I've done 5% all the way around (not windshield) to every car I've ever owned. My eyes are also super sensitive. I've actually looked around trying to find a doctor that could prescribe windshield tint for me. Not 5%, of course, but something like 25% or so would be fantastic.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Are you ok, Huffer? That looks like one hell of a hit.

Today I cleaned my interior and put in my new Husky Liners. They fit well, but the sides are a little warped from being in their box. Should work themselves out. Brakes were supposed to be delivered yesterday...then today... and now supposedly tomorrow. Damn fedex...

Again, late, but what happened:
So, Thursday, I get a call from the manager of the local Dominos "Can you come in for an interview on Friday at 3?"
"Sure," says I.
"Your car is in running order, correct?"
"Absolutely. I just fixed it's major issue."
So, of course, 3 hours later? Big cloud of steam as all that fresh antifreeze that I just put in a few days before comes dribbling out of a fresh, new hole in the radiator. So, I spent the next morning and $130 or so putting in what I think is a first-generation used radiator and fans. Because the bolts holding the fans I had in my car were rusted solid. Also, looking at them, I don't think my 2nd-gen fans would have fit on the 1st-gen radiator. the "new" ones have a metal shroud, and the originals were plastic. So, the mounting pegs on the bottom didn't fit, but fortunately, the people at Subaru made holes that it does fit into. But the top radiator bracket does not fit at all, and I have zip-ties holding it in place. But it's working fine, for now. *knock on wood*

Oh, and I made it to the interview on time, no problem.

Also got my first speeding ticket ever yesterday. 61 in a 45 zone. $150. Think I'm going to go to court to ask for a reduction in fines as it's my first ticket.

Went to court today, got the prosecutor to change the speeding ticket to a parking violation, 0 points. Cost me $175 and change, but it's worth it because now my driver's record stays clean and penalty free.

Muse
08-20-2012, 03:55 PM
I'm missing part of this, I'm sure, but how in the hell did a speeding ticket get turned into a parking violation? were you doing 50 in a carpark?

Thomistopheles
08-20-2012, 04:29 PM
The same way my 70 in a 55 was turned into a "dirty windshield" ticket.
(My speedo was off in my first supra and I didn't know it. Whoops.)

You have a chat with the prosecutor, and they're usually pretty lenient if you aren't a habitual speeder or anything... they can change it to something else in order to avoid points on your license.

Huffer
08-20-2012, 05:05 PM
^^ yep. They still have to account for some kind of violation (and this is where the cogs turn on making money) and usually if you tell them what you want (essentially a plea bargain), they'll reduce the fine/penalty to something more palatable. In my case, my fine went UP to $176 (instead of $149) but I don't get any points, and the mark of "speeding ticket" is removed from my record. When insurers look at your driving record, they're looking for the number of speed related offenses, DUIs etc. They're not looking at someone who gets a lot of parking tickets.

Today I took apart a 5MT! I'm a trans noob, but it was really easy...y'know, since I can read and have the FSM. I'm keeping the center diff from it in case anyone needs one.

Other than doing that, I stripped down another intake manifold for the injectors, rails, sensors, and TB. The throttle body took a hit to the inlet at some point and bent/cracked, so I need to strip it down, TIG weld the crack, and paint it to match my faaaaaaaabulous clean intake manifold.

Not a dent, just some grease.

These were actually a replacement from Borla under warranty. After they broke at the flange he had them fixed, when it broke at the collector he was over it. At this point they're 4-5 years old and I doubt that even if he wanted a replacement he would go through the trouble of finding the receipt. This really wasn't an uncommon issue with these during the time frame he bought them in.

Also, I painted over the body rot with some Rustoleum flat Jade green. not the same color as Wintergreen, not even close... But I felt like something had to be done.

Don't feel bad, my new suspension sat in my garage for about 3 months before it got put on. As for today I plasti-dipped my USDM and JDM grills. Eet Snau CAME HOME!
I had a 96 Volvo 855GLT,
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/08/DSCN3141-1.jpg
and was fine with it... no problem, liked the car. Made it a 7 passenger, tinted the rear doors back, threw on the rack for travel and put about 4k on it, in 3 months of ownership. I get a call from my sister-in-law ( those who've been here for years, know where this is going  )

S-I-L; Hey?...?... WatchaDoooo-een?
Okin. ; WTH? What?
S-I-L; Can you come check this car out for me?
Okin- k.

Get in the car, tools and all and I'm on my way. I get there and I'm not even out the Volvo yet,

S-I-L; Oooohh that's nice. Wanna trade?.
Okin- Want what?
S-i-L- I think he wants to go home. He keeps squeeling and draggin his ass. He got something hanging from his behind, and....
Okin- Sure, when???

After 4 hours of cleaning (a few pounds of dirt, grime, dust and a world of other things.) New brakes at all 4 corners, and a few adjustments here and there, he's purring again. Happy to be home. But then again, he's got a little less than 20k of old lady driving and less than 12k on a rebuilt 2.2 I did about 2 years ago. He's also sporting recent tires at all 4 corners and is still sitting on Bugeye Stuts and Tenabe GF210's. The JDM headlights are still intact sans 1 tab. He looks a bit beat in the hatch area. 3years with my sis-in-law and also my nephews BMX career was launched with Eet doing the hauling to get him there. The interior is still good with the exceptions of
the cargo area carpet stained
1 kicked in speaker grill and demolished speaker
the tint being scratched everywhere his bike made contact
Grill center knocked in
and some maintenance and other minor bumps, I'd say he fared well for being away for 3 years. :smt023

No pics of his current state, and I am considering selling him for priority reasons, but I don't think that'll happen anytime soon. :smt023 We'll see. But for now, an old pic...

This AM I gave the rears a minor fender roll with a shovel handle :)

I am going to track down a wooden bat and roll them all the way early this week. They we're rubbing on corners/ bumps last night, luckily the current tires are already shot, but I am gonna roll them over all the way before I put my 215/45/17's on

(It was before too so i'm glad!) Idlers i pulled out were getting loose, and water pump was developing some noise so definately glad i decided to do this 'preventative maintenance'!

I got the passenger side knuckle completely off last night, and of course, stripped the damn bolt for the ball joint, so I will be drilling that out. Hoping to have money for the alignment as well.

Mark, question for you about the manual shifter. When i get alot of rattling from my shifter while im driving when my hand is not on it is that the bushings that are worn out,and if they are is it a tough replacement like dropping the trans or can you replace the parts from inside the car by removing the shifter boot and so on? Thanks bro.... :smt017

eekay

Sure sounds like the bushings to me. That, or the shifter isn't seated correctly. As far as replacing the bushings, everything can be done from inside the car and underneath the car. No transmission dropping required.

Thanks, it is not severe but the car has 218.000 on it and it is the only noise that you hear in the car with the radio off while going through the gears, just curious if it is a common Subie thing or is my car just showing it's age. Is it easy to tear down the shifter from inside to replace the bushings or is there some special tools and knowledge needed?

Perdue
09-02-2012, 03:14 PM
It's pretty straight forward for the ones inside. Replacing the linkage bushings below requires dropping the transmission crossmember and and using punches to knock a pin out of the linkage. Search for the subaru wobbly shifter fix and you should come up with a DIY from RS25.

Wiscon_Mark
09-02-2012, 03:25 PM
Here's the DIY on the shifter linkage bushings:

http://www.ludicrous-speed.com/wiki/ind ... hifter_Fix (http://www.ludicrous-speed.com/wiki/index.php?title=Shanes_Impreza_Wobble_Shifter_Fix)

The bushings I was talking about were the shifter stay bushings, which are different. There are also the bushings inside the actual shifter itself that connect it to the linkage, but its unlikely those are the problem.

Future reference - keep these questions in the tech forums. This thread is for one purpose and will not be very helpful if everyone's talking about everything in it.

Grrrr...Just finished beating on the driver's side for a couple of hours and I've come back with some carnage. This side is horribly rusted. The tie rod has been replaced, and it appears that the balljoint has as well. I broke the lower strut bolt and cannot get it to come out for anything. I have tried rocking it back and forth, with and without the upper bolt, turning the wheel and trying to knock it out with a punch...it won't budge. It barely turns with a breaker bar. I also had one hell of a time getting the tie rod out, and now the ball joint won't budge...the axle won't either. For now, I have sprayed everything down with WD-40 and I'm gonna let it sit...else, I'll take a sledge to the whole thing. [/endrant]

yesterday i gave my car a well deserved wash and wax. I also decided that when I do my brakes (soon) I am going with a low dust pad over a performance pad. I spent 30 mins on my new rims alone and it has only been 3 weeks sence I last washed them . :smt011

Also I tried using a clay bar for the first time after reading praise from several fellow members and I have to say i'm not too impressed with it. I did the hood, bumper, and drivers side before I said screw it because it was not making a difference. And after my wax job I cannot tell a single difference between where I used it and where I did not.

Do you use a rotary or DA polisher? You'd probably notice a difference in how much dirt comes off the paint and goes into the pads. It may not be visible to the naked eye, especially with a black car. Maybe try taking some macro photos before/after next time?

Clay bars are for removing bonded contaminants, grit and junk that has sort of glued itself on. Some clays are more abrasive than others. If you put a ziploc bag on your hand and run it across the paint, a clay barred surface feels like glass while a surface with contaminants feels like sandpaper. You won't see a visual difference in most cars unless they're really nasty.

You must must must clay to remove those contaminants before polishing, or your pad will grab that grit and give you brand new scratches/swirls at a rate of 600-2000 rpm...

Guy didnt have insurance... Bent driver seat, cracked rear bumper cover, pooched out QT panel, rippled metal in the trunk... Not looking good... :smt013

Going for an estimate tomorrow...

Sorry to hear it. Hope it all works out for you and your friend is OK. I wonder if you insurance will go after the guy personally since he was uninsured.

A smiley isn't enough to convey my feelings about this.

WTF is with everybody's cars getting nailed lately?! I hope things work out... uninsured drivers can go **** themselves with a rusty rake.

LOL... that vid/pic is funny!

UPDATE!
So I got a couple of estimates... $1500-1700 before pulling the cover for inspection for more damage. Oh, and I called the kids number, no good... I'm going to try it again later tonight. If I dont hear from him by tomorrow, I'm calling Pemco. That kid has no idea how F***ED he is going to be if I call my insurance.

Also, my buddy says he's got a still neck, but is fine. I want him to get checked out, but I know he's a stubborn guy!

Got my Fozzie goodies in today! Paint supplies, a new grille, hatch handle, wiper motor (rear), switch blanks, tweeters, and a jack handle.

I put on the new handle & wiper motor (and subsequently the Honda wiper arm).
I also plugged the tweeters in. Sooooo much better. I really like that the SG tweeter kit aims them more properly as well.

Bought a bigger hammer and got the driver's side ball joint loose and then took the whole spindle and strut assembly out together. The bolt will not come out, still. I can get it to turn just a little, but no matter how hard I hit it, it won't come out. My only option, that I see, is to grind the head of the bolt off and remove the strut...ill just get the front spindles from Rogers old car when I go up.

It's kind of depressing. I had hoped to drive the car to Cleveland when I go to get my transmission from Roger...no suck luck. This thing has almost spent more time in the garage or broken down in the driveway than it has on the road.

Today I:

1. Flushed coolant
2. Installed neon coilpack
3. Change spark plugs and spark plug wire
4. Changed oil

Thats it.. It runs lot smoother..
Found out where my click and tick and misfiring was coming from when driving, it was cause my old coil pack number four terminal was rusted so was the inside of the spark plug wire. So when I dod my spark plugs my number four spark plug looked like it was melted. Did all that and changed the oil, no more misfire, ticking or clicking. So happy.. Lol.. Runs like a champ..

Installed some junkyard picked parts on my sedan today. Only two issues to fix, no oil light and the TPS is throwing a code. But the car will now start and run but if I push the gas really fast, the car stumbles, the idle drops to about 500, then jumps up to where it should be in relation to where I have the gas pedal.

Well, it's been a good car weekend here. First we spent yesterday going to pick up my wifes new car after her beloved 2.5RS coupe was totaled out on a deer hit: 2004 WRX with a ej257, forged pistons, ported/polished 2.0 heads, GT52 element tuning turbo, HUGE TMIC, pro-torque stall converter, 133k miles (13k on motor/build) and it's damn near mint inside and out.

I think she likes it, the whole drive home pretty much looked like this according to my sister
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/09/DSC_8293edit-1.jpg

and the car
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/09/DSC_8309edit-1.jpg

Then today I FINALLY had time to roll/pull all of my fenders, rust proof the inside of the lip, and put my 05' LGT wheels on

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/09/DSC_8315edit-1.jpg

And for fun, here it is parked next to my old car (of former 2.2GT-T honor) that is my sister's car to show stock vs. Lowered:

I think this was because of an accident that one of the previous owners got into. There's virtually no rust on the frame of my Outback, which is older.

My guess is that the owner who crashed it never reported it to insurance and got the frame piece straightened, but it wasn't coated properly.

I wanted to remove my fog grilles a while back to polish the lenses...but I planned on using hand tools to remove them and not a chunk of 2x4 and an empty sawzall case at 60mph, courtesy of the truck in front of me. Those grills shattered into a million pieces. The bumper and fogs themselves were miraculously unscathed.

You have no idea, bro. I have so much on my plate right now, I'm actually BEGGING for cancer. Lol. If something can go wrong for me, it will. Kinda sucks considering how humble and helpful I try to be. I'm no asshat! Why me?! :) Anyhow, car still looks great!
I swear, sometimes karma gets confused and starts rewarding douchebags and punishing good dudes. Things will work themselves out if you stick with it.

Other than the car stressing me out, things are OK here. Feels like everything decided to require repair or replacement at once, and this year's not doing so great with winter prep details. No funds for tires. No funds for pilot + TO bearings and fluids to get my engine in. No funds for spacers + camber bolts + alignment so I can get my WRX suspension in. It's driving me nuts, because it's so close to being done and over with.

None of this would be a problem if I got this car when I lived at home. All these bills and adult responsibilities suck, lol! :smt019

Know how you feel. I've got tophats, a clutch system, and a rusty frame to fix before winter, and my tires are absolutely shit. I'd never even heard of the brand before I bought the Fozzie. ugh.

Blacked out my rear corners with VHT Nite Shades. Going to do the liftgate plastic tomorrow, I hope. I'm debating if I want to black out the reverse lights, Probably won't.

Things are actually on the up and up for me... finally got a crap ton of parts ready to ship out to patient folks, the new HU and mudguards + keyless entry system for the wife's Ody came in.
Work has finally slowed down enough that I can get home at a reasonable hour.

Now, if only the new baby would sleep longer than 2hrs at night, we'd be good.

Washed my BG... in the dark. We'll see how that turned out in the morning.

You know, for a detailer...the outside of my car is usually pretty filthy. Maybe it's the same phenomenon as mechanics driving around junkers. :smt102 Things are slowing down lately, so maybe I'll be able to get some things done soon. Damn gravel roads, always making me press the happy pedal and generate tons of dust...

Basically, this is what's happening to me:

http://www.subaruoutback.org/forums/66- ... -away.html (http://www.subaruoutback.org/forums/66-problems-maintenance/28100-2003-subaru-h6-overheating-trouble-wont-go-away.html)

This has been one of the worst days for me in recent history. I bought the H6 from a dealer a week ago. The same day, it starts overheating. I top it off with coolant and go on for a few days with no issue. Then it does it again. I go through all the usual in my head but the H6 isn't suppose to pop headgaskets or loose water pumps and the fans are working. I read that thread a few nights ago, got worried and threw away my pride and called my Subie specialist. He looks at and within 15 mins says its a cracked head.

F this car. I thought I would like it but after just a few days, I didn't. So in an anger driven, low blood sugar splender, I hassled the shit out of the dealership. They have agreed to buy the car back but they want to test it themselves first to come up with a fair price. I'll have to wait and see. Until then, I sorta have to leave for Florida in a few days. Thank goodness I kept the old car that I actual love.

Was there something else about it you didn't like? I mean, they should fix the heads for you. That's a very fixable issue.

Maybe the car gods are trying to tell me to upgrade to hella 500s.

I have some 99 SUS grills that are kinda cool looking if you're interested... :smt023

I got a new/used rear bumper for the BD yesterday... Complete with beam and foam... Even in white! It does need some work, but thats ok, I got it for cheap...

Also hopefully going to look at a BE GT parts car today... So I might have some patch panels for you guys if they are needed...

Today I borrowed $76 from my mom to pay the rest of the mechanic's bill off, now I owe her instead of them. Then we left the car at the shop to be looked at since the new radiator (as of 2 weeks ago now) is leaking about 1L of fluid each trip to/from work (10 miles each way, so .1 L/mile). Smh... so yeah, now I get to pay her off, then I can start buying parts for the car from members on here, as mentioned a couple months ago now.

^^^I've been there with the moms. At least its just a small amount of money.

I appreciated the car for all it had to offer but it felt so damn lazy that it didn't even seem alive. While at the Subie Shop, I drove a BH 2.5 5MT and that laziness was gone: that felt like a Subaru. The H6 is just boring and the driving position compared to the BD/BK/BG is too distant from what the car is actually doing. Other than that, it was the bad blood and distrust I had towards it for doing what it did. On top of the overheating issue, a tire blew for no real reason.

Found 4 cars I want! errrr.... An 01 BE for $1500 with some problem (not much info in the add), a 03 BE with blown HG's for $2000 (hoping for a call back, a 96 BG that needs a motor for $1500 (super clean), and a 99 SUS thats a roll over for $1400 (parts car).

I want that 03 BE! Just short like $500 for it... Still gonna look at it if he still has it.

HA! This is true... I talked the guy down to $1600 on the 03 BE, but then the paper work was fishy... Then a friend called at told me about a 82 Datsun 280ZX for $200... It's for parts, but now I can say I have had a 280! :smt026

Should be getting it sometime next week.

decke48 and his family stopped in from Mass. on the weekend to pickup the engine, driveshaft and suspension. He had built a pretty nifty jig to hold the engine, so the two of us hoisted it up (long block n all) onto the back of his truck. His lady was extremely handy and got stuck in with her nice clean nails and WHITE shirt.

Good to meet another enthusiast just makin' it work. Hope you guys got home safely!

Finished up the hatch rust repair and put down some matte black paint over the primer to protect it until I can afford some ruby mica + clear coat. No more badges, no more hatch bar. Kinda ugly, but being rust free was more important than being red.

Nice! I like it!

I'm about to fix the badge-rust on my Fozzie as well. I'll do colormatched though.

Mine will be color matched ASAP, I'm not big on matte black. I had rust by the badges, the tail center section, the handle, the license plate, the bar, and a big spot at the bottom. It was terrible. Every time I looked at it, I could imagine Dead91silvia shedding a single tear for all the rust on our cars in the Midwest.

I'll never understand why Subaru thought the outback and AWD badges were fine with adhesive only, but the legacy badge needed adhesive AND posts/clips with holes drilled in the panel.

There's a little black plastic thing where I can put my fingers, next to the latch on the bottom of the hatch. I use that more often than the bar, because finger prints and smudges on the bar were annoying me.

Ah. You're talking about opening the hatch. I'm talking more about closing it. I have to really push my hatch down to make it close all the way. Brand new hydraulics will do that. They're great, though!
