Got my A1 Cardone manufactured OEM brake calipers in today. Found out why they're the cheapest. The box packing includes... The shim kit. And the loose top half of the bleeder screw that broke off. They don't use cheap parts, they use what ever parts they can find. Between two calipers there are three different slide pins, and three different caliper to bracket bolts.

Gonna get bleeder screws and side shims from Subaru, I have $100 Subaru bucks to blow and need some other stuff anyway. Any other cheap things that would be useful I could throw into my order?

Sorry. Sport is correct. I still need to nab some spacers for the rear though as I have that nasty "saggy butt" syndrome going on. Should look fairly decent once that's all done though.

On the other hand, nice job with the NGK's. I've been thinking of going with NGK plugs and wires for a while. I'll probably pick those up some time next month. Any pictures of the NGK wires? What color are they?

The Magnacor wires are 8.5mm.I believe the ngk are 8 mm. I really like my Magnacor wires ans v-power plugs setup.

Last night I jump started the car and nudged it in the garage to degrease the engine bay... my first time trying that on any car, and it came out ok. I covered the MAF sensor, coilpack, alternator and battery with plastic bags, then sprayed a LOT of diluted solution of Simple Green over the engine bay. Let it sit for a while and then sprayed the engine bay down with a light pressure hose (cold water). Closed the hood, fired up the car and let it idle for 5mins then pegged the tach at 3500rpm in neutral while steam came out the hood.

Dunno if it looks any better, but it sure smells nice!

Soul Shinobi
02-18-2010, 10:27 AM
Simple Green, while popular for that, is actually mildly corrosive to aluminum. The Air Force has banned its use for that reason. I think the worst case scenario for us would be that the valve covers look crappy, it shouldn't be extreme.

Huffer
02-18-2010, 10:46 AM
Can't be anymore mildly corrosive than the rest of the crap that gets thrown in the engine bay...salt, brake fluid etc.

Either way, I'm just doing it to help clean up the bay a bit before the engine gets pulled.

finally installed the 04/05 wrx struts and springs on my 98 legacy. Had to use the leg springs and top hats for the rear though. the wrx top hats were the wrong spacing on the studs. now i have to torch the springs so they will acually lower my ride height instead of raise it :P

Agreed... they are absoloutly a different angle, but when you tighten things up everything comes in line. and the actual studs in relation to one another should be identical for both tops.

Installed one of my remanned brake calipers. Braking force is much reduced, but I need to do a full bleed because the pedal goes too low. I couldn't install the other front caliper because I need to get it exchanged, god dammed bleed screw broke off during shipping.

Swap that bleed screw for one from your old caliper?

Soul Shinobi
02-19-2010, 09:13 PM
It's broken flush with the caliper, they shipped it with the bleeder screw in and no packing material. I tried an extractor on it, but it got tough and I'd be screwed if I broke it in there so I backed off. I figured I'd just better let Auto Parts Warehouse.com handle it, they're paying return shipping.

Got an 98 Outback Limited wagon (5mt, yay!) last weekend. Today a cherry 98 Outback Limited with the sweet dual sunroofs (has blown headgaskets) showed up in the junkyard, with excellent seats, tires, lights, door cards, basically everything that's wrong with mine that made it so cheap. Got everything I needed except for fenders (wrong color) plus snagged the hood for a friend. There were around 4 of us who attacked it like hawks! I'm sure after this weekend it'll be down to the bare frame.

An old Subaru tech told me that all you have to do to get the air out of the cooling system is to overfill the coolant reservoir tank by a couple inches, let the car heat up, then let it cool down and it'll take care of the rest (radiator cap on of course). The service manual procedure is pretty similar, these cars don't need a whole lot of babying.

I wish it would work like that but my res. is ALWAYS overfilled and I still get a slight heat up on my coolant temp guage then I have to rev the engine to about 4k to cool it back down against to normal oper. temp. I even did the radiator cap off burp for about an hour and got a shitload of bubbles out but my engine still heats up past normal after a while of driving.

evolegacy

lol ya, but that's the last resort.......And pause on what I previously posted, my old man isnt convinced its the HGs, thinks the milky residue is from the moisture building up in the system from all the rain and snow we've had up here, and seein how he was a Master Mechanic, I'll take his word and do his little diag tests that he wants me to do. I'm really hoping its what he thinks it is, either just moisture getting in thru the breathers on the valve covers via my SRI, or from an air leak on the water pump.

TireIron
02-24-2010, 11:54 PM
VWs are plagued by milky residue because of horrible PCV systems and lots of moisture. My friends '02 WRX just had a little bit on his dipstick the other day. I would check the breathers and wipe it out and keep an eye on it to see if it comes back or gets any worse.

So tonight I pulled a screw and plugged one of my tires at 1130 just before this and bed. Third day on this jobsite and I've already picked up a screw, great.

Oh and we just have lots and lots of rain here.

Soul Shinobi
02-24-2010, 11:58 PM
It's not uncommon to have the milky moisture built up if you don't travel far, and in the winter time if the engine doesn't get to warm up fully.

Welcome. That a postal model?

For strut braces, the front struts have the same bolt pattern as the first gen Impreza (GC/GF/GM chassis codes, '93 to '01 in the US) and the rear is the same as the second gen Impreza (GD/GG, '02 to '07). I have a font bar which helped a lot, but stiffening the front of the chassis causes a bit more understeer so I'll be getting a rear one some time.

As for the intake, a hybrid intake is recommended, this leaves the air box and pre-airbox resonator (the 'milk jug' in the fender, aka the snorkus) in place, otherwise our MAF based cars will get a nasty resonance at high throttle and low RPM that causes a dangerous rich spike in fuel delivery. More on hybrid intakes here (http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1471819). I've made a very cheap hybrid intake solution for your intake style and will be posting about it soon in the Naturally Aspirated Engine (http://www.sl-i.net/FORUM/viewforum.php?f=11) section.

That's because it didn't have enough anti-seize on it. It's never a bad idea unless it's explicitly stated not to use it. A good automotive tech will take a steel wire brush and anti-seize to every bolt exposed to the elements or heat that's removed. Trust me, it's not excessive, you'll thank yourself later.

The idle air control valve can get sticky, pouring some Sea Foam or carb-cleaner in it can help. The valve is below the throttle on the side of the airbox, there's a thick rubber hose coming from it to the intake track, doesn't hurt to pour the cleaner in there. Using a cleaner like that can foul up the plugs, so if you can keep the engine on to do it before you change the plugs that'd be best (might need to rev it to keep it alive).

i'm thinkin 17's...i'm just not a big fan of the bbs' for some reason and when the tires are turnin i the "silver beads" would look like more of a ring of silver, thought it would be a good look

hallowpoint
03-03-2010, 03:26 AM
^^those arent bead locks, bead locks are for off-road use and hold the tires. those are "bolts" to replicate a multi piece wheel. those are those are either cast on there or glued on maybe.

but buy those wheels, there suppose to be BBS LM reps. i just went to the site and you can buy them with tires for just over 1k not a bad deal if the are descent quality. haha before you buy them can you let us know what offset they are.

edit: so your not a fan of bbs wheels but you want to buy reps? and when there rolling it will just look like silver bolts on a wheel.

Fixed my cruise WITH MAGIC! Apparantly, when you do a At to MT swap, all you gotta do is run wires from the clutch switch to the neutral switch harness (under the hood) and BAM. Working cruise.
Also go the reverse lights working. Switch was good, but the gasket that was on it was too thick and it wasn't making proper contact. Put on a thinner gasket and VOILA! Working reverse lights.
Speaking of lights, wired up my 'city' lights in my JDM projectors to be on in the parking light circuit. They just looked too plain without them lit.

1.take out old seats.
2. take out all the interior trim from the rear seats back.
3.grind the driver side hinge. removing the top half that connects to the seat.
4. now take the half that bolts to the car, and drill the small hole so it large enough to accept the male peace on the wrx seat.
5. at this point u can bolt the seat backs in. note that only one bolt (for each side) will line up on the center hinge. (notice the latch is to high for the wrx seat)
6.now take out the latches, latch them to the seat and push the seat back. you will be able to see one hole and one side of the latch. mark the hole and trace the side on to the car.
7. remove the latch from the seat. line it back up to the marked spot for the hole and the traced line. now mark where the other hole will go.
8. drill into your car for the new mounting holes. after drilling spray paint your new holes to prevent rust. 9. repeat 6-8 for the other side.
bolt in latches. now the backs are in
10. bolt the bottoms in using factory mounting holes

Sure they can. Besides fitting all kinds of engines into vanagons, Smallcar.com converts SVX's to 5mt from either a 2.5 N/a or a wrx. You just can't drive like an idiot with that motor. I'm going to use a 2.5 5mt in my 91 SS till I find someone to build my original tranny. If I had the money, I would get a 6mt, no doubt.

Oh yea, a 5MT will be fine, but the gearing of the 6MT would be a blast with all that torque.
The gearing of 6mt's is actually closer together (requiring shifts from 1-2-3 to hit 60 as opposed to 1-2 to hit 60 on a wrx's 5mt). The benefit of the 6mt, then, is that it's shorter gearing can keep a turbo-4 in it's power band more of the time. And the front LSD. And stronger internals.

the hybrid motor has cleared the math stage!
final formula:
port and polished ej22e dual port heads
sti thickness (.027) cometic hybrid headgasket
phase II ej25
Delta 200 regrinds (1000?)

this nets me 12:1 static compression and 8.4:1 dynamic compression

looks like i be buying a wreaked 2003 legacy and then parting it out

other odds and ends:
10mm oil pump
parallel fuel rails -not really needed with my side feed injectors but with a motor this high strung why not
intake manifold spacers
throttle body spacer
MSD coil
new rings and bearings

sure, its pretty simple, with the throttle body there is no water jacket or oil lines to worry about hitting, basically you want to make more of a velocity stack opening in the throttle body opening

Removed my driver's lock and had a lock smith free it up. Can't get the bolt on the lock side of the door handle back in. I was somehow able to remove it from the side, but I can't seem to screw it back in with one finger like I removed it (wonder why ). I'm so close to removing all the window rails, I spent over 15 minutes getting the bolt into the hole, only to have it fall out into the bottom of the door after trying to rotate it.

Are there any tricks to the door handle bolts that you can't actually see? Yes, I'm sure I'm rotating it in the right direction (even weathered techs make that mistake from time to time). Yes, I tried jiggling the handle while pushing the bolt into the hole to make sure everything's aligned. Yes, I have a flex head ratcheting wrench, which I may keep trying with.

Success!
I pressed a new bearing and hub into the driver side spindle, slapped 2 new rotors on the front (i made that part sound easy :smt021 ) and all was cool!

Inspection and an alignment just for fun and the wife is cruising in style :)

The passenger rotor was just a nightmare because the bracket wouldn't come off, 1 bolt rounded and the other sheared... so I had to cut the head off the 1 and hit the bracket with a torch before it would give them up.... then I couldn't find the bolts around town...12 x 30 with 1.25 pitch in case anyone else is hunting

But yeah, another successful round of wrenching on the new addition :smt023

I replaced the stock 2.5 intake ducting with the stock 2.2 intake ducting, eliminating the "torque box." Noticed no difference in power (no suprise there, although many people would say I probably lost eleventy-billion ft-lbs torque), the sound is GREATLY improved, and the look underhood is much less clunky. Win-win as far as I'm concerned, and considerably less expensive than an aftermarket intake.

Yeah, they're alot of fun. The L28s are kind of crap though. They are horribly inefficient. The non-crossflow head, head chamber designs, and cooling system make it very easy to detonate on boost and high SCR, and I have both :/ Fortunately I haven't blown anything up yet. I really like my stromung muffler with a 2.25 midpipe and the headers. it is REALLY deep, but still way too quiet because I have the factory WRX resonator in the midpipe still. The equal length headers really scavenge well, when you engine brake it pops and burbles quite a bit... I always think there is an exhaust leak because of the sound of it, but there isn't.

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2010/04/100_1571jpgt1270596186-1.jpg

its not as cockeyed as it looks, its mostly the curve of the hood.....but im not going to lie, it is cockeyed. it looked level with some beers in me. it doesnt have to look good, its functional.

and this last tank of gas i broke 20 MPG...woot!

that hood scoop by the way is a stock part of this van.....just not in the correct location. guesses? i was pretty happy with myself when i figured out a 0 dollar hood scoop.

^dont get s-tech springs

Whats wrong with the S-tech's?

also put a header and new exhaust on my 84 Toyota 4x4... Sounds like a beast!

they're the worst spring for our cars,

theyre made for cosmetic lowering, s-tech's aren't balanced from factory. You'll be getting an un-even ride that feels like cut springs

This is the part of replacing my AC compressor where I turn the whole garage upside-down looking for TWO LITTLE O-RINGS. https://sl-i.net/FORUM/

EDIT: Found them, they were in car parts box 4 of 10. They should have been on the work bench though. https://sl-i.net/FORUM/

EDIT2: This is the part of replacing my AC compressor where I turn the whole garage upside-down looking for the spare AC belt I had. https://sl-i.net/FORUM/

EDIT3: #%$& the ports are smaller on this compressor--IT'S THE SAME MODEL, HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE? WHO DOES THAT?! Time to make a WTB thread of AC lines... If they changed the other end of the lines I'm gonna be rip-$#!+.

I managed to swap the clutch assembly on the AC compressors, gonna see if I can get the original to work first (it doesn't seems as bad as I have thought). Thanks for the offer, I'll keep it in mind if it doesn't work out.

AH, that reminds me I need to swap out the JDM A/C compressor that came with my engine because the lines and electrical plugs are different.
And hopefully fix the leak at the condenser that it had before the swap.

Not that I need A/C..... but the kiddies ride in my car a lot.

Replaced downstream O2 sensor with OEM sensor.
Replaced driver side ball joint.. (that was not a fun endeavor.. practically beat the shit out of it with an extractor tool)
Installed Kartboy Lightweight drive pulley.. easy.. easier when you move the radiator fans out of the way.

Ran into problems and got stalled (for time). Got my KYB-GR2 struts but my spring compressor stripped stopping me from swapping my springs over.
Detached tie-rod end from the knuckle (another beat the shit out of it experience) discovered that the tie-rod end is pretty much rusted and seized into place on the shaft. Was able to free the locker bolt with some liquid wrench, currently applying liquid wrench to tie rod end assembly in hopes that I can eventually unscrew that bastard.

Car is still sitting with it's front on jackstands. Not like I can drive it anyways. My Group N STI motor mounts don't come in till Monday.

On my way to exchange my spring compressor.. 20 bucks from Harbor Freight, lasted about 5 minutes. Think I'll get my money back and go rent one from Autozone.
Speaking of which..
Autozone forgot to give me my exhaust header gaskets I ordered with some other stuff I picked up. So now I really have a reason to go in there.

Last note before I go eat Chinese food and get my stuff..

Why the hell did Subaru design the struts so that you have to disconnect the brake line from the caliper to slip it through the mount on the strut?

I don't know, I think some people carefully cut the bracket.

i cut mine and bent the metal back into place afterwards. not worth having to bleed the brakes over.

Spring Cleaning, wash, claybar, wax etc. Took the wheels off and fully cleaned them. The snowflakes no longer look goldish!
