Today I finally did the rear brakes on my car. Between that I plasti dipped my LGT 17" 5spokes with 3 coats of "anthrite true metallic" and 2 coats of glossifier. I LOVE the color, but I decided I like the style/fitment of the rotas better so I will be ordering more Dip and dipping them. Here is how she looks, don't mind the filthy car haha

Its about the same as mine. I'm 2.25" cat-back (cats keep the requisite back pressure) through a 12" glasspack (as resonator) and a magnaflow (not sure its specs). Great deep rumble but not loud even at revs. I bet your 20" glasspack and EJ25 make it a scosh deeper than my EJ22.

Haha! Awesome. I remember in high school some friends and I would snow drift around the parking lots at night before they were cleared. There were multiple times that the ABS system would turn on so much it would stop working and the light would turn on. I also tested the make sure it wasn't working. With the snow it was easy to figure it out, lol.

However with mine, I only needed to turn off and restart my car and the ABS would work again.

The ABS light came on once before years ago when I was trying to climb a hill covered in mud and snow with pedestrian all seasons. Like you said Navi, it went away after a restart but this time around, something is actually broken. I guess I should look into it but this car is such a weekend project now that I might just say "screw it" and practice real threshold braking.

Grim, I would've stopped closer but my idiot self would probably have hit the camera and I like my DSLR.

Replaced the crap SilverStars that have been hiding in my BL's headlights. The new units are outstanding. For about 1/3 the price of HIDs, I got 90% of the performance.

Lows are: Osram Rallye 65w H7. (10w over normal)
Highs are: "Modified" Philips 9011, aka the HIR1. (In a 9005 socket)

Original lumens were 1400 low, 1700 high. New ones are 2100 low, and 2350 high. They are a great improvement for the buck. Seeing as that the only improvement would be to retrofit in HIDs, but that would have taken more cash, for not "that" much more performance. Plus not cutting, or drilling. I ordered from CandlePower and they were super fast.

As to modifying the 9011, I just had to trim one of the base "lugs" so it would slide into the socket for the 9005. The HIR technology is amazing! I was super skeptical of all the information I saw online, but I'm sold! They pack 150% the punch at the same wattage.

Here's a great the post on the swap at LegacyGT.com.

Today installed Koni adjustables to the BL. Exactly what I was looking for performance wise. Comfortable in cruise, but firm in cornering. The originals had 192,000 miles on them and were actually still doing ok! Lol side note, I guess KYB actually makes the struts for most Subaru products. Didn't know that till we were cutting the front struts for the incert. Lol big KYB stamping. And... A note not to cut or heat the strut. Oooops. Haha

So when you buy KYB replacements, they're a scosh firmer than factory! :smt023

Pulled the motor out of a 3rd gen today to replace the clutch, motor will be going back in tomorrow and it will be my new(Ish) whip..sadly my 2nd gen sedan will be going to another home. I'm liking this car a pretty good bit, fairly low miles, and a 5 speed wagon. Think it will be ok.

I notices the where the headgaskets stick out from between the head and block look like single layer gaskets..I sure hope this car has never been over heated. Or doesn't have external leakage.

I know this isn't a question asking thread, but does anybody know the history of the ej252? I can't find much on it, and want to know if the hg problems were fixed up to this point..I have never heard of a single cam hg problem.

I have heard of Headgasket issues all the way up to 2008. SOHC heads on the EJ25 started in 1999 (2000 on the Legacy) and HG failures were somewhat prevalent on all pre-2004 EJ251 and EJ253 engines, although not as much of a guarantee as on the EJ25D. My EJ251 is leaking oil out of the driver's side HG right now...

(IMHO) I'm of the camp all non-boosted (i think the boosted ones got TLS gaskets factory? anyone?? or just sti got the good gasket?) ej25s are suspect. I know there were changes around 2000ish (2nd and 3rd gen EJ25s), but my recall is the seep of a failing gasket changes from into the engine to out of the block, as does position of the seeping (i think pass side in older and driver side in newer (aka 2000+). My 03 OBS got a little seep driver side, cyl #1, my 95 is EJ22 so no issues in that rig.

If its single I'd consider it questionable.

http://www.imgur.com is much faster than photobucket, and they promise never to take your rights to your photos away, unlike many photosharing sites. It's pretty easy to upload and post images with the [IMG] tags with either of them.

Here's my writeup for photobucket. Imgur is very similar. (http://www.sl-i.net/FORUM/viewtopic.php?f=41&t=23411)

I roughly patched my downpipe back together. The flex pipe broke off right before the flange and I've been running around for about a week running open downpipe which is WAY loud haha. I must be getting old, I think I am gonna replace the shot flex pipe with a high flow cat.

I fixed the final exhaust rattle. So satisfying.

Also patched an exhaust leak on the midpipe. There's still a minor one inside the catalytic converter heat shielding, so I'm not even going to bother with that one.

Also painted my roof rails black to match all of the plastic cladding that I painted earlier. Looks sharp.

1st gen (98-02) FOR or 2ND gen (03-08) springs stuffed in the OB struts? Did you need to use FOR upper spring perch for the front springs?
The reason I ask is I've been wondering if one can stuff 2nd gen FOR springs in OB struts and gain more lift.
I put rear 1st gen FOR in OB struts and got a little lift but didn't have FOR front springs.

That's my old setup he's got under the postal, it is indeed gen1 Forester springs, with Forester upper perches on 96-99 outback struts. Front springs are the same lower diameter as legacy but taper off towards the top making it necessary to have the correct uppers.

What he said, I also found that with my mounts where the struts meet the body, I need a washer under the nut at the top of the strut, as currently they clunk a little on down travel since there is a gap between the nut and the mount.

I attacked all of the quarter panel/wheel well rust today with POR-15. It went extremely well, I think. Hopefully I staved off the rust for a year or two. I completed the job with truck bed liner along the arches to match the painting I did on all of the plastic panels & bumpers. Car wash & pics this weekend.

Ya I've never seen these rims before. There very similar to LGT snowflakes but a bit different in a cool way :)
Today I bought some sanding supplies, bondo, and other stuff to get started on that rust
It's super clean underneath but has a bunch of stupid surface rust

If you're going to sand it, might as well just paint it with enamel etc.... Dipping (I assume you mean plasti-dip) doesn't require sanding. Just a very clean surface And their adhesion promotor that comes with the kit.

If not, carry on.

I'm only sanding down the rust/ srust bubble and here's the results

So I wanted a beater to practice random things on and today I tried my hand at rust removal
It sucked  it wasn't hard but i still thought it would be easier. I bought some attachments for my drill and once I found the right one to use it got better.
Stupid Subaru putting holes behind 4 different spots on the badges. Very little bondo used so we'll see how it holds up.
Next is the rust beside the front windshield, i'm going to do the roof and pillars black and so I left the top half of the hatch unpainted since it will be black soon enough.

Eh, I've got another door I can use, but it's gonna mean I'll have a wintergreen door on a silver car. And since I'm not painting until I do rust repair, I'll have a mismatched door for quite a while... Or, I'll break down and go flat black with Wal-Mart spray paint... 'cause that worked soooo well the last time I tried it.

I use helmsman spar urethane diluted with mineral spirits, applied liberally with a cloth to the headlight in several coats. Pretty inexpensive, and it seems to last pretty well.

You can weld/epoxy a nut onto the adjustment screws if the plastic heads break off or strip. I still need to do that with my lights, I've been using a vice grip to adjust them. If you're going from 1pc lights to 2pc, you'll need to swap out the headlight bulb connectors on the harness and you will need the little plastic inserts where the corner light screws go. Holes for the plastic inserts are already there.

If you're going from 1pc lights to 2pc, you'll need to swap out the headlight bulb connectors on the harness and you will need the little plastic inserts where the corner light screws go. Holes for the plastic inserts are already there.

I've had them in both my BD GT's and my 2.5i wagon has them now
I did an LED interior bulb upgrade and now it looks like my cars a spaceship every time I open the door at night lol

Finally finished up my tune up that I started on Columbus Day. Dis the plugs, wires, coil pack and cabin air filter(my wagon didn't come with one out of the factory so I had to vacuum out the space where it fits first :smt013 ). Then for today I did the fuel filter and the pcv valve. Well worth the money for everything as my car runs better (the plugs and pcv valve were in desperate need of a change, and the tips of the coil pack were corroded), and with the air filter in I shouldn't be getting any weird smells when I have the heat/ac on.

Tried doing the LED Diode Tape mod to my cluster and essentially, turned my cluster into a toaster oven. The foil I had laid down under the speedo made a connection with the screws to hold it in/supply power, turning the copper wire red hot. i'm lucky i tested it before i got everything tucked back in. Thankfully I have a brighton so I ordered a spare cluster in order to swap over the tachometer and kill two birds with a bunch of leds. So this morning I swapped everything back to my original cluster, redid the leds with much cleaner solders, kept the foil clear of any contact points and went to plug it back in... No speedo, gas gauge is stuck, tacho jumps around and doesn't respond to any throttle. Did I really just fry both cluster just for some leds? I thought it would be fairly simple, just solder in the leds and go. Any Ideas?

Oh yeah, and now my driving lights are stuck on until I unhook the battery (the amber corners in the front and my nighttime rear reds) :smt013 :smt022

Top & bottom. The spring off the BC is flat on the bottom and the overall diameter of the whole spring is slightly bigger. It's difficult getting a spring compressor to compress the springs properly and they're not really very safe on there anyways. Otherwise I'd just get a different upper spring seat, but that won't really solve the issue.

The struts are bad and the bearings in the tophats are shot, too, so I'm going to try talking them into doing it right and replacing the struts & hats, too.

To turn these off, switch off the switch on top of the steering column with the big "P" on it. This inevitably will ALWAYS get hit when removing the cluster.

Gave the BH a good interior cleaning, cleaned and waxed the door jambs, and washed it a few times to assess the checked paint. It is fubar'ed basically, but looks good from 20 feet away. Today I might hit it with the DA buffer anyways to get rid of all of the scratches that probably only annoy me. Pulled the chrome grill off until I decide how to alter that as well.

I'm fairly certain the Outback's center diff and or transmission is out. It started with some gear whine in fifth about a week ago. My shifter is all sorts of messed up but I thought nothing of it as the car simply worked. About three days ago, I had to pick up my Jeep's old OEM axles and suspension with the Subaru - about 800 lbs worth of stuff I'm assuming. The car squatted a little bit but the King Springs are tough.

Then, after unloading all the stuff, third gear started whining REALLY loudly - louder than the engine/exhaust. Fourth gear was a bit loud but not as loud as third. The next day, I went to drive and oh joy, the car was trying to stop moving. I happens really badly when turning like the brakes are being slammed on. Shifting is more difficult and the car barely wants to move. I haven't checked much but there is a LOT of oily residue around the back of the transmission.

Torque bind?

If it were the viscous coupler, chances are you wouldn't notice it except under slippery conditions - at least when it went out on my old Outback, it was simply a FWD car until it was repaired, it drove OK.

This sounds a lot more like something shot around in your transmission. Are you having gear engagement problems?

I am but it's a position issue and not a synchro problem. When the u-joint went, it damaged the shifter and moved it about half an inch to the left (third would look like first).

This is where my betting money is leaning towards. The third gear noise happened right after I unloaded all my heavy ass Jeep parts. The transmission/diffs are the oldest major component on the car and one of the only factory pieces still attached. It's just time I guess. Old age and a lot of hard work.

I'll change the fluid in one last desperate attempt but I'm almost positive it's transmission change time.

Ah, yes, I see it now. Subtle, but good! The first picture makes it look way smaller than a grille, so I was looking for something smaller of that shape and failing

I found an '01 GT wagon in the yard today, and was able to grab a new rear headrest that my wife tore with a dog crate being careless as usual.

I was also surprised to see a mint black cargo cover in the next car (which I never had) that some yoyo threw from one car into the next being ignorant. 16 bucks for the 2 parts made me happy as usual.

The good news is that this new yard I frequent has quite a selection. A few 3rd gen Outbacks, several Imprezas, the BH GT wagon, and a couple Foresters. No performance parts on any of them, and aside from 2 they are all automatics. The GT has the single cupholder console, so I might grab that when I get some spare time.

It's much quieter than the indivia exhaust I did have. It might be too quiet...

Don't think of it as quiet. Think of it as stealth.

Oh, I see my local 5-0s doing snow donuts in their Crown Vics all the time. I'm waiting to see the new Interceptors doing flat spins, though...

Replaced yet another fog bulb in the 98 wagon. I swear I am replacing a fog bulb every month or two.

Replaced yet another fog bulb in the 98 wagon. I swear I am replacing a fog bulb every month or two.weel make sure ur NOT touching the glass part of the bulb bare handed. If u want to feel assured wear some latex gloves when installing bulbs. The oils from ur skin that u leave on the glass becomes a focal point for the heat of the bulbs when lit. Hence a blowout of the bulb.

If that's not ur problem try putting on some dielectric grease on the contacts of the female connector to the male bulb. This will prevent moisture from seeping in there and shorting out ur electrical wires and causing ur bulbs to short out as well.

Or make sure ur fuses or relays are the correct amperage. Too much amps than what it calls for over heats the wires and causes melting and worse.

Or....... Just don't use ur fog lights anymore lol

Done all of the above. Since it did not have factory fogs the harness is home made. I am sure it has something to do with that. It normally blows the passenger side bulb. Its only blown the driver's side once. Of course, that was about a week ago. I am thinking its the wires themselves. We built the harness it wiring to handle 100w bulbs and now I am using standard 55w. Think that could be the issue? I did change the fuse down to the right amps for factory fogs.

Is the bulb exploding, or just burning out?

That's a nice diff protector, easy and good access to drain plugs. Mine only has holes/ports. . . . provides a good opportunity for spillage, yours looks more functionally open.
