the very thing I'm trying to fix. :smt013

Checked everything... I can't find a single cracked line or anything. Although, if I listen real closely when the car is at a lower RPM I swear I can hear a leak somewhere. I have an appointment at 5250 Performance today so hopefully we can figure it out.

I never realised how much of a difference a set of OEM wires would make in my OBW. I swapped out the old wires ($30 Advance Auto Part cheaper wires, less than a year old) with the new wires I got from the dealership and it made a HUGE difference in the way the car ran and drove. Now I just have to wait for the rest of the parts I ordered to come in, and then I can start working on the cosmetics of the car.

The only reason I would avoid these is that they're drilled. If you plan on using these brakes for any type of hard driving you might find them beginning to crack from hole to hole causing a "connect-the-dots" sort of effect. Happens fairly often with drilled rotors. If you do buy them, just keep an eye out for that. :smt023

Slotted is okay. Drilled is bling. At least until we start talking about rotors that rival the blue book value of your car. Are those Powerstop Evolution pads any good? I know Hawks HPS, Axxis Ultimate, and Stoptech pads are good.

they only crack if you don't keep them clean. slotted is the best for upgraded street use, drilled you have to clean out the holes as brake dust and rotors are 2 different compounds that heat and cool at different temps and that's what causes the cracks. and as far as pads go I LOVE hawk HPS. but the biggest difference you can make over stock is getting braided steel lines! rubber lines expand under pressure lowering the brake feel and power.

+1 Haven't done them myself but I've done them on my friend's identical car, along with Axxis Ultimates (which are too aggressive if you ask me, unless you're really getting on them!) but the feedback is awesome. I found Stoptech lines for a good price, might get these myself later:

Pulled all the belts off to inspect what I believed was a timing belt failure. Turns out it was a seized idler pulley. It then got yanked out and banged up against one of the other idlers:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/
Currently wondering if that one needs to be replaced, being scuffed up like that.
Called the dealer and they have all the parts except the timing belt cover (which got all cut up by the same seized pulley banging around), so my plan is to go in and pick up everything and a compression tester. I'm thinking there is still a chance I didn't bend any valves.

If there is room you can take a dremal with a cutoff wheel and make a slit on opposite sides of the nut, just make sure you don't go into the threads. Then pry the two sides apart and the nut should fall off. Then run a tap over the stud/put in a new stud before reinstalling.

Oh so tired of it.
The speed limit in Upstate NY, on the hiways, is 65MPH. My speedo is off because of the shorter tyres that I was forced to put on the car, and at an indicated 80mph, my tach was sitting at about 3800 rpm. Not really conducive to fuel economy or drivetrain longevity. That may change when I finally do the lift and put properly sized tyres on it. I am looking to see if I can find 225/70R15s from my cousin.

Got the header in the mail yesterday and installed today, after I shoveled and de-iced my driveway. I have never finished a header install so quickly, and I had a bunch of turbo DSMs that were cake to do. I hade the header installed in about 45 mins on my back with hand tools. That is also taking into account the "persuading" I had to do to get it lined up. Sounds awesome compared to my stock, leaky header, but it isn't Subaru enough. I am running it through stock cats and a WRX cat-back. Time for some better piping.

Got my new water pump bolts so I put that back together and almost got the timing belt on. Ended up crossthreading the screw for the idler pulley!! Gotta figure out a solution - I'm thinking heli-coil at this point. Maybe I'll throw lock-tite on the outside of the coil just in case?

I stripped the hole for my idler, turns out it goes into a replaceable bracket. I got the bracket and realized it was different, so I had to get a pair of new bolts to install the new bracket, then everything was good.

don't use locktite on a heli-coil. Just use it the way it's intended and you will never have a problem with it. I have 4 of them in my heads holding the exhaust header studs in them (that was a fun day laying on my back under the car for hours carefully drilling out 4 seized steel studs and not walking off into the soft aluminum heads).

Turns out it wasn't as bad as I thought - just retapped it. Got the timing belt all put together, screwed in the compression tester. Cranked the engine, and I could tell even just by listening to it that I have 0 compression in all 4 cylinders :( Guess all the valves are bent.

Well or the timing belt is off? Hopefully? No? Pics or it didn't happen.
The whole story is an idler seized while I was driving on the highway, so the whole timing belt fell out. I decided to try throwing a new belt and idlers on, and cross my fingers that there was no interference that damaged the valves. Timing belt was all matched up - the three yellow lines were lined up with the notches on the cam pulley and the line on the crank gear.
There was also tons of oil in the spark plug well that I looked at...

ya I'm stock still as I just got the car, but my last outback had 215/75/15's that fit real nice but with the springs and new shocks I might go even bigger and get some wheel spacers  but I don't know what rims I'm going to use for the offroad tyres. Steam cleaned my seats out of the car, installed the rears (99 RS) and fronts (97 WRX). Man those are comfy. Wrestled with swapping the rear passenger hub (the bearings exploded - separating the hub from the spindle!). Those stupid pins that hold the drum shoes put up the good fight, but eventually I prevailed (even though my thumbs are worse for wear).
2 owners ago installed a wrx steering rack, so I was trying to figure out how he resolved the u-joint issue (the wrx one has different splines than a legacy, and is shorter. No welds on the rod between the u joints, so maybe there's a company that makes an off the shelf solution? My dream is to install an 05-07 STI steering rack (since the WRX one is a downgrade compared to the stock SS rack, as far as quickness is concerned) someday.

Didn't have an engine hoist, so I figured I'd try pulling the heads without lifting the motor. Nobody recommends doing it this way, but I don't know many people that have the SOHC heads in the Legacy either :) Legacy engine bay is bigger than the Impreza/Forester, and the SOHC heads are smaller than the DOHC heads that you usually find in the Legacy, so I felt adventuresome.
Success! It was unbelievably simple - unbolt the intake manifold, unbolt the exhaust manifold, take off the valve cover, 6 head bolts out.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/
There was EXACTLY the right amount of room between the heads and the body for the head bolts to clear out of the block. It was almost as if Subaru designed it this way - in fact, why on earth DIDN'T they use the SOHC motor??

Any change in the piston surface is going to create differences in cylinder volume...and combustion shape too.
Maybe clean up the piston surface with a degreaser and see how much damage is real.

i would replace. while your at it, hone your cylinder walls and replace your valves. most likely you will have a problem later down the road and burn oil and smoke.
Did a little cleaning and rotated the crank so we can see this better:

I don't see any damage...to the dish, but it wouldn't hurt to clean them up a bit.
Yeah I'll run out and get some over cleaner tomorrow and see if I can get some of that carbon off. Noob here hasn't stared at a piston in a while, had no idea the reliefs were that significant and that this is normal, not an indication of damage. Thanks everyone!

^^Good luck with the engine, Jey.
Put on my TrueFlow CAI on Saturday. Took it off on Sunday and cut it down to make an SRI, since I didn't like that my maf was almost in the fender. It runs better as an SRI with the stock airbox. It is nice to not have leaks in the intake track due to the ghettification of my old intake. I also sanded and painted the fuel filler pipe I got from prodriver1. Hopefully the rest of my stuff will be installed this week before we get hit with the Apocalyptic storm.

I have the same tires on my wagon, only had one experience on wet mud (did okay, could have been better) haven't had the chance to do much else other than drive though deep snow (did okay, car seems to be too light, tires can't dig down) since I've had 'em on.

haha, ghosts everywhere! Looks like a fun blizzard tho.
Got a P0106 last tuesday, my car is fine tho. I'm pretty sure it was just malfunctioning due to sub zero temperatures and now its 32 degrees outside! Drove around with my windows down lol, and like I said, the car drives fine. No rough idle or surging, just need to reset the ECU.
Put the rear strut bar back in, still have to paint it yellow to match the front but for now i don't care. Basically now I'm maintaining the car and not buying anything to mod it, til this summer!

got backed into in the Target parking lot :smt013
i think the subaru gods hate me. in the past 8 months, i've been backed into 4 times (i was never moving either, always stationary). 3 times in the RS coupe, and now once in my BK. at first, i though i just had bad luck with the RS, but apparently not.
why is it so damn hard to use a rear view mirror?! and why is it that people always try to say that it was NOT their fault, and that it was all mine, when i was parked every time i've been hit? i'm never parked illegally when it happens, always where i should be parked. is it just an over-abundance of extremely stupid people? or do i just have extremely bad luck/karma for some reason? i am really getting sick of it. the insurance checks have been nice, but i really would like to go for a while without being crashed into. it just stresses me out, and wastes my time. so PLEASE, people of MN... QUIT BACKING INTO ME!!!!!

its a good year, D44 front axle, 9" rear, great driveline, should be a C6 if it's an auto. Unfortunately in my area it would be eaten by cancer, but if not then it's a grab. SUPER easy to work on also. And more balls than a middle school dodgeball game.

Finally installed my "new" JDM wrx tranny. I'd been procrastinating so long since it's been miserable to work outside. Borrowed a buddy's tranny jack, that + a ratchet strap and my slow ass got it bolted in from start to finish in 1 hour. Note I don't have a motor in the way, that would have added to the time significantly. Put the Group-N and kartboy bushings on before it was installed, and managed to snap off only one bolt.

Attempted to change the fuel filter on the Tahoe. What a POS - the only way to get any tool into the upper bolt to remove the bracket is to unbolt the 2 enormous nuts to the TRANSMISSION CROSSMEMBER and wiggle out the stupid E85 fuel sensor. And even then, the only tool that fit is my 1/4" ratchet, and it had enough room to move the bolt - ONE CLICK AT A TIME. Attempted to use the assortment of quick disconnect tools at Autozone to disconnect it, and they were all the wrong size. Have to order the SPECIAL one for this vehicle. Argh!!

Theres a difference between putting HIDs in a OEM lens and actually retrofitting real projectors. Im not saying that you've done this. Just a lot of people simply buy plug and play kits and stick them in the OEM housings making the lighting worse.

Right, a lot of people don't understand the complexity of optics and think throwing more light at it is better. Headlight housings actually have very specific designs tailored to the type of bulb they house and the light those bulbs give off.

100% what I was meaning, as a matter of fact i plan to retrofit 5400k hid's into my projectors so i can get a proper projector and cutoff
there is a reason that in most of europe high beam's are required to be yellow due to the fact it's easier on the eyes at night and produces less glace when there is fog snow or rain.
the wavelength of blue light is very short and reflects off of precipatation to a much greater degree that longer wavelength's of more "yellow" light
also HID's in halogen housings (any color) produce more glare for oncoming traffic and in the aforementioned weather guess what glares back at you more because of the crappy beam patten...

In case you haven't noticed everyone is getting HID's. So if you want to stick with your grandma headlights then go ahead. Doesn't matter to me if you hit a deer with your dim yellow lighting :)
i ACTUALLY put yellow lights into my projectors. not the brightest thing out there but know what they look sick ImO. i have white fogs (doing the opposite) that light shit up if i need it. i live in a city i dont gotta worry about hitting a dear ... just homeless ppl
Haha nice. Yeah i have yellow fog lights that are wired independently so in fog i just turn the hid's off and flip the yellow fogs on. So i'm set.

^ lol so you don't use your HID's in crappy weather, opting to go with the inferior beam pattern and output of yellow foglights rather than what a proper low beam (non blue) halogen bulb making them useless in bad weather...
plus if your rides thread is accurate they aren't even in projectors your just being a a$$, blinding the hell out of people with blue light at night
I don't care if people don't flash lights at you...
don't take this too personally, any half ass'd HID setup annoys the hell out of me

Well that was a fun experience... nothing like having a rear lateral link snap when on the highway. Driverside rear foward noltec link broke at the weld where the bushing meets the knuckle. The entire bushing surround is gone. While waiting for the tow truck I called TiC and ordered a set of whitelines. Charging the battery in the SVX now so I can drive it for the next few days till the links get here and I get them in.

The 06-07 STI's came with undercar panels along with the rear diffuser as part of the new aero package, you may have a good chance at adapting those....

Yeah, we'd be making custom panels like that to mount the under floor air guides on, the guides wouldn't be very effective without smooth airflow around them.

Put the rear strut bar back in, still have to paint it yellow to match the front but for now i don't care. Basically now I'm maintaining the car and not buying anything to mod it, til this summer!
I'd like to see pix of your strut braces, front and rear! Well, you've got a wagon so the rear would probably be different than my sedan application, but I'm still interested none the less.
Can you post measurements, mostly tube diameter for them?
thanks!
I keep on forgetting sorry!!! Maybe tomorrow I'll get to it.
My tailgate got a present today.

It's actually much easier to open and close the tail gate now with that bar, more so than I thought it would.

I want one of those bars...
The underbody aero is cool too, I have been trying to find a later model car parting out that I can snag OEM panels to try and fit. At the very least for snow/slush protection on the oil pan/headers. My car is pretty low for Ohio.

Clean engine bays are awesome and yours diffentatly falls under the category of clean in that pic. But you need to paint the A/C pully cover red to match the other one.

I haven't seen one since... I think when xXGTBspecXx put one on his wagon, back in the day, when he was still here...
So when I saw one on some site I've never seen before (twigapartsdirect.com) I took a chance on it and bought it instantly! Good site too, the bar was at my doorstep within a week.
