Pulled the timing belt yesterday, but didnt lock the belt or cams in place! :smt021 Hoping for no damage. Gotta start taking out plugs and determine the timing marks etc.... This is gonna suck.

What do you want pics of? I would guess it sits about 1" shorter than stock, which is the only noticeable difference. Shifts do require more force though, which is to be expected

Changed the coolant. She needed it.
Also, she has mudflaps now too. Just some OEM plastic flaps, nothing too special, but it does the job!

It always cracks when people use body filler to attach or blend scoops into their hoods. It's not designed for that use.
True.
"Welded" to the Factory Legacy scoop, cut out the middle/Trim the WRX scoop to fit and then weld "If" what ever it's made out of is identical. Remember: This is still all in theory, and is alot of work. Now with that said, Get creative maybe?
I plan on cutting the hole in the hood the right size to just make brackets underneath to bolt it to..should look pretty clean

Gonna use some MAF cleaner on the one my car says is bad. If it fixes it then it does, if not I'll be going to the junkyard for one.

Put the whole front of my motor back together (timing belt, tension pulleys. covers etc..) let it run for a little while. took it for a test drive and wouldn't you know.... The hoses are now firm. I think it was the waterpump. About to go out and check it in a few.

^congrats! I hope that takes care of it! Coolant issues are the worst. I used to have perpetual cold weeps from the radiator hoses on my truck, finally got some good expensive clamps and that solved it. It was the worst thing smelling coolant all the time but hardly losing any and never seeing a leak anywhere.

Nah... I think I spoke too soon again. It started the overflowing of the tank again :-( I'm really thinking of selling it and cutting my losses, as I can't afford to do the headgaskets. :smt012 Sucks, 'cause it's clean and I know I won't get what its worth or near that if it does have a bad headgasket.

Went to get the old temp switch to swap back into my car and found a 1.1 bar radiator cap. Contemplating tossing it on in favor of the 0.9 from the factory. I know this won't solve my problem, but I'm at a point right now of trying just about anything. Soon it will be the for sale forum for 2 weeks, then traded in at some Presidents Day sale. :-(

anyone know of any better/less expensive alternative? This is my worst case scenario, and if it doesn't sell, then I'll have to repair it this summer :-( Yeah, I might have to wait that long, if not longer.

I actually know some people that have used the Felpro AND the cheapy eBay kits and haven't had any problems with their EJ25D's. As long as you torque everything down in order and to factory specs, it should be fine...
Purchased and installed a gold Cobb aluminum oilcap and blue Tuned By Cobb battery tie-down.
Swapped the JDM sidemarkers from the 98 to the 97.
Swapped the tires and wheels back and forth.
Removed the Bosal Brospeed SPT muffler from the 98 to be put on the 97 tomorrow.
Found out that a JDM MOMO wheel has a smaller airbag charge than either a 97 Outback or 98 L.
Found out that 205/70-15 rub on a 98 L with stock suspension.

DONT get anything but Subaru Head Gaskets! Trust me, they last longer!
As for the other stuff, Felpro or what not is fine...
As for what I got done to my car... My BD lives! Whoo Hoo!!!!! Motor is finally installed after doing a set of HG's and seals... It's only been sitting for the last 3 months. Sunday I'll get around to detailing it and trying to find the right wheel spacers for the rear wheels and then she's a driver! :smt026

I drove it!! Had to let it sit for two weeks but I got her fixed up and driving like normal. Gotta love going to junkyards and getting great deals, full set of injrctors, $20. MAF, $25. IACV, $20. Spent $65 to fix my car and then I went through a quarter tank driving the hell outta it. I needed that crazy driving too. Drive a '94 Dodge Caravan for two weeks then hop in you're Legacy and you're gonna go crazy in the Legacy!

I so dont want to do this heater core. I know how much work it is... But I'm a broke ass fool so I kinda have no choice.
I should take pics anyway, since I might forget somethings... haha... I might as well run the wires for my heated mirrors also... LOL

This is the most F'ed up heater core placement I have even seen! Who ever the engineer was that decided to place the heater core in the box then glue the f'ing pipe's to the fire wall insulation needs to beaten endlessly!
I have been at it for 5+ hours and I JUST got the core out... and guess what, the core is fine... Still dont kow why I'm getting coolant smell and drips in my floor pan... Changing it anyway though along with the pipes... I have taken so many pics but I'm not doing everything because I would have pages of the crap you need to take off.. The only thing still on the firewall is the AC core and thats because I dont want to have it charged.
Ok... brake over... back at it, hop to at least have the fire wall back together and the dash re-installed before the end of the day. Oh yeah, Also need to route the wires for the heated mirrors... sigh... I'm getting a appraisal done on my car soon. There is no way in hell I would sell and or settle on this car for anything less then $10K at this point!
eekay
02-05-2012, 06:51 PM
Haha. I hear ya'! I wouldn't take anything less than $18K for mine. ;)

02-05-2012, 11:20 PM
Well after about 9 hours of work, I got the heater core changed... That was a PITA! I have my seats out right now. I found mold under the seat so I figured I would let it air out.
Next of the list is pulling the headliner to find my roof/trunk leak so I can put my sub back in. Need to wire the projector fogs and adjust my bumper. Also gonna install my H&R's and some wheels spacers in the rear and she's gonna be ready to roll with 17's! I cant wait to driver this thing!

Today I swapped the stock L suspension back into my L in preparation for giving it to my 18yr old little sister. She has been asking me every time I see her if I'm going to make it "loud" like my GT she has been driving for 6months
So....I decided today to build a UEL header from some spare stock manifolds, something I've been thinking of for a while. I probably could have done it all with stock piping, but it was way easier to use some real thin wall tube I had and just bend the front part up.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/02/189ca32a-1.jpg
It sounds pretty low and rumbley, but I cut the stock muffler off and replaced it with a 16"x4.5" straight-thru SAAB resonator I had and it's too quiet for my liking, but I guess I'll let my little sis decide if she likes it or not.
I'm such a nice big brother haha :)

That sucks! I know that sinking feeling when you lose a motor... (waaaaay too many times)... My worst one was my 350HP 350 in my 67 Chevy... 3k miles on a re-build someone else did and it dropped 2 rods in the driveway...

I'm in the market for a reseal on my 95 leggo.
I've got a Baaad coolant leak (possibly just the thermostat &/or bad clamp down below, maybe something more serious) and some oil leaks here and there.
So unless i hear about some awesome gold standard for reseal kits, I'm thinking about going with a CarQuest [full gasket] kit.
I assume I should swap the water [pump with the timing belt too, no?
(169K and timing with H2O pump was last done at 72K)

215/50/17's... WAY too big. Just moving it in my driveway they pulled the lips of my front fenders out! :-( I'm getting 205/45/17's as soon as I can afford them. I had to use spacers in the rear to clear the struts, and these tires are junk anyway, I got them for temp use only.

I blew one of my 3-4k mile Goodyear GT's on a small canyon that some ass wipes of a construction company failed to fill after they dug a trench across the road, and obviously didn't realize how much class5 settles the first time it gets a good soaking. Their trench is literally 5-6 inches below the blacktop edge, I'm surprised I only blew one tire and didn't take out the oil pan or anything else. If anyone has never seen a 215/45/17 split all the way up the side wall I'll have to get a pic tomorrow in the daylight. I have road hazard protection on the tires, so i should be covered there, but if one of my 05' LGT 17's is bent I'm gonna go on a good old fashion shooting spree.

Its kind of loud and I can feel it in the floor board. I am hoping its a lose sway bar mount or something easy. I just need time to put it on the ramps. How would I check to see if it is the axle? For now I am driving the family beater BH. I have done the tie rods recently and the driver's side cv boot was leaking and that was fixed about a year ago. There is also some vibration in the steering wheel at highway speeds. Think it could be related and be a wheel bearing?

tore my motor apart to chase an oil leak and as expected cam and crank seals are in need of changing, and the idler pulleys have play in them so while im down there im doing a water pump. the timing belt was done 20k or so ago, and there was no signs of leaks so figured the seals were good. im debating weather or not to change the belt again, it looks like its in good shape. but as always everytime i take apart this car i open a can of worms and end up dropping money for unforeseen parts that need replacement. all and all good day i guess

Here is the sound my car is making. Skip to 17 secs and you will here it twice in 2 seconds. It happens mainly when turning and occasionally over bumps. Any ideas what it could be? There is no play in the tie rods or ball joints. I'm thinking possibly a strut or the bearing in the top hat or a worn out bushing somewhere.

More throttle and it would be completely drowned out. It was taken spur of the moment on my phone. After talking with a friend and eliminating what has been replaced already we agree with your earlier thought. We think its the cv joints. One had a bad boot and that was replaced and the joint re-greased. At 147k I think its a good chance they are going bad.

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/03/030212153216_01-1.jpg
The one on the right is still attached, the other is being held in my hand. I cannot seem to get the one on the right off (usually it is a bolt that twists free, right?) but it appears to be one solid piece that will not loosen from the inner end. Does this mean I have to install a new inner tie rod as well this coming week (whenever I get a day off)?

Ya those can be pretty hard to get free sometimes, If you have access to a torch that is my suggestion, otherwise it is all about leverage. There should be a flat somewhere on the inner tie rod end. Put a snug fitting wrench or vise grips on there and wedge it somewhere. Then get a wrench on the lock nut and loosen that first and then the same for the tie rod end. Also invest in a can of PB blaster and everything good.
With practice you learn techniques that make it easier to apply maximum pressure to bust nuts loose but you should be able to get it.

I attempted to heat the outter tie rod end (mostly by the nut area) with a propane torch and then tried to loosen it more, but alas it appears the nut is part of the lower tie rod, as opposed to all of the tutorials which appear to have a nut which separates from the outer tie rod. How far into the boot would I have to go to get to the flat area of the inner tie rod if I kept that stationary for the purpose of removing the lower? Not really sure what to do here, but maybe removing the whole (inner and outer) tie rod would be what to do? Will I still need the tuning fork thing at this point or can I safely return that for my deposit at this point?

You HAVE to loosen the jam nut first. Place the tie rod back up into the knuckle and thread the castle nut on just to keep it in place, then heat up the jam nut and loosen the nut away from the outer tie rod end. Once the nut has been loosened (just needs to be one thread at most, make SURE you are turning it the correct way!!!) then you should be able to turn the outer rod end off by hand. Count the number of turns it takes to get it off and turn the new one back on that many turns. This will get you close enough in alignment to at least drive it to the alignment shop. Once you get the new outer rod back in place be sure to tighten the jam nut back up to the outer rod end.

Count the number of turns it takes to get it off and turn the new one back on that many turns. This will get you close enough in alignment to at least drive it to the alignment shop. Once you get the new outer rod back in place be sure to tighten the jam nut back up to the outer rod end.
Here is the problem... the nut won't separate from the outer rod for some reason. I attempted to reattach the crown nut and still nothing came of it. Here is a photo of the tie rod so you can see roughly what I'm working with.

Removed my mudflaps. Did some other cleaning, removed my filler neck cover, was cleaning that a bit and gas leak.
All of you second gen owners, and probably first and third, check your filler pipe. Subarus guard on it does more damage to it by letting dirt and water sit on it and rust it.

Got a new starter on the car today, sounds different, but better than the last one. Was going to try to put on a Stromung midpipe but the bolts that connect the midpipe to the muffler were not coming off. It would be much easier if I had a lift and some air tools I think!

Not related to my car but I couldn't find a spotted thread. But I saw an army green second gen. sedan yesterday, in Port Angeles. Looked to be a gt but it was badgeless so I couldn't tell, had the right hood and wing on the trunk so I'm guessing it was a gt. It looked amazing! Would have loved to have talked to the owner but I was sitting inside as it drove past.

Sadly the previous owner did not take very good care of her. I have had her for 3 yrs now, but have not had a real chance to do anything with it mostly because of time issues for a couple of the years and money issues the other year. Now I keep my eyes open for 'great deals' on parts, and have wanted to go to Parts Galore (our 'dollar store' for cars) to glean some Sub Lego for many moons, but need the time and cash (and preferably a companion to go with) to do so.
As for location, I hail from Metro Detroit.

Found out that not only was the tie rod busted, and the sway bar link missing altogether, and the ball joint not being the best anymore... turns out my bearings were bad too... so $350 to get my car fixed and then I can start saving up for a new door or something. Mechanic told me the bearings are probably what caused the other things to get bad, and that I have a cracked boot on the other axle so to be prepared if I hear any clicking noises to bring it back again stat...

I like the brightness of this, and I believe it goes into the underhood area on top of the wheel things. My question is, what does the connecting bar do in this case? Is that for extreme driving support? I would like one with that tone, but in the color of blue. :)

The front doesn't do much... however the rear is good investment (not the best for wagon owners since its a fixed bar unless you spend for the hinged unit)

I got ECUtracker (http://www.mympgtracker.com/ecutracker/index/) working today. If you don't know what it is, it is just software that you can put on a phone or computer to hook up to the OBD port to view perameters such as LTFT, STFT, ECT. A/F ratio, and others. Its free and Subaru specific, all you need is a vag-com cable for USB support or OBDkey for bluetooth. I'm using it to monitor my engine so I can tune it with the supercharger.
Anyways I got that working and found I had -10 to -13 LTFT at idle, then +/- 5 almost everywhere else, so I spend a while trying to figure out what was wrong and I'm thinking that it is the air-assist solenoid. Can anyone give me any information on it, I could't find a whole lot?

I went over and took the roof rack off the car so I can put it on the truck...it's kayak fishing season again so I need that. I also found the hole in the block. It's about 4x2" and is dead center of the block, just forward of the throttle body. I've located a motor somewhat local, but it's going to be at least a month until i can afford to pick it up, AND I need an engine hoist. Can't seem to find anyone local that will let me borrow one.
I sat in the car for a good 30 minutes listening to the rain hit the windshield and thinking. I guess while the car is down, I could take advantage of it and fix the bubbling pain over the driver's rear wheel...maybe lay some paint, shave the trunk, and work on the interior. As much as an EG33 sounds like the best thing ever, I think I'm better off just doing some Delta cams and bolt-ons. I need the car reliable, as I'll be driving it to and from Ocracoke, NC once a month for a while (working part-time on the island).

Okay, so I payed $200 towards my repair bill (still owe the other $366.16) and drove to work from the shop. I stopped at our gas station to get an energy drink and some mixed nuts to snack on before work, and when I got back to my car it wouldn't start! After work I tried some more and had the gf come by to help me jump the car. Before the jump there was no noise whatsoever, and the lights were really dim. After the jumping attempt (about half an hour of having them connected) I now can get a steady clicking noise... but no attempt at turning over or anything like that, though the lights are usable again now). I pulled the battery out and decided I will take it Advance Auto in the morning to see if it is still good or not. The sticker on it says 02/09 so that means I have had it in there less than 3 years so far... do batteries normally go bad in that short of time? Maybe it has to do with my 80Amp alternator that they sold me when I replaced the battery the last time? I know on my 92 Spirit as well as the 93 T&C I had a 120Amp alternator.

It's pretty easy, just a pain. I replaced mine just the other week because it was starting to click all the time. 2 bolts, 3 wires and it's off. You'll probably have to go under the car to get one bolt tho, or if you have small hands you can feel for it. I don't know of any threads tho, all I knew was the starter is right by the firewall on the drivers side of the engine and one bolt is really hard to get to!

Okay so turns out the battery was about 100 CCA short, and after AdvanceAuto charged it and I put it in my car, it started right up. Now I found out that my headlight is out RAWR! lol... I bought a new bulb and put it in, but it has something to do with the wiring I guess, so I got a new plug and some crimp things and some electrical tape and plan to work on that at work before I start (which means leaving soon so I don't have to drive to work in the dark). Weird thing is that it doesn't turn on on regular beams and on high beams it lights both filaments, but only at about 25% of the strength.

I have a problem with the LOYALE I just bought. It was fine until I changed the fuel filter!!!
I got a new filter at shucks-the flow is pointing in the right direction so it's not that.
I blew fuel out the other end with air so there's no fault in the filter.
I even put the old one back on and nothing changed.
So, I took the fuel line and hung it over a clear cup. I cranked the starter for 3 seconds and NO FUEL CAME OUT!?
The fuel pump has been great until the moment I switched fuel filters.
Can someone solve this mistery!?

I have a problem with the LOYALE I just bought. It was fine until I changed the fuel filter!!!
I got a new filter at shucks-the flow is pointing in the right direction so it's not that.
I blew fuel out the other end with air so there's no fault in the filter.
I even put the old one back on and nothing changed.
So, I took the fuel line and hung it over a clear cup. I cranked the starter for 3 seconds and NO FUEL CAME OUT!?
The fuel pump has been great until the moment I switched fuel filters.
Can someone solve this mistery!?
PLEASE :)
Is it EFI or carbed?

Phone didn't have enough battery to take another pic when I hit 234,567 so you get to see this one instead. :)

Also filled up gas tank ($40something for 10.xxx gals) and watched as some of it leaked out after it sat at work for a few hours.
Also noticed 4 more fuses were burnt out (5 if you count that headlight one from yesterday)... and those were these 3 ones (one of which I needed for my phone charger...)

Also, what versions of the EJ22 were there again? I peeked under my hood for a bit today and put some loose hoses back in their places and I think it was the E or G version... what versions are there and what are the differences? I also looked at the plate under my hood with the VIN on it, and wondered what each of the numbers/letters means. I didn't take a pic of that but does anyone know of a general guide for that information and what each means for Subarus?
PS-- I am contemplating nicknaming my car 'Scooby'...

I took in half a truck load of stuff last time with my little Toyota...
dirty wire (with wire insulation, plugs, fuse boxes)- .70 a lb... $25.90
brass (little ay tanks in radiators)- 1.50 a lb... $3
Copper radiators- 1.30 a lb... 37.70 (for 2 radiators, one a subaru)
clean aluminum- .65 a lb... 16.90
cans... lol... -.40 a lb... 1.20
dirty aluminum (has bits of steel or rubber on it)... .35 a lb... 47.92
Stainless steel... .30 a lb... .30 (it was just a little tiny peace of trim)
Catalytic converters... pay per type on cat... $5
Came out to about $135... Took me a day to sort/clean. It's worth it man! I used the money to fill the tank in my GMC and buy a couple dvds... This was 2 weeks ago.. With this and also steel, I have made about $2000 this year and I do this on the side... ;-)
Thank you! I was wondering how much I could save up via empty soup cans and Arizona tea cans to use towards my rebuild and/or gas for my dear Scooby :)

I had a 92 Loyal that had a similar problem. My problem turned out to be a bad ground for the pump. Also check the amount of power going to the sending unit. Good Luck.

[quote="r3v_v3ng3":224z1xrc]contrary to what people are saying about a 2.5 piping, it actually has a nice deep rumble. He loves it!
I don't think I've ever had anyone say the bigger piping has bad sound, it's more about having too wide of piping that creates backpressure and hurts exhaust flow on a low power N/A engine.
That being said, it's nice to have good rumble :)[/quote:224z1xrc]
What are the pros/cons to having an exhaust that is wide open after passing through the cat? What does backpressure do to a 2.2L NA?

the 2.25" or 2.5" is best for performance. me and antino got dyno'd on the same day with same mods on same duno. he had a 3" exhaust and I had a 2.25". here are the results...

well considering he is advocating a 2.25" exhaust I would guess that the one that made the more power is his. I find it hard to believe that just an exhaust made 15hp difference.
and the Phase II started in the 2000 model year.

Not entirely true. 99 was a weird year - later manufacturing dates had engines more similar to the BE/BH configurations.

I take it you are the top line of each set and he is the bottom line? Also... if I am running a 2.2L NA would this still mean the same thing as for the 2.5 Turbos you fellas have?
PS -- Thank you for the graph!

The Phase II started in '98, actually. SOHC's were introduced after the DOHC's for the EJ25D. Not sure why they would do that, but I'm currently on the lookout for a Phase I longblock. So, if anyone see's one, lemme know!

No, Sir! A turbo down-pipe will not be as effected being completely wide open as a (lower power) N/A. This is because the exhaust leaving the turbo isn't of any consequence when it comes to back pressure. The up-pipe, on the other hand, is a bit different. Either way, the more free the flow, the better. :)

Okay, so for the 2.2L NA...
1) The wider pipe after the cat is beneficial for the MPG?
2) The wider pipe after the cat is beneficial for the HP?
Scooby sort of rusted in the exhaust area and so I need to replace a part there when I can and would rather buy once and install than buy multiple times to install this one and that :) (hence why being in a forum rocks my socks lol)

Back on topic, I swapped my summer wheels back on today. Weather forecast for the next 2 weeks is 50F plus, my summers will work better than my winters at anything over 40F.

Installed oem tweeters from vermont22gt and i must say its the easiest thing i've done on my bd. works great!
Also did the grounding mod.
Before: 13.99v at idle with lights/stereo on
After: 14.15v at idle with lights/stereo on
I recommed this mod and its under $10
What is this 'grounding mod' you speak of? I run a system in my ride so those little fractions of a volt def help things hit harder! :)

fwa2500, I am in love with these GT-B (stock JDM) wheels!! I've been looking for a really nice set for a month, can you reveal your source? I saw a set on ebay last month, but the cost/condition ratio was not very good IMO.
