Lawyer up, it costs more money but at least on my last 2 tickets, points reduced to nothing. Typically they just want money, think of it as a selective tax on your freedom to speed.
Drove the truck to work, just to make sure I can actually use it for a spell while I maintain/update the wagon.
yup plan on getting a lawyer I can't afford the points on my license and insurance increase

yesturday i washed my car and did that Hog-Zaust thing. and it sound like crap but ill keep it for a bit till i get real exhaust.
I called Mike at Bosal. They do still have that really sweet deal on the SPT BD and BG/BK axlebacks. Should have one ordered tomorrow and I think it will compliment my MS3 single-port header.
When to the junkyard and found an older version intake tube that lacks the extraneous boxes and tubes. picking it up tomorrow for probably 5 bucks tops.
Still working on getting my foglights back in. Mixed screws and bolts didn't work well kept breaking the JB weld. got matching screws and bolts so need to redo the JB weld with the new bolts. Anyone have the best way to remove JB weld remnants so that the surface will be flat again?
Found out that the junkyard owner has noticed a higher demand for subaru's and has been buying a good deal of them lately so plus 1 for me!
I'd be interested to know from which year you're getting the intake tube from. I'd really like to pick one of those up and see if it's that much louder or better than the box.
^ thought about the $30 intake from ebay?
I have an intake already, and just want to replace that tube. Are we talking about something that would replace just that part?
Turn 3 intake:

^^ for that you should just get some generic tubing + couple of silicone sections and hose clamps. That'll delete the silencer tube and retain your "torque" box.
Alternatively you could delete the entire section with an ebay intake or a 2.2L 95-97 intake tube like the one I have.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2008/08/IMG_0430-1.jpg
I just got done with fixing my passengerside front strut. For some reason I'd assembled the strut without the cone washer, bad move. Took me and a buddy about 20mins to pull the whole thing out and fix the issue. Car rides GREAT now. :D
The problem with replacing just the MAF-to-box section is that IAC fitting. On the Cobb CAI I had, they'd simply gluegunned in a part, which did the job, but by the time I got it I had to completely reseal it. A 95-97 EJ22E tube sounds like a simpler solution.
Do we have any reason to believe that the box is actually there to improve torque? Could it be to simply help to lower the intake noise even more than the previous models in the pursuit of "refinement"?

Isn't it apparently on there for "air on demand" in case you get into a situation where you need more air than the intake can take in? That sounds like BS. I'm sure someone could take it off and either notice no difference in power, or maybe a little more.
Mine will look like what Huffer posted. For a few bucks it shouldn't be hard to take off the current intake section and replace it to see the difference. I will try to get it done tomorrow if I have enough time and write my impressions.

It's been heavily debated without much actual empirical evidence. I didn't notice much difference between the intakes except for loudness. Butt dyno said nothing, but mechanics hands said "woohoo" to less crap in the engine bay and actually being able to get to the tranny from the top.

hoods are cheap and IMO it would look kickass for an irregular shaped hole to be cut in a hood, like 1/2 inch or so around where the SC needs to clear hood, like some guys do with those big turbo setups.
wouldnt be practical for daily driving, but it would look wicked for shows and such.

Nice. That should be a nice full boost. I'm doing 6psi right now on my EJ25D SOHC and it seems to work fine. As far as I know, phase I is the USDM SOHC 2.5L GT engine and phase II is the JDM DOHC 2.5L engine. There isn't much difference as far as engine size/style though. Still completely open decks so the compression needs to stay somewhat high and the boost somewhat low. Unless, of course, you figure out a way to expand the engine a bit (I've heard of super thick gaskets that will do this) or fill in your open deck with some sort of molten steel (Not sure how well that would take though *shrugs*.) Anyhow, there is a company that I'll have to look up again that sells some way awesome cams for the SOHC and DOHC engines that make the engine response phenomenal and make it sound even better. I'll post a reply when I find out what it was.

That is incorrect information, the EJ25 Phase I engine was DOHC and the EJ25 Phase II engine is a SOHC, they weren't for different markets. The phase I motor had like a 9.6:1 Compression ratio and the Phase II had 10.0:1 Compression ratio. Someone correct me if I'm wrong on the CRs.

Well I'm not sure exactly which ones, I know the biggest (thickest) hose reaches fine. the rest are all too short. I think there are 3 of them
So the IAC is fine, but the PVC lines are too short. Good info. If/when I grab one, I'll make sure to grab all of that stuff.

Though I have discovered that my sway bar has flipped and the bar and endlink are pointing completely downwards. Yeah a place like O'Reilly's will have hoses and they're pretty cheap. Just take scissors or a knife and cut them to the length desired or often they will just cut some from their bulk hose for you and charge by length.

I eventually gotta put the timing covers back on, when I got the motor the passenger side cams were cracked and the covers busted from transportation, so never got around to puttin on the covers after i replaced the cams. I need to extend my CAI about 3", I cut the angle at the end off but lost the length so its pushing into the pressure sensor.

Got my foglights in finally. Also, put the old style intake tube in. turns out the thickest tube will fit and the long one close to it will reach to one of the connectors but the other two I had to cut new tubes for. the tubing was 7/8th of an inch I do believe.
reactions: car is definitely much louder but in a good healthy roar type of way. As far as actual performance, not so sure. I like to thing it seems quicker but it could be that whole placebo effect.

When I got my free tube it was missing the hoses too, but I had the connectors from it, and two stock resonator boxes. I had to cut one connector to join two hoses because one wasn't long enough. Glad you got yours to work.
Although these cars ARE like Legos for the most part, SOME backyard engineering is required to fit things a little more perfectly.

This should hold over for this year. Maybe something better next year.

Swapped in an 07 WRX TR shift knob and boot. My red stitch leather shift knob and boot are FS now!
Took out GT fogs. Those are FS too.
Discovered a front oil seal leak, could be coming from the RH cams too. *sigh*
And the passenger side CV is torn now too.
I'm really starting to get annoyed with this car.
I looked and my L doesn't have any visible foglight wiring, which makes me a bit bummed. Not too keen on running my own wiring and switch for that stuff in the event that I were to buy some.
Got an STi trans mount, and hope to have my Bosal axleback this week.

So I'm driving home today from work, and coming out of a industrial park comes along a 2.5RS, when I got closer I noticed that he's got a Rear Diff. Cover, Bigger Mudflaps than OEM, and he's lowered, so im guessin he's done some work to the powertrain as well. So I'm driving along minding my own business when I noticed he's glancing back at me numorous times and getting a little spirited on the throttle, so for the hell of it i join in. He happens to be going the same way onto the highway as I am and starts to get more agressive with his driving, obviously wanting to race.
There was some light traffic on 3-S and I was able to get by him, thats when i noticed it.........."NASOIC" in big silver lettering on his quarter glass. His expression was the same as mine when he saw the SL-i.net on mine.... :smt029
So he follows me onto 128-N, and this is where I shock myself......after getting off the on-ramp, I floor it up the highway, its got a slant to it so my low-end torque does me no good, thankfully we already were doing 65+ on the ramp. To my surprise, I'm pulling away from him! after hitting the crest of the hill, 120+mph later, He pulls back and I quickly lose sight of him.
This little race tickled my fancy, and making me proud of what I've done to my car so far, even though it is N/A and not turbo (N/A is better though :smt016 )
so ya, i know technically its not something i did TO my car but rather something i did WITH it, I still thought I would share this interesting story with ya.
hehe, my 98GT is better than a 2.5RS, say what you want, I know i prolly have a ton of mods in comparison to his on the powertrain, but idc, i still felt good about it, hehe

Found out from the adjuster it's officially totaled thanks to hail damage. :-( I now have to wait for the total loss department to call me and tell me how much it's worth and what kind of settlement I'll get. So far they said I have two options: give it up and get full market value, or keep it and get a portion of what it's worth.
I'm leaning toward #2, they would only give me 3 days to find a new car, and I still love it even though it's not as pretty as it was a week ago.
But at least I'll have some money to throw at it (DLC...), and I'll just drive it until I'm ready for a new car.

washed it. Installed 2 12" audiobahn's with a custom made amp. it's about 800rms and 1200 peak or so. needless to say it will pound the living hell out of my car but i usually have it set pretty low just to get a good thump and the wagon constricts the noise to the inside of the car very well. the sound difference is immense going from inside the car to outside even with the windows down.

Yeah. I tried quite a few things to "trick" mine as well. Nothing ever worked. However, I have had some success with moving to a universal downstream O2 sensor. Might be worth a shot. Crappy thing is, it's an expensive shot. :( Did you originally start out with two cats or just one? Might be best to just go with two high-flow cats (if you aren't already.) Not to mention it's illegal to lower the number of cats on a car from the stock amount (in Colorado anyhow.) Good luck!

WI doesn't even do a visual anymore, if the diagnostic port reads clear you are golden and they no longer even check pre-OBD2 vehicles. At the moment there is no actual cat, just the baby glasspack that is shaped like a highflow that comes in the OBX midpipe. Therein lies the true culprit.
And the experiment continues...

The CEL actually went off for a few months with that deal but it eventually returned. I really want to put a cat back on it if only to shave Db's. Emmission legality means almost nothing to me.

Naughty :smt018
When I had my '98 Crown Vic I had a bad cats and wired in some resistors in the downstream 02's. Worked like a charm.
Planning to do the same if I have issues with my (someday) header and (it's upstairs awaiting header) highflow cat.
WI doesn't usually do a visual but they WILL run the sniffer up your pipe if your car comes in looking like it's been modded. Unless they changed that in the past year. Friend of mine tried to pass his modded 2.5RS and they sniffed him right away. He swapped exhausts from his OTHER 2.5RS and got it to pass, then put the offending exhaust (header/highflow/stromung) back on it.
He naughty too :smt021

if you dont know what your looking at, this is the part of the wheel hub that the bearing gets pressed on. The top portion should be smooth and the same diameter as the bottom, but something either broke or spun free and created this burr on the cylinder, which caused my wheel to wobble around.

That's weird - you should be able to see the pin even before you start punching it out. Are you sure there is even one in there? Maybe someone left it out when doing an axle swap previously? Or 3mm might be too small - the pin is hollow, I wonder if you're just punching it through the pin...

I know, tell me about it! Outside, in the dark... but I literally put a 3mm punch in the hole and there's no wiggle room in there at all. I spun the axle as well (noob alert, make sure the wheels are off the ground before attempting this) and there's nothing protruding from the other side?!
I wondered if I'd punched the pin all the way out, but there's nothing on the ground and the axle still won't come off.
BTW, passenger side is a motherless dog to get access to because of the stupid 1st cat. I should just take the headers off while I'm under.
Put the car up on craigslist, already had 2 people look at it, one of which completely low balled me and tried to convince me that Subarus are expensive to maintain, have hard to find parts, and very expensive parts, which made the car really only worth $400. Dumbass...
Subarus are not expensive to maintain, but the non-maintenance parts ARE expensive if you break them!
I just swapped in a Grp. N or STi transmission mount. I'd forgotten how much more material the hardened mount has versus stock.
Only took three jack stands, two jacks (one for the transmission), a ratchet, two extensions, and a 14mm deep socket. I didn't even have to remove anything except for the nuts and bolts, as I got the mount to slide out pretty easy. ~30-40 minutes and I was done.

Suspension's knocking more..... ugh..... found a Fozzy that needs a trans on CL, maybe I'll swap my shit into IT instead of the wagon.
My drivers side tophat is a bit creaky/rattly, maybe that's what you are hearing? Thinking some Group N bits are in order. Yes, I cheaped out and re-used the originals when I did the suspension. :smt011
I've been too lazy/busy to put it in the air at work.... probably just my rigged GT sway bar. Re-used the L's bushings and brackets since the GT mounts differently. Or it's the shitty stock L struts.
Need to put my WRX struts in, but can't decide if I want to throw in lowering springs, or get some saggy butt spacers.

Axle install today.
Half an axle install today. How short is the damn pin that goes in the tranny stub? I have a 3mm dia. punch going at least 20mm into the axle, and nothing coming out the other side.

Ok, figured it out, finally.
Took a leaf out of an old skool Subbie writeup, went in from the top for the pin removal. removed air intake, moved some harness wires, used a 6" 3/8" extension on top of my 5mm punch and went to town. Pin dropped out, pulled axle. Checked it against new one. greased up new axle, slid it onto the splines and proceeded to attempt to reinsert pin. No dice. Finally grabbed a long 4mm dia wire (coathanger works) and made sure the holes were lined up. Used a small vice to compress pin just slightly. Insert pin, tap it in. Fight with hub end to get it back in the hub, install strut bolts, install 32mm nut that cost me $10 for a socket, reinstall wheel and lugnuts, lower to ground, install intake, indent 32mm nut so it doesn't come loose.
Time taken: too long. Stupid pins.

taking a swing at using bondo for the first time. Decided I would pull the radio antenna base out and cover the hole up since i dont use my radio anyways. in the process of doing that as we speak, just letting it cure then sanding and priming later tonight. If it comes out good I'll hit the rust on the fenders next and then eventually the rust lining my windshield/roof. ^_^
Also found out the clunking/knocking noise's location, the hanger that the exhaust shop welded onto the pipe and body broke, so the 2 halves are banging against each other, gonna call them up and make an appointment for this weekend to get that fixed

 100% it will crack in a month or so. If you can not weld a metal patch the next best step is to get fiberglass mat/weave and resin. Make sure you grind the edges of the hole before you mix and apply. Wait until it cures. Sand both inside and out. Apply "mixed fiberglass filler" aka fiberglass bondo, wait until it cures. Sand in and out. Then apply a "THIN!" layer of bondo. Sand then prime. Spray some rust proofing on the inside of the quarter panel when your all done.
The reason why this method will not crack is because of the fiberglass mat/weave which builds strength in the fibers themselves instead of mixed putty that has no real strength.
Remember body work is not "sculpting clay" so don't go to crazy with the putties.
Good luck. -Chuck
P.S. the rusting windshield/roof may be a can of worms. Its always worse then you think when you try to repair it.

Hello everyone. New member here. Just got my 95 legacy L last sunday, finally. Appears to be well maintained, 134K miles on it.
Replaced tailight bulbs, front right headlight, evened up air in tires, changed the spark plugs with bosch platinum 2's (hope that is ok?), oil (10/30W), oil filter, Lucas fuel injector cleaner fluid, air filter. That's about it, not sure what other maintaince to do. I like this car a lot. My first legacy, but drove my x's a bunch, snow or sand, impressed, so I wanted one for me. @95USsubaru
If you use a simple plastic polish (which you can find just about anywhere) you can make the lenses nearly perfect looking after a good wet sanding. Note that this will wear your arm out BIG TIME and I would suggest using a buffer ball or something on a drill to do the polishing. :)

Yeah there's a 1" hole (that I drilled) in the corner section of each light and I drilled out another 1" hole in the city light location. At this point I'm not even going to bother filling the holes. I'm taking my lights out and giving the car to them as-is. Minus the GTB wheels and roof rack.
I installed the simpler intake tube. Sounds a lot more like the Cobb CAI, which is good, and the intake hum is far quieter. Overall I like it. Pics/video later.

I am looking at a set of the BBS style rims tomorrow morning that are off a 2003 legacy. The guy wants 500 for the set, with mounted and balanced Bridgestone Portenza tires (P205/55/R16 H89). Not a lot of tread depth left on tires, but rims look nice, no curb rash. I assume (asking) they will fit my 95 legacy L wagon? Costco sells chrome lug nuts for 50 cents a piece.

Happened last night, but I was sleepy.
We swapped the big guy!!! We pulled the 2.2 saturday night and for the first time pulling a Subaru engine, we were very pleasently surprised; not that hard. After some jerry rigging with vaccum hose because of the flip side JDM intake, we started it...AND IT RAN!!! After the oil pressure got to normal, it ran and drove. We took it across town (without the hood!) to the only 24hr auto parts place to run a code and sweet mother is it smooth. It's also quiet, so much more quiet than the beat up 2.2. I still have some things to work out but I am now mad tyte JDM yo!

Started to hear a slight exhaust/valve flutter. Tightened down the intake bolts and fixed the gaskets, the flutter wasn't as bad, but still there. Worked on the vaccum lines, still there. Tightened down the old exhaust manifold bolts. Still there. So I decided to buy headers! Ordered some UEL headers from Speedyracer.

That can be a little tricky. I never dented my holes in but I did weld them and grind them. After that, a very thin layer of bondo and bam! All finished. Didn't turn out too bad. Although, it could have used a bit more sanding. Nothing noticeable though. Also, depending on what you're using for a sanding, the really large electric sanders work pretty well for flattening stuff like that out as it won't do deeper where it can't reach. Good luck though! I'm sure yours will turn out fine.

I would suggest buying 6 new studs from subaru, and also picking up a 10x1.25 heli-coil kit so you can drill out and tap the holes of the studs that break. This is just what I had to do on my 97, but the manifold had never been off before I think... It sucks drilling out 4 studs while lying on your back under the car. Good luck and I hope you have more luck than I did with it.

Moved the BE indoors. It either waits there till this buyer makes a deal, or goes up on jackstands for a strip down. Either way it's better off sitting inside.

ya, a buddy of mine is, and other than the trim its all done, here's a shot of it while it was being sprayed with the base coat, and not thats not WR blue, its a much deeper, metallic blue, the clear coat made it that way, i'll be taking it to a photo op possibly after the trim is done, just b4 the meet in sept.

rims are getting finished 2morrow along with a 2nd clear coat possibly, had water in the line that leaked out a bit onto the paint, so we need to sand that down and repaint that, along with a couple of spots that ran. Better pics when its finished

Those are real nice. Similar style of whatever they are called on some subaru legacy gt, or legacy bbs style, I think that style looks so good on legacys. What size tires you gonna run? Hey, fellow washingtonian, wasssup.

note: that Back to Black trim refurnishing stuff is total crap.
tried 3 coats on side trim. had some rubbing compound residue on there, and trim was faded bad, sort of rough from drying out. the back to black looked ok for a minute, then would dry very light, and made the rubbing coumpound flake into million pieces and go into trim, showing way worse.
detail trick # 58 : pulled out the old tried and true Dextron III , rubbed that into trim, looks better than new, NO compound residue, stays shiny black, but not wet, works great, a tiny fraction of price. works good on tires, also, don't laugh til you try it :blackeye: . lasts a long time on there, too. :rr:
