I finally got a pair of jdm projector headlights...
Too bad they sent me 2 drivers side ones
That sucks. When I got my jdm fogs the guy shipped it with no packaging . He literally grabbed the fogs and just slapped them in the box. No bubble wrap no nothing :smt005 . One survived, so he shipped me another one.

Woke up to, "Hey, the hoses in the car aren't building pressure." Yay Fricken Me.
I haven't driven my car in a week (lost use of my legs for a little... almost over), and the missus drives it to work 80 miles round trip and parked our XB. Thinking it's the pump, thermo or both. Suggestions?
Huffer
12-21-2011, 10:13 AM
Could be an air bubble? Does the temp gauge shoot up or is there just no pressure at all?
Easy to test the t-stat, harder to test the water pump. I'd go with the cheapest part first.
Okin DaVanh
12-21-2011, 10:19 AM
That's what I was thinking (Thermo 1st). The temp gauge stays on a 1/4, but last night, she was watching a movie inside and said that she noticed the needle was going to 1/2, so she shut it off immediately. Had a co-worker come to check it out for her and that's what he found.
Huffer
12-21-2011, 10:43 AM
Sounds like a t-stat or bubble... my gauge stays at 1/2 for normal operating temp.

Yes slightly below 1/2, try burping the system first, then try the t state. Normal operating temperature isn't at the 1/4 mark.

When reading your thread its kind of amusing how similar our stories are!!
from a civic to testing a legacy, then saying it's going to stay stock, to going off with mods, but reasonable ones (like not going bat-$hi+ crazy with full sti driveline swaps or similar forced induction ideas, but sticking with smaller suspension and intake-y things with handling addition mods, etc.)
check out my March 2010 "Oh Wow" award article too ;) (I admit I don't remember how much back story is in there, like that I actually uttered the phrase, "this will be my responsible adult car, it'll stay stock , no mods." :smt005

It is kinda crazy when you look at it. The stories are rather similar. We both ended up with 95s (that have issues with the Momo steering wheel). We both have stayed close to our original goal of not being crazy with it. And when I look at your car, I like it even though it is crazy different from mine.

yes get them reinforced with welds, I went through 3 sets b4 I had the OEM brackets welded at the bends and then welded the brackets to the frame. not a single problem since. as for endlinks get rallitek solid endlinks, but if you dont reinforce the brackets they will break due to the force of solid endlinks, gradually work down the line till you have a strong setup as things will break as u strengthen other stuff.

You actually need softer suspension in the snow - people who upgrade their RSBs and the endlinks usually end up snapping the swaybar mounts. This is why I stick with the OEM links, it allows some flexion without compromising the rigidity too much. Remember, kinetic energy has to go somewhere, and it will find the weakest spot. I prefer to replace a pair of $30 links, than a $100 swaybar mount or a $200 swaybar.

Haha. I couldn't beat the price. One owner 04 Buick Park Ave fully loaded with 45k miles for 7,500. Needed a battery and a set of tires from sitting. HUD and all. My brother and law had one and it only needed general maintenance besides the intake. They fixed it by 04 though and it doesn't have that issue anymore i have heard. i average 23 on country roads with hills and stop signs and trafic lights and 30-32 on the highway at 75
in my legacy i would average 17 normal but if i was really annoyingly careful (not going over 40) i could manage 30 on the country roads. doing 75 on the interstate i managed 23 to 25
its mainly to do with gearing. If my legacy was geared the way the Buick is it would be easier on the gas.

Replaced my power steering pump with a salvaged one. Pretty easy. Took about 2 hours total. The salvaged unit shipped with plastic plugs so when I took the lines off the bad pump I stuffed them in ziplock bags. Put some towels around and quickly plugged the existing pump. Very little mess made.
Thinking about switching back from the CAI to SRI because I'm having engine temperatures spiking while idling for extended times. Never happened when in the SRI configuration. Started happening when I switched to the CAI with the water proof nylon bag over the filter.
It's all good.

Nylon bag is most likely the problem. Just take that off and clean the filter while you're at it.

cool! do you have pics of your knob and was it a straight swap?
What size is the hole in it, wondering if most are the standard 12mm Suby shifter thread but some are bigger, like 18 or 20mm?
I have an STi knob (piston-like design), but it's like 20mm and my shifter is 12mm, so i wonder if there's a collar that threads in to the knob to adapt to the shifter. . .
Are STis different or short throw shifters different??

Actually, you can get adapters at any local hardware store that will thread into your 22mm and have threads inside that match the mm and pitch of the shifter thread. Lemme see if I can dig something up so you have details on what to ask for...
EDIT: Ah. It's called a "reducer." So, you need a 22mm 1.5 pitch (just guessing the pitch, but it's common in Subaru's) to 12mm/1.5 pitch reducer. Something like this:
http://www.russellperformance.com/mc/adapt_fit/img/661570_lg.jpg
Call around to your local hardware stores and ask if they have 22mm to 12mm threaded reducers. Someone will have it. I promise. Especially a racing shop.

Mmmm, I get the concept you're describing, but I guarantee there is NOTHING like that here, and probably not w/i a 2-4 hour radius. I'm in Moab :smt012
The hardware stores here don't even have 1.5 pitch on anything less than M10.
and the car parts stores don't have any metric roll pins or hub nuts.

Got it all accomplished but the stupid idiot at the muffler shop didn't listen to what I wanted so he cut the flanges off between the midpipe and axle back and welded a pipe in there to extend the midpipe. :smt021 And he also welded the midpipe on to the cat section :smt021 So I guess its permanent now. well its been a bad few days for the subie. First of all last night on the way home this happened:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/01/caroverheating001-1.jpg
Overheating :-( However this morning I put the coolant pressure tester on the car and found that I had a leak at the thermostat gasket. I put a new one in this afternoon so hopefully that is fixed.
Then in auto class we were doing compression tests this morning. I had weird results, I am just going to throw this out there and see what you guys think. On the left bank, cylinders 2 & 4 compression is perfect right in spec one is 180 and one is 175. However the other side they are both 205 PSI, well above spec, which in itself does not concern me but the difference between both banks is the weird part. Also keep in mind that I have delta cams. I just want others opinions to see if my thinking is correct.
Thanks.

01-17-2012, 10:09 PM
What Delta Cam (weld and) grind did you get? This could definitely be caused by the intake and exhaust valves being higher or lower on one side our not opening and closing correctly. How did you do the compression test? Running or not running? How long did you let the test go?
02_Legacy
01-17-2012, 11:32 PM
I have the torque grind, 2000 I think. The compression test was done correctly, throttle wide open, battery charger on. Vehicle, and spark and fuel disabled. I cranked untill the needle stopped climbing, five or six cycles.

01-18-2012, 02:16 AM
Hrm. My Delta Cam torque grind was a weld and grind (264). Not sure if it's different for the Gen3. Perhaps it's a DOHC vs SOHC difference? How does the car run? Are the cams aligned properly? When was the last time you had your timing done and who did it?

even just one tooth? And I would have to imagine it makes a difference if the timing is advanced or retarded. The delta cams may make it easier to run with improper timing too. We will see, I just found out that my instructor canceled Fridays class so I should be able to check it then.

Could still be it. Having different cams might make it more forgivable with timing. Even if you need to do HG's on that motor, they are really easy on that motor, I'm assuming this is a SOHC Phase II....

Today I checked to see if my cam timing was right and as I suspected I was one tooth off on the Right side head. The problem was that when I was making my marks on the belt I was counting the teeth. Really you are supposed to count the valleys between the teeth. I know this becasue I almost did it again today.
The weirdest part of it all is that I notice very little difference before vs after. :smt102

coilovers are NO good for the street, their are too many undulations, cracks, potholes, cambered and offcamber corners on city streets, I have heard several drivers especially keiichi tsuchiya (the drift king) strut and spring setups are much better for "spirited" street driving, you will have a bigger contact patch with the road more of the time which means more control. also lowering springs (not too low) and good shocks are much cheaper.

Open diffs, about a foot of snow with two inches of ice over it and about half an inch of standing water on top of the ice, and a narrow driveway with a drop off that gets steeper and steeper. I probably could have made it if I had either front and rear lsds, left the studded tires on, or if I had been able to get a run at it. But I got open diffs and basic all seasons so right front wheel gets off the ground and I get stuck. I consider smoking tires and not moving at all stuck.

Don't get me wrong, I like driving it but its fwd... I wish it was awd. And that 3.0 isn't very good on gas, especially when you have a heavy right foot. I do like the power of the three liter though but still would rather be driving my car cause I can see the road after dark.

I drove a 96 plymouth voyager in high school for a year or two. My mom's minivan. I hit the speed governor many times in that thing. 112 I believe it was. Drove straight crazyness in that van with my friends and I put an alpine head unit and subwoofer in the hatch. Sounded pretty good. Raced my friend's mazda MPV with the 3.3 (I think or 3.5 or something) and it had a 5 speed auto I think. He beat me. :( Then the cops showed up and they lectured everyone who was there on street racing and then clowned on our cars (there were also riced out hondas on the scene) and asked why we don't race real cars like the muscle cars they drove back in their day when they were illegally street racing, lol.

Well it has been a productive evening..
Loaded my BD on the trailer to take in for frame work tomorrow....
And the Wagon got tons done!
-pulled broken sunroof glass out and cleaned all the broken glass... (hoping to get a new one tomorrow)
-cleaned sunroof drains (the rears were plugged)
-adjusted sunroof assembly
-adjusted driver and right front door glass (they had walked up and were catching on the trim)
-replaced rear center garnish (was cracked and leaking)
-replaced license plate bulb
-replaced cluster bulb and cleaned dust behind face
-tightened nuts for right side tail light
-replaced blown fuse for mirrors and cig lighter...
All the stupid things I could have done in a few hours to make the car that much nice to drive and I do it just before I plan to sell it! ugh... LOL :smt017 :smt005

Added DIY LATCH anchors to the back seat. These will complete the system, perfectly complementing the deck LATCH previously installed.
I pulled the bolts, then had to grind out the anchor's 10 mm hole to accept the car's 12 mm bolt
I used Fixe climbing anchors with rap rings (load bearing to 18 Kn or 4046.51 pound force, or 18,000 joules/meter)
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/01/032040_300x373gif-1.jpg
under rear seat.
I attached them to the seat belt anchors
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/01/P1030807JPG-1.jpg
The outer seat belt anchors have a captive nut on a plate (visible in the rear wheel well), so I assume the inner anchors are similar
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/01/P1030821JPG-1.jpg
I chose the outer seatbelt anchor as it's load bearing and structural for shock loads, when compared to the seat mounting point.

Fixe climbing anchor with ring anchor $5.99 (x4), and a little grinder action, and now I can anchor 2 car seats (2 yr old toddler, and NEW baby boy (born 1/23/2012)) in the sedan, WITH the modern LATCH anchoring system rather than the lame seat belt method.

I have a water pump that was pulled at 100K from a WRX when doing a timing belt, nothing wrong with it. Or I can also pull the one off the 2.5 from the 98 legacy I have in my basement that also had no problems. I'm in MASS also, maybe 20 bucks for the WRX one or nothing for the one from the legacy 2.5. Let me know if you're interested, just be sure to get a new SUBARU gasket from the dealer for the pump and the thermostat housing, not parts store ones.
Also, you're sure it's the pump and not the t-stat housing or the hoses down there right? There are a few small hoses that attach and run up over the motor to the heater core and such.

I had one go out on me when driving to Oregon. Took out my timing belt at the same time (melted half of it, but never snapped). A new one is like $60ish if I remember right.

Yeah, $65 was the cheapest I could find when I called around. The dealer was a hair close to $100 and I found a few EBay specials (don't know about the quality tho) for just over $45.

While it saddens me to see you did not get a BD, or another subaru at all, that is one sexy wagon.
I went out between taking the dog to the vet and my eye appointment and played with my new gopro camera. Still learning it...it makes my bad axle sound even more horrible.

@Perdue- I love subaru's but I just wanted to change it up a bit, since I will be swapping the Legacy over a period of time. Figured I'd get another brand car for daily. And there werent many wagons too choose from around my area that were in my price range. It was this, a focus wagon, saturn wagon, or Saab. And I loved this and the saab, but the saab I was looking at has a whole lot of issues. So I went for this one. :)

It always cracks when people use body filler to attach or blend scoops into their hoods. It's not designed for that use.

True.
"Welded" to the Factory Legacy scoop, cut out the middle/Trim the WRX scoop to fit and then weld "If" what ever it's made out of is identical. Remember: This is still all in theory, and is alot of work. Now with that said, Get creative maybe?

Just installed my kartboy short shifter. Quality is top notch and it shortens the throw considerably. I am happy with it. I think I will be searching for the shift knob for the next few times I drive it though lol.
