Installed brand new carpet and V4 STI front and rear seats (so freakin' comfy!!!). Also had B4 Side skirts and rear aero gaurds painted and installed. Transferred Alpine head unit w/ Ipod cable installed in center armrest, installed new center console and wood grain radio bezel and converted rest of interior to match. Also pulled most of interior out for full cleaning. All that, and after reinstallation of everything, I have one extra screw that I don't know where it goes....ARGH!!!!

Where you get the brand new carpet at?

I actually saw my old Outback a couple days ago. It went from Everson, way down to Everett. Then, the people who bought it from me gave up on it, gave it to a dealership, and someone from Everson went down there and bought it, so it's up and local here again.

just picked up m first legacy for $600 last week and have been fixing some minor stuff to make it more accommodating. today I finally pinpointed the culprit to my power window failure in the down position. After tearing apart the door card swapping out and in the switch and testing the window motor, i finally realized that a corroded connector near the door hinge was the cause. A little bypassing and some soldering of wires and my window is working like gold!.......although my passenger window stopped a few minutes later :smt012 . i guess i have more to do tomorrow.

Pulled back the headliner where it was soaked but didn't see any noticeable holes, probably from the same thing as before. well it was a *simple* plan get bearing pressed in, install knuckle on car, get alignment. not happening today it seems

so to the machine shop drop off knuckle/hub, ~15mins later i get a call "your hub is bad, you'll need a new one before i can press your bearing in"

ok, so i call local the junk yard they have one, so i go to pick it up, it still has the rotor, caliper and ballpoint attached, take it home can't get all the extra crap off to take it back to the machine shop

so i take it to the grandparents garage where the car is on jack stands. put the knuckle in the vice break the first brake bracket bolt get the second one out ok. have to use 5lbs sledge hammer and a big punch to knock the broken bolt out to free the rotor/caliper

Now i have to take the de-crap-ified used hub/knuckle back to the machine shop, wait 45 mins for everything to be pressed in and out run back to the grandparents put the knuckle back on get everything tightened up take a stab @ the camber, get it back on and notice i dont have a helper to hold the breaks for the axle nut, get my step mother to hold the brakes ... get it all put together and it clicks when driving gggahhh

i say screw it it will sort itself out, get to the alignment place the camber is spot on dont need an alignment woo, but the toe is off but i've been driving like that for a while so i'll just wait till i can go somewhere with a lifetime alignment :D drive home still clicking so i pull the wheel and brakes off and its the dust shield rubbing on the abs rings' posts bend it down no more clicking woo!

dang part is 230 bucks?!?!? wth. I didn't buy it on the spot. maybe later, its not that bad in my car to make me do it for that much.

is my power affected? gas mileage?
thanks, Nate
Try to find a used MAF sensor or clean yours with MAF cleaner. That would be way cheaper and they very rarely go bad.

As for power and mileage, probably yes. Cel's usually indicate the computer is in kind of a "safe limp-home" mode, so the tune is no longer optimized.

Thank you. WHAT A DIFFERENCE. :salute: finally got around to doing the MAF cleaner, why I didn't do it before, :smt017
First off, it idles a lot smoother, didn't before. it doesn't cut out at all now, and it feels like it has a lot more top end, and the gas gauge does't seem to drop before my eyes on short drives (last week I tested mileage and got 23mpg on the freeway before I cleaned it, curious to see what I get now.) the maf metal sensor in the thing didn't look that dirty, and didn't really look much different that I could tell after I cleaned it, but it sure makes the car run differently.
Like I said, what a difference!, like having a different car, thanks, saved my 223 bucks, also.

Turbo's oil return line sprung a leak, spewed oil all over the uppipe.

Gave the Tahoe it's 75k mile service while waiting for the Legacy to cool down so I could swap it out.

Hose clamp at the turbo was impossible to get to. Decided to unbolt the hard line from the turbo instead. Noticed that the gasket was rotted - since it's not pressurized I'm taking a gamble and not replacing it since I can't think of where I would find such a thing - does the dealer carry misc gaskets for the TD04 WRX turbo?

Well that's not the worst of it - spent 2 hours trying to put the bolts in to bolt the hard line back to the turbo. There is not much room to work so it's playing a game of fishing around with an extension. Finally gave up after working 1 hour in the dark, managed to only get 1 bolt on. With one bolt missing it's actually not too bad - it's only seeping oil - much better than the spewing action earlier today.

Need to figure out how to get this thing put together right though. Only thing I can think of is to remove the whole darn turbo and put it together.

Yup. Does suck without people around when it comes to that crank pulley. But, the trick is to wedge something in the flywheel to keep it from spinning. :)

noticed that now the driver wheel is making even more noise, and when im turning instead of it just getting louder it sounds like something is banging and the sound resonates throughout the driver side of the engine bay, not just in the wheel well. Gonna take apart the assembly 2morrow and pull the axle. and suggestions on what i should look for? the original thought was wheel bearing but this noise is alien to me.

Insurance should cover it. I haven't even spoken to my insurance yet so I haven't got the slightest clue... Not sure how difficult it is to repair fiberglass either. I'll need to find someone around here that does that kind of work and see how difficult/expensive it is. The rear door is obviously easily replaceable though so that's no biggy. What is the trick to taking a proper oil level reading? Seems like however I put the dipstick in it comes up showing its a couple quarts high, even though I just put the 4.2 quarts in.
Anyone else notice this? I have been changing oil a lot sooner just to be sure it isn't running low,

Anyone else notice this? I have been changing oil a lot sooner just to be sure it isn't running low,

drive the car until it's warm, pull up to level ground, turn off engine, wait 30 seconds or so, then get the reading. As the manual says, this is easiest done when you are at a gas station filling up the tank. You can pay, start filling the tank, then read the dipstick :smt023

Soul Shinobi
11-16-2009, 12:55 AM
Did you leave the oil filter in place? That probably holds half a quart. Make sure you wipe the dipstick off completely, and don't turn it upside-down or sideways when you take it out. Look at both sides, sometimes oil will get farther up one side, I think the accurate reading is the lowest dry spot. I think that recently added oil can drip onto the dipstick, so let it settle for a half hour or more before checking.

Although it runs quite lean at idle right now (15.5 on the wideband) so it needs a tune badly. But thats to be expected going from a 2.0 to a 2.5 and fully deleting the TGVs. Gotta get it off the stands this week and take it for a test run and then get it tuned hopefully by this weekend.

If there's any way for you to take a video, that would REALLY help us to understand also. Explaining noises can work, but it generally leaves everyone somewhat head itchy. ;)

the mechanic said he didnt hear any bearing noise in the front, the only noise he heard was in the rear when he had it up on the lift, which is what the other mechanic told me too. heh, ya, well I did have a video but its not the best quality, older too the noise has gotten much worse since then, but now its gone so i cant really give you guys a vid of the noise. Someone pointed out to me that most of my under-engine boots are busted, Inner CV, Rack & Pinion, etc. and that got me scratchin my head. idk what caused them to break but they said that the CV boot bein busted is most likely the cause of the noise since thats the only one I knew of and its been like that for a while, like 1-2 years :angry3: , and since there's no grease in there, and the sound resonates from that area, he's pretty certain its the cause. Something I could have fixed 2 yrs ago when i first knew about it is giving me a lot of trouble.......i hate not thinkin ahead b4 i do things >.<

I've actually had this happen to me before as well. Somehow the boot cover had become torn and I kept seeing grease inside the RH front wheel and had no idea where it was coming from. Mine also had no grease left and by the time I figured it out, it was too late. Started making strange cracking/screeching noises and I ended up replacing the whole axle piece out. Didn't cost too much (roughly $140 or so) and all is well again.

now have proper working JDM headlights, and have learned an important lesson:

when you are permanently grounding your low beam bulbs, so that they stay on with the high beams make sure the car is running, this is doubly important if you have JDM fogs too because when you get all the bulbs going you have: 6 55w bulbs, 2 35w bulbs, 6 ~12w bulbs; for an approx total of 406 w draw or about 39 amps from the battery, you will need a jump start lol

already on it, bringing it in on tuesday, had the mech drive it around though today cuz the noise came back and he was like, "uh......never heard that before". told him i'd pinpoint where the noise is coming from this weekend but im pretty certain its the axle, he said aright.

but keepin on topic, brought it to the exhaust shop today and had a resonator put in, hoping that it would quiet down the roar and kill the raspy sound. Didnt really quiet it down, but the sound doesn't carry as much anymore, used to be able to hear me driving down the road from 2 blocks away, now its prolly down to about a block :smt005 . Rasp is gone 2, now i just gotta wrap the headers to tone down the front end noise.

call me crazy jey but thats prob what u may have to do (removing the turbo) better to take it all apart and deal with the problem that way rather then dickin around in the dark and only gettin frustrated haha

Got all the gaskets I need so started to remove the turbo. Downpipe came off fine, 2nd bolt on the uppipe got completely rounded off. Someone must not have used anti-seize. :sigh: Time to find a 13mm 12-point socket and hammer it on...

Only other option I can think of if that doesn't work is to just remove the turbo and uppipe together and unbolt the uppipe from the header.

I was in Olympia and fixed friends expedition alternator, didn't have my tools. Went to Fred Meyer and all they had was this weird universal socket thing, so I had to buy it.
This thing is sweet. I have used to a few times where nothing else would work.
It has tons of pins in it, it fits over any bolt within a range (5mm to 17 mm or something), and grabs on, doesn't strip good bolts, and grabs super tight on stripped bolts. It also allows for putting it on an angle where a universal won't fit, like if you can't get quite straight onto the bolt with socket and extension. It was 20 bucks, included 3/8 socket wrench. Stripped bolts no problem anymore,

Broke down last night (after a 12 hour shift...) on my way home. Engine just completely cut out in 2nd gear. Still had electricity, but no power, no power steering, no brakes.

Turns out my fuel pump blew the high pressure reservoir on the assembly. No fuel pressure = no go.

$350 later, it's back to how it was 24 hours ago. Another chunk i could have used to do something fun with it.... lame

Being flat bed towed; luckily it was my friends trailer, so we towed it to his shop so I could work on it all day today (never done a fuel pump before, so it was a new experience.)

Well the pump itself from Checker was $125, but not only was it the wrong part, it also didn't seem to be the problem.

Since it was the high pressure reservoir that failed, which is part of the pump assembly (meaning it's a part of what the pump attaches to), I had to buy a new assembly from Subaru (which included a new pump and everything anyway). $350 was actually wholesale price since I was at my friend's shop doing the work. Retail is $400+tax.

And It wasn't worth buying a used one from a junk yard, because who knows how long until that one fails.

Shitty either way.

gator grip? lol

Well I ended up using a poor man's gator grip and just hammered a 12-point 14mm socket onto it really good (removed the wastegate actuator so I had room) and it came right off. I even had a spare nut in the basement to replace it with since I stripped a couple last time too!

Tried to drive it after putting it all back together Saturday - darn thing was still burning oil. Since it's not the oil return line now the only possibilities are that the turbo seals are going out or there is a heck of a lot of leftover oil to burn off.

Or maybe I didn't let the ultra copper silicone gasket maker cure for long enough. I left it overnight and all day Sunday and tried to drive it this morning. No smoke, but still a faint smell of oil. Hopefully things only continue to improve.

Started my grounding kit by running an additional parallel wire from battery positive to the alternator, and a really thick one parallel from negative to the transmission just like stock, which I did because that's where I'm going to route the rest of the grounding kit to so I don't have to run everything to the battery itself.

Got the car realigned today, they still can't get my front left camber negative! Annoying... Don't know why it's being a pain, I might get and aftermarket eccentric kit to put in the bottom of the struts to get more movement. I detailed the alignment issue in my thread, click here (https://sl-i.net/FORUM/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=16072&p=184575#p184575).

car's goin in the shop 2morrow, getting new balljoints, new CV Axles, replacing Rack & Pinion boot on driver side, new tires and an alignment. cant wait to get it back.

Painted the PS belt cover w/blue enamel, probably gonna make a full paint scheme out of it with the engine bay when i get the car back, just havent thought of what I want done yet. Also decided that I'm gonna go back to black with the car and just have blue accents, my buddy pretty much ruined my thoughts of having the car blue cuz of the job he did, was gonna go back to him but his house and the garage got repo'd by the bank and he's nowhere to be found......:/.....anywho, I'm looking into going flat black, but I'm just gonna have either maaco do it or save up for a compressor and a gun and paint it myself, been practicing myself with other projects around the house and such, getting better at it.

When the car gets back gonna make a sound clip of how the exhaust sounds now with the resonator installed, sounds a lot better and has a deeper tone, not too much different from how it used to be, but better nonetheless.

yea, I'm on the fence, I could just get the axleback and then make a midpipe myself... a stick of 10 gauge 2.25" pipe is only 30 bucks and then a couple of flanges and make a few bends and a few cuts and a few welds. The hardest part would be the flange for the factory donut gasket. I could just cut off the extension for than and run a flat flange on it...

I wonder if the stromung midpipe is the right length for the legacy... they list the impreza and the forester but the not leggy, i guess I'll find out when I call to order.

evolegacy

i dont think it is only because i know that the impreza is shorter than the legacy, and a lil more info, idk if there are any mid-pipes that match up to the OBX headers, think thats why i went with the custom job, been a while so i dont remember.

The midpipe needs to be lengthened. The obx header/cat section ends where the stock location ends.

The stromung midpipe is discontinued anyway, so I'm gonna use the WrX mid-pipe that I pull off my friends car this weekend. It's a 2.25 diameter and uses the donut gasket so I will just lengthen it to fit the legacy when I put it all in. And best of all it's a free leftover.

They got the front camber to -1.0 degrees, and even got the rear to -0.22 degrees toe out. Gotta love their 30-day guarantee, I went back to them twice and it didn't cost me a thing. The specs I used were Whiteline's recommendation, which they have for just about every car they tune. http://www.whiteline.com.au/search.php (http://www.whiteline.com.au/search.php)

For second gen Legacies the 'Handling' (non-race) specs are:

Front Camber - degrees: -0.75 to -1.25 (I did -1.0)
Front Caster - degrees: max (nonadjustable without mods)
Front Toe - degrees/side: 0
Rear Camber - degrees: -1 to -1.25
Rear Caster - degrees: N/A (nonadjustable, period)
Rear Toe - degrees/side: -0.2

Driving home from work and my power steering belt snaps, great. Managed to get home before the battery died, spent a while in the -6C temperature trying to fix it, only to have my tensioner for my a\c belt snap at the adjustment bolt! yay seized pieces of junk, and my desire to meddle with the tension on something that isn't broken but merely loose! an hour later, and some serious McGyvering and one belt is on and working great  but who the hell needs a\c in -6c weather :smt021 . Took it home, hosed it off, and called it a day. Need to change the oil and rotate the tires on the Forester tomorrow. Next week the engine comes out of the Suburban, if nothing comes up. Should be fun.

The clearcoat on one side is peeling, badly = $1500-2500 to respray the car.

The headgaskets were going, for the third or fourth time: $1250-1750 to square that away.

4.5 years of ownership and I'd just had enough. I took most of the fancy bits off it and they've been sold. I'm pleased that it's still in respectable condition and will carry on in the ownership of another, new, Legacy enthusiast.

traction question. I had my right wheels in mud, on slight up hill slant. drivers side wheels on pavement. I just sat there giving light gas and right wheels just spun, didn't move at all. :smt009 :smt010 :smt011

question: can my rear end diff., which I thought was limited slip, be worn out? worn out so that its acting like open diff.? :smt017 can I fix that by taking off cover and putting in new clutches or something? anyone know a link to a thread about this?

If you center diff is acting more 'open' than it should be, it could be causing just about all the power to go to the slipping wheel. Do you have an automatic or manual? What trim level? Most automatics have a default torque split of 90F/10R.

Today I picked up my snow tires, I had them mounted on spare steel rims. Turns out one rim was kind of damaged on the inside lip, and also had large balancing weights on it. Hope it'll be okay, I might hammer the lip a bit and pay to have it rebalanced, if needed.

You don't have an LSD, it's that simple. It can't wear out because Subaru uses viscous LSDs, not clutch-type.

You mean my car doesn't have that option? You say subarus uses LSD, but I don't have one? Can I get one? If my car has an open rear end diff., seems kinda lame. I want most traction I can get, what can I do? I have a later '95 L model, thanks, Nate

Nate, like most Subarus you have a center viscous LSD the distributes torque front and rear, but your front and rear diffs are open. GTs and some (all?) Outbacks, as well as 2.5RSs and WRXs have rear LSDs, STIs have front and rear. You would need one with a final drive ratio to match your drivetrain, but you could swap one in. I think that replacing the whole rear diff would be easier. Doing the front diff is a professional job, don't worry about it for now.

Another thing I did today: just spent a whole hour organizing my kit of winter gear for pulling people out of the snow and whatnot. It's 43.5 pounds, but that's offset a bit by removing the 29 pound spare tire that I can't use with my taller than stock snow tires (ground clearance ftw!).

Cut the donut flange off the OBX headers tonight and welded on a 2.25" flat flange to match up to the one I'm gonna weld onto the WRX mid-pipe when I install everything. Midpipe showed up today, I'm just waiting on the Stromung to show up tomorrow. Then I get to borrow a lift and do the exhaust and a full driveline bushing setup.

thanks for the info, helpful. so your car has open front/rear diffs. looks like. and you pull people out of snow? so sounds like your car goes pretty well in the snow, I haven't tried mine yet. I've already done the bushings to 2 WRXs and it is amazing. Group N motor and tranny mounts, tranny saddle bushings, diff outrigger bushings, kartboy front and rear shifter bushings, TiC shift linkage trunion, and kartboy shift lever. I have the superpro diff bushings to put in too but I wont be touching them at this point because of all the rusted nuts and bolts holding the diff on the car. Once I get new hardware I can drop the diff and replace those two bushings also. I can't wait to get it taken care of, it cleans up the driveline SOOO much. The first WRX I did used cusco motor and tranny mounts and it is quite harsh, but the second one is group N and they are really nice. They're quiet and stiffen things up really nicely. With that setup and the full exhaust the leggy should feel totally different.

I actually haven't driven this one in the snow, but my old '92 has the same drivetrain (well, taller gearing in the first gens) and I used to yank people out all the time. It's a little violent, you have to be careful. Now, I've certainly gotten stuck, only once I needed more than a shovel and a push though. It certainly can get stuck, but how you drive makes a bigger difference than a rear LSD in many cases. Because my friend is not as keen on snow driving as I am, he got stuck going down an unplowed dirt road in his 2002 Outback (rear LSD and more ground clearance!) and I had to pull him out with my '92, and I didn't have snow tires, but it wasn't any trouble for me. Get some practice very gradually increasing the depth of snow you try to drive in, learn to keep momentum when it gets tough. Keep a straight shovel, maybe a couple carpet squares or something to throw under spinning tires, a tow rope; you will need them, one day, hopefully not for you, but you will need them.

Put my snow tires on, which are taller than stock (and a lot taller than the smaller than stock tires I have for the summer). Braking takes more force, forgot how crappy my brakes really were. Tires are loud but grip well. Comfortable with the high sidewalls, I could get used to that.

I also started organizing my tires, I have 12 freaking 14" tires. 3 are junk (well, they all are, only a few are legal, these 3 are just unusable), and I have two similar sets I can use for autocross with a spare, I guess. Only one set of wheels (and one spare) to put them on though.

On the 3rd day of Christmas I drove my Subaru, with a 3" exhaust, 2 Sparco seats and a power slide into a pear tree.

On the 4th day of Christmas I drove my Subaru, with 4 alloy wheels, 3" exhaust, 2 Sparco seats and a power slide into a pear tree.

On the 5th day of Christmas I drove my Subaru, with FIVE POUNDS OF BOOST!
4 alloy wheels, 3" exhaust, 2 Sparco seats and a power slide into a pear tree.

On the 6th day of Christmas I drove my Subaru, with a 6 speaker stereo, five pounds of boost! 4 alloy wheels, 3" exhaust, 2 Sparco seats and a power slide into a pear tree.

On the 7th day of Christmas I drove my Subaru, with a 7" DVD, 6 speaker stereo, five pounds of boost! 4 alloy wheels, 3" exhaust, 2 Sparco seats and a power slide into a pear tree.

On the 8th day of Christmas I drove my Subaru, with 8 off road fog lights, 7" DVD, 6 speaker stereo, five pounds of boost! 4 alloy wheels, 3" exhaust, 2 Sparco seats and a power slide into a pear tree.

On the 9th day of Christmas I drove my Subaru, with a 9 pound flywheel, 8 off road fog lights, 7" DVD, 6 speaker stereo, five pounds of boost! 4 alloy wheels, 3" exhaust, 2 Sparco seats and a power slide into a pear tree.

On the 10th day of Christmas I drove my Subaru, with 10" rotors, 9 pound flywheel, 8 off road fog lights, 7" DVD, 6 speaker stereo, five pounds of boost! 4 alloy wheels, 3" exhaust, 2 Sparco seats and a power slide into a pear tree.

On the 11th day of Christmas I drove my Subaru, with 11 gallons of gas, 10" rotors, 9 pound flywheel, 8 off road fog lights, 7" DVD, 6 speaker stereo, five pounds of boost! 4 alloy wheels, 3" exhaust, 2 Sparco seats and a power slide into a pear tree.

On the 12th day of Christmas I drove my Subaru, with 12V chargers, 11 gallons of gas, 10" rotors, 9 pound flywheel, 8 off road fog lights, 7" DVD, 6 speaker stereo, five pounds of boost! 4 alloy wheels, 3" exhaust, 2 Sparco seats and a power slide into a pear tree.

Today it snowed 6-8 inches, got to try out my snow tires (bought used on Craig's List). I thought they sucked, they are ten years old after all, BUT THEN I drove on a plowed road instead of in 6" of snow and realized they're a fair amount better than my all-seasons. Not sure if my alignment has an effect, I've got -1.0 degrees camber up front and -0.2 degrees toe out in the rear. I can feel the tail kick out easily from the rear toe, but do you guys think the front camber will alter winter driving, and how so?

I hit a tree today... :smt022

cars at the body shop now, I'll get pictures up tonight from my computer.

I was putting along on backroad with lots of space between me and the van in front of me, brake lights on because it is downhill. Then I realize the van decides to stop for no reason when we are going downhill because they are scared when another car is coming the other way. I try to go to the right to squeeze around the stopped van but before I get close the van starts to pull right towards where I was gonna go!!! So I readjust and go right into the tree... Thankfully I was putting along slow, the airbags didnt even pop, it just pushed in the hood and right fender, broke the right headlight and destroyed the bumper and pushed the front of the car in so the fan is against the engine. Nothing mechanical broke thankfully, not even the radiator. No spilled fluids at all. Once the body work gets done I can put my projector headlights in and I even have another timing belt cover to replace the one thats cracked now. While it's in the shop I figure I will have them take care of the 3 subaru rust spots on it too if they have to buy the paint anyway because thats the expensive stuff.

Sigh. It's been a rough time since I bought this in august. Headgaskets, tires, the exhaust is falling apart (new parts sitting here to go in)...

I'll get you a pic of the damage, don't worry.

Well it was slow at the shop today so i decided to work on the GT. I installed the silver stars, replaced the fog light bulbs with bright white ones, replaced the door and rear shelf speakers with later model Subaru speakers, had to drill some new holes in the speakers to make them fit, replaced the ash tray light bulb, took apart the heater controls to check the bulbs that don't work, i will have to find some replacements, balanced the tires, installed a LED bulb in the glove box, installed LED bulbs for the tag lights, and removed the old dealer sticker from the rear. I am waiting on some Flitz so I can clean my headlamps and fogs.

I only have comprehensive. With something 12 years old it's not really worth the extra cost for full coverage. The car gets to the point where it is worth so little that any accident with it runs on the brink of getting it totaled. Also, in 12 years of driving, doing about 40,000 miles a year, this is the first time I have ever hit anything. I'm just gonna pay for it, it sucks but what can ya do.
